Athletic ability, performance, and character: A hierarchical examination of prospective college athlete evaluation and the function of recruiting as institutional work

Drew Swinney, Chris Corr, Sarah Stokowski et al.

Intercollegiate athletics recruiting is depicted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as the “lifeblood” of college sport. Given the correlation between recruiting success and winning in college football specifically, and the relationship between winning and revenue generation, NCAA member institutions place the utmost significance on football recruiting. Within the context of football recruiting as strategic institutional work, college football coaches promulgate institutionalized logics through the indoctrination of prospective college athletes. To further conceptualize institutional work and logics in the recruitment of prospective college athletes, the present study sought to examine the evaluative factors college football coaches prioritize when recruiting prospective college athletes. Semi-structured interviews with 10 football coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision member institutions during the 2023 college football season reveal the strategic emphasis placed on football ability and football character in the recruitment of prospective college athletes.

Content of the educational component on studying tourism enterprises in market conditions

V. Todorov, Serhii Moskaliuk, Viktor Khomutov

The relevance of this problem is greatly increased by the intense phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war, after which our country will begin the process of recovery. And here, tourism and recreational activities should play a key role, especially in the border regions through which resources for recovery should be supplied. In this context, Odesa region, and especially its southwestern part (the Danube and Dniester rivers), should be given special attention. The working environment of a travel agency is created by a number of conditions. The economic conditions of the general environment are the general state of the economic system in which the organization operates. Particularly important conditions for business that determine the demand for travel services are overall economic growth, inflation, interest rates, and unemployment. Technological conditions - refer to the methods of transforming resources into tourism goods and services. Although technology is applied within an organization, it is the overall environment that determines its availability and nature. The technologies that support the tourism industry are divided into three areas: transportation technology, hotel and restaurant equipment, and communication technology. Political and legal conditions of the general environment are related to state control and regulation of the tourism business and cooperation between business and public administration. The state has certain intentions about the strategy and plans for the development and functioning of the tourism industry. The travel company, for its part, is able to determine the acceptable limits of its actions and adopt methods of protecting its interests in the legal field. Social conditions are stable, acceptable norms, systems of social rules, and spiritual values. Among social conditions, demographic conditions have the greatest impact on the tourism industry. WTO research shows that population growth rates have a direct proportional impact on the number of tourists. Increasing life expectancy helps to attract older people to tourism. Natural conditions - seasonal restrictions in the organization of tours and, as a result, seasonal fluctuations in demand for tourism services, which in turn affect the nature and volume of tourist activity. Entrepreneurship in tourism is a key component of the economic training of future professionals in this field. This scientific discipline combines economic and spatial (geographical) aspects of the development of tourism and recreation. This combination of planned impact on higher education students, which has been tested in the training of tourism specialists at Izmail State University of Humanities and Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, will lead to the acquisition of a new quality of competence. That is, our future specialists will meet the requirements of the market and help in the post-war recovery of Ukraine.

Izolda Khasaia E-mail: izolda.khasaia@atsu.edu.ge Associate Professor, Akaki Tsereteli State University Kutaisi, Georgia https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9689-4277   Tamta Demetradze E-mail: tamta.demetradze@atsu.edu.ge PhD candidate, Akaki Tsereteli State University Kutaisi, Georgia   Abstract: Green tourism is the business of providing recreation and related services that are not harmful to the environment of a regional area. It promotes environmentally friendly and sustainable practices throughout the tourism value chain and minimizes the negative impacts of tourism on the environment. The purpose of the presented research is to familiarize with the practice of green tourism development in the Imereti region and determine the existing challenges. Research has shown that there are many examples in the business sector of combining sustainable practices and modern technologies in the tourism industry. The paper includes examples of the current practice of green tourism included in the research of various successful businesses in the Imereti region of Georgia (hotel, hotel complex, wine tourism destinations (cellars), administration of protected areas of Imereti caves, cultural tourism facility), which emphasize various aspects of the principles of green tourism. Small hotels are taking energy-saving measures, including reducing the frequency of towel changes and closing certain parts of the building during off-peak seasons to save energy. However, power outages are a problem because high voltage generators are not environmentally friendly. To solve this problem, there is a growing interest in alternative energy sources such as solar panels. Small family-run wineries are an example of successful ecotourism through organic viticulture and low-intervention wine production, focused on protecting the environment through waste management. They also offer tourists authentic cuisine, local organic produce and accommodation in a green environment. It is worth noting the initiative, which includes the strengthening of landslide-prone slopes by planting fruit trees, which naturally stabilizes the soil with roots and prevents environmental degradation. Creating additional green areas for tourists to relax and enjoy nature is another practice adopted by the respondents. This is in line with the growing emphasis on sustainability and the environment. The development of green tourism faces many interrelated challenges that require the joint efforts of the government, the private sector and civil society. Despite the problems related to waste management, wastewater, financial etc. Developing practices and growing awareness among industry representatives indicate a good future for green tourism in Imereti. Keywords: green tourism, sustainable development, waste management, environmental protection, wine cellars, Imereti   JEL classification: Z320

A new paradigm for sport education programs: an equity-minded and anti-ism framework

J. Cooper, Ajhanai C. I. Keaton, Marta N. Mack et al.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this manuscript is to examine the implications of the current ideological underpinnings of sport education programs (SEPs) in the United States (U.S.) and present a new equity-minded and anti-ism sport education (EASE) framework that reflects a paradigm shift towards equity-mindedness, anti-ism, cultural responsiveness, inclusive excellence, and transformational leadership. The sport industry has transformed from modest recreational activities for leisure entertainment at the local levels into a multi-billion-dollar global corporatized industry with far-reaching economic, political and sociocultural impacts. Despite the growth in popularity of SEPs, a major area of concern is the lack of critical reflection on their sociopolitical and cultural origins of the curriculum and corresponding metrics of success. Thus, we argue current SEPs (e.g. sport management, sport administration, sport leadership, sport business, parks and recreation, and sport entertainment, hospitality, and tourism) perpetuate colorblind racism, sexism, and classism based on their philosophical foundations. In an effort to reflect a responsiveness to an increasingly global and multicultural sport industry, we present a new EASE framework for preparing professionals to ignite transformational change in and through sport in the twenty-first century.

The Impact of COVID–19 on the Level and Structure of Employment in European Union Countries

M. Markowska, A. Sokołowski

The paper proposes methods that can be used to evaluate the changes in one year of any measurable phenomenon based on how it performed in previous years. The following economic sections are considered: Agriculture, forestry and fishing/Industry/Construction/Wholesale and retail trade, transport, accommodation and food services/Information and communication/Financial and insurance activities/Real estate activities/Professional, scientific and technical activities, including administrative and support services/Public administration, defence, education, human health and social work/Arts, entertainment and recreation; other service activities; activities of household and extra‑territorial organisations and bodies. The paper proposes a new method – called The Triple 2 Rule – to identify changes in employment time series. Trends and autoregressive models are estimated for the period 2008–2019, and 2020 forecasts are calculated. The difference between the forecasted and observed values for 2020 is treated as a measure of the impact of COVID–19. Dynamic cluster analysis based on 2008–2020 data is the second approach. The characteristics and changes in the composition of dynamic clusters give a picture of the impact of 2020. These changes can be considered to have been caused – at least partially – by the COVID–19 pandemic.

How does COVID-19 fear affect job insecurity and stress for hospitality employees? A moderated mediation model for age and financial status

Engin Üngüren , Serdar Arslan

This study aims to understand the integrated effect of COVID-19 fear, age, financial situation, and job insecurity on the perceived stress of employees of five-star hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic by proposing a moderated mediation model. A survey was administered to 631 hotel employees working in 22 different five-star hotels in Alanya, Turkey. Moderator, mediation, and moderated mediation relationships were tested with the SPSS macro PROCESS. It was found that COVID-19 fear has both direct and interactive effects on stress and job insecurity, and the indirect effect of COVID-19 fear on stress through job insecurity varies according to the age of the employees and their financial status. The results, which contribute to a better understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on hospitality employees, point out the importance of financial support (organisational and governmental) and transparent communication between the management and employees in times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also suggested that hotels should review their unpaid leave policies. The limitations of the study are discussed at the end.

Young Employees – Work Satisfaction And Motivation

Georgiana-Ionela Bădulescu

Job satisfaction refers to a set of positive reactions of an employee towards his job. This implies not only economic yield but also social and personal performance, which means that the employee benefits from participating in work activities and also from obtaining personal advantages such as remuneration, a stable job and promotion prospects. Motivation refers to all the incentives and impulses that can push somebody to do something or to aspire to certain goals. This study is based on a research whose aims are to identify what satisfies and what motivates young people at the workplace. The sample consists of 151 young employees with ages ranging from 15 to 29 years old. The concept of job satisfaction is seen in literature and by both employers and employees as a state of wellbeing or a positive mood which results from combining the right amount of employee opinion, work climate and proper motivating management. The resulting work and level of satisfaction is directly influenced by the relationship with the management and co-workers and also by the work conditions. In terms of the stimulating part of motivation, it is shown that employees are feeling satisfied when their merits are considered, when they are rewarded accordingly and when they feel motivated for their next activities.

Impacts of mega-events on destination competitiveness and corruption perception in South American countries

Thays Cristina Domareski-Ruiz , Adriana Fumi Chim-Miki , Edar Añaña et al.

Tourism destination competitiveness is a multidimensional concept that is widely studied in the academic literature. The corruption affects countries' business environment, generating negative image and barriers, so hindering its' ability to compete as a global player. This paper analyses this relation in the tourism industry in a sample of South American countries through a comparison within a five-year period based on the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) with the variation of Corruption Perception Index (CPI). An exploratory analysis to verify the upward and downward in these monitors was performed. The relation between TTCI and CPI was verified by a regression analysis. This research contributes directly to addressing a topic rarely explored in the tourism area, the influence of corruption perception in destination competitiveness. The results confirm that corruption perception impacts on tourism competitiveness of countries, but in presence of strong sources of tourism attractiveness, such as Mega events, this relation was reduced.

Relationship between intangible resources, absorptive capacities and export performance

Alexandra França, Orlando Lima Rua

The new paradigm of today’s world economy is characterized by the mobility of production resources and the ability to combine them in an efficient way. The strategic management research has recognized the importance of studying the companies’ resources and capabilities and its usefulness to achieve competitive advantage. This perspective is consistent with the Resource-Based View (RBV) and with the Dynamic Capabilities View (DCV). The source of competitive advantage is much more correlated with intangible resources, since these are rarer and socially complex, making their imitation difficult. Consequently, intangible resources are considered strategic resources, since it allows creating perceived value by the customer, outperforming the competition, competing in new markets and being use in a wide range of products and services. On the other hand, the processes for absorbing external knowledge became an essential element for firms to adapt to changes in the competitive environment. Thus knowledge plays an important role in firms’ internationalization process. Building on well-established theories, our research explores the influence of intangible resources and absorptive capacities in export performance of Portuguese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) of footwear associated to the Portuguese Footwear, Components and Leather Goods Association (APICCAPS). Based on survey data from 42 firms, our empirical results indicate that globally intangible resources and absorptive capacity have a positive and significant influence on export performance. On one hand, the intangible resources that most contribute to this end are reputational resources, access to financial resources and relational resources, and on the other hand the absorptive capacities that most contribute to export performance are exploitation of knowledge, transformation of knowledge and general knowledge acquisition.
