Examining the Domestic Sex Labour Industry in Nepal: Perspectives from Hotels, Streets, and Restaurants

Mayanath Ghimire, Prem Kumari Magar, Anjay Kumar Mishra

The investigator examined research results related to the topic that have appeared in publications at both national and international scales. Female enumerators were employed to engage with female sex workers and assured them of the confidentiality of their personal details and locations. The collected data were analysed, and a report was generated. The reasons for engaging in sex work can include the inability to meet personal needs, expenses related to raising and educating children, daily household costs, and money for festival celebrations. Women without a steady income, facing unemployment, experiencing loneliness, suffering from psychological stress, dealing with domestic violence, or having a husband who remarries, may resort to sex work as a means to cover debts or seek a new source of income. Three categories of female sex workers have been identified in the mid-eastern region of Nepal. These include those operating on the streets, those working from home, and those affiliated with established locations. Their earnings range from NRs. 500 to 20,000 depending on various factors. Travel expenses are higher compared to other costs. Sex workers frequently encounter issues such as low pay, sexual violence, theft, and physical aggression from clients. Among these groups, street-based sex workers remain the most at risk compared to their home-based and established counterparts. Consider non-criminal labour performed legally, shifting the viewpoint to acknowledge it with equal respect as other professions associated with female sex workers. Offer health insurance, avoiding police arrests, and treat sex work as a legitimate occupation. Recognize and value sex workers as professionals in their field.

Profiling Ecotourists at a South African Wetland Park Based on Demographics and Participation in Ecologically-responsible Tourism Practices

Michael KUSENI, Uwe P. HERMANN, Portia P.S. SIFOLO

Wetland Parks are some of the most treasured destinations conserving rich natural and cultural tourism resources. As such, wetland parks are emerging as conducive for ecotourists to create memorable tourism experiences. Despite emerging as suitable areas for the creation of memorable ecotourism experiences, some wetland parks are currently attracting low numbers of eco-tourists, which might be linked to their failure to meet customer needs. Considering the potential of iSimangaliso Wetland Park (IWP) and because empirical studies of this nature are scarce in developing countries, this study aimed to profile ecotourists at IWP. To reach this aim, a quantitative survey was conducted at IWP with 323 conveniently and purposively sampled respondents. Data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results reveal that most ecotourists to IWP are domestic ecotourists aged between 31 and 40 years. The ecotourists are motivated by the need to relax and enjoy leisure. The ecotourists participate in different ecologically-responsible tourism practices with the most popular form being sustainable, nature and low-impact tourism practices. However, their participation in environmental tourism forms varies in terms of demographic factors. Understanding ecotourists' demographics and participation in ecologically responsible inclined tourism is imperative in setting management and marketing strategies.

Chris A. Diminyi, Demitrus O. Oba, Grace N. Abutu et al.

The aim of this study was to assess the challenges facing the development of Igala festivals into cultural tourism products in Kogi state, Nigeria. The research adopted descriptive case study design using qualitative and quantitative approaches (mixed method). Snowball, judgemental and simple random sampling methods were adopted for this study. Snowball and judgemental sampling techniques were used to select the required number of interviewees across nine communities. Five key informants each from the nine communities were identified and selected to provide on the subject matter, while simple random sampling was used to select respondents that completed the close and open-ended questionnaires. Result shows that inadequate funding, government insensitivity, lack of government/private sector collaboration, insecurity, and the change factor brought by modernity and religious interference are the major challenges affecting the development of festivals into cultural tourism attractions in Igala. Although Igala festivals have high potential for cultural tourism development in Kogi state, government has not taken any responsibility in supporting the development of these festivals. Chi-square result also indicates that there is a strong relationship between Igala cultural festivals and tourism development in Kogi State. It was therefore recommended that the government of Kogi state should take responsibility by supporting policies that will favour tourism and provide enabling environment for private sector to thrive.

Profiling Disabled People as Unrealised Potentially Lucrative Tourism Market Segment in South Africa

Tawanda Makuyana, Engelina du Plessis , Oliver Chikuta

The study aimed at (profiling) determining sampled individuals with impairments’ likelihood to participate in tourism. The quantitative-descriptive approach used online forum/group discussions as augmented by questionnaire survey which was conducted from August 2018 to March 2019. The study fostered a theoretical view as intending to give background information using academic journal articles and books. The study snowballed a total of 372 participants. The results from the demographic profiling were skewed towards the idea that access-need market (individuals with temporary and permanent impairments) as unrealised and untapped potential lucrative tourism business. The study concluded socio-demographic information may enhance further exploration into the access-needs tourism market in South Africa. This is because, the lack of such information poses development, management and marketing challenges when it comes to accessible tourism. To this effect, tourism service providers are challenged to consider the needs of this largely unserved market, through planning towards strategic preparatory approaches which may enhance channelling the potential into tourism business. The value of the study is centred on self-representation of persons with impairments, which addresses a major gap in literature, in that it focuses on individuals with impairments as an untapped tourism market segment in South Africa.

Theft crimes against tourists and visitors in Slovenia

Dejan Paliska, Katarina Mušič, Jelena Ćeklić et al.

Purpose – This paper investigates the nature of theft crimes against tourist and visitors in Slovenia. The main objective of the study was to identify the characteristics of theft victims in tourist areas and to analyze the differences in risk between various crime scenes and types of crime. Design/Methodology – Using data from police crime statistics and applying a binary logistic regression, we analyzed the relationship between the crime scene and nature of the crime, as well as between the domestic/foreign status of the visitors and type of crime. Since the study uses data from official police database, one of the major challenges was to eliminate crime events from the analysis that occurred outside tourism areas.. This problem was addressed by using geotagged photos from Flickr platform with different spatial queries. Findings – The findings offer evidence indicating that the victims’ backgrounds (status and age group) and accommodation type, determine their vulnerability to certain crimes. The results show that foreign victims are more likely to suffer burglary than their domestic counterparts. In addition, crimes against foreign visitors and tourists are more likely to involve seniors, amount to larger losses, and take place in hotels, motels, and camps. On the other hand, crimes against domestic visitors are more likely to take place during evenings in bars, restaurants, and in vacation homes. Originality of the research – This study shows that combining data from different public sources into one analysis allows a more reliable analysis of police crime records.

Economic analysis of tourism enterprise solvency and the possibility of bankruptcy: the case of the Thomas Cook Group

Nurkhodzha Akbulayev, Nigar Guliyeva , Gunay Aslanova

Whether firms are in the last phase of their life cycle can be seen through bankruptcy prediction models. The bankruptcy of companies concerns not only shareholders and creditors, but also an entire economy, affecting all stakeholders directly or indirectly. It is important for all segments of companies to anticipate possible bankruptcies as early as possible. In this context, a number of studies have been carried out and models for the prevention of bankruptcy of companies have been developed. A number of models have been developed not only for the prevention of corporate bankruptcy but also for revealing why postbankruptcy companies have gone bankrupt. In the paper under consideration, the results of the study of the bankruptcy probability are presented as the key component of business solvency through the example of the recently bankrupted travel company "Thomas Cook Group". We considered Altman and DuPont models as the main measures. The major issue of the study is the specificity of these models, their unique laws for different countries, markets and industries. Based on the results compared, the best model for forecasting bankruptcy and return on equity calculating will be selected. As a result of the study and analysis, the researchers tried to investigate why the firm went bankrupt. The most appropriate models were selected and the equity table of the company was analyzed. The fact that the firm was operating in the international dimension and went bankrupt clearly had an undisputed effect in many countries I which it operated.
