Register, Genre, and Style

D. Biber, Susan Conrad

This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyse them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis. Each chapter ends with three types of activities: reflection and review activities, analysis activities, and larger project ideas.

Measuring economic policy uncertainty in China

Yundong Huang, Paul Luk

We construct a new monthly index of Economic Policy Uncertainty for China in 2000–2018 based on Chinese newspapers. Different from the existing index, ours uses information from multiple local newspapers, and foreshadows declines in equity price, employment and output. Media censorship does not seem to have qualitative impact to our index. Moreover, we develop a daily uncertainty index and several policy-specific uncertainty indices for public use.

Politicization and Polarization in COVID-19 News Coverage

P. S. Hart, Sedona Chinn, S. Soroka

This study examines the level of politicization and polarization in COVID-19 news in U.S. newspapers and televised network news from March to May 2020. Using multiple computer-assisted content analytic approaches, we find that newspaper coverage is highly politicized, network news coverage somewhat less so, and both newspaper and network news coverage are highly polarized. We find that politicians appear in newspaper coverage more frequently than scientists, whereas politicians and scientists are more equally featured in network news. We suggest that the high degree of politicization and polarization in initial COVID-19 coverage may have contributed to polarization in U.S. COVID-19 attitudes.

Measuring Climate Policy Uncertainty

K. Gavriilidis

This study presents a new measure of uncertainty related to climate policy, based on news from major US newspapers. The Climate Policy Uncertainty (CPU) index spikes near important events related to climate policy, such as new emissions legislation, global strikes about climate change and President’s statements about climate policy, among other developments. Our findings suggest that climate policy uncertainty has a strong and negative effect on CO2 emissions.

“A rape is a rape is a rape” – A qualitative content analysis of male rape frames in UK print media

Maria F. Grub

Using data of N = 70 articles from newspapers in the United Kingdom, this study explores whether UK print media of both broadsheet and tabloid press make use of issue-specific frames (Entman, 1993) in the reporting on male rape. Current UK legislation does not recognize women as perpetrators of male rape; this was also reflected in the majority of articles addressing male rape. A total of nine frames were identified following Mayring’s (2015) approach to qualitative content analysis. The frames can be differentiated into situational, victim, and perpetrator frames. The reporting includes (male) rape myths based on sex stereotypes placing perpetrators and victims in unequal power dynamics. In line with previous research, the findings can be related to sex-role socialization, which places men and women into stereotypical categories of masculinity and femininity. In addition, sex-role socialization is expanded by matters of sexual orientation: Stereotypes of femininity are projected on homosexual men and the victims are placed in a subordinate role compared to the perpetrators. The comparison of tabloid and broadsheet press shows that both portray male rape similarly. However, tabloids put greater emphasis on entertainment and use ways that are more in touch with the audience to illustrate male rape.

Mood Analysis of Utterances in Indonesia’s Covid-19 Vaccine Article in Online Newspaper

Rahma Yunita Putri, Malikatul Laila

This study examines the MOOD analysis of interpersonal meaning in articles in online newspapers about the covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to explain the formula of MOOD analysis realized in grammar and to describe the speakers' mood in the application of the MOOD analysis in Indonesia's covid-19 vaccine article from online newspaper. The main focus of this research is on descriptive text articles and MOOD structure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, the author uses observation documentation as a technique to obtain and measure data. The data were obtained by applying the theory of Gerot and Wignell (1994). The researcher found 259 clauses from six texts which became data taken from various online news sources. In the formula, there are various types such as Subject + Finite (Tense), Subject + Finite (Do), Subject + Finite (Modal), Subject + Finite (Have) and Subject + Finite (To be). The most commonly found category is the use of Finite (Tense). In the mood of the speaker, it is found that the speaker expresses certainty, possibility, uncertainty, obligation and advice. What most of the speakers said was certainty. In the analysis also found several categories of modalities, which after that can be included in the degree of modality, namely high, medium, and low. Because the limitations of this study are in a declarative, all clauses are statements that function to convey information from the author to the reader.

During the Anti-Japanese war period, Comparison of the newspaper distribution of the Communist Party of China between in the Shanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border area and the Kuomintang area

Du Yifan

The “Lugou bridge Incident” broke out on July 7, 1937. In order to save the country from subjugation, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party carried out the second cooperation. This cooperation is non party cooperation, and there are great differences in political, military and ruling regions. In response to these differences, the Communist Party of China adopted different newspaper distribution models and public opinion management modes. Based on the historical and environmental background of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, this paper collects the distributing data of Party newspapers and establishes the publishing database of Party newspapers of the Communist Party of China during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. With the help of big data analysis technology, from six aspects of distributing policy, distributing management, distributing subject, distributing object, distributing target and distributing network, this paper studies the distributing mode and its differences of Party newspapers and periodicals in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border area and the areas ruled by the Kuomintang during that period. Thus enriching the study of Party newspapers and periodicals in this period.

The ecological discourse analysis of news discourse based on deep learning from the perspective of ecological philosophy.

Biyun Zhang, Shanti Chandran Sandaran, Jing Feng

Recently, ecological damage and environmental pollution have become increasingly serious. Experts in various fields have started to study related issues from diverse points of view. To prevent the accelerated deterioration of the ecological environment, ecolinguistics emerged. Eco-critical discourse analysis is one of the important parts of ecolinguistics research, that is, it is a critical discourse analysis of the use of language from the perspective of the language's ecological environment. Firstly, an ecological tone and modality system are constructed from an ecological perspective. Under the guidance of the ecological philosophy of "equality, harmony, and symbiosis", this study conducts an ecological discourse analysis on the Sino-US trade friction reports, aiming to present the similarities and differences between the two newspapers' trade friction discourses and to reveal the ecological significance of international ecological factors in the discourse. Secondly, this method establishes a vector expression of abstract words based on emotion dictionary resources and introduces emotion polarity and part-of-speech features of words. Then the word vector is formed into the text feature matrix, which is used as the input of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, and the Back Propagation algorithm is adopted to train the model. Finally, in the light of the trained CNN model, the unlabeled news is predicted, and the experimental results are analyzed. The results reveal that during the training process of Chinese and English datasets, the accuracy of the training set can reach nearly 100%, and the loss rate can be reduced to 0. On the test set, the classification accuracy of Chinese text can reach 83%, while that of English text can reach 90%, and the experimental results are ideal. This study provides an explanatory approach for ecological discourse analysis on the news reports of Sino-US trade frictions and has certain guiding significance for the comparative research on political news reports under different ideologies between China and the United States.

Soviet financial «aid» to military personnel in the western regions of Ukraine after world war II

Liliia Drobina

The article deals with the provision of material aid by the state after World War II to the front-line soldiers of the western regions of Ukraine and at the same time the introduction of incredibly high taxes. To understand this society means in many ways to find approaches to solving modern problems. And although Soviet historiography presented this topic as a significant achievement, at present, all these «pluses» are perceived as components of the seizure of Ukrainian lands. The largest item of financial expenses was the payment of aid, and it was carried out at the expense of the republican budget on a monthly basis. At the same time, under the guise of aid to the post-war economy, the Soviet government, by providing insignificant aid, subsequently formed a new source of its income. We speak about compulsory grocery deliveries and taxes. The main ones were introduced in the USSR in 1944: agricultural, military, single and small-family (for absence of children in the family). As a result of these innovations, the share of income from taxation of the population in the budget has almost tripled. However, in order to show the «advantages» of the Soviet way of life, a group of beneficiaries who were provided with benefits was also defined. The next aid guaranteed by the government of the Ukrainian SSR was lending for household amenities. The difficult financial situation of families was found in all regions and most families were declared insolvent. It should not be forgotten, however, that a loan policy had been initiated. At first, the state pretended to provide financial aid, and soon unilaterally set the size of the loan in the national plan. For those who worked, it was a monthly salary, which was deducted by shares on a monthly basis during the year. About the «voluntary» desire to give funds was written in the newspapers about loans. Annual loans, which were carried out by the state, did not contribute to the improvement of the material well-being of Ukrainians. The patriotic heroics of the restoration era took over the problems of a particular person, was gradually accumulating in Ukrainian society in the late 1940s – early 1950s. After destroying and driving millions of people into the Gulag camps, Stalin forced the majority and workers to come to terms with a minimum of stability and prosperity.

Arthur Danto and Art world

I. N. Nekhaeva

The American philosopher Arthur Danto left a bright mark in the history of contemporary art as his analyst, critic and even artist. In the mid-1960s, Arthur Danto first introduced the analytical method to the field of philosophy of art in order to evaluate the heuristic capacities and ways of applying analytical tools to the art. Deep vision into the very essence of the transformations that shook the art of the 1960s, and keen interest in the work of artists of conceptual pop art, it’s all pushed Arthur Danto to study the problems of language boundaries in the art. The concept of Art as the independent World with its laws and transformations allowed Arthur Danto not only to eliminate the problem of definition of art, but also to present a holistic picture of the development of art of the late 20th century

The conflict between the "fanatics" and the "heroic police": memories of canudos in the newspapers and in cordel verses in pará state, brazil (1897-1940)

Patrícia dos Santos Lieuthier Freitas, Geraldo Magella de Menezes Neto

This article proposes an analysis from the memories of the Canudos War conveyed in the Pará state’s periodicals A Província do Pará and Folha do Norte in the year of 1897, and cordel booklets História de Antônio Conselheiro (Campanha de Canudos, narração completa) by Arinos de Belém. The periodical discourse and the cordel about Antonio Conselheiro and his followers and about the participation of the Military Police of Pará was analyzed, observing the permanences and changes in relation to the image constructed on these individuals. It can be seen from the research that these media vehicles reproduced a pejorative vision of the blessed and the Canudenses and portrayed the troops as heroic, sustaining the same discourse that it was necessary to defeat Canudos.

A comparative content analysis of media reporting of sports betting in Australia: lessons for public health media advocacy approaches

Jennifer L. David, Samantha L. Thomas, Melanie Randle et al.

Abstract Background Harmful gambling is a significant public health issue. There has been widespread discussion in the Australian media about the extent and impact of sports betting on the Australian community, particularly relating to young men and children. Given the role that the media plays in influencing policy change and political agendas, and the acknowledgement that media based advocacy is a fundamental component of successful advocacy campaigns, this research aimed to investigate how different stakeholder groups discuss sports betting within the Australian print media. The study uses this information to provide recommendations to guide public health media advocacy approaches. Methods A quantitative content analysis of print media articles was conducted during two significant Parliamentary Inquiries about sports betting - (1) The Joint Select Committee Inquiry into the Advertising and Promotion of Gambling Services in Sport (2012/2013), and (2) 'The Review of Illegal Offshore Wagering (2015/2016). A total of 241 articles from 12 daily Australian newspapers were analysed. Statistical analysis was used to compare frequency of, and changes in, themes, voices and perspectives over time. Results Discussions about the marketing and communication of sports betting was a main theme in media reporting (n = 165, 68.5%), while discussions about gambling reform decreased significantly across the two time periods (p < 0.0001). The presence of sports betting industry (p < 0.0001), sporting code (p < 0.0001) and public health expert (p = 0.001) voices all increased significantly across the two time periods. There were very few (n = 11, 4.6%) voices from those who had experienced gambling harm. Finally, while there were significantly fewer articles taking the perspective that regulation changes were needed to protect vulnerable sub-populations (p < 0.0001), articles that had a neutral perspective about the need for regulation change increased significantly across the two time periods (p < 0.0001). Discussion and conclusions Mapping the media reporting of sports betting is important in developing effective public health advocacy approaches. This study indicates that discussions about the marketing strategies utilised by the sports betting industry was still a main theme in media articles. However, discussions relating to sports betting reforms, in particular to protect individuals who may be vulnerable to the harm associated with these products and their promotional strategies (for example children and young men) decreased during the time periods. Public health advocates may seek to address the decrease in media reports about reform by developing clear evidence-based messages about why regulatory reform is needed, as well as the potential consequences of not implementing reforms. Working with organisations to build capacity for people who have experienced gambling harm may help ensure that individuals with a lived experience of harm have an increased voice in the media.

Poor replication validity of biomedical association studies reported by newspapers.

Estelle Dumas-Mallet, Andy Smith, Thomas Boraud et al.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the replication validity of biomedical association studies covered by newspapers. METHODS:We used a database of 4723 primary studies included in 306 meta-analysis articles. These studies associated a risk factor with a disease in three biomedical domains, psychiatry, neurology and four somatic diseases. They were classified into a lifestyle category (e.g. smoking) and a non-lifestyle category (e.g. genetic risk). Using the database Dow Jones Factiva, we investigated the newspaper coverage of each study. Their replication validity was assessed using a comparison with their corresponding meta-analyses. RESULTS:Among the 5029 articles of our database, 156 primary studies (of which 63 were lifestyle studies) and 5 meta-analysis articles were reported in 1561 newspaper articles. The percentage of covered studies and the number of newspaper articles per study strongly increased with the impact factor of the journal that published each scientific study. Newspapers almost equally covered initial (5/39 12.8%) and subsequent (58/600 9.7%) lifestyle studies. In contrast, initial non-lifestyle studies were covered more often (48/366 13.1%) than subsequent ones (45/3718 1.2%). Newspapers never covered initial studies reporting null findings and rarely reported subsequent null observations. Only 48.7% of the 156 studies reported by newspapers were confirmed by the corresponding meta-analyses. Initial non-lifestyle studies were less often confirmed (16/48) than subsequent ones (29/45) and than lifestyle studies (31/63). Psychiatric studies covered by newspapers were less often confirmed (10/38) than the neurological (26/41) or somatic (40/77) ones. This is correlated to an even larger coverage of initial studies in psychiatry. Whereas 234 newspaper articles covered the 35 initial studies that were later disconfirmed, only four press articles covered a subsequent null finding and mentioned the refutation of an initial claim. CONCLUSION:Journalists preferentially cover initial findings although they are often contradicted by meta-analyses and rarely inform the public when they are disconfirmed.
