The Viking-Age was a patriarchal time when men dominated the social and political world. However, due to the shamanistic practice of seiðr, women of this time had access to unique roles as spiritual leaders. This essay discusses the impact seiðr had on Viking-Age women’s agency and self-empowerment. Seiðr has close ties to textile arts, with seiðr rituals taking influence from repetitive spinning and weaving circles. The relationship between seiðr and textile art is seen throughout Norse mythology, and women who practice seiðr (called völur) are agential characters throughout many Icelandic sagas, most notably Thorbjörg from Eirik the Red’s Saga and Gunnhildr in Njal’s Saga. The rise of Christianity in Scandinavia and its subsequent anti-witchcraft laws soon led to the dissipation of seiðr.

Denne artikkelen handler om barn som ble smittet med tuberkulose og innlagt på sanatorium i Oslo på 1940-, 1950- og 1960-tallet. Den bygger på 11 intervjuer der kvinner og menn fra ulike deler av landet forteller om det å få tuberkulose som barn og om å bli innlagt på sanatorium, enten Grefsen Barnesanatorium (8) eller Åkeberg Barnehjem (3). Barna var fra omkring 17 måneder og opp til 10 år ved innleggelse, og for barna varte oppholdet på sanatorium fra ett til tre år. I artikkelen blir det spurt om hvordan tidligere pasienter minnes og forteller om det å bli smittet med tuberkulose som barn og innlagt og behandlet på sanatorium i Oslo, ofte langt fra familie og hjemsted. Minner og fortellinger blir her sett på i et barndomshistorisk og diskursivt perspektiv. Det vil si at minner og fortellinger blir fortolket med utgangspunkt i de historiske, sosiale og kulturelle mønstre, eller diskurser, som legger rammene for hvordan barndom ble oppfattet og snakket om i Norge på den tiden barna var innlagt på sanatorium, og på fortelletidspunktet på 2000-tallet. Tidsavhengige barndomsdiskurser og medisinske diskurser om legenes autoritet og om bekjempelse av sykdom og smitte konstituerer de historiske og kulturelle kontekster der minner og fortellinger om sanatorieliv fortolkes og formes.

The study presents the results of research aimed at various forms of negation used in the German version of the Law Book of Meissen written 1357–1387 in the central part of the German language area. This law book served as an important municipal legal document not only in various German towns, but also in many towns founded by German colonists in the Czech Lands. For the purpose of this study, negation was analysed in the edited manuscript of the Law Book of Meissen written in German (the so called manuscript B) and in three other German manuscripts of this legal document (O1 , O2 and V). All three manuscripts were used in Olomouc. The research results were confronted with all forms of negation in 19 (Old) Czech translations of the Law Book of Meissen from the years 1400–1516.

ABSTRACT: The following review-article deals with three publications that have been released in recent years, all of which can be read in the context of memory studies through the mention of memory in their titles. It is evident that memory studies has become a field of research that ranges from the humanities to the social sciences to the natural sciences, with the only common denominator being the object of study of memory. But what memory is, how memory is constituted, or how it can be analyzed or even made measurable is where the publications discussed differ strikingly. The aim of this review is therefore not to place the three publications in a singular context but rather, by discussing their differences, to show how diverse memory studies is as a field and to present what the breadth of different approaches that look beyond oneʼs own disciplinary boundaries can offer regarding the future engagement with memory in Scandinavian studies and especially in Scandinavian medieval studies.

This paper presents a part of the author's doctoral thesis concerning the Czech reception of Dutch literature in the first half of the twentieth century. It examines the Czech translations of Kinderen van ons volk and Het donkere licht written by Antoon Coolen and their reception in Czech newspapers and magazines. The aim is to provide an answer to the questions of how the translations were received at the time and whether these value-judgements agree with the current perception of the quality of the translators' work.

Samandrag Havaritrafikken var berging og reparasjon av skip som hadde blitt skada under seilas. Vi kjenner etter kvart havaritrafikken som ei innbringande og til tider sentral næring for byar og tettstader på Agder særleg Vest Agder, og Rogaland. For andre delar av landet er kunnskapen liten eller manglande. Gjennom spreidde glimt ser vi at det har vore havaritrafikk i Aust-Agder. Kor langt opp mot Oslofjorden dette har gått føre seg, manglar det systematisk kunnskap om. Også i Bergen, enkelte stader nordover på Vestlandet og i Trondheim har det vore tilbod om reparasjon av sjøskadde skip. I Nord-Noreg er det så langt ikkje påvist noka fast og organisert havariverksemd. Eg har heller ikkje funne opplysningar om slik verksemd i Nordsjø- og Østersjøområdet. Artikkelen gir ein status for kunnskapen om havariverksemda på landsbasis og legg hovudvekta på å eksemplifisere verknaden og betydninga av havaritrafikken i Stavanger amt. Det vert peika på at kjeldene til havaritrafikken gir omfattande innblikk i sjølve industrien. Samstundes gir dei eit rikt tilfang til auka forståing for økonomiske og sosiale sider ved kysthistoria vår, ikkje minst for byar og strandstader/ladestader. Her ligg det til rette for vidare forsking og samarbeid både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

ABSTRACT: Coastal cultures form a complex area of research, offering new opportunities to investigate and understand the history of cultural encounters and transnational “regions of culture” across the Northern peripheries. This article investigates the connected cultures of coastal communities of Norway, Scotland, and Canada after 1700. A shared, diverse, but similarly sea-focused cultural landscape exists across the North that informs the way in which regional cultural identities are formed and maintained. Using new methodologies of cultural transfer such as entangled histories or histoire croisée, this article pays particular attention to the creation of transient cross-cultural networks and regions stimulated by trade and related contacts across the North Sea and the North Atlantic.

Die Botschaft des Titels ist nicht neu, ein außergewöhnlich großes Aufsehen erregt heute die Meldung einer Unwirklichkeit oder sogar maritimen Phantastik nicht mehr. Das Gefühl, Tschechien hänge mit Geheimnisvollem zusammen, das viel größer sei als das Land selber, gehört wohl zum kulturellen Grundlagenwissen. Da über Böhmen am Meer bekannte Äußerungen vorliegen, lautet unser Vorschlag zu untersuchen, auf welche Weise heute das Motto der Renaissance – plus ultra oder immer weiter - laut einer Formulierung von Kaiser Karl V. (1519), entstanden in der Epoche der Entdeckungsfahrten, weiterzuentwickeln wäre. Wenn man erwägt, dass ja bereits alles entdeckt wurde. Gibt es aber wirklich nichts mehr zu finden? Vielleicht endlich das Gestade oder Ufer des Mare Bohemicum, und dahinter Böhmen am Meer.

Der folgende Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, Sätze zu untersuchen, in denen Wahrnehmungsverben einen Akkusativ mit Infinitiv regieren. Solche AcI-Konstruktionen bereiten dank ihrer nicht eindeutigen syntaktischen Struktur Probleme nicht nur bei ihrer Analyse im Deutschen, sondern auch im Tschechischen. Anhand von Korpusdaten soll hier gezeigt werden, wie häufig Wahrnehmungsverben in solchen Konstruktionen in beiden untersuchten Sprachen vorkommen und durch welche syntaktischen Umgebungen sie charakterisiert werden.
