From RAG to Agentic RAG for Faithful Islamic Question Answering

Gagan Bhatia, Hamdy Mubarak, Mustafa Jarrar et al.

LLMs are increasingly used for Islamic question answering, where ungrounded responses may carry serious religious consequences. Yet standard MCQ/MRC-style evaluations do not capture key real-world failure modes, notably free-form hallucinations and whether models appropriately abstain when evidence is lacking. To shed a light on this aspect we introduce ISLAMICFAITHQA, a 3,810-item bilingual (Arabic/English) generative benchmark with atomic single-gold answers, which enables direct measurement of hallucination and abstention. We additionally developed an end-to-end grounded Islamic modelling suite consisting of (i) 25K Arabic text-grounded SFT reasoning pairs, (ii) 5K bilingual preference samples for reward-guided alignment, and (iii) a verse-level Qur'an retrieval corpus of $\sim$6k atomic verses (ayat). Building on these resources, we develop an agentic Quran-grounding framework (agentic RAG) that uses structured tool calls for iterative evidence seeking and answer revision. Experiments across Arabic-centric and multilingual LLMs show that retrieval improves correctness and that agentic RAG yields the largest gains beyond standard RAG, achieving state-of-the-art performance and stronger Arabic-English robustness even with a small model (i.e., Qwen3 4B). We will make the experimental resources and datasets publicly available for the community.

Dietary diversity among Sundarbans forest-dependent communities: Prevalence, determinants, and livelihood implications.

Md Tanvir Hossain, Tunvir Ahamed Shohel, Md Nasif Ahsan et al.

The resources of the Sundarbans mangrove forest have provided livelihoods for communities in Bangladesh and India that depend on it. However, the role of the Sundarbans in ensuring the household dietary diversity of Sundarbans mangrove forest resource-dependent communities (SMFRDCs) remains unexplored. Considering the Sustainable Livelihood Approach, this cross-sectional survey study was conducted in three coastal districts (Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat) to assess the prevalence and determinants of dietary diversity among SMFRDCs. Data were collected using a structured interview schedule from 782 households selected through a multistage stratified random sampling process over three months in 2023. Relevant statistical tests were conducted to assess the prevalence of dietary diversity and identify its determinants among households in the immediate vicinity of the Sundarbans. The one-sample binomial test showed that honey collectors and households in Shyamnagar Upazila had higher dietary diversity than those involved in other occupations and residing in other areas. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis indicated that individuals with higher education and those involved in multiple seasonal occupations were more likely to have diversified diets; however, spatial location had an inverse effect on the diets of SMFRDCs. Household assets, including domestic, transport, and livestock assets, as well as livelihood capitals such as social, natural, financial, and political, were positively associated with a diversified diet. In contrast, human and physical capital were negatively associated with household dietary diversity. The findings further show that physical vulnerability, along with household food insecurity, negatively affected dietary diversity among forest-proximate households. To ensure a sustainable, proper, and protein-enriched diet for forest-resource dependent people in the Sundarbans mangrove forest, context-specific, tailored, and well-integrated strategies are needed, including promoting alternative livelihoods, such as climate-smart agriculture, along with awareness regarding the consumption of locally available nutritious foods and government-aided food assistance programs, specifically during seasonal unemployment. Moreover, to improve access to diversified food items essential for the physical and mental development and well-being of forest-adjacent marginalized communities in coastal Bangladesh, certain factors suggested by the Sustainable Livelihood Approach, such as vulnerability, assets, policies and structures, and livelihood strategies, should be considered to ensure the sustainability of livelihood and resources, especially for climate-vulnerable communities.

From RAG to Agentic: Validating Islamic-Medicine Responses with LLM Agents

Mohammad Amaan Sayeed, Mohammed Talha Alam, Raza Imam et al.

Centuries-old Islamic medical texts like Avicenna's Canon of Medicine and the Prophetic Tibb-e-Nabawi encode a wealth of preventive care, nutrition, and holistic therapies, yet remain inaccessible to many and underutilized in modern AI systems. Existing language-model benchmarks focus narrowly on factual recall or user preference, leaving a gap in validating culturally grounded medical guidance at scale. We propose a unified evaluation pipeline, Tibbe-AG, that aligns 30 carefully curated Prophetic-medicine questions with human-verified remedies and compares three LLMs (LLaMA-3, Mistral-7B, Qwen2-7B) under three configurations: direct generation, retrieval-augmented generation, and a scientific self-critique filter. Each answer is then assessed by a secondary LLM serving as an agentic judge, yielding a single 3C3H quality score. Retrieval improves factual accuracy by 13%, while the agentic prompt adds another 10% improvement through deeper mechanistic insight and safety considerations. Our results demonstrate that blending classical Islamic texts with retrieval and self-evaluation enables reliable, culturally sensitive medical question-answering.

Preventing AI Deepfake Abuse: An Islamic Ethics Framework

Wisnu Uriawan, Imany Fauzy Rahman, Muhamad Zidan et al.

The rapid development of deepfake technology powered by AI has raised global concerns regarding the manipulation of information, the usurpation of digital identities, and the erosion of public trust in the authenticity of online content. These challenges extend beyond technical issues and involve complex moral dimensions, rendering conventional, technologically driven, and reactive management approaches insufficient to address underlying causes such as intent, ethical responsibility, and intangible social harm. In response to these challenges, this study aims to formulate a comprehensive Islamic ethical framework as a preventive approach to mitigate the misuse of deepfake technology. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), selecting ten primary sources published between 2018 and 2025 to identify ethical gaps, regulatory needs, and appropriate normative solutions. The analysis demonstrates that integrating the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly hifz al-ird and hifz al-nafs, provides a strong normative foundation for governing the responsible use of digital technology. Based on the findings, this study proposes three strategic recommendations: regulatory reforms that recognize the intangible and psychological harms resulting from reputational damage; strengthened technology governance grounded in moral accountability and the values of adl, amanah, and transparency; and enhanced public digital literacy based on the principle of tabayyun. Overall, the findings suggest that the application of Islamic ethical principles shifts governance paradigms from punitive mechanisms toward preventive approaches that emphasize the protection of human dignity, the prevention of harm, and the promotion of the common good in the digital age.

A Comparative Analysis of Instagram and TikTok as Islamic da'wahh Media in the Digital Era

Wisnu Uriawan, Muhammad Saifurridwani Ijazi, Nizzami Ramdhan Arraudy et al.

This research aims to analyze and compare the effectiveness of Islamic da'wahh on two popular social me dia platforms, namely Instagram and TikTok. The analysis is conducted based on four main aspects: media characteristics, da'wahh communication strategies, audience engagement effec tiveness, and user behavioral responses. The research employs a a mixed-methods approach integrating qualitative content analysis and descriptive quantitative metrics through observations of the popular da'wahh account @hananattakistory during the period of October to November 2025. The findings indicate that TikTok excels in the effectiveness of disseminating da'wahh messages through high interaction rates, achieving an engagement rate of 1.42%. In contrast, Instagram records a higher total interac tion with an engagement rate of 5.47%, reflecting deeper and more reflective audience involvement. Qualitative analysis shows that TikTok is more effective in the initial stage of capturing audience attention (awareness), while Instagram is stronger in building loyalty and fostering a digital da'wahh community. Thus, combining the use of both platforms can serve as a complementary digital da'wahh strategy, expanding reach while deepening the understanding of Islamic values in the era of social media. The main contribution of this study lies in its comparative, empirically grounded approach that integrates both qualitative and quantitative analyses to map the effectiveness of da'wahh across platforms, providing a strategic foundation for developing adaptive and contextual digital da'wahh for young Muslim audiences.

Watch, Listen, Understand, Mislead: Tri-modal Adversarial Attacks on Short Videos for Content Appropriateness Evaluation

Sahid Hossain Mustakim, S M Jishanul Islam, Ummay Maria Muna et al.

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are increasingly used for content moderation, yet their robustness in short-form video contexts remains underexplored. Current safety evaluations often rely on unimodal attacks, failing to address combined attack vulnerabilities. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive framework for evaluating the tri-modal safety of MLLMs. First, we present the Short-Video Multimodal Adversarial (SVMA) dataset, comprising diverse short-form videos with human-guided synthetic adversarial attacks. Second, we propose ChimeraBreak, a novel tri-modal attack strategy that simultaneously challenges visual, auditory, and semantic reasoning pathways. Extensive experiments on state-of-the-art MLLMs reveal significant vulnerabilities with high Attack Success Rates (ASR). Our findings uncover distinct failure modes, showing model biases toward misclassifying benign or policy-violating content. We assess results using LLM-as-a-judge, demonstrating attack reasoning efficacy. Our dataset and findings provide crucial insights for developing more robust and safe MLLMs.

Oitijjo-3D: Generative AI Framework for Rapid 3D Heritage Reconstruction from Street View Imagery

Momen Khandoker Ope, Akif Islam, Mohd Ruhul Ameen et al.

Cultural heritage restoration in Bangladesh faces a dual challenge of limited resources and scarce technical expertise. Traditional 3D digitization methods, such as photogrammetry or LiDAR scanning, require expensive hardware, expert operators, and extensive on-site access, which are often infeasible in developing contexts. As a result, many of Bangladesh's architectural treasures, from the Paharpur Buddhist Monastery to Ahsan Manzil, remain vulnerable to decay and inaccessible in digital form. This paper introduces Oitijjo-3D, a cost-free generative AI framework that democratizes 3D cultural preservation. By using publicly available Google Street View imagery, Oitijjo-3D reconstructs faithful 3D models of heritage structures through a two-stage pipeline - multimodal visual reasoning with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image for structure-texture synthesis, and neural image-to-3D generation through Hexagen for geometry recovery. The system produces photorealistic, metrically coherent reconstructions in seconds, achieving significant speedups compared to conventional Structure-from-Motion pipelines, without requiring any specialized hardware or expert supervision. Experiments on landmarks such as Ahsan Manzil, Choto Sona Mosque, and Paharpur demonstrate that Oitijjo-3D preserves both visual and structural fidelity while drastically lowering economic and technical barriers. By turning open imagery into digital heritage, this work reframes preservation as a community-driven, AI-assisted act of cultural continuity for resource-limited nations.

Mohammed Er-Riyad Er-Riyad, Maroua El-Jihaoui, Ibrahim Bamohammed

Crowdfunding platforms are considered valuable tools within Islamic finance due to their potential compliance with Islamic Sharia principles and their absence of any suspicion related to usury (Riba). These platforms are new financing mechanisms based on raising funds from potential contributors to finance specific projects. This research aims to shed light on crowdfunding as a form of financing that can be classified within Islamic finance. The research also explores crowdfunding's role in financing disaster relief efforts and aiding disaster-stricken regions by providing financial solutions managed via digital platforms launched specifically for this purpose. As an example of crowdfunding to mitigate the aftermath of natural disasters, the research examines the "Tasharuky" platform. The platform primarily funds operations that mitigate the effects of certain natural disasters in accordance with Islamic Sharia rulings in regions across the Middle East, Indonesia and Africa.

The High Frequency of a G-Allele Variant of the <i>FOXP3</i> Gene in Old Asian Cattle Breeds, Water Buffaloes, and Holstein Friesian Cows: A Potential Link to Infertility

Abdullah Al Faruq, Oky Setyo Widodo, Mitsuhiro Takagi et al.

Reproductive failure in cattle production is a global concern and is influenced by various factors, including genetic alterations. This study explored the relationship between an X-linked single-nucleotide variant (NC_037357.1: g.87298881A>G, rs135720414) in the upstream of the bovine forkhead box P3 (<i>FOXP3</i>) gene and infertility. To this end, we examined the genotypes of the variant in old Asian cattle breeds, including 48 Bali and 5 Jaliteng cattle, and 20 water buffaloes, which have recently shown subclinical signs of infertility and repeated breeding problems among populations in Indonesia. We also examined the genotypes in 69 parous and 39 non-parous Holstein Friesian (HF) cows and investigated the relationship between the genotypes and serum concentration of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). The G allele frequency was markedly high in Bali (0.944) and Jaliteng cattle (0.714), and water buffaloes (1), suggesting that the G allele may be originally a wild-type variant in old Asian cattle and buffaloes. In HF cows, the G allele frequency was moderately high, and the AMH concentration was significantly lower (<i>p</i> < 0.05) in parous cows carrying the G allele (A/G and G/G genotypes) than in parous cows with the A/A genotype. In contrast, there were no significant differences in AMH concentrations among the three genotypes of non-parous HF cows. This suggests that both G allele and aging are associated with infertility in HF cows. In conclusion, the G allele of the <i>FOXP3</i> gene variant may potentially be associated with infertility in different bovine breeds and species. Therefore, special attention should be paid to this variant, and infertility in bovine herds may be improved by selection and/or introduction of the A allele.

Male Infertility and Its Correlates in Chuadanga District of Bangladesh

Sazin Islam, Md. Shariful Islam, Sharmin Akter et al.

Male infertility is an escalating global health concern, yet it remains under-researched in Bangladesh. The factors contributing to this issue have not been thoroughly studied. This study aims to identify the factors associated with male infertility in the Chuadanga district of the Khulna division of Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 690 male participants seeking infertility treatment at community clinics and hospitals within the district. Participants were recruited through a two-stage sampling technique and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The infertility status of the males served as the outcome variable, while sociodemographic characteristics, contextual factors, lifestyle behaviors, and health-related information were treated as explanatory variables. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression models. The study revealed that 16.5% of participants were classified as infertile, while a substantial majority (83.9%) was aware of their condition. Key factors significantly associated with male infertility included educational attainment (AOR = 0.239, p = .032), occupation (AOR = .317, p = .044), monthly income (AOR = 6.324, p = 0.032), monthly expenditure (AOR = 0.184, p = 0.031), type of residence (AOR = 0.139, p < 0.001), sources of drinking water (AOR = 11.615, p < 0.001), and smoking habits (AOR = 3.304, p < 0.001) in the study area. This study underscores critical factors contributing to male infertility in Chuadanga, emphasizing the need for targeted public health interventions. Strategies should emphasize promoting healthy lifestyles, ensuring environmental safety, and improving access to clean drinking water. Raising awareness and enhancing education on male reproductive health can help improve outcomes and reduce infertility rates in low-resource settings.

Houston, al-Rāzī Has a Problem: Are Humans (Really) the Best of Creation?

Shoaib Ahmed Malik

This article explores Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s (d. 1210) theological insights on the metaphysical hierarchy of creation to address the question: Can there be extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) superior to human intelligence? By revisiting a long-standing debate in the Islamic tradition concerning the superiority (afḍaliyyah) of angels versus humans, this article positions al-Rāzī as a pivotal case who diverges from the majority Ashʿarī stance by advocating for angelic superiority. Through a detailed analysis of al-Rāzī’s deconstruction of pro-human superiority arguments and his construction of arguments favoring angels, the article demonstrates how his framework challenges anthropocentric assumptions and broadens theological possibilities. If al-Rāzī’s arguments are deemed successful, his scripturally and rationally grounded framework provides a foundation for envisioning ETI that may surpass humanity in spiritual or intellectual rank. This article contributes uniquely by unveiling al-Rāzī’s underexplored ideas on angelic superiority and integrating them into the context of Islam and ETI, thereby advancing modern discourse on Islamic theological anthropology.

An Experiment on Feature Selection using Logistic Regression

Raisa Islam, Subhasish Mazumdar, Rakibul Islam

In supervised machine learning, feature selection plays a very important role by potentially enhancing explainability and performance as measured by computing time and accuracy-related metrics. In this paper, we investigate a method for feature selection based on the well-known L1 and L2 regularization strategies associated with logistic regression (LR). It is well known that the learned coefficients, which serve as weights, can be used to rank the features. Our approach is to synthesize the findings of L1 and L2 regularization. For our experiment, we chose the CIC-IDS2018 dataset owing partly to its size and also to the existence of two problematic classes that are hard to separate. We report first with the exclusion of one of them and then with its inclusion. We ranked features first with L1 and then with L2, and then compared logistic regression with L1 (LR+L1) against that with L2 (LR+L2) by varying the sizes of the feature sets for each of the two rankings. We found no significant difference in accuracy between the two methods once the feature set is selected. We chose a synthesis, i.e., only those features that were present in both the sets obtained from L1 and that from L2, and experimented with it on more complex models like Decision Tree and Random Forest and observed that the accuracy was very close in spite of the small size of the feature set. Additionally, we also report on the standard metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score.

Mobilising a Decolonial–Islamic Praxis: Covenants in Islam and Muslim–Indigenous Relations

Halim Rane, Debbie Bargallie, Troy Meston

Islam was an important factor in the decolonisation of Muslim countries from European colonial rule during the 19th and 20th centuries. However, Muslims are among the migrant-settler populations of Australia, Canada, the United States, and other British colonial states that continue to dispossess and disenfranchise Indigenous populations. This article contributes to the debate on “decolonising Islam”. It contends that covenants with God and between people in Islam’s pre-eminent sources, the Qur’an and <i>sunnah</i>, are antithetical to colonialism and reinforce a praxis-orientated decolonial–Islamic agenda. This article focuses on three aspects of decolonisation, addressing: (1) supremacist ideology; (2) human existence and coexistence; and (3) claims of entitlement. Using Australia as the primary case study, it examines Islamic obligations towards Indigenous peoples in settler-colonial states, emphasising the potential of covenants to promote mutual recognition and dialogue towards redressing injustices and building respectful coexistence.

The role of belief systems and misperceptions in halal tourism policy: evidences from Indonesia

Citra Hennida, Demas Nauvarian, Nabila Olivia Saptari et al.

Policy business management and public policy have dominated the discussion on changes and continuity in halal tourism policy formulation. However, similar results across differing cases suggest the need for a novel explanation that accounts for a socio-cultural explanation. This research aims to explore the role of belief systems and misperceptions to explain the success and failure of halal tourism policy sustainability. The case of Indonesia is the perfect laboratory for this research as the country hosts diverse strands of Islam, which are not limited to religious practice. This research utilizes qualitative comparative methodology by sampling two of Indonesia’s top halal tourism destinations, Lombok and Yogyakarta, which are chosen through maximum variation sampling based on their diversity of Islamic belief systems. Furthermore, this research found that while the two areas similarly have a segmented religious community, the institutionalized strands differ. In Yogyakarta, the moderate ruling elite has become the monarchy leading the region’s governance, while in Lombok, purist religious leaders hold political power. The differing belief systems have resulted in a polarised misperception of halal tourism that has hindered its policy implementation in different ways.
