Military and Martial Thematics on the Pages of “Folk Art and Ethnology” Journal: Historiography, Subject Matter, Trends of Comprehension

The article is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of the representation of military and martial thematics on the pages of the «Folk Art and Ethnology» journal in various historical periods. Having based on a wide range of published works, the evolution of scientific approaches is traced – from the ideologically limited Soviet interpretation of military events to the modern interdisciplinary anthropological reading of the phenomena of war. The content of early materials those have reflected the Soviet heroic model and contributed to the formation of the official military narrative is revealed. It is shown that after Ukraine gained independence, the journal has been consistently reoriented towards understanding the war experience in the light of national historical memory, ethnocultural specificity, and rethinking the traumatic events of the 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of research strategies after 2014 and, especially, after the full-scale Russian invasion of 2022, when field research, the collection of oral testimonies, the analysis of the everyday life of military and civilians, social practices of resistance, new forms of rituality, and local manifestations of military culture start to be of a leading importance. It has been found that the journal is becoming a key platform for the emergence of a new trend in Ukraine – the ethnology and anthropology of modern warfare. The interdisciplinary nature of contemporary studies, the involvement of foreign authors, and the focus on issues of cultural heritage, demographic change, military images and the transformations of cultural practices in wartime are emphasized.
