CutPaste: Self-Supervised Learning for Anomaly Detection and Localization

Chun-Liang Li, Kihyuk Sohn, Jinsung Yoon et al.

We aim at constructing a high performance model for defect detection that detects unknown anomalous patterns of an image without anomalous data. To this end, we propose a two-stage framework for building anomaly detectors using normal training data only. We first learn self-supervised deep representations and then build a generative one-class classifier on learned representations. We learn representations by classifying normal data from the CutPaste, a simple data augmentation strategy that cuts an image patch and pastes at a random location of a large image. Our empirical study on MVTec anomaly detection dataset demonstrates the proposed algorithm is general to be able to detect various types of real-world defects. We bring the improvement upon previous arts by 3.1 AUCs when learning representations from scratch. By transfer learning on pretrained representations on ImageNet, we achieve a new state-of-the-art 96.6 AUC. Lastly, we extend the framework to learn and extract representations from patches to allow localizing defective areas without annotations during training.

A Lost Portrait of Father Giambattista Martini and a Letter from Antonio Crespi to Maria Antonia of Saxony

Thomas Liebsch

This contribution presents an episode that bears witness to the cosmopolitan culture of Eighteenth-Century Bologna: it focuses on a portrait of the Bolognese musicologist and Franciscan friar, Father Giambattista Martini, painted by Antonio Crespi. Once kept in Magdeburg, but now lost, the painting is plausibly linked to an unpublished letter sent by the painter to Princess Maria Antonia of Saxony, in which he mentions the commission for a portrait of the Bolognese friar, requested from Crespi by the electoral princess during her stay in Bologna during her trip to Italy (1772).

CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ART IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

SOCHICHIU, GRETA-CORNELIA , SAVIŢKAIA-BARAGHIN, IARÎNA

In the twentieth century, in the field of textile art there were exhibition events that caused major changes in the attitude of artists and the public towards the two-dimensional or three-dimensional textile art object. Throughout its evolution, the textile art has undergone transformations and turning points, in line with the dominant artistic trends and styles of the time. From the first manifestations in consecrated form, that of a two-dimensional decorative object made of textile fibers in specific weaving techniques, and until now it has oscillated one after the other between the status of first-rate art and applied art, being closely linked to the craft of weaving that preceded it.

Technical aesthetic in the works of Alberto Buri

Marwa Nizar Youssef, Monther Fadel Hassan

The artistic technique has an important role in the constructive analyzes of the plastic visual achievements according to the relationship of the artistic elements and the mechanisms of their operation with each other, so the artist deliberately shows the aesthetics of these techniques through his own artistic and technical style according to his conscious ability to move away from the classical traditions. The research consists of four chapters, the chapter included The first is on the methodological framework of the research, so the problem was summed up by the following question: What are the technical aesthetics in the works of Alberto Buri? As for its importance, it was represented by studying the works of the artist (Alberto Buri) for his stylistic and technical uniqueness among the artists of his era. As for the spatial borders (Europe and the United States of America), the temporal borders of the period (1949-1960). Among the results reached by the researcher: The (Buri) style was associated with the technique of existing objects, as it took the collection of dilapidated materials in order to liberate the artwork from all classical constraints and adopt contemporary techniques He mixed dyes with other materials to form different surfaces that were strange.

Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series): The Embodiment of Waste Values and Aesthetics

Gayle Matthias

Written from the perspective of practice-led research, this reflective case study rationalises and charts the production of ‘Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series)’—mixed media sculptures that embody notions of waste aesthetic, value and abjection. Integrating discourses surrounding waste theory and using the sink and plug as a metaphor to discuss Lacan’s theory of the objet petit a, the paper is presented as an autobiographical waste narrative. Production of a series of anatomical vacuum cleaners made from re-appropriated artwork found waste materials in the form of ‘pre-owned objects or materials’ and ‘by-products’ of a creative practice’, sit alongside crafted luxurious glass objects and speak of corporeal ageing, dysfunction and the domestic realm. Discarded objects take the form of car parts found in the non-places of the gutter. Through assemblage, these unique items’ ‘use-time’ is recontextualised and elevated as art objects viewed within a gallery arena.

PlatoSim: An end-to-end PLATO camera simulator for modelling high-precision space-based photometry

N. Jannsen, J. De Ridder, D. Seynaeve et al.

PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is the ESA M3 space mission dedicated to detect and characterise transiting exoplanets including information from the asteroseismic properties of their stellar hosts. The uninterrupted and high-precision photometry provided by space-borne instruments such as PLATO require long preparatory phases. An exhaustive list of tests are paramount to design a mission that meets the performance requirements, and as such, simulations are an indispensable tool in the mission preparation. To accommodate PLATO's need of versatile simulations prior to mission launch - that at the same time describe accurately the innovative but complex multi-telescope design - we here present the end-to-end PLATO simulator specifically developed for the purpose, namely PlatoSim. We show step-by-step the algorithms embedded into the software architecture of PlatoSim that allow the user to simulate photometric time series of CCD images and light curves in accordance to the expected observations of PLATO. In the context of the PLATO payload, a general formalism of modelling, end-to-end, incoming photons from the sky to the final measurement in digital units is discussed. We show the strong predictive power of PlatoSim through its diverse applicability and contribution to numerous working groups within the PLATO Mission Consortium. This involves the on-going mechanical integration and alignment, performance studies of the payload, the pipeline development and assessments of the scientific goals. PlatoSim is a state-of-the-art simulator that is able to produce the expected photometric observations of PLATO to a high level of accuracy. We demonstrate that PlatoSim is a key software tool for the PLATO mission in the preparatory phases until mission launch and prospectively beyond.

Transformation vs Tradition: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for Arts and Humanities

Zhengliang Liu, Yiwei Li, Qian Cao et al.

Recent advances in artificial general intelligence (AGI), particularly large language models and creative image generation systems have demonstrated impressive capabilities on diverse tasks spanning the arts and humanities. However, the swift evolution of AGI has also raised critical questions about its responsible deployment in these culturally significant domains traditionally seen as profoundly human. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the applications and implications of AGI for text, graphics, audio, and video pertaining to arts and the humanities. We survey cutting-edge systems and their usage in areas ranging from poetry to history, marketing to film, and communication to classical art. We outline substantial concerns pertaining to factuality, toxicity, biases, and public safety in AGI systems, and propose mitigation strategies. The paper argues for multi-stakeholder collaboration to ensure AGI promotes creativity, knowledge, and cultural values without undermining truth or human dignity. Our timely contribution summarizes a rapidly developing field, highlighting promising directions while advocating for responsible progress centering on human flourishing. The analysis lays the groundwork for further research on aligning AGI's technological capacities with enduring social goods.

Educational Implications and Application of Compassion Meditation as Liberal Arts Education

Jaewon Jeong

The purpose of this study was to explore the educational implications of compassion meditation as a liberal arts education course and to see how it can be designed as within the regular curriculum. Recent studies have shown that compassion meditation promotes positive emotions and pro-social behavior. Furthermore, it has been actively used in education beyond the field of psychotherapy. The educational implications of compassion meditation in higher education are threefold. First, compassion meditation can create an inner shift that allows for existential reflection on the self. Second, compassion meditation is a metacognitive training exercise that enhances the ability for one to see the big picture. Third, compassion meditation is an approach that enhances pro-social behavior by improving empathy and compassion. In addition, I presented pedagogical suggestions on how compassion meditation can be designed as a liberal arts education course in universities. The significance of this study is that it analyzed the educational implications of compassion meditation, which fosters positive emotions toward oneself and enhances empathy toward others. The study also explored how compassion meditation can be designed as a liberal arts education course in the context of a serious psychological crisis among young adults.

Poésie / Prophylaxie : éléments pour une histoire commune

Philippe Chométy

This study focuses on the ancient and abiding links between poetry and prophylaxis. These links are first of all thematic and historical: they are part of the traditional current of medical poetry. They are also based on the parenetic specificity of poetic discourse considered as a moral prophylaxis. Poetry thus appears as a means of hygiene for the soul: it is both a protection against the anguish of death and a "health regime" for the spirit. But the real origin of the links between poetry and prophylaxis goes back to the apotropaic powers of language.

Developing self-efficacy, mattering, and general well-being through community-based education in the rural area

A. Aziz, Moh Padil, Mujtahid Mujtahid et al.

This qualitative study aimed to explore the implementation of community-based education (CBE) in the village of Desa Karang Pandan, Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The CBE was conducted in order to educate the community members in information technology, Arabic language, Quran reading, Boyscout activities, and indigenous martial arts. Apart from that, the CBE was implemented to address specific communal issues, such as lack of self-efficacy, sense of mattering, and general well-being of the community members. Data was collected through observations and interviews along the CBE program, and analyzed by utilizing thematic analysis methods. Positive responses were shown in the interview results. They were represented by the frequent occurrences of themes such as improvement of mattering and self-efficacy, higher motivation to learn and the development of general well-being. Nevertheless, it is possible that the positive responses from the community members were caused by the novelty effect of the program. Further concerns and limitations are discussed in the end of this paper.

A typology of adaptive façades. An empirical study based on the morphology of glazed facades

Marcin Brzezicki

A building’s façade is its main interface with the external environment. Adaptive façade, one recent invention in the façade industry, has the capability to change its behaviour in real-time to respond to internal and/or external parameters, by means of materials, components, and systems. Among these, the adaptive shading and the façade glazing are two components that must fit together. This paper focuses on the spatial relationship between these components. It presents the results of the morphological analysis of façades with adaptive shading systems and the spatial relation between the adaptive shading system and the building’s glass envelope. To characterise this relation, we formulated two measures: depth and distance. The results revealed four types of such relations: (i) the shading elements are located outside the building’s glass envelope, (ii) they are covered by the glass envelope, (iii) they are located between the layers of the glazing façade, and (iv) they represent thin coatings that are flush with the surface of the glass. These results provide important insights into the emergence of new aesthetical trends in architecture, especially given the most recent technologies adopted in façades. In conclusion, we bring empirical evidence that the location of the shading system in relation to the glass envelope of a building is the key morphological feature that determines the extent of spatial transformation of the architectural structure on which such a system is installed.

Secrets of a Silent Miniaturist: Findings from a Technical Study of Miniatures Attributed to Isaac Oliver

Christine Slottved Kimbriel, Paola Ricciardi

An evidently accomplished draughtsman, Isaac Oliver (circa 1565–1617) remains an enigmatic artist in many respects. While Nicholas Hilliard’s treatise on the art of limning provides considerable insight into his material use, techniques, and self-perception, no equivalent documentary evidence survives from Oliver’s hand, and many questions regarding his training, approach, and oeuvre have yet to be answered. This article presents key findings from the collaborative and technically focused research project “Secrets of a Silent Miniaturist: Technical Analysis of Isaac Oliver’s Miniatures”, undertaken by the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge (UK). The project aims to shed light on Oliver’s artistic practice through the detailed, technical study of a representative selection of his surviving miniatures, investigated through an up-to-date, non-invasive analytical and technical lens. The article discusses the discovery of near-invisible changes to compositions implemented during the initial execution, differences in execution and later history between two versions of a portrait of Henry Frederick Prince of Wales, the first identification in a miniature of a rare mercury-based white pigment whose deterioration led to later campaigns of repainting, and the use of a hitherto unacknowledged range of pigments and media in Oliver’s landscape miniatures that raises further questions about Oliver’s connection with artistic traditions on the Continent.

THE MECHANISM OF DOCUMENTING THE ARTS AND ITS ROLE IN PRESERVING HERITAGE USING MODERN TECHNIQUES “FIELD STUDY ON FOLKLORE MUSEUMS”

Walaa Ahmed

The research presented the target value of the art documentation mechanism, and its role in preserving the heritage using modern technologies, as the arts in general, and the visual arts in particular, have a significant role in the advancement of societies, and stand strictly about what and the mechanism for defining arts within societies, and the role of the arts In view of the technical development day after day, and afternoon after era, modern technologies have a role and importance that cannot be underestimated in the field of traditional arts in a great depth, and if we study folklore museums, we will find that they contain many and many aesthetic, artistic and plastic values that It deals with and expresses the aspects of social, cultural and civilizational change within societies, and we also found that every environment is subject to a set of factors that shaped its human and intellectual manifestations of a culture. This is what attributed us to the importance of documenting all this, going back to the foundations, as well as the scientific methodology that makes us preserve our heritage by using the latest technologies of what our ancestors left us in depth, thinking, and building our present, and then we advance our future by joining forces, private and public institutions to form a shield Protective against external intellectual invasion, the next enemy is the enemy of ideas, the attacker of civilizations, and science, and in order for the documentation mechanism to be optimized, all technical, technical and thematic aspects must be taken into account to include the important issues in heritage museums in specialized electronic archives by creating databases and electronic websites With the use of collecting modern information, in image and sound, to display every information in its place for easy transmission and retrieval when needed; In addition to making documentary films and showing them on heritage preservation sites, which necessitates establishing a group of sites concerned with heritage preservation on several levels.
