The processes of integration are nevertheless different in every European country. Leadership styles and employee work-life balance: A systematic literature review

Rizkinta Amelia Batubara, Abdul Mujib

This systematic literature review examines the relationship between leadership styles and employee work-life balance (WLB). Following the PRISMA protocol, data were collected from four academic databases (Publish or Perish/Google Scholar, Scopus, Emerald Insight) using the PICO framework. From an initial pool of 296 articles, 31 studies met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The findings consistently demonstrate that transformational leadership exerts a significant positive influence on WLB by fostering a supportive work environment, providing psychological resources, and promoting flexible work arrangements. Supportive and authentic leadership styles also show positive correlations, while authoritarian leadership is consistently detrimental. The review identifies perceived organizational support and flexible work policies as key mediating factors. The results underscore that effective, people-oriented leadership is crucial for cultivating organizational cultures that support employee well-being and sustainable work-life integration. Organizations are advised to develop leadership training programs that focus on empathy, flexibility, and empowerment. This study contributes to the literature by synthesizing evidence across diverse contexts and suggests that future research should explore causal relationships and the moderating role of cultural and organizational variables.

The Quran And Positive Law: A Philosophical Review In A Normative Legal Perspective

Faisol Mahmoud Adam Ibrahim, Moh Aziz Arifin

This study aims to examine the relationship between the Qur'an as a source of Islamic law and positive Indonesian law from a philosophical perspective. Specifically, this study aims to understand the position of legal values in the Qur'an towards the formation of positive law, as well as to examine the philosophical implications of the differences in the normative basis of the two. This title is important to study because in the practice of the national legal system, there is often a tug-of-war between legal values derived from religion and the modern legal system rooted in the secular Western tradition. Given that Indonesia is a country with a Muslim majority population, the relevance of the Qur'an in the formation of law cannot be ignored, both in terms of legal ethics, justice values, and the formation of written legal norms. This study is formulated through two main questions: (1) What is the position of the Qur'an as a source of legal values in the construction of positive law in Indonesia? and (2) What are the philosophical implications of the differences in the normative basis between the Qur'an and positive law towards the formation of legislation? To answer these questions, the method used is the normative legal research method with a legal philosophy approach and a legislative approach. The main data sources consist of primary legal materials in the form of laws and regulations and interpretations of legal verses in the Qur'an, as well as secondary legal materials such as Islamic legal literature and legal philosophy theories. The results of the study indicate that the Qur'an contains universal justice values that are in line with the basic principles of positive law, such as justice, welfare, and legal certainty. Although there are differences in the form and structure of law, philosophically, both can complement each other within the framework of developing a just national law. This study recommends an integrative approach in formulating positive law that is not only based on legal-formal rationality, but also considers transcendental values that originate from revelation.

Integration between Islamic Revelation and Local Culture: A Study of Theology and the Indigenisation of Islam in Indonesia

Moh. Ashif Fuadi, Moh. Mahbub, Nor Huda Ali et al.

This research explains the Islamic revelation in the context of the synergy between fiqh and tradition. Using qualitative methods, this research concludes that: first, the pribumization of Islam is the result of the thought of K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) by seeking harmonization between fiqh and tradition. Gus Dur referred to the compromising process of Islamization by the Walisongo in spreading Islam in Nusantara as a very effective instrument or medium in the spreading of Islam. Secondly, in the Islamic Pribumization discourse, Gus Dur used the fiqh methodology of al-'ādah muhakkamah and al-'tsābit bi al-'urf ka al-tsābit bi al-nash, which were seen as capable of paying attention to the needs present in the local culture. For example, the greeting assalamu’alaikum is interpreted in the good morning greeting only in the relationship of mu’amalah, not up to the level of worship, in the custom of marriage by carrying out the conditions of harmony, but still given space in expressing their respective cultures while not contrary to religion. Third, based on its historical flow, religious values within culture in the Pribumization of Islam substantially shifted towards the discourse of Islam Nusantara and are now transformed into one of the indicators of religious moderation, namely accommodating a local culture so that it has a relevant relationship therein.

The commitment to a midwifery centre care model in Bangladesh: An interview study with midwives, educators and students

Noor Islam Pappu, Ida Öberg, Ulrika Byrskog et al.

Background
Midwifery-led care is a key factor in reducing maternal and new-born mortality globally. In Bangladesh, only a third of births are attended by professionals and almost 70% of births occur outside healthcare facilities. Midwifery is a relatively new profession in Bangladesh and a midwifery centre care model has only recently been introduced. This study aims to explore the willingness within the healthcare system to support a greater role for midwifery centres in maternity services.
Methods
Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with 55 midwives, midwifery educators and final year midwifery students. Two of the midwifery educators were principals of nursing institutes involved in the government’s midwifery leadership and considered as experts in the midwifery care system. The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. The transcribed interviews comprised 150 pages. The study received ethical approval from the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery in Bangladesh.
Results
One main category emerged from the study: “The foundations of a midwifery centre care model need to be strengthened for the sustainable implementation of midwifery centres in Bangladesh to continue”. Five additional categories were identified: 1) The midwifery centre care model is inaccessible for communities, 2) Striving for acceptable standards of care within a midwifery centre care model is not a priority 3) Respectful, woman-centred care is weak, 4) Community engagement with the midwifery centre care model is insufficient, and 5) The midwifery centre care model is not integrated into the healthcare system. These categories were supported by the identification of 11 sub-categories.
Conclusion
The willingness to commit to a midwifery centre care model is not yet in place in Bangladesh. Advocacy, information, and education about the benefits of normal birth assisted by professional midwives is needed at all levels of Bangladeshi society.

Before Maqāṣid

Youcef L Soufi

This article provides a sketch of the historical antecedent to the 11th century theory of maqāṣid al-sharī‘a (the purposes of the law). I examine the role of human benefit (maṣlaḥa) within the classical Shafi‘i school, focusing on the 10th and 11th centuries. I show that Shafi‘i law gave consideration of benefit a central role in the interpretation of scripture. This is attested to in both texts of legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh) and substantive law (furū‘ al-fiqh). Importantly, I also explain how Shafi‘is subjected their claims about benefit to contestation and debate, acknowledging the limits to humans’ ability to apprehend God’s law. In presenting this classical model of benefit in the Shafi‘i school, the essay offers an alternative for reformists who invoke the maqāṣid al-sharī‘a today—an alternative that has a deep pedigree within the Islamic tradition and promotes the democratization of debate over the benefits of the law.

“Secularism” or “no-secularism”? A complex case of Bangladesh

Abdul Wohab

The incidents (in 2017) of changing the secular content of textbooks and removing a sculpture from the Supreme Court premises in Bangladesh raise a question among people who are sympathetic to secularism that Bangladesh is moving towards a theological state like Pakistan or becoming an Islamic country. They also refer to the remark that the current Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina) made in 2014 that Bangladesh’s state administration would run under the rule of the Medina Charter (an Islamic constitution based on the Holy Quran and Sunnah, which aims to establish peace and unity by creating universal rules), as an indication of the religious characteristic that would remain at the centre of the state political activities in Bangladesh. By examining the historical and social context of Bangladesh since 1971 and reviewing the relevant contents of four newspapers—the Daily Inqilab (Bengali), the Prothom Alo (Bengali), the Daily Naya Diganta (Bengali) and the Daily Star (English)—from 2014 to 2017, this article rejects the claim made by the people who are sympathetic to secularism. This article, however, argues that Islam was traditionally/historically integrated in Bangladeshi society and culture as a unique (syncretistic) tradition in which political parties were forced to apply religious symbols and language in the political environments to stay in the government’s power. The article concludes by raising a question with the current integration of secular political party and Islamist force (Hefazat-e-Islam), being although there is a functional relationship remaining between secularism and Islam at the state level, is Bangladesh stepping into a “no secularism” era?

DOES DIGITAL FINANCIAL INCLUSION MATTER FOR BANK RISK-TAKING? EVIDENCE FROM THE DUAL-BANKING SYSTEM

Hasanul Banna, Md Rabiul Alam

This paper examines the nexus between digital financial inclusion (DFI) and levels of bank risk-taking, using a sample of 283 commercial banks (Islamic and conventional) from six countries over the period 2011 to 2019 and deploying panel-corrected standard errors, two-stage least squares-instrumental variables and dynamic panel two-step generalized method of moments estimators. The findings suggest that Islamic banks take more risks than their counterpart conventional banks. The empirical evidence also indicates that an increase in the DFI index score reduces the overall level of bank risktaking and increases that of banking stability for commercial and conventional banks compared to Islamic ones. A strong association between DFI and bank risk-taking suggests that DFI not only reduces the default risk, leverage risk and portfolio risk of banks, but also increases financial mobility in the sample countries. Consequently, an inclusive digitalised banking industry ensures sustainable economic growth, which is likely to help maintain financial sustainability in times of crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Our results are shown to be robust by various robustness checks. The study contributes to both the Islamic and conventional banking, as well as the digital financial inclusion, literature. The findings of the study provide various policy implications for policymakers and standard-setters in the countries examined.

Hadislerde Hz. Peygamber’in Eleştirileri

Recep Bilgin
