« Like a Roll of Negative Film » : montages optiques et fragmentation de soi dans Insel et « The Child and the Parent » de Mina Loy
Abstrak
Mina Loy’s poems have often overshadowed her autobiographical texts in prose, most of which remain unpublished. This article aims at exploring the British artist’s avant-garde experimentations, relying on two of her 1930s autobiographical texts: the surrealist novel Insel and ‘The Child and the Parent’. I argue that Loy constructs a very personal art of fragmentation, of projection of images and of montage through the modern artist’s ever-shifting consciousness. This optical interplay questions the integrity of the self, thanks to techniques of collage and montage. I focus more specifically on Loy’s strategies of fragmentation and kaleidoscopic recomposition of the autobiographical subject, leading to a dialogue of the arts inspired by painting, photography, and cinema.
