Experiences of Emotional Healing After Figurines Intervention in Rural Thai Primary School Children: A Mixed-method Study

Saifon Aekwarangkoon, Linda Oakley

Background: Early emotional difficulties, even when not clinically diagnosed, may affect children’s social and academic development. Emotional healing can enhance children’s emotional awareness and coping skills, potentially preventing future mental health issues. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of emotional healing after figurines intervention in rural Thai primary school children. Methods: This study employed a mixed-method research design, including two parts: first, a pre- and post-test design, and second, a descriptive phenomenological approach. It was conducted from March to May 2025 at a rural primary school in Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. 22 students who met the criteria for mild to moderate depressive symptoms based on the Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQ-A) 9 scores participated in a school-based healing program using miniature figurines; nine of them who completed the program were purposively selected with parental consent to share their experiences through semi-structured individual interviews. Data were thematically analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method, and saturation was reached when no new themes emerged. Results: PHQ-A mean scores for the 22 participants decreased from pre-test (10.05±2.87) to post-test (4.09±1.41), (P=0.01). PHQ-A mean scores for the 9 students in the qualitative study decreased from pre-test (10.78±2.33) to post-test (3.33±0.87), (P=0.08). The qualitative findings were consistent with healing and showed a decrease in PHQ-A scores. The healing stories of 9 Thai school children showed awakening self-awareness, emotional healing, and developing personal growth. Conclusion: The figurine intervention promotes emotional self-exploration, which can increase self-confidence in emotion management and build resilience in Thai school children.

Electroencephalography-based psychological and physiological effects of winter virtual forest trail landscapes on youth

Yan Cai, Qihao Wang, Miao Sun et al.

Abstract In the context of escalating urbanization and modernization, urban residents are facing a progressive rise in stress levels, particularly during winter when severe cold and limited daylight hours intensify psychological strain and physical fatigue. Despite the acknowledged health benefits of brief exposure to natural settings, research on the restorative effects of virtual winter forest settings remains limited. This study undertook the creation of immersive winter forest trail landscapes using virtual technology, generating six distinct audiovisual configurations by manipulating variables such as Evergreen Tree Density (ETD) and Event Ambient Sound (EAS). A cohort of 132 participants (N = 22) engaged in a stress-induction experiment involving a 5-minute virtual landscape exploration within indoor settings. Psychological metrics were assessed through the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Perceived Restored Soundscape Scale (PRSS), while changes in brain alpha and beta waves and neuroemotional indicators were monitored via Emotiv EPOC X during the participants’ virtual experience. The impact of the virtual winter forest trail landscape on participants’ psychological and physiological perceptions was analyzed. Findings revealed that: (1) the virtual winter forest trail contributed to heightened positive emotions (p = 0.001); (2) diverse audiovisual configurations positively influenced audiovisual nerve relaxation, as evidenced by EEG data, albeit with varying degrees of efficacy; (3) winter forest trail environments characterized by high green visibility significantly facilitate the physical and mental recovery of visitors; (4) multi-person activity sounds outperformed single-player audio in terms of restorative benefits, while companionship enhances the healing process; and (5) interactions involving multiple people and sound production significantly enhanced recovery benefits (p = 0.000) in a forested trail environment dense with evergreens during winter. In contrast, the lowest recovery benefits were observed when individuals strolled alone. This research offers a theoretical foundation for the advancement and implementation of winter forest landscape therapy and serves as a scholarly reference for leveraging snow and ice tourism resources in forest environments.

Engaging husbands in a digital mental health intervention to provide tailored counseling for women experiencing postpartum depression: A mixed methods study in Nepal

Anvita Bhardwaj, Sujen Man Maharjan, Alka Jarga Magar et al.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common experience among mothers worldwide. Family members, especially husbands, can play an integral role in supporting and helping mothers recover from PPD. However, husbands are typically not included in interventions to address postpartum depression among women. This study explored husbands’ perspectives on engaging in a counseling intervention augmented with a digital health component for the treatment of PPD. Methods: A convergent mixed methods design was used to evaluate husbands’ attitudes and involvement in a counseling and digital intervention for mothers in a semi-urban region of Nepal.Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews was used to derive emergent themes. A joint display examined differences in themes for husbands whose wives experienced a significant decline in PPD symptoms as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 pre and post intervention, as compared to husbands of women whose symptoms stayed the same or worsened. Results: Thirteen husbands were interviewed. Three primary themes emerged: the impact of gender norms and attitudes on engagement in the intervention, involvement and support in the intervention, and suggestions for future interventions for PPD. Among wives who experienced a reduction in depression symptoms, their husbands were more likely to endorse gender-equitable norms and attitudes and the husbands provided emotional support, as well as participating in household chores and childcare. Conclusion: When husbands are living in the same household, providing support and being involved in their wives’ PPD treatment can help them recover. Husbands describe time at home and work as barriers to being able to help their wives. PPD interventions that involve husbands might need to educate husbands about how they can provide emotional support to their partner.

Internal migration and depressive symptoms: Exploring selection and outcomes in a South African cohort

Carren Ginsburg, Tyler W. Myroniuk, Chantel F. Pheiffer et al.

Introduction: Investigations of migration effects on mental health conditions, including depression are sparse in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), yet mental health may play a role in a decision to migrate, and migration in turn can impact on mental health outcomes. Methods: This paper uses two waves of data from the Migrant Health Follow-Up Study, a young adult cohort of 2967 internal migrants and residents of the Agincourt study site in rural northeast South Africa to explore the relationship between internal migration and depressive symptoms, as measured on the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale. We employ logistic regression analysis to investigate selectivity of migrants in relation to depressive symptoms, and we fit generalized linear models to analyse depressive symptoms (CES-D scores) as a function of migration status and sociodemographic and health characteristics, accounting for temporal sequence. Results: Although we observe systematically low reporting of depressive symptoms, average CES-D scores are lower among migrants (comprising approximately 53% of the cohort) compared to Agincourt residents at both survey timepoints. We do not find evidence of a selection effect in relation to mental health among those newly migrating between Wave 2 and 3 (n = 1393). In analyses of the CES-D score outcome, the significant influence of migration status on depressive symptoms is reduced with the inclusion of controls in the models. Consistent employment and higher levels of education are associated with lower CES-D scores, while diagnosis of a chronic condition is associated with higher scores. Conclusion: The relationship between migration and depressive symptoms is influenced by factors preceding a migration and destination-place characteristics and experiences. Further examination of the role of migration at different stages of the process, along with continuing attention to psychosocial measurement considerations for LMIC subpopulations, can improve our understanding of these complex interrelationships and contribute to evidence.

Ketenangan Hati Perspektif Tafsir Fi Dzilalil Quran (Kajian Mental Health dalam Alquran)

Dhur Anni, Muhammad Yuchbibun Nury

Commercial Video Games As Therapy: A New Research Agenda to Unlock the Potential of a Global Pastime

Michelle Colder Carras, Antonius J. van Rooij, D. Spruijt-Metz et al.

Emerging research suggests that commercial, off-the-shelf video games have potential applications in preventive and therapeutic medicine. Despite these promising findings, systematic efforts to characterize and better understand this potential have not been undertaken. Serious academic study of the therapeutic potential of commercial video games faces several challenges, including a lack of standard terminology, rapidly changing technology, societal attitudes toward video games, and understanding and accounting for complex interactions between individual, social, and cultural health determinants. As a vehicle to launch a new interdisciplinary research agenda, the present paper provides background information on the use of commercial video games for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental and other health conditions, and discusses ongoing grassroots efforts by online communities to use video games for healing and recovery.

Stockpile purchasing in the emerging COVID-19 pandemic is related to obsessive-compulsiveness

Florian Schiller, Katharina Bey, Leonhard Grabe et al.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic people started stocking up on daily necessities although no long-term shortage thereof could be expected. Among other variables such as perceived and desired control, experienced scarcity, and psychopathy, obsessive-compulsiveness has been proposed as plausible explanation for this seemingly irrational behavior. Methods: We collected data of 1379 participants in an online survey. Buying behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic was measured with the Hamsterkauf Questionnaire (HQ), which was specifically developed for this purpose. As independent variables, we measured participants’ obsessive-compulsiveness on the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) and potential fears of incapacitation and destabilization it might fuel. We also determined the extent to which participants experienced scarcity, exhibited psychopathic traits, felt in control of the situation and desired control in general. Results: The average DOCS score was found to be strongly elevated. Higher obsessive-compulsiveness was associated with stronger stockpile purchasing behavior. This association was partly mediated by fears of incapacitation and destabilization. Obsessive-compulsiveness was predicted by experienced scarcity and psychopathic personality traits. By contrast, desirability of control and perceived control were not significantly associated with obsessive-compulsiveness or panic buying behavior. Limitations: Survey data were collected in form of a convenience sample at one measurement point. Conclusions: The widespread stockpile purchasing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic can partly be understood as safety behavior to reduce fears related to strongly elevated levels of obsessive-compulsiveness. In turn, elevated levels of obsessive-compulsiveness were partly accounted for by personality factors such a psychopathy and situational stress factors such as scarcity.

Cognitive, mental and social benefits of interacting with nature: A systematic review

Emine Zehra Kasap, Feyza Ağzıtemiz, Gülten Ünal

Nature experiences have a positive effect on mental health, especially on psychological well-being because nature is perceived as a supportive, peaceful environment, and an emotional sanctuary. This paper aims to review and document a broad range of empirical evidence regarding the benefits of the experience of nature from cognitive, clinical, and social dimensions separately. The findings investigating the social aspects of interacting with nature point out the connective feature of natural entities through revealing hedonic and self-transcendent feelings and modifying the self-other perception (e.g., self-diminishment) in favor of facilitating social value orientation and oneness among human beings. Having contact with nature also extends cognitive abilities by replenishing attention, memory, executive functioning, and learning capacities, and bolstering creative potential. The experience of nature has uplifting benefits on positive mood, empowers psychological well-being, recovery, and relaxation via mitigating stress and anxiety levels. Socially, contact with nature elicits social cohesiveness through facilitating social value orientation, perspective-taking, and helping behavior. Improving well-being via nature connectedness may be effective in decreasing psychological symptoms such as stress, negative mood states, and expectedly mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. The several ways of how nature contributes to individual and societal well-being are discussed in the light of the literature.

Epilepsy and Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Biological Perspective

Jayasankara Reddy, Adithya Ramesh

Childhood epilepsy represents a complex group of seizure disorders with neuropsychological Childhood epilepsy represents a complex group of seizure disorders with neuropsychological deficits and diverse outcomes during developmental stages and later in life. Epilepsy can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study based on review of literature, the association of etiologically diagnosed childhood epilepsy with the subsequent risks of neurodevelopmental disorders. Papers for this review were selected from established databases like PubMed, Proquest, and ScienceDirect among many. It has shown high comorbidity between epilepsy and intellectual deficits. However, it merely hints at common neurological mechanisms and does not adequately imply causation. Medications for treating epilepsy in children are also implicated in the development of neurodevelopmental disorders later in life. These claims are also explored in the review. There may be common mechanisms between epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders, which has to be further explored to develop causal factors. There is not much literature on the neurodevelopmental effects of antiepileptic drugs in the postnatal phase.

Defining “High-risk Sexual Behavior” in the Context of Substance Use

Nishtha Chawla, Siddharth Sarkar

Abstract Introduction: Sexual behavior is a behavior exhibited by individuals to gratify one of their basic needs, that is the sexual need. Often the way in which sexual behavior is practiced may lead to negative consequences. However, the definition of a sexual behavior as risky varies with regards to culture, gender, age, and the threshold. Objectives: This review aims to study different definitions of high-risk sexual behavior available in literature, the differences in the prevalence of various risks associated with risky sex in substance-using population as compared to general population, and eventually formulating a tentative definition of “high-risk sexual behavior” in the context of substance use. Current evidence and results of literature search as we have entered into the epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus globally, it is important clinically as well as from the public health perspective to define high-risk sexual behavior discretely helping the researchers quantify the burden and the clinicians focus on the population at risk. High-risk sexual behavior has often been discussed and studied in various studies till date. However, literature lacks a discrete definition of high-risk sexual behavior. Risky sex (or high-risk sexual behavior) has been variably defined in different studies. Majority of the definitions in the studies focus on sexually transmitted infection, especially human immunodeficiency virus. A few studies talk about unintended pregnancies or abortions. Conclusion: The association between high-risk sexual behavior and substance use has been well established. Further research is warranted to obtain a definition which has greater precision and clinical utility, and which can be integrated in preventive and promotive pursuits.

Distance education in neonatal nursing scenarios: a systematic review

Laís Machado Freire, Mariane Andreza de Paula, Elysangela Dittz Duarte et al.

OBJECTIVE Identify resources that support learning mediated by technology in the field of neonatal nursing. METHOD Systematic review with searches conducted in MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO. Titles and abstracts were independently evaluated by two experts. RESULTS Of the 2,051 references, 203 full-text articles were analyzed, resulting in the inclusion of nine studies on semiotics and semiology, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, general aspects of neonatal care, diagnostic reasoning and assessment of pain. Only two articles addressed the development of educational strategies and seven papers described the assessment of these strategies by experts and/or users. CONCLUSION Distance education is an important resource for education, and its improvement and updating, and it particularly adds advantages for neonatal nursing by approximating teaching and real-life situations and by minimizing the exposure of newborns for teaching purposes. The lack of educational initiatives mediated by technology suggests the need for the development, evaluation and dissemination of educational resources focused on nursing care of newborns and their families.
