Design and Case Analysis of AI Liberal Arts Curriculum by Level with Engaged Learning : With a Focus on AI and Machine Learning

Eunhhee Roh, Moonki Cho

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) is heralding significant changes in industries and the economy. These changes transcend specific academic disciplines, positioning AI as essential knowledge for everyone. Consequently, the importance of formulating AI-related policies and education is increasingly emphasized worldwide. Additionally, as the significance of data-driven decision-making grows, the demand for skills such as data analysis, machine learning, and deep learning is rising. Universities should teach these skills to students to equip them with practical abilities. However, most universities only distinguish between IT majors and non-majors, offering the same curriculum to both groups. This approach does not adequately consider students' diverse learning backgrounds and levels, leading to various problems and difficulties in course content and teaching methods. To address these issues, it is crucial to consider students' diversity and provide them with the autonomy to choose courses that match their levels and interests. This selective, level-based learning approach is expected to result in high satisfaction with AI-related courses, regardless of prior AI learning experience. In this study, we proposed a revised AI liberal arts curriculum comprising three detailed courses: AI and Data Foundations, AI and Machine Learning, and AI Development and Practice. This redesigned curriculum allows students to choose personalized learning pathways and implements an Engaged Learning (EL) model. The study analyzed satisfaction levels regarding course content, evaluation methods, and the EL model by dividing students into two groups based on their prior AI learning experience. The findings confirmed that allowing students to select courses aligned with their levels and interests is more important than their prior AI knowledge. Additionally, implementing the Engaged Learning model proved effective for course delivery. This level-based AI liberal arts curriculum is expected to be extended and applied to other academic subjects as well.

In the beginning, there was the analogue. An alternative history of the beginnings of computer art

Margit Rosen

Since the late 1960s, the historiography of computer art has been developing a canon that is progressively broadening. However, this canon reveals significant blind spots, particularly due to the predominant success of digital computers leading to computer art being almost exclusively identified with digital technology. This identification overlooks other significant classes of computers, notably analogue and hybrid systems, leaving the contributions, artworks, and ideas of many early pioneers in the field unrecognized. Consequently, the history of art created with analogue and hybrid computers remains largely unexplored both in art history and media archaeology. This article seeks to illuminate this relatively obscure chapter of history by introducing the individuals and projects that utilized analogue computers, drawing on previously unknown historical sources. The aim is to underscore the historical significance of a technology that is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest in the field of computer science. The findings reveal that before the advent of artistic experiments with digital computers, analogue computers were the subject of pioneering exploration. The real-time intuitive operation of analogue computers was a unique advantage, foreshadowing a human-machine relationship now commonplace with digital technology. The narrative of the analogue computer constitutes an essential domain for understanding the diversity of computing technologies at the dawn of the computer age. Despite the scarcity of sources documenting these artistic endeavors, this article serves as a call to action for further research in this neglected area.

Power to the People

Milica Topalović, Jan Westerheide

Who owns energy sources and governs the energy transition? How can people mobilize for alternatives to fossil dependencies? There is no better place to ask these questions in Germany than the Rheinisches Revier, the region around the surface mine Tagebau Hambach, where the advancing coal mines and the desire for cheap energy have shaped the territory for over a century. The region has recently emerged as one of the battlegrounds of the global climate struggle, culminating in the occupation and eviction of the hamlet of Lützerath in early 2023.The multinational energy corporation RWE (formerly the Rhein-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke AG) governs all vital processes in the region, from geological structures to social realities and imaginaries, making it omnipresent in every aspect of life. Even as mining operations are being phased out in favor of renewable energy as part of Germany’s intended Kohleausstieg 2030, RWE remains in control of energy transition: in this corporate landscape, wind and solar parks are simply added to coal-fired power plants, based on the unchanged rationale of increasing profits that characterizes the extraction of coal. Fridays for Future, Alle Dörfer bleiben1, and other activist and citizen organizations continue their struggle across the region, contesting the corporate greenwashing which deepens capital’s control of the land as well as perpetuates the interconnected crises of climate change, social polarization, cultural erasure, and ecological exhaustion. They demand not just an immediate exit from coal but also a democratically controlled and socially just transition to renewable energy. The world of ecological energy commons, democratically governed, can emerge. Power to the people!

Effectiveness of Public Health Digital Surveillance Systems for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at Mass Gatherings: Systematic Review

Noha Maddah, Arpana Verma, Maryam Almashmoum et al.

BackgroundMass gatherings (MGs; eg, religious, sporting, musical, sociocultural, and other occasions that draw large crowds) pose public health challenges and concerns related to global health. A leading global concern regarding MGs is the possible importation and exportation of infectious diseases as they spread from the attendees to the general population, resulting in epidemic outbreaks. Governments and health authorities use technological interventions to support public health surveillance and prevent and control infectious diseases. ObjectiveThis study aims to review the evidence on the effectiveness of public health digital surveillance systems for infectious disease prevention and control at MG events. MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted in January 2022 using the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus databases to examine relevant articles published in English up to January 2022. Interventional studies describing or evaluating the effectiveness of public health digital surveillance systems for infectious disease prevention and control at MGs were included in the analysis. Owing to the lack of appraisal tools for interventional studies describing and evaluating public health digital surveillance systems at MGs, a critical appraisal tool was developed and used to assess the quality of the included studies. ResultsIn total, 8 articles were included in the review, and 3 types of MGs were identified: religious (the Hajj and Prayagraj Kumbh), sporting (the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Federation International Football Association World Cup, and the Micronesian Games), and cultural (the Festival of Pacific Arts) events. In total, 88% (7/8) of the studies described surveillance systems implemented at MG events, and 12% (1/8) of the studies described and evaluated an enhanced surveillance system that was implemented for an event. In total, 4 studies reported the implementation of a surveillance system: 2 (50%) described the enhancement of the system that was implemented for an event, 1 (25%) reported a pilot implementation of a surveillance system, and 1 (25%) reported an evaluation of an enhanced system. The types of systems investigated were 2 syndromic, 1 participatory, 1 syndromic and event-based, 1 indicator- and event-based, and 1 event-based surveillance system. In total, 62% (5/8) of the studies reported timeliness as an outcome generated after implementing or enhancing the system without measuring its effectiveness. Only 12% (1/8) of the studies followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for evaluating public health surveillance systems and the outcomes of enhanced systems based on the systems’ attributes to measure their effectiveness. ConclusionsOn the basis of the review of the literature and the analysis of the included studies, there is limited evidence of the effectiveness of public health digital surveillance systems for infectious disease prevention and control at MGs because of the absence of evaluation studies.

The Warsaw Autumn International Music Festival — Overcoming the Boundaries between East and West

Nikolskaya Irina I.

In the late 1940s — early 1950s, a huge gap appeared between the development of musical cultures of Western and Eastern Europe, and it was Poland that initiated bridging it. Therefore, the emergence of the Warsaw Autumn Festival of contemporary music, which has become the largest, was not coincidental. The article is devoted to studying this cultural phenomenon, which has a significant scientific novelty, because the Warsaw Autumn has not yet been subjected to a detailed scientific analysis in Russian musicology. According to the organizers of the new festival — young Polish composers Tadeusz Baird and Kazimierz Serocki, — Warsaw was to become a center of contemporary music, no less important than the avant-garde music festivals in Darmstadt, Donaueschingen, Cologne or Milan. However, the purpose of the Warsaw Autumn is more ambitious — to provide a complete aesthetic and stylistic picture of modern music, and not just avant-garde music, as was the case in Western European countries. The repertoire policy of the festival covered several areas: avantgarde music, more traditional music, the classics of the 20th century, and promotion of Polish music. The festival laid claim to being a reliable display of contemporary music in the world, reacted to the changes in global music, and soon became the largest music arena of the 20th century. It was attended by the most prominent composers of the East and West. For the socialist countries, it became a true “window on Europe” and a platform for mastering new techniques of composition. Without the Warsaw Autumn festival and its profound influence on composers of socialist countries, it would be utterly impossible to imagine the development of musical art of the entire region. This article suggests focusing on the early period of the festival, from 1956 (when it was established) to the early 1980s.

Digital Commons to Hyku: An Institutional Repository Migration at a Small Liberal Arts University

Laura Baird, Johanna Meetz

Introduction: Pacific University Libraries has had an institutional repository since 2009, when it selected Digital Commons to host a collection of theses and dissertations. Since then, the scope of the services has grown to include publishing open access journals as well as housing the books published by Pacific University Press—a library-born, hybrid, open access press. As our needs have changed, and with Elsevier’s acquisition of bepress in 2017, the University migrated from bepress’ Digital Commons platform to an open source Hyku platform hosted by Ubiquity Repositories. Description of Program: As the first academic institution working with Ubiquity Repositories on migration and implementation, we were involved in the process of data extraction, normalization, mapping, ingest, and validation. Lessons Learned: We learned the importance of having a mutual understanding of a platform’s goals, data structure and mapping, and standards in implementation decisions. Next Steps: As higher education continues to adapt to the changes brought by COVID-19, it has never seemed more important to utilize platforms that share the values of libraries worldwide. We hope that migrating to an open source platform will be a step toward more open scholarship, despite the current challenges and resource scarcity brought about by the pandemic.

Art between Manliness and Activism: The Role of Ukrainian Women Artists During Political Transformations

Kateryna Iakovlenko

This article is based on the belief that the hierarchy of Ukrainian artistic community was mainly male-centred, while female artists had to work much harder than their male colleagues just to be recognised as artists. Therefore, artistic talent was generally associated with personal characteristics rather than artistic skills. In the 1960s, manliness became one of the important features of art and the intelligentsia in general, which adhered to the ideas of human rights and justice. According to the artists’ ideas, the same qualities – manliness, courage, honesty, and willpower – should manifest themselves in the artworks. The crisis of the Soviet Union and its artistic structures, the subsequent Perestroika, and the independence of Ukraine brought fundamental economic and social changes putting this activist tradition of nonconformist female art on hold. The above-mentioned trends re-emerged after 2004, when a new generation of artists, who successfully incorporated elements of the tradition of social activism, was born. In my paper, I will talk about the continuity of the tradition of female artists’ activism, about its features in Ukraine from the 1960s to the present day. I will try to answer the question: what is the role of the idea of manliness in Soviet and Ukrainian art, and what is the role of female artists and their artistic practice in fighting for political and social justice.

Spanish Version of the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire

M. J. Pérez-Fabello, A. Campos

Objective The current interest in mental imagery in fields such as sport and physical training, health, education, underscore the need for designing general measures of imagery vividness that include different sensorial modalities such as the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire (Psi-Q; Andrade et al., 2014). The Psi-Q measures imagery vividness in seven sensorial modalities with a factorial structure of seven factors corresponding to the sensorial modalities, and has good internal consistency. The aim of the present study was to translate the Psi-Q into Spanish and to assess its psychometric properties. Methods The questionnaire was back-translated, and administered to 394 fine arts undergraduates. Moreover, this test was compared to other questionnaires measuring different types de imagery. Results A confirmatory factor analysis found that the Psi-Q had seven factors (vision, sound, smell, taste, touch, bodily sensation, and emotional feeling) with results similar to the original test. Values suggested a better fit for the model of the short version. The internal consistency values were 0.93 for the long and 0.89 for the short test. The Psi-Q subscales correlated significantly (p < 0.01) with the total of the Betts’ QMI subscales, and the VVIQ, with the highest significance observed between the Psi-Q Touch and Betts’ QMI Cutaneous (r = −0.57), and between the Psi-Q Olfactory and Betts’ QMI Smell (r = −0.56). Owing to its novelty, the high correlation and significance (p < 0.01) between Psi-Q Vision and the OSIVQ Object (r = 0.36) is worth noting. Conclusion The Spanish version of the Psi-Q was an adequate measure for evaluating different sensorial modalities of imagery vividness, and exhibited similar psychometric properties to those of the original version. The growing interest in mental imagery in different fields of application justifies the need for adapting the Psi-Q for the Spanish speaking population. This questionnaire is a valuable tool for the understanding of imagery as a psychological process, and as a variable influencing other processes.

Introduction: On Mountains

Jonathan Pitches

In this general introduction to the issue, I lay out the case for performance and mountain arts research generally to be more fully integrated into Mountain Studies. I pinpoint two salient examples of where mountains’ status and agency has been elevated through performative means and recognize the wider project, Performing Mountains, for which this issue is a key outcome. Finally, I position the articles in relation to key themes which emerge across the range of submissions: Mountains and Impossibility; Translating Mountains; Symbolizing Mountains; Mountains as Sites of Protest and Political Expression; Mountain Representation; and Mountains, Scenography and Materiality.

Les Éditions Paul-Martial. Un exemple de photographie publicitaire industrielle de la modernité

Anne-Céline Callens

During the period of prosperity in the 1920’s, new commercial strategies were implemented to promote manufacturing. The publishing house, Editions Paul-Martial, became one of the most innovative companies in the field of advertising-related publishing. From 1929 to 1960, the company released many photographic reports for large French industrial companies. Studies of its archives shows that photographers of the company developed a specific aesthetic sharing many aspects with the avant-garde artistic movement.
