Research on Individual Trait Clustering and Development Pathway Adaptation Based on the K-means Algorithm
Qianru Wei, Jihaoyu Yang, Cheng Zhang
et al.
With the development of information technology, the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the field of education shows great potential. This study aims to explore how to utilize K-means clustering algorithm to provide accurate career guidance for college students. Existing methods mostly focus on the prediction of career paths, but there are fewer studies on the fitness of students with different combinations of characteristics in specific career directions. In this study, we analyze the data of more than 3000 students on their CET-4 scores, GPA, personality traits and student cadre experiences, and use the K-means clustering algorithm to classify the students into four main groups. The K-means clustering algorithm groups students with similar characteristics into one group by minimizing the intra-cluster squared error, ensuring that the students within the same cluster are highly similar in their characteristics, and that differences between different clusters are maximized. Based on the clustering results, targeted career guidance suggestions are provided for each group. The results of the study show that students with different combinations of characteristics are suitable for different career directions, which provides a scientific basis for personalized career guidance and effectively enhances students' employment success rate. Future research can further improve the precision of clustering and the guidance effect by expanding the sample size, increasing the feature variables and considering external factors.
Improving Graduate Outcomes by Identifying Skills Gaps and Recommending Courses Based on Career Interests
Rahul Soni, Basem Suleiman, Sonit Singh
This paper aims to address the challenge of selecting relevant courses for students by proposing the design and development of a course recommendation system. The course recommendation system utilises a combination of data analytics techniques and machine learning algorithms to recommend courses that align with current industry trends and requirements. In order to provide customised suggestions, the study entails the design and implementation of an extensive algorithmic framework that combines machine learning methods, user preferences, and academic criteria. The system employs data mining and collaborative filtering techniques to examine past courses and individual career goals in order to provide course recommendations. Moreover, to improve the accessibility and usefulness of the recommendation system, special attention is given to the development of an easy-to-use front-end interface. The front-end design prioritises visual clarity, interaction, and simplicity through iterative prototyping and user input revisions, guaranteeing a smooth and captivating user experience. We refined and optimised the proposed system by incorporating user feedback, ensuring that it effectively meets the needs and preferences of its target users. The proposed course recommendation system could be a useful tool for students, instructors, and career advisers to use in promoting lifelong learning and professional progression as it fills the gap between university learning and industry expectations. We hope that the proposed course recommendation system will help university students in making data-drive and industry-informed course decisions, in turn, improving graduate outcomes for the university sector.
Women upskilling or reskilling to an ICT career: A systematic review of drivers and barriers
Shondell Williams, Karen Blackmore, Regina Berretta
et al.
Demand for technology focused STEM professionals will increase globally over the coming decade, with many countries finding it difficult to meet growing demand. Compounding this are difficulties in attracting and retaining female technology-focused professionals. Research seeking to address this gender imbalance and workforce shortage focuses on increasing participation among school leavers. However, there is a paucity of research around the potential for females to upskill or reskill into an ICT career. As a starting point, this review asks the question: "What potential drivers and barriers have been identified that impact on female intentions or choices to reskill or upskill to a technology focused STEM career". Results indicate dissatisfaction in a first career, combined with positive computing experiences in the workplace can rouse interest in computing professions. Learning of job opportunities, especially from salient referents, is also a key driver. Results indicate women must overcome negative identity and academic beliefs, as well as self-doubt to make the switch. In summary, it is possible to increase and diversify the tech workforce by leveraging women's latent interest in computing. This review provides a roadmap for research to support educational institutions, employers, and women to benefit from upskilling or reskilling opportunities

Synergistic Development of Cybersecurity and Functional Safety for Smart Electric Vehicles
Siddhesh Pimpale
The introduction of Smart Electric Vehicles (SEVs) represents an increasingly disruption on automotive area, once integrates advanced computer and communication technologies to highly electrical cars, which come with high performances, environment friendly and user friendly characteristics . But the increasing complexity of SEVs prompted by greater dependence on interconnected systems, autonomous capabilities and electrification, presents new challenges in cybersecurity as well as functional safety. The safety and reliability of such vehicles is paramount, as unsafe or unreliable operation in either case represents an unacceptable risk in terms of the performance of the vehicle and safety of the passenger. This paper investigates the integrated development of cybersecurity and functional safety for SEVs, emphasizing the requirement for the parallel development of these domains as components that are not treated separately. In SEVs, cybersecurity is quite crucial in order to prevent the threats of hacking, data breaches and unauthorized access to vehicle systems. Functional safety ensures that important vehicle functions (braking, steering, battery control, etc.) keep working even if some part fails. This convergence of functional safety issues with cybersecurity issues is becoming more crucial, since a security incident can result in a failure of catastrophic consequences for a functional safety system and, conversely. This paper reports the current state of cybersecurity and functional safety standards for SEVs, highlighting challenges that include the weaknesses of communication networks, the potential security threats of over-the-air updates, and the demand for real-time responsive systems for failure.
Gender and Careers in Platform-Mediated Work: A Longitudinal Study of Online Freelancers
Pyeonghwa Kim, Steve Sawyer, Michael Dunn
We advance gender-inclusive research within the CSCW field by investigating the long-term gendered experiences of online freelancers on digital labor platforms. The prevalence of gender-based inequalities has attracted significant attention within the CSCW community. Yet, insights remain limited on how these inequalities shape workers' long-term experiences on digital labor platforms. Through a five-year longitudinal study of 105 freelancers on Upwork, we reveal persistent gender disparities that influence workers' long-term work and career trajectories, raising concerns about the sustainability of platform-mediated work. We advance the ongoing dialogue on gender inclusivity in the community by introducing the concepts of career disempowerment and platform-mediated motherhood penalty and by offering research and design implications for CSCW to foster more sustainable, equitable platform work environments for all genders.

The Long Shadow of Superstars: Effects on Opportunities, Careers, and Team Production
Masaya Nishihata
Superstars often dominate key tasks because of their exceptional abilities, but this concentration of responsibility may unintentionally limit on-the-job learning opportunities for others. Using panel data from Major League Baseball (MLB), this study examines how superstar presence affects teammates' opportunities and career outcomes. To address potential endogeneity in team composition, we exploit plausibly exogenous variation in superstar availability caused by injuries. When a superstar is active in the same team-position unit, non-star teammates play significantly less. These short-term reductions in playing time extend to longer horizons: players who begin their careers alongside a superstar who remains active for a full season (i.e., not on the injured list) are about 1.7 times more likely to exit MLB earlier than comparable peers. A key mechanism is reduced skill development -- limited playing opportunities hinder subsequent growth in offensive performance. At the team level, greater dependence on superstars raises immediate productivity but magnifies performance declines after their departure, indicating a trade-off between short-term success and long-term adaptability. Overall, the findings suggest that while concentrating key roles in top performers boosts output in the short run, it can restrict others' development and retention. Similar dynamics may arise in other organizations that rely heavily on a few exceptional individuals.
Embedded DevOps: A Survey on the Application of DevOps Practices in Embedded Software and Firmware Development
Parthiv Katapara, Anand Sharma
The adoption of DevOps practices in embedded systems and firmware development is emerging as a response to the growing complexity of modern hardware--software co-designed products. Unlike cloud-native applications, embedded systems introduce challenges such as hardware dependency, real-time constraints, and safety-critical requirements. This literature review synthesizes findings from 20 academic and industrial sources to examine how DevOps principles--particularly continuous integration, continuous delivery, and automated testing--are adapted to embedded contexts. We categorize efforts across tooling, testing strategies, pipeline automation, and security practices. The review highlights current limitations in deployment workflows and observability, proposing a roadmap for future research. This work offers researchers and practitioners a consolidated understanding of Embedded DevOps, bridging fragmented literature with a structured perspective.
Children from the poor families seem to grow up earlier: An examination of how family economy stress links to career exploration
Xiaomei Cheng, Guangya Ma, Lu Zhang
et al.
Career exploration, a critical antecedent to college students’ career choices and employment, offers essential guidance for their career development. However, existing research has not explored how changes in family economic stress impact career exploration. Drawing on social cognitive career theory, this study aims to deepen our understanding of the complex interplay between family economic stress and career exploration among vocational school students. We tested our hypotheses using three-time lagged data collected from 600 vocational school students studying in mainland China. As expected, family economic stress positively predicts career exploration via love of money. Additionally, both students’ effective part-time behavior and teacher support were found to positively moderate the indirect relationship between family economic stress and career exploration through love of money. We attempt to highlight the broader implications of understanding the nuanced ways in which economic background shapes career exploration. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
Personality Traits and Work Values as Predictors of Vocational Interests Among University Students
Anna Veres, Tünde Póka
"Many organizations and career guidance professionals are curious about what personality traits can tell them about a person’s potential, qualities and attitude to work. This study assessed the personality traits, work values and vocational interests of university students. The relationships between these three constructs were investigates, and more specifically, the extent to which personality traits and work value can predict vocational interest. Vocational interest determines one’s career development and work choice. The study included 304 participants with a mean age of 25.4 years (SD=8.11). In our analysis, we used the HEXACO personality questionnaire, the Work Value Questionnaire measuring 15 subcategories and the RIASEC Vocational Interest Questionnaire. The aim of this study is to get a clearer picture of the relationship between personality traits, work values and vocational interests. The results show that personality traits are also predictive, but together with work value, they are stronger predictors of vocational interest. The results are presented in the light of career development. Keywords: personality traits, vocational interest, work value, university students"

Career Counseling in Early Childhood Education
Magdalena Barańska
The aim of this article is to outline how career guidance classes in early childhood education can be valuable for lifelong development. Career counselling is still strongly associated with helping adults, the unemployed, to retrain. It is treated as an expert service primarily related to the labour market. Career counselling should be disenchanted. Undoubtedly, it is a professional service, but it is equally firmly inscribed in the educational process. According to the core curriculum, one of the tasks of the school is to prepare students to choose their further education and profession. The school runs vocational guidance classes, which fit in with lifelong learning. Due to the approaching transition from primary to secondary school, much attention is paid to counselling classes for seventh and eighth graders. However, developing interests and getting to know oneself starts much earlier, so it is worth weaving elements of vocational knowledge into the process.
A Career Interview Dialogue System using Large Language Model-based Dynamic Slot Generation
Ekai Hashimoto, Mikio Nakano, Takayoshi Sakurai
et al.
This study aims to improve the efficiency and quality of career interviews conducted by nursing managers. To this end, we have been developing a slot-filling dialogue system that engages in pre-interviews to collect information on staff careers as a preparatory step before the actual interviews. Conventional slot-filling-based interview dialogue systems have limitations in the flexibility of information collection because the dialogue progresses based on predefined slot sets. We therefore propose a method that leverages large language models (LLMs) to dynamically generate new slots according to the flow of the dialogue, achieving more natural conversations. Furthermore, we incorporate abduction into the slot generation process to enable more appropriate and effective slot generation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted experiments using a user simulator. The results suggest that the proposed method using abduction is effective in enhancing both information-collecting capabilities and the naturalness of the dialogue.

Ranking mobility and impact inequality in early academic careers
Ye Sun, Fabio Caccioli, Giacomo Livan
How difficult is it for an early career academic to climb the ranks of their discipline? We tackle this question with a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 57 disciplines, examining the publications of more than 5 million authors whose careers started between 1986 and 2008. We calibrate a simple random walk model over historical data of ranking mobility, which we use to (1) identify which strata of academic impact rankings are the most/least mobile and (2) study the temporal evolution of mobility. By focusing our analysis on cohorts of authors starting their careers in the same year, we find that ranking mobility is remarkably low for the top and bottom-ranked authors, and that this excess of stability persists throughout the entire period of our analysis. We further observe that mobility of impact rankings has increased over time, and that such rise has been accompanied by a decline of impact inequality, which is consistent with the negative correlation that we observe between such two quantities. These findings provide clarity on the opportunities of new scholars entering the academic community, with implications for academic policymaking.
Hindered, compelled, or desired: three facets of career transition through the prism of socio-professional categories
Camille Stephanus, Josiane Vero
Employees in low-skilled jobs have limited agency when it comes to professional retraining. Career transitions for low-skilled white-collar workers, despite their frequent desire to change professions, are often hindered; they prove to be more common but constrained and externally driven for low-skilled blue-collar workers.
