This article takes Ásmundur Sveinsson’s statue "The First White Mother in America" as a starting point. With reference to this work, its several later casts, and three illustrative examples from recent popular history writing, the article demonstrates how popular representations of the statue's subject, Guðríðr Þorbjarnardóttir, frequently reinforce traditions rooted in racially exclusive historical standards and Indigenous erasure. While Guðríðr’s story offers a valuable counterpoint to male-dominated and often hyper-violent images of “Viking” history, writers and other popular history purveyors depicting her story also run the risk of simultaneously reinforcing settler-colonial and white supremacist ideals regardless of their individual motives.

The novels of the Norwegian Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun can be seen as an ongoing discussion with modernity. In some parts his critique is reactionary, in other parts worth listening to. This article deals with his Segelfoss novels, Hamsun’s satirical representation of the commodity trade within the emerging capitalist market and the role of the consumer. The novels may be read as early and thought-provoking contributions to the large amount of literature on consumers and their nature. Is growth always good? What has been lost? Was ist verloren gegangen?

This paper aims to outline a dissertation project, which was presented at the conference Aktuelle landeskundliche Ansätze in DaF/DaZ (Actual cultural studies on didactic in German as a foreign language and second language). Furthermore, I want to conceptualize two terms, that focus to this perspective – migrationssensibel (migrational sensitive) and heimatkritisch (home critic). The paper starts with a short historical overview and a debate on the role of the concepts of Landeskunde and Erinnerungsorte (Spaces of memory). It also presents the methodological design that will be used for this dissertation project (Grounded Theory, and City Walks). Finally, I will describe the expected outcome of this dissertation project.

The paper presents a practical case of translation of a Dutch book into Russian. The project took place at the Lomonosov State university of Moscow. Russian students who choose Dutch as a second language at the Faculty of Philology participated the translation seminars with the aim to translate the book by Jan Renkema "Het DNA van Nederland" into Russian. A new approach was used in the course: instead of individual passages, one text was chosen, and a modern translation program was used. During the translation, students faced a number of difficulties, both at the text level, and when choosing specific words and expressions for the most accurate transfer of meaning. These challenges are listed in the paper.

ABSTRACT: This article addresses the Norwegian response to global climate change and increased human migration through an analysis of the figure of the “climate refugee” in Inger Elisabeth Hansen’s 2015 poetry collection, Å resirkulere lengselen, avrenning foregår. In addition to situating the work in the context of the so-called “refugee crisis,” the author also discusses the origins of the term “climate refugee” and the conceptual and ethical problems surrounding such a designation. The article examines notions of aesthetics and poetics in the text, arguing that Hansen draws attention to the ubiquity of risk in the history of cultural exchange between humans. Rather than a poetics that attempts to manage mobile bodies or eliminate risk, the author argues that Hansen advocates for a poetics of relation that takes its inspiration from dynamic forms in nature.

For farms in theseareas, salt production was part of a diversified economy where a numberof resources could be utilised, such as animal husbandry, agricultureor fishing. Salt was produced by heating seawater in large shallowiron pans. This required substantial amounts of firewood, thus makingthe inner fjord areas especially suited for salt production.<p id="G373088446">Another likely contributing factor for the surplus productionof salt in the inner fjord areas was proximity to mountainous andvalley regions, where salt had to be imported. Place names and writtensources indicate that salt was an important commodity between innerfjords and the inlands of South Norway.

Numerous fields of linguistic research are now inconceivable without data analyzes in corpora. This also means that the creation of corpora is not meant to be an end in itself, but that it primarily has a serving function. The paper aims to discuss the potential of text-based corpus linguistic analyzes by means of authentic examples of argumentative connectives as well as to show the connection with translatological questions.

The article presents a newly defined system of the grammatical categories aspect, aktionsart and verb type (character). The aim is to explain the existence of semantically marked perfective verbs in Czech which express the last phase of the process expressed by the imperfective verb and/or its effective/resultative character – the successful completion (e.g. dočkat se and čekat). There are similarities in German and other languages (e.g. suchen and finden, search and find). The paper describes not only the position of these verbs in the aspectological system, but the relations between the two given verbs (the effective and the imperfective) as well.

The paper deals with an interpretation of the masculinity in the novel Verführungen, written by Marlene Streeruwitz (∗1950), an Austrian author with a strong feminist position. The hegemonic masculinity represents the most dominant form of masculinity in the society, and was understood in the western countries especially as the traditional, patriarchal masculinity. This sociological concept provides the starting point of the literary analysis.

The Hebrew chronicle written by Solomon b. Samson recounts the mass conversion of the Jews of Regensburg in 1096.’ The Jews were herded and forced into the local river where a ‘sign was made over the water, the sign of a cross’ and thus they were baptized, all together in the same river. The local German rivers play another role in the accounts of the turbulent events of the Crusade persecutions. They were also the place where Jews evaded conversion, drowning themselves in water, rather than being baptized by what the chronicles’ authors call the ‘stinking waters’ of Christianity. Reading these Hebrew chronicles, one is immediately struck by the tremendous revulsion expressed toward the waters of baptism. Indeed, in his analysis of the symbolic significance of the baptismal waters for medieval Jews, Ivan Marcus has suggested that baptism by force in the local rivers was so traumatic that they instituted a ritual response during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. One component of the medieval Jewish child initiation ceremony to Torah study was performed on the banks of the river, expressing Jewish aversion to baptism (see Fig. i).
