Fragmented Form and Spatiotemporal Experiences in Transnational Korean Women’s Poetry

Melanie Hyo-In Han

This paper explores the intersection of poetic form and transnational identity in contemporary women’s poetry, focusing on the strategic use of fragmentation and prose poetry. By examining the works of poets Don Mee Choi, Emily Jungmin Yoon, and Cathy Park Hong, it highlights how these forms enhance the exploration of spatiotemporal experiences and cultural belonging. I show how the interplay between fragmented poetry and prose poetry creates a dynamic aesthetic, reflecting the layered complexity of lived experiences, trauma, and resilience. Through a detailed analysis, this paper demonstrates how the use of prose poetry provides a versatile platform for delving into narratives of confinement and oppression, while fragmented forms capture the fluidity and dislocation inherent in transnational identities. I highlight how the integration of personal and socio-political narratives underscores the interconnectedness of global experiences, offering new perspectives on identity and belonging in a constantly shifting world.

Primo Levi and the Terrestrial Condition

Emiliano Guaraldo

In his stories, Primo Levi presents contrasting planetary visions of Earth: one depicting it as an expanding technosphere made of entangled beings, and the other as a world of disparities impacted by the agency of a mutated humanity. But Levi's ideas of planet do not solely advocate for a utopian cosmopolitanism of all living beings; he critically probes the tension between technology's promises in industrialized societies and the worldview that sees Earth merely as an exploitable resource. Moreover, his stories emphasize the divisions and the contradictions created by the planetarization of the logic of industrial modernity. This essay analyzes selected short stories from Vizio di forma, seeking to unpack Levi's intricate engagements with planetary concepts and the emergent idea of a terrestrial condition. Central to this exploration is how Levi's planetary vision reflects the inherent tensions between the individual and the collective, and between different scales and ways of existing.

Alcune osservazioni sui saggi "Russia" (1910) e "Santa Russia" (1918) di Andrej Belyj

Claudia Criveller

ONLINE PUBLIC SPEAKING: OBSTACLES AND BENEFITS OF THIS EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM FACULTY

Natavan Mammadova, Nigyar Masumova

The educational process underwent considerable changes in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes, lectures, conferences and other scientific events have changed their format as such activities became available only online, which gave rise to new obstacles. At the same time, it provided students with new opportunities. The authors of the article focus on public speaking on the example of journalism students and on the hardships and challenges learners have faced during online speeches which were made in front of the audience in large conference rooms beforehand. A public speech is part and parcel of both the educational process and a mass media specialist. Therefore, many students inevitably need the skills of oratory and public speaking. The study reveals such challenges as psychological and technological issues, keynote preparation and audience interaction as well. However, the research also illustrates the benefits of such an experience: an opportunity to feel more relaxed in familiar surroundings, speak without tension and stress, don't be interrupted by noises and sounds around, etc. Keywords: public speaking, online presentation, covid-19 pandemic, journalism faculty students

Reforming Church and Nation

L. Golemon

This chapter explores Protestant theological schools that educated pastors as reformers of church and the nation after religious disestablishment. This education built upon the liberal arts of the colleges, which taught the basic textual interpretation, rhetoric, and oratory. Rev. Timothy Dwight led the way in fashioning a new liberal arts in the college, which served as the foundation for advanced theological education. At Yale, he integrated the belles-lettres of European literature and rhetoric into the predominant American framework of Scottish Common Sense Realism. He also coupled these pedagogies with the voluntarist theology of Jonathan Edwards and the New Divinity, which bolstered Christian volunteerism and mission. With Dwight’s help, New England Congregationalists developed a graduate theological at Andover with a faculty in Scripture, theology, and homiletics (practical theology) who taught in the interdisciplinary, rhetorical framework of the liberal arts. Dr. Ebenezer Porter raised a generation of princes of the pulpit and college professors of rhetoric and oratory, and he wrote the first widely used manuals in elocution. Moses Stuart in Bible advanced German critical studies of Scripture for future pastoral work and for scholars in the field. The greatest alternative to Andover was the historic Calvinism of Princeton Theological Seminary, as interpreted through the empiricism of Scottish Common Sense. President Archibald Alexander, historian Samuel Miller, theologian Charles Hodge, and later homiletics professor James Wadell Alexander emphasized the text-critical and narrative interpretation of Scripture, and the emphasis on classic rhetoric and oratory in homiletics culminated the curriculum.

Tragic Rites: Narrative and Ritual in Sophoclean Drama by Adriana Brook (review)

Angeliki Tzanetou

be the only man to be harmed by those resources,” etc. At 140 T 2 sanctitas is rendered as “scrupulousness,” but perhaps that should be saved for diligentia; rather, “integrity, probity” (OLD s.v. 3b). 140 F 6 eiusdem generis “of the same gender,” not “according to the same principle.” 141 F 12A.4 (similarly 157 F 5): delete “had strong feelings aroused” and add “were” before “rebuked.” 143 + 144 F 2: ut infamiam . . . tolleret “in order to put an end to the ill-repute,” not “so that he removed the defamation.” Cn. Plancius was charged de sodaliciis, which is oddly rendered “conspiracy” at 167 F 1, though she more accurately renders it “illegal associations” in F 2. 170 T 2, an admittedly corrupt text, is oddly handled: voluptatibus is rendered as “wishes” (as if it were voluntatibus) and instead cupiditates is rendered as “pleasures,” rather than “desires.” 175 F 7: infirmus here is surely “sick,” not “deficient in resources.” Finally, I notice that there are some omissions, including two fragments of Hortensius that are among the addenda to Malcovati’s fourth edition (538). In addition, Pompey spoke at a contio in favor of Cicero’s restoration in 57 (Red. sen. 29). Two other orators would have merited inclusion: P. Servilius Vatia Isauricus (ibid. 25) and P. Lentulus Spinther (ibid. 26 and Brut. 268). In spite of some disagreements, these volumes mark an advance over Malcovati and should give powerful impetus to the study of Roman Republican oratory.

Io e altri nella poesia di Raboni

Andrea Maletto

The Use of Devotional Objects in Catalan Homes during the Late Middle Ages

M. Crispí

The purpose of this article is to study domestic devotion in Catalonia in the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, based on the information provided by numerous post-mortem inventories and texts written by coetaneous spiritual authors such as Ramon Llull, Francesc Eiximenis and Saint Vincent Ferrer. Among the objects recorded in the inventories, pieces of furniture and devotional objects laypeople and clergymen used in their pious practices as “material” aid for personal prayer stood out. They were in keeping with the strong visual culture that pervaded the Late Middle Ages. There were retables, oratories and images of religious themes. However, the inventories also listed lesser known but equally recurring objects such as paternosters and Agni Dei. Painted cloths depicting religious scenes that decorated the homes of numerous wealthy Catalan-Aragonese families at that time were also present. Spiritual books such as books of hours and psalters, biblical texts, Legenda Aurea, etc., were mentioned as well. They were part of the incipient libraries of the laity in the Late Middle Ages.

Poetic tradition and the voice of the translator: The first verse translations of Dante’s Commedia

Marta Marfany

This paper analyses and compares the variety of text types in the first verse translations of Dante’s Commedia: the Catalan translation by Andreu Febrer (1429), the Spanish translation by Pedro Fernández de Villegas (printed in 1515), and an anonymous French translation preserved in a manuscript dating from between 1491 and 1530. All these translations are the first verse translations of the work into their respective languages.
