By covering the body with animal skin, the fundamental differences between human and animals can change. Wearing the fur of a wild animal, such as a bear, is generally seen as a sign of strength; can wearing luxurious pelts consequently be understood in the same way? The discrepancy between nature and culture is obvious. Pelt, on the one hand, is a sign of a fully established cultural process, but nevertheless it is the skin of a beast which the fictional protagonists of the courtly society wear. The central question of this article is how the motif of wearing animal skin, and especially pelt, is used in a literary text. Can the apparent difference between roughly tanned animal skin and costly pelts be more than a status symbol? The article discusses the oscillation between humans and animals by means of wearing fur or pelt in the late medieval tale Aristoteles und Phyllis. Also, to consider human-animal discourse more generally, the ambiguity of the Middle High German term vel will be discussed by the example of passages of pelt wearing figures in the work of Wolfram von Eschenbach.

The purpose of this article is to make a comparative analysis of Wisława Szymborska's poem "Utopia" with its Norwegian translation from 1996. Since the original piece in Polish has a very specific construction, which is based on the use of idioms and puns, it is difficult to transfer it to virtually any language. The key to the critical commentary of Ole Michael Selberg's translation is the notion of ,"aura", borrowed from Walter Benjamin. As a tool for aesthetic analysis it corresponds well with changes that occur in his version of "Utopia". At the same time, this article gives an insight into what kind of place does Wisława Szymborska's work find in the Norwegian literary consciousness.

Abstract: This study tries to shed light on the role of dictionary examples in the comprehension of word meanings. An experimental procedure has been devised whereby two groups of students with English as major subject at Kuwait University were asked to provide the Arabic equivalents for ten English headwords. The first group was given a list of entries for these words copied from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD) while the second group had to read the same list but without illustrative examples. Results indicate that the students' decoding performance was negatively affected by the presence of illustrative examples in the dictionary entry.

Keywords: ARABIC, BILINGUAL DICTIONARY, COMPREHENSION, EFL DICTIONARY,ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE, MONOLINGUAL DICTIONARY, TRANSLATION

Opsomming: Die doeltreffendheid van woordeboekvoorbeelde by dekodering:Die geval van Koeweiti-aanleerders van Engels. Before an assessment of this dictionary is made, it is important to place the Khwe language in its historical and social context. Khwe dam (language of the Khwe), as its speakers would prefer to call it, is a Khoisan language belonging to the Southern African Central-Khoisan under the Khoe cluster (Güldemann and Vossen 2000). It is spoken in Northern Botswana and in the Western Capri-vi Strip of Namibia in the Kavango region. As the compiler correctly observes, there are about 10 000 Khwe-speaking people who live in the Caprivi Strip of North-Western Namibia, Angola, Botswana and Zambia, and at Schmidtsdrift, South Africa. As can be expected from a speech community such as the Khwe, who prefer living in small communities, there are dialects within the Khwe dam. In Botswana, the notable varieties are the Buga (Sand Khwe) and the ≤Ani (River Khwe), which exhibit discernable linguistic differences at the lexical and grammatical levels. However, linguists agree, as Kilian-Hatz also indicates, that the Khwe dam dialectal varieties are definitely related and mutually fairly intelligible (cf. Güldemann and Vossen 2000). As a language that has not been elaborately codified, it is difficult to speak about a standard Khwe dam form. Many other social and linguistic activities need to be carried out to resolve the question of standard Khwe dam (cf. WIMSA 2001).
