Confidentiality-Preserving Verifiable Business Processes through Zero-Knowledge Proofs

Jannis Kiesel, Jonathan Heiss

Ensuring the integrity of business processes without disclosing confidential business information is a major challenge in inter-organizational processes. This paper introduces a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP)-based approach for the verifiable execution of business processes while preserving confidentiality. We integrate ZK virtual machines (zkVMs) into business process management engines through a comprehensive system architecture and a prototypical implementation. Our approach supports chained verifiable computations through proof compositions. On the example of product carbon footprinting, we model sequential footprinting activities and demonstrate how organizations can prove and verify the integrity of verifiable processes without exposing sensitive information. We assess different ZKP proving variants within process models for their efficiency in proving and verifying, and discuss the practical integration of ZKPs throughout the Business Process Management (BPM) lifecycle. Our experiment-driven evaluation demonstrates the automation of process verification under given confidentiality constraints.

Toward Data Systems That Are Business Semantic Centric and AI Agents Assisted

Cecil Pang

Contemporary businesses operate in dynamic environments requiring rapid adaptation to achieve goals and maintain competitiveness. Existing data platforms often fall short by emphasizing tools over alignment with business needs, resulting in inefficiencies and delays. To address this gap, I propose the Business Semantics Centric, AI Agents Assisted Data System (BSDS), a holistic system that integrates architecture, workflows, and team organization to ensure data systems are tailored to business priorities rather than dictated by technical constraints. BSDS redefines data systems as dynamic enablers of business success, transforming them from passive tools into active drivers of organizational growth. BSDS has a modular architecture that comprises curated data linked to business entities, a knowledge base for context-aware AI agents, and efficient data pipelines. AI agents play a pivotal role in assisting with data access and system management, reducing human effort, and improving scalability. Complementing this architecture, BSDS incorporates workflows optimized for both exploratory data analysis and production requirements, balancing speed of delivery with quality assurance. A key innovation of BSDS is its incorporation of the human factor. By aligning data team expertise with business semantics, BSDS bridges the gap between technical capabilities and business needs. Validated through real-world implementation, BSDS accelerates time-to-market for data-driven initiatives, enhances cross-functional collaboration, and provides a scalable blueprint for businesses of all sizes. Future research can build on BSDS to explore optimization strategies using complex systems and adaptive network theories, as well as developing autonomous data systems leveraging AI agents.

Cabaran Komunikasi Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN) dalam Menyelaras Pandemik COVID-19: Analisis Tripartite Model of National Security (3Ps / Model 3P)

Siti Sabrina Imji Rahim, Mohd Ikbal Mohd Huda, Ravichandran Moorthy

National security threats have now grown to include health issues as a new security agenda with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has become a major crisis for the country when many lives have been lost, and the country's economy has been affected. As the threat has become a national crisis, the National Security Council (NSC) are responsible for managing it as the main national security coordinator and other agencies. Many strategies are implemented by NSC, including the Movement Control Order (MCO), quarantine for those with symptoms, use of disease control equipment, symptom detection through MySejahtera, vaccination, closure of non-essential business operations, country entry and social events restrictions, the establishment of call centres and assistance to the people. However, there are challenges involving NSC communication problems with ministries/agencies and people. Therefore, it is important to analyse what forms of communication challenges and their effects on the country and people enable NSC to improve. This article uses qualitative and analytical methods via primary and secondary documents, such as official reports, academic journals and online news, to elucidate the Tripartite Model of National Security (3Ps / Model 3P) used as a research analysis. The study found that communication challenges have caused people concern, increased cases of COVID-19 infection, confusion and ignorance of the government functions and roles, lack of government capacity to provide personal protective equipment (PPE), wrong actions/movements by the people and the spread fake news, but MKN managed to address it through the involvement of all parties. Keywords: COVID-19 Pandemic, National Security Council (NSC), communication challenges, Ministries/Agencies, people, Tripartite Model of National Security (3Ps / 3P Model).

The "Digital Lifeline" Paradox among youth:  A study on Social Media platforms during COVID-19 in North-East India4

Prof. Durgesh Tripathi, Dr. Priyanka Sachdeva

From shopping to electronic communication, education, and business tools, social media is an  essential part of daily life. Social media significantly impacts people's lives. Users may easily  connect through blogs and other media channels. Journalists and their organizations have had to  tread carefully ever since social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter became vital  tools for reporting. People now use these websites regularly. Youth's mental health suffered as a  result of the COVID-19 physical separation tactics. By using digital technology more frequently,  young people worldwide have mitigated the negative impacts of social isolation. Numerous  businesses, including manufacturing, services, and education, have been impacted by the 2020  COVID-19 pandemic. Even though there is a likely approach to continue academic activities  through online learning, both the procedure and the outcome could not be effective.  The paper aims to critically analyze these trends of social media usage amongst the youth in North East  India and to understand the influence of time spent on social networking sites on the mental  health of youth in the selected states of North-East India. For this purpose, a systematic  questionnaire was used to survey students from several northeastern Indian states. According to the study's findings, social media addiction among young people in northeastern states rose at the  time of COVID-19, which is causing mental stress and sleep deprivation.

Communicating green in Mekong Delta agritourism: greenwashing or green fantasy?

Mi Hoang, Tan Le Minh, M. T. Hoang et al.

The Mekong Delta’s agritourism potential is growing through government initiatives and unique attractions, but rapid development raises sustainability concerns amid gaps between promotional narratives and actual tourist experiences. This study examines how “green” efforts are framed across government, business, and media channels, identifying disparities to improve sustainability communication and practices. This study collects agritourism communication data from four sources, including government websites, business promotions, media, and tourist reviews. A hybrid coding approach analyzed the data using 14 pre-defined themes. Data is qualitative and quantitative analysis with CDA, RTA and CL. Media coverage romanticizes agritourism, lacks critical voices and technological innovation, while government websites emphasize green policies and digital transformation but risk greenwashing with vague climate plans. Tourism companies promote “green” imagery but show clear greenwashing signs such as lack of certifications, low eco-infrastructure, whereas international tourists report mixed experiences, and domestic tourists note gaps between promoted ideals and actual infrastructure. Furthermore, a policy communication gap exists while government campaigns promote certifications like OCOP, but businesses ignore these in marketing, revealing a disconnect between public-sector sustainability efforts and private-sector implementation. There is the disconnect between policy promotion and private-sector implementation in the Mekong Delta’s agritourism, risking duplicated efforts and greenwashing. Future research should expand stakeholder interviews, include local media, and compare ASEAN agritourism markets to assess if similar sustainability communication gaps persist regionally.

Subjective well-being of public relations and communication professionals in the context of perceived organisational support

Anca Anton

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine and analyse subjective well-being among public relations (PR) and communication professionals by looking at several factors: employer and employee engagement, work culture and relationships, work–life balance and conflict, job satisfaction, well-being and networking and perceived gender discrimination and sexual harassment. Additionally, we examine and discuss them in the context of perceived organisational support (POS) and management-mediated well-being.Design/methodology/approachThis paper examines several dimensions of well-being in the PR/comms industry in Romania: employer and employee engagement, work culture and relationships, work–life balance and conflict, job satisfaction, well-being and networking and perceived gender discrimination and sexual harassment. 117 adult respondents (male and female, full-time employed and freelancers, professionals from PR, advertising and corporate communications) filled-in a questionnaire developed within the EUPRERA Women in PR Network, which brings together communication and human resource (HR) perspectives.FindingsThe study revealed a gap between perceived and practical organisational support related to well-being. While emotional support is acknowledged, actionable support is less present. Gender-specific challenges, such as networking stress and sexual harassment, were more prevalent among women. Age and experience influenced job satisfaction, with mature professionals reporting higher satisfaction but more work encroachment into personal time. The characteristics of the industry, including its feminisation at both executive and managerial levels and the predominance of small businesses as market actors, underscore the need for tailored well-being strategies based on gender and age conditioned by organisational capabilities and resources.Practical implicationsThe results can be used by PR and communication managers in Romania to better understand the perception of their employees regarding well-being and to develop organisational support systems.Originality/valueThis is the first study addressing well-being and POS in the PR and communication industries in Romania.

Unlocking Sustainability Compliance: Characterizing the EU Taxonomy for Business Process Management

Finn Klessascheck, Stephan A. Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Jan Mendling et al.

To promote sustainable business practices, and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the EU has developed the taxonomy of sustainable activities, which describes when exactly business practices can be considered sustainable. While the taxonomy has only been recently established, progressively more companies will have to report how much of their revenue was created via sustainably executed business processes. To help companies prepare to assess whether their business processes comply with the constraints outlined in the taxonomy, we investigate in how far these criteria can be used for conformance checking, that is, assessing in a data-driven manner, whether business process executions adhere to regulatory constraints. For this, we develop a few-shot learning pipeline to characterize the constraints of the taxonomy with the help of an LLM as to the process dimensions they relate to. We find that many constraints of the taxonomy are useable for conformance checking, particularly in the sectors of energy, manufacturing, and transport. This will aid companies in preparing to monitor regulatory compliance with the taxonomy automatically, by characterizing what kind of information they need to extract, and by providing a better understanding of sectors where such an assessment is feasible and where it is not.

A Reality check of the benefits of LLM in business

Ming Cheung

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable performance in language understanding and generation tasks by leveraging vast amounts of online texts. Unlike conventional models, LLMs can adapt to new domains through prompt engineering without the need for retraining, making them suitable for various business functions, such as strategic planning, project implementation, and data-driven decision-making. However, their limitations in terms of bias, contextual understanding, and sensitivity to prompts raise concerns about their readiness for real-world applications. This paper thoroughly examines the usefulness and readiness of LLMs for business processes. The limitations and capacities of LLMs are evaluated through experiments conducted on four accessible LLMs using real-world data. The findings have significant implications for organizations seeking to leverage generative AI and provide valuable insights into future research directions. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first quantified study of LLMs applied to core business operations and challenges.

A Systematic Review of Business Process Improvement: Achievements and Potentials in Combining Concepts from Operations Research and Business Process Management

Michel Kunkler, Felix Schumann, Stefanie Rinderle-Ma

Business Process Management and Operations Research are two research fields that both aim to enhance value creation in organizations. While Business Process Management has historically emphasized on providing precise models, Operations Research has focused on constructing tractable models and their solutions. This systematic literature review identifies and analyzes work that uses combined concepts from both disciplines. In particular, it analyzes how business process models have been conceptualized as mathematical models and which optimization techniques have been applied to these models. Results indicate a strong focus on resource allocation and scheduling problems. Current approaches often lack support of the stochastic nature of many problems, and do only sparsely use information from process models or from event logs, such as resource-related information or information from the data perspective.

Discovery and Simulation of Data-Aware Business Processes

Orlenys López-Pintado, Serhii Murashko, Marlon Dumas

Simulation is a common approach to predict the effect of business process changes on quantitative performance. The starting point of Business Process Simulation (BPS) is a process model enriched with simulation parameters. To cope with the typically large parameter spaces of BPS models, several methods have been proposed to automatically discover BPS models from event logs. Virtually all these approaches neglect the data perspective of business processes. Yet, the data attributes manipulated by a business process often determine which activities are performed, how many times, and when. This paper addresses this gap by introducing a data-aware BPS modeling approach and a method to discover data-aware BPS models from event logs. The BPS modeling approach supports three types of data attributes (global, case-level, and event-level) as well as deterministic and stochastic attribute update rules and data-aware branching conditions. An empirical evaluation shows that the proposed method accurately discovers the type of each data attribute and its associated update rules, and that the resulting BPS models more closely replicate the process execution control flow relative to data-unaware BPS models.

Going green to keep talent: Exploring the relationship between sustainable business practices and turnover intentio

Anna Florek‐Paszkowska, C. A. Hoyos-Vallejo

PURPOSE: This study explores the association between sustainable business practices (SBP) and turnover intention (TI) to understand the role of sustainability initiatives in influencing employee retention and organizational commitment. METHODOLOGY: The present study conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. From an initial selection of 326 articles, a rigorous double-blind screening process identified 31 key papers for in-depth analysis. FINDINGS: The systematic review provides compelling evidence that SBP have a robust positive association with employee outcomes, especially in reducing TI. This relationship is notably mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment and moderated by psychological safety and ethical leadership elements. Further, key gaps were discerned, including the necessity to explore the varied impact of SBP across industries, the enduring effects of SBP on TI, the influence of cultural and contextual facets, and the urgency for methodological advancements in cross-cultural research. In response to these gaps, four hypotheses were conceptualized to provide deeper insights into the complex interplay between SBP, TI, and overarching cultural/contextual variables. IMPLICATIONS: Theoretically, this research adds to the existing literature by empirically validating the relationship between SBP and TI, highlighting critical mediators and moderators, and suggesting avenues for future research. Incorporating the identified gaps and proposed hypotheses provides a structured direction for subsequent investigations. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating SBP into organizational strategies to promote sustainability while enhancing workforce well-being and retention. Organizations can align with sustainability goals and boost employee satisfaction by focusing on organizational commitment, open communication, and leadership grounded in ethical and sustainable principles. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: This research provides a comprehensive overview of the interplay between SBP and TI, integrating insights from various studies. By emphasizing understudied mediators and moderators, identifying research gaps, and outlining derived hypotheses, the study sets the stage for future inquiries. Its practical recommendations are essential for organizations that balance sustainability goals with workforce stability, benefiting organizational performance and employee satisfaction.

The Importance of Instructor Affirming Messages in Business Communication Students’ Writing Apprehension

Michelle T Violanti, Stephanie Kelly, Emily Denton et al.

Through the guidance of social presence theory, this study sought to understand how instructors’ affirming messages and social presence behaviors affect students’ writing apprehension in online business communication courses. The data were consistent with two models, both of which indicate that instructor affirming messages indirectly affect students’ writing apprehension in the business communication classroom. Both models also indicate that students’ burnout mediates that indirect effect. The results show how important it is for instructors to take the time to leave affirming message feedback when teaching business communication online.

Organised Firestorm as strategy for business cyber-attacks

Andrea Russo

Having a good reputation is paramount for most organisations and companies. In fact, having an optimal corporate image allows them to have better transaction relationships with various customers and partners. However, such reputation is hard to build and easy to destroy for all kind of business commercial activities (B2C, B2B, B2B2C, B2G). A misunderstanding during the communication process to the customers, or just a bad communication strategy, can lead to a disaster for the entire company. This is emphasised by the reaction of millions of people on social networks, which can be very detrimental for the corporate image if they react negatively to a certain event. This is called a firestorm. In this paper, I propose a well-organised strategy for firestorm attacks on organisations, also showing how an adversary can leverage them to obtain private information on the attacked firm. Standard business security procedures are not designed to operate against multi-domain attacks; therefore, I will show how it is possible to bypass the classic and advised security procedures by operating different kinds of attack. I also propose a different firestorm attack, targeting a specific business company network in an efficient way. Finally, I present defensive procedures to reduce the negative effect of firestorms on a company.

An Ontology-based Collaborative Business Intelligence Framework

Muhammad Fahad, Jérôme Darmont

Business Intelligence constitutes a set of methodologies and tools aiming at querying, reporting, on-line analytic processing (OLAP), generating alerts, performing business analytics, etc. When in need to perform these tasks collectively by different collaborators, we need a Collaborative Business Intelligence (CBI) platform. CBI plays a significant role in targeting a common goal among various companies, but it requires them to connect, organize and coordinate with each other to share opportunities, respecting their own autonomy and heterogeneity. This paper presents a CBI platform that hat democratizes data by allowing BI users to easily connect, share and visualize data among collaborators, obtain actionable answers by collaborative analysis, investigate and make collaborative decisions, and also store the analyses along graphical diagrams and charts in a collaborative ontology knowledge base. Our CBI framework supports and assists information sharing, collaborative decision-making and annotation management beyond the boundaries of individuals and enterprises.
