While the Homeric epics primarily focus on the Greek and Trojan heroes battling outside Troy’s walls, they also hark back to earlier heroic eras. Among past heroes, Herakles is the most frequently mentioned. The Iliad often references Herakles’ exploits, but the Odyssey only briefly evokes him in a few verses. The most extended mention occurs in the nekyia (Od. 11. 601-627), a passage presenting oddities that have been widely debated and interpreted. This paper considers the passage focusing on the diffuse confusion of temporal levels that it presents in the light of frameworks related to mind and consciousness. Inspired by the seminal works of Snell and Dodds and the controversial yet increasingly validated theories of Jaynes, supported by neuroscientific insights and Damasio’s endorsement, it explores recent research on consciousness in perceiving and describing time. It investigates whether this Homeric passage may reflect a transitional phase from one stage of development of the human cognitive system to a subsequent one characterised by different functional traits.

In this paper we develop a classification of real functions based on growth rates of repeated iteration. We show how functions are naturally distinguishable when considering inverses of repeated iterations. For example, $n+2\to 2n\to 2^n\to 2^{\cdot^{\cdot^2}}$ ($n$-times) etc. and their inverse functions $x-2, x/2, \log x/\log 2,$ etc. Based on this idea and some regularity conditions we define classes of functions, with $x+2$, $2x$, $2^x$ in the first three classes. We prove various properties of these classes which reveal their nature, including a `uniqueness' property. We exhibit examples of functions lying between consecutive classes and indicate how this implies these gaps are very `large'. Indeed, we suspect the existence of a continuum of such classes.
Memristor has been identified as the fourth fundamental circuit element by Dr. Leon Chua in 1971 and since then it has gathered a lot of interest because of its non-volatility and are considered as a viable solution to the beyond CMOS era computation. Recently, memristor have been used to perform basic logic operations like AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR etc. and are also used in applications like Dot Product Engine, Convolution Neural Networks etc. This paper presents a new behavioural model of memristor then using it to build a 32-bit ripple carry adder. The paper later compares the area, power and time delay of the 32 bit Ripple Carry Adder using memristor with the 45nm CMOS technology and highlights its advantages and pitfalls.
In this work, we propose an end-to-end Thrust Microstepping and Decoupled Control (TMDC) of quadrotors. TMDC focuses on precise off-centered aerial grasping of payloads dynamically, which are attached rigidly to the UAV body via a gripper contrary to the swinging payload. The dynamic payload grasping quickly changes UAV's mass, inertia etc, causing instability while performing a grasping operation in-air. We identify that to handle unknown payload grasping, the role of thrust controller is crucial. Hence, we focus on thrust control without involving system parameters such as mass etc. TMDC is based on our novel Thrust Microstepping via Acceleration Feedback (TMAF) thrust controller and Decoupled Motion Control (DMC). TMAF precisely estimates the desired thrust even at smaller loop rates while DMC decouples the horizontal and vertical motion to counteract disturbances in the case of dynamic payloads. We prove the controller's efficacy via exhaustive experiments in practically interesting and adverse real-world cases, such as fully onboard state estimation without any positioning sensor, narrow and indoor flying workspaces with intense wind turbulence, heavy payloads, non-uniform loop rates, etc. Our TMDC outperforms recent direct acceleration feedback thrust controller (DA) and geometric tracking control (GT) in flying stably for aerial grasping and achieves RMSE below 0.04m in contrast to 0.15m of DA and 0.16m of GT.
Many of Levi’s speculative stories narrate dystopian scenarios in which individuals express anxiety about the creeping power of technology which is reifying and automating their posthuman bodies, affecting their physical and psychological freedoms. This article develops previous scholarship with a specific focus on the gendered dimension of Levi’s writing. I show how he critiques the problematic ways in which technologisation impacts specifically on women’s bodies. With a view to tracing the contemporary echoes of Levi’s work, I place his stories in dialogue with Nicoletta Vallorani’s recent, more explicitly feminist novels. I argue that Vallorani’s writing echoes and develops many of Levi’s concerns about how technology can be employed to constrain our bodies and consciousness, and the explicitly gendered dimensions of this oppression. A critical reading of these texts alongside one another reveals striking resonances and confirms how Levi’s intuitions regarding the importance of critiquing unfettered technologised embodiment remain urgently relevant today.

In cybersecurity courses, it is quite challenging to do hands-on activities that involve many components of the Internet, such as bringing down the Internet, attacking a blockchain, etc. To solve this problem, we have developed an open-source Internet Emulator, which is a Python library, consisting of the classes for each essential element of the Internet, including autonomous system, network, host, router, BGP router, Internet exchange, etc. It also includes the classes for a variety of services, including Web server, DNS, Botnet, Darknet, Blockchain, and more are being developed. Using these classes, users can construct a mini-Internet to emulate the real-world Internet. Although it is small, it has all the essential elements of the real Internet. The construction is compiled into Docker container files, and the emulation is executed by Docker on a single machine, or on multiple cloud machines. With this Internet Emulator, we can develop a variety of hands-on activities for cybersecurity courses, including BGP prefix hijacking, attacks on smart contract, using Darknet to achieve anonymity, launching Botnet and ransomware attacks, etc. While the emulator was initially developed for cybersecurity courses, it can also be used for network courses, for students to learn how the Internet technologies work, such as routing, BGP, IP Anycast, and DNS. Many other interesting network technologies can also be deployed on the emulator, such as content delivery network and software-defined network.

An increasing body of work has recognized the importance of exploiting machine learning (ML) advancements to address the need for efficient automation in extracting access control attributes, policy mining, policy verification, access decisions, etc. In this work, we survey and summarize various ML approaches to solve different access control problems. We propose a novel taxonomy of the ML model's application in the access control domain. We highlight current limitations and open challenges such as lack of public real-world datasets, administration of ML-based access control systems, understanding a black-box ML model's decision, etc., and enumerate future research directions.

Products in an ecommerce catalog contain information-rich fields like description and bullets that can be useful to extract entities (attributes) using NER based systems. However, these fields are often verbose and contain lot of information that is not relevant from a search perspective. Treating each sentence within these fields equally can lead to poor full text match and introduce problems in extracting attributes to develop ontologies, semantic search etc. To address this issue, we describe two methods based on extractive summarization with reinforcement learning by leveraging information in product titles and search click through logs to rank sentences from bullets, description, etc. Finally, we compare the accuracy of these two models.

Twinkling Artifact is a valuable tool in detecting dense objects such as kidney stones, calculi etc., especially when there is no acoustic shadowing and presence of hyperechogenic tissues obstructs visualization. This phenomenon is not completely understood. Different scientific groups have contradictory findings concerning its properties: some of them observed a decrease in Twinkling intensity at elevated pulse repetition frequencies (PRF), while others found Twinkling to be independent from PRF, etc. In this paper we hypothesize that this kind of contradictions can be partially resolved on an assumption that there are two types of Twinkling. The 1st type presumably is produced by random-phased reflections from microcavitation and can be registered even at PRF high enough to suppress blood flow. The 2nd is originated from elastic vibrations as the object under investigation swings like a pendulum in the field of ultrasound. These vibrations can be associated with an external source such as a muscles contraction, etc. or the acoustic radiation force from signals emitted by the transducer. The 2nd type of Twinkling disappears at high PRF and can be regularly observed in silicone and polyurethane phantoms where the occurrence of cavitation microbubbles is highly unlikely. Key Words: Ultrasound Imaging, Twinkling Artifact, Stone Detection, Doppler Effect, Color Frame Mapping, Acoustic Radiation Force, Elastic Vibration, Ultrasound Phantom, Cavitation, Microbubbles.
Although it dwelt for a long time in the shadows, today La Regenta(1884-85) by Leopoldo Alas ‘Clarín’ is considered a masterpiece among late-nineteenth-century Spanish novels. Its recognition as a modern classic, though still “limited,” began in the Fifties of the twentieth century and has not stopped since. La Regenta’s significance for the contemporary period is demonstrated by its many rewritings. This paper provides a review of these before analyzing in greater detail its adaptation as a graphic novel (1999-2001) by Isaac del Rivero, as well as the presence on the internet of websites devoted to the novel and its author.

The main purpose of this essay is to reconsider the problematic issue of narrativity in Giorgio Manganelli’s earliest fictional works: Hilarotragoediaand Nuovo commento. The first paragraph debates the classic definition of Manganelli as an antinarrative writer and reexamines the main positions of the author against the novel and around the concept of narration in general. The second paragraph provides an interpretation of Manganelli’s fictional treatises through Harald Weinrich’s theory as outlined in Tempus. Besprochene und erzählte Welt. The last paragraph tries to draw some conclusions from the application of Weinrich’s theory to this context and focuses on Manganelli’s dynamic use of ecphrasis as a hidden strategy of narration.
