The Aesthetics of Mediacracy: Film Portrait of Silvio Berlusconi between Political Image and Cultural Representation

L. Novikova

The analysis of media representations of political power is considered as an important tool for comprehension of transformations in political communication and symbolic mechanisms of legitimation in contemporary film and cultural studies. The phenomenon of mediacracy is of a particular relevance in this context. The mass media function not merely as channels of representation but as active agents in the construction of political reality. Cinema, owing to its capacity for metaphorical generalization and critical reflection, captures these processes through visual strategies and narrative forms. The article is aimed at analyzing the cinematic image of Silvio Berlusconi as an example of the interaction between political image-making and cultural representation in the conditions of mediacracy. The methodological framework of the study includes the theoretical concepts of Paul Virilio and Fredric Jameson, allowing the media image of the politician to be interpreted as a simulacrum oriented toward repetition, emotional impact, and symbolic circulation rather than embodied political presence. The research material consists of films by Italian directors of the second half of the twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries, in particular works by Federico Fellini, Nanni Moretti, and Paolo Sorrentino, where Berlusconi’s screen image functions as a symptom of profound cultural and social shifts. The development of Berlusconi’s cinematic portrait from indirect allegorical representations to explicit satirical critique, reflecting the growing role of television and media narratives in Italian political life, is considered in the article. It is concluded that cinematic representations of Berlusconism perform a diagnostic function, revealing the mechanisms of the fusion of political power and mass culture, as well as the consequences of the mediatization of politics for the cultural context of modern society. The analysis of Berlusconi’s cinematic portrait in a broader perspective makes it possible to consider mediacracy both as a political phenomenon and a symptom of deeper anthropological transformations associated with the dominance of visual communication over verbal discourse and the reduction of the public space of rational comprehension to the sphere of emotional recognizability.

Branding process of cultural heritage in the context of rural revitalization in China: a case study of Qingtian County

Mei Zhang

Constructing geographical brands is an effective way to realize the creative transformation of cultural resources and promote the empowerment of rural revitalization via cultural industries. The process and mechanism by which cultural resources empower geographical brands have not yet been systematically studied. Based on Bourdieu’s capital theory, this paper examines how Qingtian County (Zhejiang Province) transformed its diverse cultural resources into various forms of capital through the branding process. The findings demonstrate that successful geographical brand development requires selecting the region’s typical cultural resources, including agricultural heritage, intangible cultural heritage, and foreign culture, and then transforming them into symbolic and cultural capital. The branding process reflects the combination of the functions of service-oriented government and the vitality and agency of the society. Cultural elements brought over by overseas Chinese are integrated with local culture, lending the brands a unique transnational flavor. This network of overseas Chinese has become a source of essential social capital and a distribution channel for importing foreign commodities and exporting Chinese agricultural products.

Vesna Vučinić Nešković, Katarina Mikljan

This paper explores the theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions of the anthropology of diplomacy to the study of international relations, emphasizing its relevance in addressing contemporary global challenges. Anthropology of diplomacy highlights Interdisciplinarity, ethnographic approaches, and critical reflections on diplomatic practices, examining key concepts such as diplomatic discourse, everyday diplomacy, and embodied practices. The study sheds light on the application of anthropological methods in global health diplomacy, emphasizing the interconnectedness of health, foreign policy, and national security. The authors analyze how anthropological insights can deepen the understanding of international tensions, negotiation processes, and cross-cultural interactions, ultimately fostering fairer and more peaceful global relations. The paper also examines key debates among scholars in the field and proposes future research directions that could enhance the use of anthropological knowledge in diplomacy. The study further emphasizes the importance of applying anthropological methods to non-traditional diplomatic settings, such as informal negotiations and local community interactions, which often reveal overlooked dynamics. By integrating perspectives on global health diplomacy, the paper also underscores how health-related challenges can function as critical arenas for fostering international cooperation and redefining power relations. Additionally, it highlights the potential for anthropological approaches to bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding between state and non-state actors. The authors argue that exploring the interplay of cultural norms and diplomatic practices provides valuable insights for addressing contemporary geopolitical challenges. Ultimately, the anthropology of diplomacy offers a unique framework for examining diplomacy as a socially embedded and continually evolving practice, opening new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Scientific and Publishing Activities of M. Rylskyi Institute of Art Studies, Folkloristics and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the Field of Research of the Russian Military Aggression in Ukraine (2014–2025)

O. Kalach

The publication activities of M. Rylskyi Institute of Art Studies, Folkloristics and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (hereinafter – IASFE) in the field of research of the Russian-Ukrainian war in general and the peculiarities of adaptation of internally displaced persons (hereinafter – IDPs) in particular during the eleven years of Russian armed aggression in Ukraine are analyzed and summarized in the article. The historiographical basis for writing the submitted study is formed by the editions, those are freely available in electronic version on the IASFE website (https://www.etnolog.org.ua/) in the sections “Monographies”, “Collected Scientific Works”, “Ethnographical and Artistic Heritage”, “Periodic Editions” (“Folk Art and Ethnology” journal, annuals “Materials to Ukrainian Ethnology”, “Slavic World”) according to the year of publication. At the current stage of development of Ukrainian ethnological science, there has appeared a need for a historiographic generalization of the development of Ukrainian Ethnology in the direction of research of individual vulnerable categories of the population, problems of linguistic, cultural, social and everyday life adaptation, transformation of identification practices. Taking into account the multifaceted nature of these processes, the analysis of the read materials has been conducted according to the thematic-chronological principle, which, in our opinion, allows for a comprehensive assessment of the level of study of the stated problem. A historiographical review of the publication activities of the IASFE in the specified period is a rethinking of the scientific contribution of Ukrainian and foreign scholars to the study of the military anthropology and preservation of the intangible cultural heritage of Ukrainians, the organization of everyday life in wartime, commemorative practices and a number of the other relevant issues of the contemporaneity. It is noted in the conclusions that the works concerning the peculiarities of IDPs adaptation, the problems of their employment and livelihoods, are mainly of a local and regional nature (Vinnytsia and Ciscarpathia Regions) and initiate similar ethnological studies at the All-Ukrainian level.

Military and Martial Thematics on the Pages of “Folk Art and Ethnology” Journal: Historiography, Subject Matter, Trends of Comprehension

Mykola Bekh

The article is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of the representation of military and martial thematics on the pages of the «Folk Art and Ethnology» journal in various historical periods. Having based on a wide range of published works, the evolution of scientific approaches is traced – from the ideologically limited Soviet interpretation of military events to the modern interdisciplinary anthropological reading of the phenomena of war. The content of early materials those have reflected the Soviet heroic model and contributed to the formation of the official military narrative is revealed. It is shown that after Ukraine gained independence, the journal has been consistently reoriented towards understanding the war experience in the light of national historical memory, ethnocultural specificity, and rethinking the traumatic events of the 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of research strategies after 2014 and, especially, after the full-scale Russian invasion of 2022, when field research, the collection of oral testimonies, the analysis of the everyday life of military and civilians, social practices of resistance, new forms of rituality, and local manifestations of military culture start to be of a leading importance. It has been found that the journal is becoming a key platform for the emergence of a new trend in Ukraine – the ethnology and anthropology of modern warfare. The interdisciplinary nature of contemporary studies, the involvement of foreign authors, and the focus on issues of cultural heritage, demographic change, military images and the transformations of cultural practices in wartime are emphasized.

Rakia among the Albanians of the Balkans: borrowing technology, cultural phenomenon and a constant of tradition

A. Novik

The paper addresses the special status of rakia (an alcoholic drink obtained by distillation from fermented fruits and berries) in the culture and traditions of Albanians in the Western Balkans. The technological revolution in the processing of raw plants, which ensured the spread of the production of strong drinks in the Mediterranean in the 7th—12th centuries, enabled the conditions for the rooting of rakia in the food system, ritual sphere, cultural exchange and social life of the peoples of South-Eastern Europe: Albanians, Greeks, Eastern Romans, Southern Slavs, etc. The study in the paradigm of anthropology aims to identify the conditions and mechanisms for the entry of innovative food technologies into home production and industry, the pattern of their inclusion or, conversely, rejection from the system of traditional practices, values and priorities. The study, based on the author’s fieldwork materials from 1990—2024, as well as archival data (primarily analysis of ethnological and folklore sources), allows us to conclude that the Albanians, despite the spread of Islam, which prohibited alcoholic drinks, starting from the 14th century, and a long period of monism (1944 — early 1990s), which pursued private initiative and almost any agricultural work outside the cooperative, preserved the production of rakia and the tradition of its consumption as an indispensable condition for maintaining the family economy and budget, food culture and consumption standards, leisure time and preserving social ties.

Philosophical conceptions and theoretical foundations of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history forming

S. Aytov

The article analyzes the impact of methodological approaches of philosophical thought on the formation of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history. The methodology of this work is based on the principles of complementarity, structure, and dialogue. In the study of labor problems, methods were involved: philosophical hermeneutics, systemic- structural, interdisciplinary. Historical anthropology as a version of the philosophy of history, which explores the mental- cultural plane of causes, the essence of historical processes and their possible projection into the future, has a significant potential for understanding the global social- cultural dynamics in past eras through philosophical- historical concepts. An important condition for the implementation of this scientific task is the analysis of the formation of the theoretical foundations of historical- anthropological dimensions of philosophical- historical thought. The study of the specified problem field is based on the study of the philosophical theories of R. G. Collingwood, K. Lévi- Strauss, and M. Foucault. The main ideas of R. G. Collingwood, which are important for the formation of the concepts of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history, include the understanding of the philosophical potential of historical thought; the need to combine philosophical concepts and historical methodologies; the importance of understanding the mental and cultural horizon of the past through the philosophy of history. Among the factors influencing the structuralist concepts of K. Lévi- Strauss on the formation of the theoretical foundations of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history, it is possible to single out the analysis of mythological elements of perception of the world by proto- societies; identification and studies of unconscious components of psychology and culture of societies of the specified type, implementation of scientific interactions of historical knowledge and ethnology. Important concepts of M. Foucault, which influenced the formation of theoretical approaches of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history, includes the analysis of unconscious elements of the psyche of societies in different eras of the past; understanding the phenomenon of «otherness» in history; study of mental representations in European society about mental illnesses; research on the understanding of the phenomenon of madness in Western European art; studies of the mentality of doctors in the Early Modern Time. The theoretical foundations of historical anthropology as a modern philosophy of history, which were formed under the influence of philosophical concepts, include the ontological, epistemological and axiological planes. The ontological plane is manifested in the formation of the problem field of historical- anthropological studies, the mental- cultural horizon of the past. Its composition includes: analysis of the subconscious foundations of psychology and mythological systems of proto- societies and early- historian societies; understanding the communities’ perception of the specified types of various socio- cultural phenomena, in particular diseases and means of treatment; the attitude of societies to certain social groups, in particular to doctors; analysis of the perception of political power and the mechanisms of formation of its social- psychological foundations. The epistemological plane is revealed in the formation of historical- anthropological concepts of methods of analysis of deep, unconscious aspects of the psychological and cultural dimension of past eras; effective application of an interdisciplinary approach in the analysis of mental phenomena and social behavior; realization of cognitive interaction of methodological approaches of ethnology and historical anthropology. The axiological plane consists in stimulating the spread in the understanding of the mental- cultural horizon of historical processes of the values of humanism, pluralism and the equality of cultures and civilizations of the past and the present; dialogue of various cultures, worldview systems and intellectual traditions.

Women's Activities and the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Gorani Community

Jadranka Đorđević Crnobrnja

Research endeavors within the domain of intangible cultural heritage, conducted within the Gorani community, highlight, among various aspects, the involvement of women in creating and transmitting knowledge and skills, which are perceived by the Gorani populace as a particularly important component of the Gorani tradition. Women are ascribed a key role in preserving Gorani cultural heritage. This study examines the activities of women in the Gorani community within the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage framework. The research is focused on knowledge, skills, and practices carried out by women, which unfold continually within the Gorani community during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It primarily concerns the knowledge and skills of women manifested through the tradition of designing and wearing clothing items, especially those pieces that have become over time an indispensable part of women's ceremonial attire. The empirical data also encourages an examination of the role of women in shaping identity paradigms and symbols in the Gorani community, as well as their expression, transmission, and the assurance of the continuity of these practices. The analysis of women’s contribution to safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage of the Gorani community indicates that the preservation and protection of Gorani tradition, as understood and recognized by the participants in accordance with the UNESCO Convention defining heritage, are conditioned by the social, economic, and political circumstances shaping daily activities and everyday lives of the people in Gora, both within and beyond their native local environment. It is also obvious that Gorani’s interest in their own intangible cultural heritage is unmistakable, as demonstrated by social and cultural practices that would be impracticable without the existence of this heritage. The Gorani people's aspiration to safeguard their own cultural heritage is viewed in the context of its contribution to the preservation and continuity of the Gorani identity, namely the identity of the Gorani community, which holds minority status in the Republic of Serbia.

The Travesti (Travesti (Transvestite)) Body in the Anthropocene: Cultural Intersections

Joao Dantas dos Anjos Neto

When we consider it as a cultural element, the body assumes a myriad of new social and political meanings in contemporary times. The progressive destruction of the planet, the deep inequalities and the complex class relations are inscribed in the body, by the body and with the body. We see these intersections in an especially relevant way when we consider the existence of travesti (Travesti (Transvestite)) s, people aligned with the feminine whose body exists at the border of the cultural constructions of sex and gender, and more specifically travesti (Transvestite) sex workers in Brazil. It is intended to theoretically elaborate some of the ramifications of this chaotic scenario and its links with the cultural production of the body, with emphasis on the travesti (Transvestite) body. For this, we will articulate the cyborg theory, by Haraway (2009); of rubble and contamination, by Tsing (2019) and the ethnography of Anjos Neto (2019).

The Power of Nursing Innovation in Planetary Health

Kasey Bellegarde, Linda Koh, Carol Ziegler et al.

We live and work in a time of unprecedented disruptions to our planet’s natural systems. Nurses, as frontline workers and stewards of health, care for the health consequences of these environmental changes in emergency rooms, clinics, and homes around the world. The nursing workforce is well-positioned to act as a critical early warning system for detecting and forecasting threats to human and planetary health, and to lead in aligning health and planet co-benefits in research, education, policy, and practice. To respond to these threats, nurses are reimagining roles in which they shepherd the transformative shift in the ways we live with the planet to restore health and balance for all species. With their instincts for creative problem solving and complex systems thinking, as well as their proximity to patients’ needs and experiences, nurses are natural innovators and trusted partners in healing. For nurses, the grand innovation challenge of planetary health means taking on the planet as our patient, with more opportunities to partner at scale to achieve better health outcomes. Planetary and global health has been identified as a key area of nursing innovation by the American Nurses Association (ANA), one of the United States’ leading national nursing organizations. This article provides a primer on how nurses are using collaborative partnerships and innovations in planetary health. It highlights the work of the ANA Innovation Advisory Committee on Planetary and Global Health as well as nurse leaders advancing planetary health from the community to the global level. Contributing authors explore the space between planetary health, nursing innovation, and partnership, illustrating how nurses are leading work to redesign and amplify their roles in caring for both people and the planet.

Antropolodzy wobec niespokojnych krajobrazów współczesnego świata w kontekście Cool Anthropology

Natalia Maksymowicz-Mróz

The article is a reflection on the place, tasks and purpose of cultural anthropology in the contemporary world. It was inspired by a discussion that took place during Ethnology Without Borders 2022 Conference. The 21st century shook the foundations of anthropology’s relationship with politics and society: from the devastating pandemic and the increasing effects of climate change, to the outbreak of war in Europe. The author ponders how anthropology should operate in the face of these crises. The presentation of various research concepts aims to bring closer where the problem is while everyone means well. The article presents the achievements of some anthropologists who criticize actions based on good intentions and draws attention to the achievements of Anthropology of Development, which the author illustrates with some examples from her own observations made during field research in Nepal and NATO training. The Cool Anthropology trend is potentially a right direction for development of contemporary anthropology. The questions posed in the article are intended to provoke reflection on the author’s thesis that as anthropologists who are part of a privileged social layer, should ask themselves the question: how to reconceptualize anthropological activities outside the resources of the academic spheres in order to become socially useful.

The economic anthropology: theory and terminology issues

A. Bababekov

The intensive course of socio-economic progress on a planetary scale makes it possible to strengthen the integration process in the economic and economic activities of the peoples of the world. The preservation of characteristic local ethno-economic structures and economic and cultural traditions, as well as their use, are becoming important in the implementation of national goals and objectives for the stable development of countries as a solution to problems related to food security, unemployment, real incomes of the population and the environment. In a number of leading research centers of the world, priority is given to the study of economic life, the traditions of creating material wealth inherent in various social, national-ethnic and agrarian-economic societies. They pay special attention to the theoretical and practical problems of economic anthropology, concerning such topics as socio-economic, cultural diversity, ethno-economic structure of peoples living in a certain natural and geographical environment. In this article “Theoretical problems of ethno-economics”, special attention is paid to the scientific characterization of ethno-economics as a new concept in ethnology and economics, as well as to the analysis of theoretical problems, the concepts of marginalism, formalism, substantivism, which the term regard to share public wealth, and production equally to every member of society, and institutional theory.

Anthropology and ethnic studies, Iran

S. Shahshahani

For writing this invited paper, I was given the title Ethnic Groups of Iran and I was also asked to inform the reader/audience about the general situation of anthropology in the country. Specific questions were asked and the first part of this paper responds to those questions. The second part can be best understood if at the time of the reading reference could be made to the site mentioned in the article. A few articles and one book have discussed the history of the field of anthropology in Iran and they are discussed in this text. This field has had great difficulty trying to establish itself in the country due to the sensitivity of the political machine of the country which at times it did not really understand its topic, and at others was sensitive to the information it could bring from rural and pastoral areas of Iran to the center and critically consider the activities of the government. Transparency of political activities have always been at odds with social sciences, and this can clearly be seen in the problems anthropology has had to face to establish itself. The very name of the field has been problematic and this also shows the lack of discussion of the erudite of the field in a clear manner. Today this field is dispersed in various faculties of different universities and topics. The second part of this paper concentrates on my own work on the ethnic groups of country, and a map and a site which I have made to represent the active cultural life of all different peoples of Iran. My anthropological knowledge has helped me to divide the work according first to subsistence (pastoral nomadic, rural and urban), and then according to cultural characteristics and my hope is to continue this work which has been a very important lack in Human Relations Area Files. So far I only have some titles in English, its translation into English could disseminate the information to the anthropological scientific world.

The development, paradigm and academic values of enterprise anthropology—the “fourth revolution” of anthropology

Zhuo Wang

AbstractAs an emerging interdisciplinary field in anthropology, enterprise anthropology (EA) has experienced five historical stages of development since its inception in the 1930s. 2008 marked the first year of internationalized enterprise anthropology, thus prompting the “fourth revolution” of anthropology. Since then, the sub-discipline of enterprise anthropology has entered its fifth stage of development. This stage of enterprise anthropology has witnessed new research subjects, concepts, and theories. Breakthroughs have been made in theoretical research and methodological innovation, and a unique paradigm has been established. In terms of discipline and era, the fifth stage is characterized by: innovative transformation and creative development, integration of Chinese and Western channels for anthropology research, building of international academic networks, and the practice of “people-centered” research. As a result, this stage of enterprise anthropology holds profound theoretical and practical significance for interdisciplinary and academic equity, new ideas and methods for studying the transformation of Chinese society, and establishment of an internationalized research paradigm for the Chinese academic community.

Im/migration: Family Strategies and Access to Rights

Catherine Delcroix, Josiane Le Gall, Elise Pape

Objectives: The aim of this issue of the journal is to study the way in which "making a family" influences access to rights and the integration of migrant families in Europe (France, Germany), North America (Quebec) and Djibouti, from Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, Mozambique or Brazil. Similarly, and reciprocally, he is interested in the impact of law on family experiences in a migratory context.Methodology: The ethnographic observation approach, through the cross-referenced collection of life stories and the reconstruction of the life contexts of these migrants (while respecting their words and their anonymity) makes it possible to discover, sometimes in a counter-intuitive way, the effects of the policies on their lives. Results: It often happens that within the same migrant family the legal status of its members is different, and therefore their rights to be regularised or not. As a result, these families - and more broadly, entire groups of migrants - have to carry out important work in terms of information for access to residence rights, work, access to schooling for their children, health, nationality, etc. Nothing is guaranteed a priori. Conclusion: We can imagine how much migration will continue in the face of climate change and political unrest throughout history. It is likely that a policy evaluation approach, or lack thereof, by those affected, will be increasingly necessary in the future.Contribution: This thematic issue of the journal Enfances Familles Générations highlights, from a historical and comparative approach, the impact of the legitimacy of being part of the national community to which these men and women have migrated (Destremau, 2022).
