This study explores a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to liberal arts English education, aiming to promote a balanced value system, critical thinking skills, and a sense of global citizenship—key goals of liberal education. The course was designed and implemented for one semester at a university in Seoul with 86 students majoring in sports-related fields. It focused on developing four competencies: global citizenship, global competence, AI literacy, and self-directed English learning skills. Based on the analysis of student surveys and reflective journals, the following findings were revealed: (1) incorporating recent sports-related topics into the class enhanced students' motivation and engagement; (2) collaborative discussions on social, ethical, and moral issues fostered critical thinking and highlighted English as a valuable tool for expanding their awareness of global issues; and (3) the use of AI tools improved AI literacy, raised awareness of its limitations and ethical concerns, and supported English learning. These findings suggest that CLIL-based general English courses may effectively achieve the goals of liberal education.

Abstract Expressionism has been influenced heavily by the popular theory of America’s undying, progressive spirit, originally conceived by Frederick Jackson Turner and given its most potent form in Western films. Turner’s “Frontier Thesis” was embodied in stories of John Wayne and other cowboy heroes taming the supposed edges of civilization. The mythic West as constructed by Turner and these films cemented American identity as one of exploration and innovation, with the notable condition of Indigenous Americans ceding their sovereignty. While Abstract Expressionism was commonly connected to the mythic West through the origin stories of Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still, the critical understanding of this movement as the height of painterly achievement built on Native American precedents evinces a deeper connection to Turner’s popular Frontier theory. As critics like Clement Greenberg cast flatness as the last frontier of painting, and as artists like Pollock and Barnett Newman claimed Native American ritual practices as a part of their aesthetic lineage, Abstract Expressionism proved as effective as Hollywood Westerns in corroborating and perpetuating the idea of America’s frontier spirit.
This paper redefines hybrid practice as a form of creative institutional design rooted in the problems of dealing with multiple forms of value, an area in which the arts offer pioneering cases for general theory-building around external amalgamation of existing legal forms, internal design within hybrid legal forms, and field-building across communities and economic systems. Informed by, but distinct from, implicitly neoliberal and social-impact literatures on institutional entrepreneurship, hybridity, and agency, this framework extends theories of effectuation to argue for a view of arts entrepreneurship as a laboratory for complex problem-solving both within and well beyond the arts.

Gesang and Didi Kempot, in dominating the market of the music industry in their era, incorporated local capital, i.e., the site in lyrics and scales in melody. Likewise with Markasan. However, little is known about the site and melody used by Markasan as a tool to dominate the keroncong market in East Java in the 1960-1965 period. This study aims to reveal lyrics and melody that songwriters can use to dominate the music competition market in their day. To address this gap, observations, interviews, and documentation studies were carried out. The subjects are Keroncong-Markasanan musicians and RRI as melting pots of keroncong in Surabaya. Through ‘Blauran Wayah Sore’ song, we can observe Markasan’s efforts to construct songs, build resistance, and perpetuate domination in the music industry competition in his day. This research provides a strategy to utilize cultural capital consisting of lyric styles, popular site names, local scales, and identification of favorite song scales in a best-selling effort in the music industry today.
The “Villa La Quiete” complex was built in Treia by the gonfalonier Luigi Angelini who, in 1815, entrusts the project of a “Country Casino” to the architect Giuseppe Valadier. The main building was built around 1820, inside a large park of about 4 hectares, rich in ancient vegetation; later the accessory constructions were built (small temples, pedestrian routes, terracing and underpasses). The building named the Gardener’s House, together with the four propylaea, constitutes the monumental entrance to this large and complex system. The earthquake that struck central Italy, in 2016, severely damaged the built structures and the municipality of Treia, which owns the property, has started a project for the restoration, reuse and anti-seismic improvement of the buildings, to return this important monumental complex to public use. The project for the restoration of the “Gardener’s House” is the first step of this broader program.
Mina Loy’s poems have often overshadowed her autobiographical texts in prose, most of which remain unpublished. This article aims at exploring the British artist’s avant-garde experimentations, relying on two of her 1930s autobiographical texts: the surrealist novel Insel and ‘The Child and the Parent’. I argue that Loy constructs a very personal art of fragmentation, of projection of images and of montage through the modern artist’s ever-shifting consciousness. This optical interplay questions the integrity of the self, thanks to techniques of collage and montage. I focus more specifically on Loy’s strategies of fragmentation and kaleidoscopic recomposition of the autobiographical subject, leading to a dialogue of the arts inspired by painting, photography, and cinema.

In his seminal essay ‘On the Nature of Visions’, Oskar Kokoschka proposes a theory of expressionistic sight that advocates the centrality of both optical and psychological processes in the development of this sensorial construct. The present study argues that Kokoschka’s novel handling of the role of vision in the image forming process implicitly elucidates expressionistic sight as a process fashioned through the dialectical tension that arises from these two prevalent, though oppositional views of artistic vision in the early twentieth century. As such, the historiography of expressionistic sight offered by Kokoschka stands in stark contrast to other prevailing histories written by his interlocutors in fin-de-siècle Germany and Austria.
