Mapping of geographic inequality in mental health care facilities and psychiatrists distribution across seven districts of indore division: A geospatial analysis from central India

Vijay Niranjan, Ashvin Chouhan, Ankit Kushwaha et al.

Background: India faces a severe mental health workforce shortage, with Madhya Pradesh (MP) having only 0.05 psychiatrists per 100,000 population—far below the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark of 3. Granular data on psychiatrist distribution are needed to address inequities in care. Aim: To map psychiatrist distribution across the seven districts of Indore division, MP, to assess geographic inequalities and estimate resource requirements for achieving WHO staffing norms. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional geospatial survey (Jan–Mar 2025) identified actively practicing psychiatrists via snowball sampling, global positioning system (GPS)mapping, and inequality indices (Gini, Theil). Spatial clustering was analyzed using the nearest-neighbor index (NNI). Regression models assessed infrastructure-psychiatrist associations. Results: Among 71 psychiatrists, 88% clustered in Indore city, yielding a regional density of 0.54 per 100,000. Three districts had no psychiatrists. High inequality (Gini = 0.78) and urban clustering (NNI = 0.38) were observed. Infrastructure availability strongly predicted psychiatrist presence (β =0.98). Meeting WHO targets requires 429 additional psychiatrists (annual investment: INR 514.8 million). Conclusion: Severe urban–rural disparities exist in psychiatrist distribution. Targeted investments in workforce expansion, telepsychiatry (e.g. Tele-MANAS), and rural infrastructure are urgently needed to bridge the treatment gap.

The practicality of long-term blended teaching and learning at a South African institution

Musawenkosi D. Saurombe, Kamogelo D. Malebe, Marcia Nyandeni et al.

Background: The rapid revolutionisation of technology and other factors such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, prompted higher education institutions to consider the possibility, necessity and implications of officially adopting a blended teaching and learning approach on a long-term basis. Aim: This research aimed to explore the practicality of a long-term blended teaching and learning model at a South African higher education institution. Setting: This research was conducted at a selected South African higher education institution. Methods: The article adopted a qualitative case study approach, and one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data collected was then analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Although the institution was generally ready for blended teaching and learning during the pandemic, best practices such as further training and development for both lecturers and students on the pertinent systems and technology are imperative if a long-term blended teaching and learning is to be successful. There were also concerns regarding external, technological, and socio-economic issues that could hinder a successful long-term blended model. Conclusion: While the research revealed the institution’s overall ability to swiftly transition from face-to-face, to distance online and blended teaching and learning approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic, it also revealed that work still had to be done to fully prepare the institution for formalised blended teaching and learning in the future. Contribution: This research builds on limited research on blended teaching and learning at South African contact higher education institutions and adds new theory regarding some best practices for successful blended teaching and learning.

The Evolution of Polarization in Online Conversation: Twitter Users’ Opinions about the COVID-19 Pandemic Become More Politicized over Time

Weize Zhao, Lukasz Walasek, Gordon D. A. Brown

Political polarization on social media has been extensively studied. However, most research has examined polarization about topics that have preexisting associations with ideology, while few studies have tracked the onset of polarization about novel topics or the evolution of polarization over a prolonged period. The occurrence of COVID-19 provides a unique opportunity to study whether social media discourse about a novel event becomes increasingly polarized along ideological lines over time. This paper analyzes trends in Twitter polarization in relation to COVID-19 and other geopolitical events of 2020. The first two studies use topic analysis to examine the evolving difference over time in discussions of COVID-19 and other topics by liberals and conservatives on social media. COVID-19-related polarization is initially absent but gradually increases over time, in contrast to polarization related to other events. A third study examines structural polarization in retweet networks and finds that the frequency of counterpartisan retweets reduces over time. Across all three studies, we find evidence that Twitter discussion of COVID-19 has become more polarized over time.

COVID-19 associated psychosis

Antonino Messina, Maria Salvina Signorelli

Since the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic was declared, cases of psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized behavior have been reported worldwide, both during the acute phase of COVID-19 and after recovery. Given the recent emergence of COVID-19, data are still accumulating, and it is premature to correlate COVID-19 with psychotic disorders causally. However, SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and penetrate neurons. This finding and the amount of published work on COVID-19 and psychotic disorders compel special attention to elucidate the link between SARS-CoV-2 and the occurrence of psychotic symptoms. In this article, several reviews and case reports that have analyzed the link between COVID-19 and psychotic disorders are reviewed. In light of the data that have emerged at the present time, study criteria were proposed to identify COVID-19-related psychosis.

Role of Culture Shock as a Mediator of Relationship between Achiever and Challenger Personality to Sojourner Adjustment

Ujam Jaenudin, Irfan Fahmi, Tahrir et al.

Students who continue their education abroad will be vulnerable to stress and other adaptation problems. Success in overcoming new pressures and situations, one of which is determined by the personality characteristics of each person. This research aims to determine the role of culture shock as a mediator of the relationship between the personality of the achiever and the challenger to the sojourner adjustment. Causality quantitative research design is used to answer this goal by involving research respondents, namely Pattani students who are Muslim and are studying in the city of Bandung. Saturated sampling technique was used to obtain the characteristics of the sample in the research so that as many as 225 respondents were involved in filling out the research questionnaire. Generational differences in psychological ownership

Chantal Olckers, Corné Booysen

Orientation: Several generational groups are employed in the workplace today, each with distinctly different attitudes, values and work behaviours. Little is known about how generational cohorts differ in terms of psychological ownership. Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the measurement equivalence of the South African Psychological Ownership Questionnaire (SAPOS) across three generational cohorts (Baby Boomers, Generation Xers and Generation Yers). Motivation for the study: Before meaningful inferences and comparisons can be made about psychological ownership across the generational cohorts, it is essential to ensure that the psychological ownership scale measures the same trait across all three generational cohorts. Research approach/design and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 945 skilled respondents employed in various public and private organisations employing a multigroup confirmatory factorial analytical approach. Main findings: The tripartite model of the SAPOS, comprising identity, responsibility and autonomy, was confirmed across the three generational cohort. Measurement invariance was established on configural, metric and scalar level across the three generational cohorts. Practical/managerial implications: The three generational cohorts perceive the items as was measured by the psychological ownership scale in the same way. Meaningful comparisons can thus be made between the groups and organisations can tailor their interventions to enhance the levels of psychological ownership of each of these generational cohorts. Contribution/value-add: This study is one of the first to provide empirical evidence of generational differences in respect of psychological ownership and to evaluate the measurement equivalence of a psychological ownership inventory across generational cohorts.

Education shapes the structure of semantic memory and impacts creative thinking

Solange Denervaud, Alexander P. Christensen, Yoed. N. Kenett et al.

Abstract Education is central to the acquisition of knowledge, such as when children learn new concepts. It is unknown, however, whether educational differences impact not only what concepts children learn, but how those concepts come to be represented in semantic memory—a system that supports higher cognitive functions, such as creative thinking. Here we leverage computational network science tools to study hidden knowledge structures of 67 Swiss schoolchildren from two distinct educational backgrounds—Montessori and traditional, matched on socioeconomic factors and nonverbal intelligence—to examine how educational experience shape semantic memory and creative thinking. We find that children experiencing Montessori education show a more flexible semantic network structure (high connectivity/short paths between concepts, less modularity) alongside higher scores on creative thinking tests. The findings indicate that education impacts how children represent concepts in semantic memory and suggest that different educational experiences can affect higher cognitive functions, including creative thinking.

Concepts of creative leadership of women leaders in 21st century

Claude-Hélène Mayer, Rudolf M. Oosthuizen

This article presents the subjective perspectives of women leaders working in higher education institutions in the 21st century in South Africa. It focuses in particularly on creativity as demonstrated by women leaders working in culturally and gender diverse post-apartheid settings. The aim is to contribute to the discourse on the creativity of women leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds within South Africa higher education institutions by examining how women leaders experience creativity and what creativity means to them from a qualitative perspective. The study reported on assessed the experiences of creativity of 23 women leaders and their views on creativity and creative leadership by means of a research paradigm based on Wilhelm Dilthey’s modern hermeneutics. It used qualitative research methods, such as semi-structured interviews, as well as observations within one selected higher education institution. Data was analysed by means of content analysis. Quality research criteria and ethical considerations were upheld. The findings highlight the creative skills and attitudes of women leaders underlying successful leadership and the types of creative leadership applied. They suggest that women leaders’ creativity manifests in facilitating creativity in higher education institutions by fostering the creativity of others rather than directing their own creative vision through or integrating it in the work of employees. Santrauka Šiame straipsnyje pristatomos subjektyvios moterų lyderių, XXI a. dirbančių aukštojo mokslo institucijose, perspektyvos Pietų Afrikoje. Farida Kurniawati, Sulistami Prihandini

Teachers’ attitude is an important factor that influences the quality of the implementation of inclusive education. The quality of inclusive education is part of the quality of education in general in a country. The quality of education of countries around the world is measured by the United Nations using the Human Development Index and placing countries in the very high, high, medium, and low categories. Systematic review was carried out to  get an idea of the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive education and the factors that influence it in countries based on the HDI category. By using three electronic search engines for academic data, namely EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and Taylor & Francis Online, 18 articles reporting teacher attitudes towards inclusive education in various countries were discussed. The results found that there were no differences in teacher attitudes towards inclusive education between countries with very high and high HDI categories with countries in the moderate HDI category. Knowledge of children with disabilities and teaching experiences of these children is known to influence the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive education in countries with all HDI categories. The support from community, the availability of professional assistance, and the length of the implementation of inclusive education are factors that influence the attitudes of teachers in very high and high HDI categories countries, while the negative perception of disability makes teachers held negative attitudes towards inclusive education. Recommendations for improving the review of this topic are discussed in this study

It occurs when healthcare providers are unable to provide the care that they feel is right or take, what they believe to be, ethically appropriate actions for their patients. Thus, this study aims to examine moral distress among nurses and physicians working in tertiary teaching hospitals in Saudi Arabia, as well as to evaluate the level of association between moral distress and turnover. Methods: This cross-sectional study, which employed an anonymous 21-item Moral Distress Scale, was undertaken at a large medical institution located in different regions of Saudi Arabia. The data were analyzed using bi-variate analyses, and logistic regression. Results: Of the 342 participants, 239 (69.9%) were nurses/staff physicians and 103 (30.1%) were fellows/consultants. Approximately 24.3% of respondents experienced severe moral distress, whereas 75.7% reported mild moral distress. There was no statistically significant difference between men and women in terms of moral distress. Age was found to be a notable factor: moral distress was significantly higher in those younger than 37 years compared to those 37 years and older (P=0.015). Less than half of the participants (137, 42.8%) indicated their willingness to leave their jobs. A significant association was observed between severe moral distress and leaving the career (OR=3.16; P<0.01). Job category was also an important factor: nurses/staff physicians were almost two times more likely (OR =1.95, P=0.038) to leave their positions compared to fellows/consultants. Conclusion: This study revealed that moral distress, which is a serious problem that compromises the well-being of caregivers, was a predictive variable for the intention of healthcare providers to leave their jobs. Therefore, it should be routinely examined, and efficient action plans should be implemented to alleviate its consequences. Keywords: burnout, MDS-R, organizational support, nurses, physicians

Managerial coaching: A formal process or a daily conversation?

Angie Dixey

Research indicates that the frequency and effectiveness of managerial coaching is failing to meet organisational demands. For companies to leverage the potential benefits a coaching based approach can offer, in terms of performance and employee engagement, it is critical to advance our understanding of managerial coaching such that any potential discrepancy is reduced. Using a phenomenological approach, this study explores how six sales managers experience their role of coach. The most significant discovery was that participants are actively coaching, just not necessarily in a way organisations are expecting or potentially measuring. Rather than follow a formalised process, participants prefer a conversational approach, with the activity conceivably going unnoticed.
