Stamped Rhodian Amphorae in the Güray Museum: New Eponym-Fabricant Associations

Burcu Tüysüz, Gonca Şenol, Erkan Alkaç

Stamped amphorae and their stamps on them have been the subject of scientific studies for more than a century, and the stamped amphorae found in both archaeological excavations and museum collections have been evaluated and brought to the literature. The three complete stamped Rhodian amphorae registered in the Güray Museum inventory are the subject of this study. The aim of the study is to date the amphorae and to determine the eponyms and fabricants on the stamps on their handles. In this study, on the first amphora, the eponym Aratophanes I and the month Artamitios and the fabricant Aristokles II; on the second the eponym Aleximachos and the month Thesmophorios and the fabricant Bromios; on the last one, the eponym Timodikos and the month Sminthios and the fabricant Nysios were detected together. In this study, new eponym-fabricant associations, which were not previously identified, were detected and the use of fabricant and eponym matrices/dies together was revealed. Thus, new contributions have been made to the understanding of the Rhodian amphora stamping system and its chronology.

Gadis, Istri, atau Janda: Pendapat Paulus Tentang Seksualitas Perempuan dalam 1 Korintus 7

Rena Sesaria Yudhita

AbstractWomen’s sexuality has been defi ned, regulated and restricted throughout history, religions and cultures. Bible teachings regarding women’s sexuality have also responded to the concept of sexuality in its world. Thisresearch analyzes 1 Corinthians 7 using a socio-historical perspective to see how Paul applies specifi c rhetorical patterns to revise the concept of female sexuality lived by the Corinthians. The central theme of 1 Corinthians 7 is marriage and celibacy. Examining Corinth’s social and cultural context, this study verifi es that Paul’s opinion regarding women’s sexuality transcended those of the Jewish tradition and Greco-Roman culture. Nevertheless, behind his parallel statement pattern that appears more egalitarian, Paul is more interested in regulating women’s bodies and sexualities.

Numismatic News from Lycia 2021/2022

Wilhelm Müseler

This is the beginning of a new series monitoring on the one hand hitherto unknown types or unpublished variants from known series of ancient coins struck in Lycia, that have recently appeared at the international markets, and introducing on the other hand new research in the field by providing not only the bibliographical references but also short abstracts of the respective articles. It is meant to be continued on a fairly regular basis, perhaps in every second or third future issue. Readers are explicitly invited to participate and send in relevant observations and remarks to the author or to the editors of the journal.

According to Homer, ancient ruins were still visible in the Trojan plain at the time of the famous war, and were considered vestiges of an older world. This essay—which is part of an ongoing investigation into the various strata of the past that interact within the Iliad—focuses on two of these ruins. Its aim is not to discuss historical or archaeological issues, but to analyse some of the legends that scholiasts and mythographers relate to these remains. I seek to contribute to a better understanding of how certain tales, to which the Iliad refers without explaining them in any detail, resonated in the earliest Homeric performances.

Herodotus, the Old Sappho and the Newest Sappho

Donelli, Giulia

This paper focuses on Herodotus’ mention of Sappho in the Histories (2.134-5). Through the analysis of some of the extant sources on the involvement of her brother Charaxus with the hetaira Doricha/Rhodopis, it advances an interpretation of Sappho’s fr. 55 V as relevant to the affair. It then draws attention to Herodotus’ description of courtesans, in the same context, with the poetic term ἀοίδιμος. The adjective occurs only once in Homer, in the self-deprecating words that Helen speaks to Hector (Il. 6.354-8). Such Homeric echo might be understood as triggering an allusion to Sappho’s own treatment of Helen in fr. 16 V: Helen’s behaviour in that poem in fact closely matches no one other’s than Charaxus’ own. The possibility that Herodotus might be engaging with more than one Sapphic poem in this context finds a parallel in his engagement with Pindar’s poetry in 3.38, where, it has been argued, he ‘contaminates’ two distinct Pindaric intertexts (frr. 169a and 215 S.-M.). The contamination of thematically linked poems might in turn suggest, in both cases, sympotic reperformances as possible contexts for Herodotus’ reception of Greek lyric poetry.

The Brothel of Pompeii

Sarah Levin-Richardson

In this book, Sarah Levin-Richardson offers the first authoritative examination of Pompeii’s purpose-built brothel, the only verifiable brothel from Greco-Roman antiquity. Taking readers on a tour of the structure, including the rarely seen upper floor, she illuminates the subculture housed within its walls. Here, prostitutes could flout the norms of society and proclaim themselves sexual subjects and agents, while servile clients were allowed to act as “real men.” Prostitutes and clients also exchanged gifts, greetings, jokes, taunts, and praise. Written in a clear, engaging style and accompanied by ample illustrations and translations of humorous and haunting graffitti, Levin-Richardson’s book will become a new touchstone for those interested in the history of women, slavery, and prostitution in the classical world.

Françoise Frazier & Olivier Guerrier (coords.), Plutarque. Éditions, Traductions, Paratextes. Coimbra e São Paulo, Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra e Annablume, 2016. 229 pp.

Joaquim Pinheiro

Jean-Pierre De Giorgio

In Cicero’s correspondence, the references to the landscape and the sights from the villas do not only mean that the epistolary "dialogue" often emphasizes the spatiotemporal frame of the exchange. Talking about landscape is of course a way of praising private properties of the correspondents. But we also know that landscape and views can express feelings and psychological states. Furthermore, they are a frame for witty badinage and complex scaenographic constructions with the amici docti. They also have a role to play in the thoughts, exchanged between educated familiars, on the political situation : in the letters, the landscape, seen by the private man, is still eminently political.

Homero nos poetas líricos: recepção e transmissão

Adrian Kelly

Decolonization of the Filipino Church after Vatican II

Térence, Fay, Sj

The Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 initiated the second major paradigm shift in the Catholic Church. The first major paradigm shift, according to Karl Rahner, was the transition from a Jewish Christian Church after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. to the initiation of the Greco-Roman Church which flourished for almost 1,900 years in many parts of the world. 1 The second great paradigm shift in the history of the Catholic Church arrived after Vatican II, which ended the lengthy sway of the Greco-Roman Church and led, as Rahner wrote, to “the Church actualizing itself precisely as a world Church.” 2
