Empathy Development in Music Education: A Review of Literature

Evan Powers

The purpose of this report was to review the literature on and closely related to empathy development in music education and to augment music educators’ knowledge of empathy development practices within their own professional contexts. In this review of literature, I explore empathy development in music education by investigating (a) the definitions, types, and characteristics of empathy; (b) empathy education; (c) empathy in the context of musical group interaction; (d) empathy in the context of music ensembles; and (e) empathy development in music education settings. Scholars have suggested that empathy may support positive behaviors including perspective-taking, active listening, helping, and caring for and about others. Due in part to the empathic characteristics of music and interactive music activities, music classrooms provide a potentially empathy-rich environment in which teachers may engage students in empathy development. I end the review by discussing implications and suggested practices for music educators.

Music Education from a Cross-Cultural Perspective: Comparing Music Teaching Methods in Different Countries

Zhan Haiyun

In the background of deepening globalization, music education as an important bridge of cultural exchange, its cross-cultural perspective research is particularly important. This paper aims to investigate the influence of cultural background on music education through the comparative analysis of music teaching methods in different countries, and put forward some suggestions to promote international cooperation in music education. The research selects China, the United States, Germany, Japan and other countries as typical cases, comprehensively uses literature analysis, case study and interview methods, and analyzes the characteristics and formation reasons of music education in these countries from multiple dimensions such as social and economic conditions, cultural values and policy environment. Research indicates that while the approaches to music education vary widely across nations, its educational impact and societal significance are universally acknowledged. Building on this understanding, the study proposes several strategies to foster the global integration of music education. These include enhancing international collaboration among music educators and creating a pool of shared instructional materials to bridge cultural and educational divides. This study not only enriches the theoretical achievements in the field of cross-cultural music education, but also provides a valuable reference for practical teaching.

The Effect of Music Therapy on Psychological Outcomes for Neurological Conditions: A Systematic Review

Sarah H. Gardener, Elizabeta B. Mukaetova-Ladinska, Nellinne Antoinette Perera

<i>Background and Objectives:</i> Music therapy has been used as a non-pharmacological treatment for neurological conditions, supporting cognitive, psychosocial, behavioural and motor functions. Although it is evidence-based, safe, and cost-effective, music therapy remains uncommon in neurorehabilitation services, largely due to a lack of quality research. This review aims to understand the effect of music therapy on psychological outcomes for neurological conditions using randomised clinical trials (RCTs). <i>Materials and Methods:</i> A systematic review of literature published in four databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus which is inclusive of Medline and EMBASE) from 1 January 2015 to 31 January 2025 was performed. <i>Results:</i> Ten RCT’s comprising 469 participants were included in this review, with seven studies synthesised using a systematic review without meta-analysis approach. MT was found to improve cognitive function in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), but not in those with stroke or Huntington’s disease (HD). In HD, improvements in cognitive function were noted in the comparator group. MT led to significant improvements in emotional well-being in stroke survivors, though not in mood. Behavioural outcomes did not significantly improve in HD, while quality of life improved following MT for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and stroke. <i>Conclusions:</i> Overall, MT was perceived as a positive intervention with potential psychological benefits. However, findings were mixed, and the heterogeneity of population, intervention, comparator, outcomes, and study design limited the ability to detect group differences and reduced confidence in the findings. Future research should focus on larger-scale RCTs that reduce bias, accommodate population diversity, and clearly define and distinguish MT from treatment-as-usual. Better standardisation of outcomes and improved reporting will be essential to evaluate the efficacy of music therapy in neurological conditions and strengthen the evidence base for its use in clinical practice.

What do Chinese adolescents derive from music? —A literature review on Chinese studies

Zaiyang Xu

The purpose of this literature review was to explore the role of music in the development of Chinese adolescents. Gaining this insight is crucial for music educators to effectively engage with an increasingly multicultural music teaching environment, as well as to address the underrepresentation of Chinese studies in English literature. By using the literature visualization tool VOS viewer 1.6.20, I generated a network visualization based on 3,176 studies selected from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). This visualization helped highlight the scope and themes of research on ‘music and adolescents’ in the Chinese literature. After a selection process from four clusters involving content analysis that focused on the credibility, utility, and authenticity of literature content, this review highlighted four key aspects of what Chinese adolescents derive from music. In response to the challenges adolescents face, I put forward suggestions for music educators and recommendations for further research.

John Paul II, Catholic Values, and Russia: Based on the Documentary Films by Tamara Yakzhina

Dorota Kulczycka

The author aims to show the work of Tamara Yakzhina, a Russian journalist and filmmaker of Polish origin, who for years collected materials about Pope John Paul II, with a view to bringing his personality and work closer to Russian audience. The paper concentrates on two documentaries: Fear Not! I Pray for You! (2005) and The Pope Who Did Not Die (2012). Karol Wojtyła is portrayed in both films as a figure seeking dialogue with followers of other religions, including the Orthodox Church. Moreover, the article brings to light John Paul II’s conversations with the Russian, his command of the Russian language, and his passion for Tchaikovsky’s music, Russian literature and philosophy. The author reveals that the Pope, when speaking about the most important matters, used quotes from the works of Dostoevsky. Following Yakzhina and the authorities that she mentions, the author speculates why the Holy Father never visited Russia, even though he was invited by the heads of the state. The author also shows the choice of topics the filmmaker made to accurately bring the figure of the ‘Rimsky papa’, or ‘the Roman Pope’, to Russian-speaking audiences.

Affective Responses to Music: An Affective Science Perspective

Federico Lauria

Music has strong emotional powers. How are we to understand affective responses to music? What does music teach us about emotions? Why are musical emotions important? Despite the rich literature in philosophy and the empirical sciences, particularly psychology and neuroscience, little attention has been paid to integrating these approaches. This extensive review aims to redress this imbalance and establish a mutual dialogue between philosophy and the empirical sciences by presenting the main philosophical puzzles from an affective science perspective. The chief problem is contagion. Sometimes, listeners perceive music as expressing some emotion and this elicits the same emotion in them. Contagion is perplexing because it collides with the leading theory of emotions as experiences of values. This article mostly revolves around the critical presentation of the philosophical solutions to this problem in light of recent developments in emotion theory and affective science. It also highlights practical issues, particularly the role of musical emotions in well-being and health, by tackling the paradox of sad music, i.e., the question of why people enjoy sad music. It thus bridges an important gap between theoretical and real-life issues as well as between philosophical and empirical investigations on affective responses to music.

A survey of United States adult privacy perspectives and willingness to share real-world data

Rachele M. Hendricks-Sturrup, Christine Y. Lu

Abstract Objective: Real-world data privacy is a complex yet underexplored topic. To date, few studies have reported adult perspectives around real-world data privacy and willingness to share real-world data with researchers. Methods: Relevant survey items were identified in the literature, adapted and pilot tested among a small convenience sample, and finalized for distribution. The survey was distributed electronically in April 2021 among adults (≥18 years of age) registered in ResearchMatch (www.researchmatch.org). Microsoft Excel was used to assess descriptive statistics across demographical items and four privacy-related items. Results: Of 402 completed responses received, half of respondents (∼50%) expressed willingness to share their prescription history data and music streaming data with researchers and unwillingness to share real-world data from several other sources. Most (53–93%) of participants expressed concern with five statements reflecting the sharing and use of their digital data online. Most participants (71–75%) agreed with four statements focused on individual measures taken to protect their personal privacy and disagreed (77–85%) with two statements centered on not being concerned about sharing or 3rd party access to their personal data online. Conclusions: Our observations indicate an important yet unmet need to further explore and address real-world data privacy concerns among US adults engaging as prospective research participants.

Music therapy effect on anxiety reduction among patients with cancer: A meta-analysis

Lu Zang, Chunliang Cheng, Yongxin Zhou et al.

IntroductionThe study aimed to investigate the effect of music therapy on anxiety alleviation among cancer patients.MethodsA comprehensive literature research was performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science). Fifteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The risk of bias for the RCTs was evaluated by the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Anxiety levels were extracted to synthesize the combined effect by using meta-analysis. All analyses were performed using R version 4.0.4.ResultsIn total, 15 RCTs met the inclusion criteria involving 1320 cancer patients (662 patients in the experimental group and 658 patients in the controlled group). The majority of interventions were performed with recorded music lasting for 15-60 minutes. Compared with standard care, music intervention had a moderate superiority of anxiety alleviation (SMD: –0.54, 95% CI: [–0.92, –0.16]).DiscussionMusic intervention could reduce cancer-related anxiety moderately. Nevertheless, the result should be interpreted with caution as high heterogeneity in this pooled study. Well-designed trials with higher quality were still warranted in the future.

THE ROLE OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN IN MUSIC EDUCATION

Bahareh Behzadaval, M. Vahedi

Music education is known as a unique field in educational science; however, powerful educational models are still less understood and needs to be improved. The main aim of this research is to study the output of Instructional Design (ID) in music education. The method used in this study is an analytical-documentary approach. For this purpose, the literature related to this field which published since 2000 has been studied from available search engines such as Google Scholar. Learning music encompasses a wide range of skills which should be mastered. Further, The attitude towards music education has changed in the past few years, as some of the music educational aspects have been noticed to be applicable in people lives beside the music artistic aspects. These various aspects could baffle the teachers and instructors in their educational attempts. literature search shows that in scientific research field has been less attention given to ID in music education. The term of ID formed and developed with progress in the field of educational psychology in the 20 century. There are various models exist in instructional design in accordance with teacher attitude and approaches. These paradigms can help teachers to determine and reach to the certain goals. In this article we studied how the main elements of the general model of instructional design ADDIE, including Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation, can guide music teachers to form and develop their teaching plans.

Effectiveness of music therapy: a summary of systematic reviews based on randomized controlled trials of music interventions

H. Kamioka, K. Tsutani, M. Yamada et al.

Objective The objective of this review was to summarize evidence for the effectiveness of music therapy (MT) and to assess the quality of systematic reviews (SRs) based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Study design An SR of SRs based on RCTs. Methods Studies were eligible if they were RCTs. Studies included were those with at least one treatment group in which MT was applied. We searched the following databases from 1995 to October 1, 2012: MEDLINE via PubMed, CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Web of Science, Global Health Library, and Ichushi-Web. We also searched all Cochrane Database and Campbell Systematic Reviews up to October 1, 2012. Based on the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, we identified a disease targeted for each article. Results Twenty-one studies met all inclusion criteria. This study included 16 Cochrane reviews. As a whole, the quality of the articles was very good. Eight studies were about “Mental and behavioural disorders (F00-99)”; there were two studies on “Diseases of the nervous system (G00-99)” and “Diseases of the respiratory system (J00-99)”; and there was one study each for “Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-90)”, “Diseases of the circulatory system (I00-99)”, and “Pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (O60)”. MT treatment improved the following: global and social functioning in schizophrenia and/or serious mental disorders, gait and related activities in Parkinson’s disease, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality. Conclusion This comprehensive summary of SRs demonstrated that MT treatment improved the following: global and social functioning in schizophrenia and/or serious mental disorders, gait and related activities in Parkinson’s disease, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality. MT may have the potential for improving other diseases, but there is not enough evidence at present. Most importantly, no specific adverse effect or harmful phenomenon occurred in any of the studies, and MT was well tolerated by almost all patients.

Using technology-mediated music-making at school with children with autism and intellectual disabilities: a participatory multidisciplinary approach

L. Kossyvaki, Georgios E. Papadakis, S. Curran

Despite the existence of extensive literature on the benefits of either technology or music in children with autism and intellectual disabilities (ID), research studies exploring the impact of interventions combining the two are scant. This paper presents a collaborative multidisciplinary approach between school staff, university researchers and a business in their development of a technology-mediated music-making system (i.e. the Cosmo units) that aims to improve the quality of life of the former population. Data were collected via observations of individual pupils and focus group interviews with the school staff. The results, discussed in the light of relevant literature, incorporate both the changes applied to the Cosmo system and the benefits for school staff, university researchers and the business through being part of this participatory project.
