Abstrak

In Cicero’s correspondence, the references to the landscape and the sights from the villas do not only mean that the epistolary "dialogue" often emphasizes the spatiotemporal frame of the exchange. Talking about landscape is of course a way of praising private properties of the correspondents. But we also know that landscape and views can express feelings and psychological states. Furthermore, they are a frame for witty badinage and complex scaenographic constructions with the amici docti. They also have a role to play in the thoughts, exchanged between educated familiars, on the political situation : in the letters, the landscape, seen by the private man, is still eminently political.
