Agentic Business Process Management Systems

Marlon Dumas, Fredrik Milani, David Chapela-Campa

Since the early 90s, the evolution of the Business Process Management (BPM) discipline has been punctuated by successive waves of automation technologies. Some of these technologies enable the automation of individual tasks, while others focus on orchestrating the execution of end-to-end processes. The rise of Generative and Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) is opening the way for another such wave. However, this wave is poised to be different because it shifts the focus from automation to autonomy and from design-driven management of business processes to data-driven management, leveraging process mining techniques. This position paper, based on a keynote talk at the 2025 Workshop on AI for BPM, outlines how process mining has laid the foundations on top of which agents can sense process states, reason about improvement opportunities, and act to maintain and optimize performance. The paper proposes an architectural vision for Agentic Business Process Management Systems (A-BPMS): a new class of platforms that integrate autonomy, reasoning, and learning into process management and execution. The paper contends that such systems must support a continuum of processes, spanning from human-driven to fully autonomous, thus redefining the boundaries of process automation and governance.

STRUCTURAL AND STYLISTIC FEATURES OF URAN AKATAYULY'S KUYS (EXAMPLES FROM "MEREKE", "SANLAQ", AND "QANAT QAQTI")

Saida Yelemanova , Lazat Akikhat

The proposed article is dedicated to the creative path of the kuyshi from the Tarbagatai region (PRC) — Uran Akatayuly. It is well known that Kazakh kuy art, depending on its geographical and regional characteristics as well as performance features, is divided into various regional kuy traditions. Among them, the kuy tradition of Eastern Kazakhstan has deep historical roots and covers a vast territory. One of its branches is the kuy school (күй мектебі) of the Kazakhs of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. In this region — in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, as well as in Altay, Tarbagatai, Ili, and the prefectures of Sanji, Boro-Tala, the Kumul region, Gansu province, and the cities of Kuytun, Shihezi, and Urumqi — about two million of our compatriots reside. The study of kuy art in these regions can be said to be at an early stage in domestic scholarship. The article addresses the following issues: 1) a description of the kuyshi’s creative work, and 2) a musical analysis of the most notable compositions by the above-mentioned performer. The article is based on materials collected during the author’s ethnographic and folklore expedition conducted in January 2024 in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture (city of Kuldzha). The applied methods include the comparative-typological and system-ethnophonic approach (I. Matsiyevsky). The methodology for analyzing dombra kuys developed by Professor S. Öteğalieva is also used. For certain compositions, their origin stories and content are presented, along with a detailed musical analysis.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODELS IN THE DANCE INDUSTRY: INTEGRATION OF ARTISTIC AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

Xiao Ping, Nursilah Nursilah, R. R. Alhempi

The dance industry faces challenges in economic sustainability due to the increasingly complex and rapidly changing dynamics of the arts market. This study aims to design a sustainable business model that integrates artistic and economic dimensions in dance production practices. By adopting a descriptive qualitative approach and reviewing literature from various sources, this study explores performing arts monetization practices, revenue diversification strategies, and digital technology-based innovations such as crowdfunding, merchandise, and digital products. The study results show that the sustainability of the dance industry is highly dependent on the ability of artists to build an adaptive, collaborative, and culturally value-based business system. The integration of choreographers' artistic visions and economic strategies has been shown to increase the resilience of arts organizations to crises, expand their audience base, and strengthen the socio-economic legitimacy of dance. This study provides a conceptual contribution to the development of an arts business model framework relevant to the context of the creative industry in the digital era, as well as practical implications for artists and policymakers in supporting a sustainable performing arts ecosystem.

THE CREATIVE TANDEM “AQUERIAS” – “BRATY BLYUZU” AMONG YOUNG PERFORMERS OF THE ARTISTIC PROJECT “UKRAINE. SPRING. SLAVUTYCH–1995”

Oksana Lan

An important stage in the process of Slavytych’s cultural self-determination was the organization of large-scale artistic events in the early 1990s including cultural initiatives functioning as a means of shaping the city’s identity. In 1995, a major international art project titled “Ukrayina. Vesna. Slavutych” took place with the participation of well-known young Ukrainian artists among whom were the band “Braty Blyuzu” and the modern ballet “Aquerias” performing a joint piece. During the implementation of these initiatives, the interaction of two main cultural processes was observed. On the one hand, the organization of artistic events involving foreign stars helped shape the image of Slavutych as a city open to dialogue and innovative practices. On the other hand, the participation of leading Ukrainian performers in international show business projects contributed to their symbolic “Europeanization” meaning their integration into the international cultural context which opened new opportunities for their future professional growth. The purpose of the article is to define the creative work of the tandem between the band “Braty Blyuzu” and the modern ballet “Aquerias” within the group of young performers of the artistic action “Ukrayina. Vesna. Slavutych” (1995) alongside an analysis of the event and its historical and cultural-artistic contribution in the context of the development of Ukrainian stage art. The scientific novelty of the work lies in a detailed description of the art project “Ukrayina. Vesna. Slavutych” (1995) and the definition of the creativity of the tandem consisting of the modern ballet “Aquerias” written as “Aquerias” (O. L.) and the band “Braty Blyuzu”. This includes the analysis of the choreographic and musical components of the composition titled “Halyts’ka Syuyita: L’vivs’ki Kvitnykarky” associated with “Authentic Life”. The creative tandem of the leaders of the modern ballet “Aquerias” and the band “Braty Blyuzu” namely the choreographer Oksana Lan and the composer Myroslav Levytskyi gave birth to the development of the jazz-folk musical and choreographic genre in Ukraine. It is our conviction that the study of the choreography of the 1990s requires a more thorough and methodical approach. For the realization of the large-scale artistic action “Ukrayina. Vesna. Slavutych” in 1995, the best representatives of various formations of the 1990s were invited.

Digital Economy and Baumol’s Cost Disease of Performing Arts: An Empirical Research in China

Ming Ma, Yangfei Liu

Abstract In the past decade, the Chinese government’s financial subsidies for performing arts troupes accounted for an average of 50.57% of their total income. By the end of 2021, China has 18,370 performing arts troupes and 3,093 performing arts venues. The research conclusions of this paper include the following four points: (1) Digital live-streaming theater(DLT) is an “innovation” for traditional Stage Theater(ST) performance, and its changes in creation mechanism, audience-actors relationship, technical esthetics and business model are worthy of further study. (2) Data from 2011 to 2021 show that Baumol’s cost disease also exists in Chinese performing arts. (3) The Chinese government has been reducing its direct management and control of arts troupes, trying to move toward “arm’s length” governance. (4) During the COVID-19 epidemic, performance case data from China show that DLT can indeed reduce the marginal cost, attract more young audiences, and increase performance revenue. However, considering the high technical cost input, whether digital technology can alleviate the cost disease of performing arts still needs more annual industry data analysis.

Business Model Contributions to Bank Profit Performance: A Machine Learning Approach

F. Bolivar, Miguel A. Duran, A. Lozano-Vivas

This paper analyzes the relation between bank profit performance and business models. Using a machine learning-based approach, we propose a methodological strategy in which balance sheet components' contributions to profitability are the identification instruments of business models. We apply this strategy to the European Union banking system from 1997 to 2021. Our main findings indicate that the standard retail-oriented business model is the profile that performs best in terms of profitability, whereas adopting a non-specialized business profile is a strategic decision that leads to poor profitability. Additionally, our findings suggest that the effect of high capital ratios on profitability depends on the business profile. The contributions of business models to profitability decreased during the Great Recession. Although the situation showed signs of improvement afterward, the European Union banking system's ability to yield returns is still problematic in the post-crisis period, even for the best-performing group.

Business and ethical concerns in domestic Conversational Generative AI-empowered multi-robot systems

Rebekah Rousi, Hooman Samani, Niko Mäkitalo et al.

Business and technology are intricately connected through logic and design. They are equally sensitive to societal changes and may be devastated by scandal. Cooperative multi-robot systems (MRSs) are on the rise, allowing robots of different types and brands to work together in diverse contexts. Generative artificial intelligence has been a dominant topic in recent artificial intelligence (AI) discussions due to its capacity to mimic humans through the use of natural language and the production of media, including deep fakes. In this article, we focus specifically on the conversational aspects of generative AI, and hence use the term Conversational Generative artificial intelligence (CGI). Like MRSs, CGIs have enormous potential for revolutionizing processes across sectors and transforming the way humans conduct business. From a business perspective, cooperative MRSs alone, with potential conflicts of interest, privacy practices, and safety concerns, require ethical examination. MRSs empowered by CGIs demand multi-dimensional and sophisticated methods to uncover imminent ethical pitfalls. This study focuses on ethics in CGI-empowered MRSs while reporting the stages of developing the MORUL model.

Web-based Interactive Narratives to Present Business Processes Models

Márcio Rocha Ferreira, Tadeu Moreira de Classe, Sean Wolfgand Matsui Siqueira

Interactive narratives offer a novel approach to presenting business process models, making them more accessible and collaborative. These narratives create a hyper-textual environment that facilitates knowledge exchange and comprehension for ordinary individuals. However, designing such narratives is complex, as business process modelers must accurately identify and translate the graphic elements of a process model into dynamic narrative elements. This research paper introduces the Scripting Your Process (SYP) method, which provides a systematic approach to designing interactive narratives based on business process models. Following the principles of Design Science Research (DSR), a quasi-experimental study demonstrates and evaluates the SYP method. The results show that the SYP method successfully achieves its objective, contributing to the systematic design of interactive narratives derived from business process models. Consequently, individuals who are not experts in business process management can understand these processes in an engaging and gameful manner.

Nie ma jednych Chin: Teatry chińskie w Azji Wschodniej

Maciej Szatkowski

This article discusses Rossella Ferrari’s book Transnational Chinese Theatres: Intercultural Performance Networks in East Asia. This research monograph by a scholar of Chinese theaters focuses on characterizing transnational artist networks in East Asia. Investigating theater collaborations of artists from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Ferrari proposes a transnational and rhizomatic model for analyzing Sinophone culture. The book makes use of multiple sources not referenced in previous research, unpublished materials, and interviews. Ferrari explicitly dissociates herself from the orientalization of Eastern theaters; as her main method in researching them, she chooses Asia itself, following the Taiwanese cultural sociologist Chen Kuan-hsing (Asia as method) and listening carefully to the voice of Chinese theaters.

Exploitation Business: Leveraging Information Asymmetry

Kwangseob Ahn

This paper investigates the "Exploitation Business" model, which capitalizes on information asymmetry to exploit vulnerable populations. It focuses on businesses targeting non-experts or fraudsters who capitalize on information asymmetry to sell their products or services to desperate individuals. This phenomenon, also described as "profit-making activities based on informational exploitation," thrives on individuals' limited access to information, lack of expertise, and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). The recent advancement of social media and the rising trend of fandom business have accelerated the proliferation of such exploitation business models. Discussions on the empowerment and exploitation of fans in the digital media era present a restructuring of relationships between fans and media creators, highlighting the necessity of not overlooking the exploitation of fans' free labor. This paper analyzes the various facets and impacts of exploitation business models, enriched by real-world examples from sectors like cryptocurrency and GenAI, thereby discussing their social, economic, and ethical implications. Moreover, through theoretical backgrounds and research, it explores similar themes like existing exploitation theories, commercial exploitation, and financial exploitation to gain a deeper understanding of the "Exploitation Business" subject.

Shared SAT Solvers and SAT Memory in Distributed Business Applications

Sergejs Kozlovičs

We propose a software architecture where SAT solvers act as a shared network resource for distributed business applications. There can be multiple parallel SAT solvers running either on dedicated hardware (a multi-processor system or a system with a specific GPU) or in the cloud. In order to avoid complex message passing between network nodes, we introduce a novel concept of the shared SAT memory, which can be accessed (in the read/write mode) from multiple different SAT solvers and modules implementing the business logic. As a result, our architecture allows for the easy generation, diversification, and solving of SAT instances from existing high-level programming languages without the need to think about the network. We demonstrate our architecture on the use case of transforming the integer factorization problem to SAT.

Transmedia effects on business, aesthetics and production of a traditional cultural product on the example of shadow puppet shows in Indonesia

Arif Eko Suprihono, Timbul Raharjo, Sigit Handoko et al.

Media is one of the main instruments for promoting and differentiating businesses from each other. Awareness of the brand, loyalty to the brand, attitude towards the services and products of a business and other factors that affect the sales of more products are all possible with targeted advertising in media. Television interactions and performing arts show the power relationship to the issue of the new format of stage offerings into a screen with anew aesthetic. The studies in the community very clearly show the problem of media and technology intervention in traditional culture of Indonesia itself and in the ways of its promotion and monetization. The issue of hybridity is common in puppet shows (which will be a case for this research) in the community, although in fact the quality of the show becomes worth researching further. Qualitative approach promises a new perspective for the existence of traditional art in the digital media age. The case of media sharing uploads becomes the primary source of data, in addition to the forms of live performances in the community. Streaming technology is a testament to the level of stage art’s path to new digital culture communication. The results of the hypotheses testing based on the effect of digital marketing on the two variables of consumer participation and consumer value regarding the traditional Indonesian art of puppet shows did not have an acceptable significant effect (p < 0.05), but in relation to the role of digital marketing on consumer confidence, this amount is regarded as acceptable. Conclusion. Power relations produce creative products in the context of television culture, and become a reference for wayang hybridity in society. The success of revitalizing wayang golek as an investor power relation in shifting the function of wayang as a medium for public entertainment.

Opera Agents in 20th Century (1). Opera business and singers’ careers

Cristina Radu-Giurgiu

The key point in promoting singers’ careers in the 20th century was the Agent (known also as impresario, the art manager, the promoter). The business of opera is quite old, starting in the mid-17th century together with the newborn genre of lyric show, but in the 20th century, it has developed in more advanced forms, as a real institution. The “Opera Agents in 20th Century” is built in 2 parts. This first article presents the impresario throughout history, focusing on the development and the notable transformations of the opera business in the 20th century. The second part will consist of a related article, focusing on the role of the agent in developing and promoting the singers’ careers, different models of business contracts, agents’ fees (Compensation), and the modern agencies.

A digital business ecosystem maturity model for personal service firms

Ricardo Guerrero, Christoph Lattemann, Simon Michalke et al.

Personal services can be found in sectors such as education, retail, hospitality, and craftsmanship. As of today, personal service firms lack the know-how and experience on how to implement processes and practices to effectively build digital business ecosystems. This becomes an obstacle for these kinds of firms to overcome the challenges of todays digital age. Based on the guidelines of Design Science Research (DSR), we address this gap by proposing a maturity model, which offers specific guidance for this sector to be able to achieve the transition from analog to digital. The design of the model is grounded in a systematic literature review, semi-structured interviews, and a validation test involving company representatives from the field of personal services, business ecosystems, and digitalization. Results revealed a series of dimensions, capabilities, and maturity stages indicating an evolutionary path towards digital maturity for personal service firms. Thus, leading them to achieve a digital business ecosystem.
