Graphic Notation Activities in Early Childhood Music Teaching

Zhou Lei, S. Peh, Zhang Ming et al.

This study explores the use of graphic notation in early childhood music education and its impact on children’s learning and development. Using semi-structured interviews with four preschool music teachers and classroom observations, the research identifies key benefits of graphic notation in both song teaching and music appreciation contexts. Graphic notation concretizes abstract musical concepts, supports creativity and self-expression, accommodates diverse learning needs, enhances engagement through multisensory experiences, and promotes holistic development across cognitive, social, and emotional domains. The findings highlight that graphic notation functions as a developmentally appropriate pedagogical tool, enabling young children to actively construct musical understanding rather than passively receive instruction. These insights provide practical implications for music educators, curriculum designers, and early childhood practitioners seeking to foster inclusive, engaging, and creative music learning experiences.

Vasyl Frytsiuk, Iurii Kshyvak, Iryna Baranovska et al.

The increasing digitalisation of education has significantly impacted music teacher training, integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) and online platforms into pedagogical practice. This study explores the role of digital ecosystems, particularly social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok, in shaping new approaches to music education. These platforms function not only as entertainment hubs but also as powerful educational tools that foster interactive learning, expand access to high-quality musical instruction, and engage students in dynamic ways. We analyse both the theoretical and practical aspects of ICT integration in music teacher education, highlighting how digital tools transform teaching methodologies. Special attention is given to social media as an educational resource, evaluating its benefits—such as accessibility, engagement, and diverse content—while also addressing challenges like quality control and information overload. Through expert analysis and case studies, we assess the effectiveness of blended learning models that combine traditional and digital education. As a result, we propose a structured model for integrating social media and online tools into music teacher training, aiming to enhance interactive engagement and professional development. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the modernisation of music education, offering practical recommendations for embedding ICT and social media into curricula. By leveraging the potential of digital learning environments, future music teachers can not only adapt to contemporary pedagogical challenges but also develop innovative teaching methodologies tailored to the needs of digital-native students.

Literacy Transmission for the Tuba Playing Techniques of the Chinese Folk Song "Ga Da Mei Lin"

Nian Xing, Weerayut Seekhunlio

By exploring the literacy transmission practices to perform Mongolian music on the tuba, this study aims to provide insight into part of the process of adapting a traditional folk song, Ga Da Mei Lin, of China, for tuba performance. It explores the ways Mongolian long-song techniques like breath control, glissando, and rhythmic flexibility are translated through the tuba by situating their study within an ethnomusicological framework that considers the integration of oral tradition and musical literacy. The study underscores the necessity of a dual approach of oral transmission and notation-based formal instruction in conservatory contexts to ensure both cultural authenticity and technical precision in the performance of Ga Da Mei Lin. These findings demonstrate how this hybrid pedagogical model enhances folk music teaching, contributes to the transmission of Mongolian cultural heritage, and facilitates the expressive potential of the tuba in conveying Mongolian folk aesthetics. This research demonstrates the multifaceted, inherent collaboration between folk and contemporary music, adding to both cross-cultural aspects of music education and modern brass performance practice.

Attentive Reasoning Queries: A Systematic Method for Optimizing Instruction-Following in Large Language Models

Bar Karov, Dor Zohar, Yam Marcovitz

We present Attentive Reasoning Queries (ARQs), a novel structured reasoning approach that significantly improves instruction-following in Large Language Models through domain-specialized reasoning blueprints. While LLMs demonstrate remarkable capabilities across diverse tasks, they often fail to maintain adherence to complex, use-case-specific instructions during multi-turn conversations, presenting challenges for business-critical applications. ARQs address this limitation by guiding LLMs through systematic reasoning steps with targeted queries that reinstate critical instructions and facilitate intermediate reasoning throughout the completion process. In extensive testing within Parlant, our framework for reliable customer-facing agents in which ARQs were born out of necessity, they achieved a 90.2% success rate across 87 test scenarios, outperforming both Chain-of-Thought reasoning (86.1%) and direct response generation (81.5%). ARQs showed particular strength in addressing persistent failure modes like guideline re-application and hallucination prevention. Our analysis also revealed that ARQs can potentially be more computationally efficient than free-form reasoning when carefully designed. These findings demonstrate that structured reasoning approaches provide effective mechanisms for controlling how LLMs process information and make decisions in complex scenarios.

A case study of translating sonifications across musical cultures for an educational application

Chris M. Harrison, James W. Trayford, Arron George et al.

Sonification can be part of educational resources that can be accessible to those who prefer, or require, non-visual learning methods. Furthermore, sonification can contribute to an engaging multi-sensory learning experience, which are known to benefit general learners. Whilst some sonification can be relatively agnostic to musical culture, many sonifications are subject to culturally influenced choices, such as the chosen harmonies, rhythmic structures, and instrumentation. This is important when considering how universally inclusive and relatable sonification-based educational resources will be. Here we present a case study of translating a sonification-based educational show about the Solar System, that was originally designed with influences from Euro-American (Western-classical) music, to be more culturally relevant to the Caribbean region. We describe the motivation, approach, some of the challenges, and the initial feedback of the resulting output of the project. Finally, we provide reflections on the importance of further work exploring how educational sonifications can transcend international borders and musical cultures.

Real-world Music Plagiarism Detection With Music Segment Transcription System

Seonghyeon Go

As a result of continuous advances in Music Information Retrieval (MIR) technology, generating and distributing music has become more diverse and accessible. In this context, interest in music intellectual property protection is increasing to safeguard individual music copyrights. In this work, we propose a system for detecting music plagiarism by combining various MIR technologies. We developed a music segment transcription system that extracts musically meaningful segments from audio recordings to detect plagiarism across different musical formats. With this system, we compute similarity scores based on multiple musical features that can be evaluated through comprehensive musical analysis. Our approach demonstrated promising results in music plagiarism detection experiments, and the proposed method can be applied to real-world music scenarios. We also collected a Similar Music Pair (SMP) dataset for musical similarity research using real-world cases. The dataset are publicly available.

Predictive Controlled Music

Midhun T. Augustine

This paper presents a new approach to algorithmic composition, called predictive controlled music (PCM), which combines model predictive control (MPC) with music generation. PCM uses dynamic models to predict and optimize the music generation process, where musical notes are computed in a manner similar to an MPC problem by optimizing a performance measure. A feedforward neural network-based assessment function is used to evaluate the generated musical score, which serves as the objective function of the PCM optimization problem. Furthermore, a recurrent neural network model is employed to capture the relationships among the variables in the musical notes, and this model is then used to define the constraints in the PCM. Similar to MPC, the proposed PCM computes musical notes in a receding-horizon manner, leading to feedback controlled prediction. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the PCM generation method.

An Analysis of Social Action in Ketadu Mara Traditional Music Activities in Sabu Raijua Regency through Max Weber’s Perspective

Makdalena Yuniati Hege Udju, Udi Utomo

The traditional music art of Ketadu Mara in Sabu Regency possesses a distinctive sound and song lyrics derived from everyday life. This study aims to examine the musical activities of Ketadu Mara through Max Weber’s social action theory. As a cultural heritage of the Sabu community, Ketadu Mara holds a significant role as a social practice rich in symbolic meanings, cultural values, and social functions. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with phenomenological and sociological approaches. Data were collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with local artists and cultural community members in Ledeana Village, which serves as a center for preserving Ketadu Mara. The findings reveal that Ketadu Mara’s musical activities reflect two dominant types of social action according to Weber: traditional action, which is inherited across generations without formal instruction, and value-rational action, driven by beliefs in cultural values, ancestral reverence, and spiritual devotion. Beyond serving as entertainment and a means of cultural preservation, Ketadu Mara also functions as a medium for symbolic communication, identity formation, and education for younger generations. Thus, Ketadu Mara plays a crucial role in strengthening social solidarity and sustaining local cultural existence amidst the tides of change.

Vox Humana of War: Ukrainian Art Music as a Mode of Resistance (2022–24)

Tukova Iryna

Since 2014, when the Russian war against Ukraine began, and especially after the full-scale invasion started, numerous cultural actions have emerged as acts of Ukrainian cultural resistance. Resistance studies are characterized by their interdisciplinarity, enabling the application of their methodologies across various fields. At the heart of resistance is a refusal to accept oppression. It has been observed that, during the war in Ukraine, composers and their creative works have been resisting both the wartime circumstances and the political narratives propagated by Russia. Generally, artistic creativity stands against the violence and death inherent in war, generating new meanings that reflect and capture the emotions, desires, and hopes of Ukrainians. This article examines theories of resistance to provide a framework for analyzing compositions dedicated to the theme of war, and explores the mode of resistance in Ukrainian art music. Specifically, I focus on the composition Vox Humana (2023) by Roman Grygoriv, written for an MRLS BM-27 Uragan missile and chamber orchestra. Uniquely, this work uses a missile fragment as a musical instrument, illustrating a meaning-making process within the resistance narrative that remains deeply relevant to Ukrainians today.

Tactile Melodies: A Desk-Mounted Haptics for Perceiving Musical Experiences

Raj Varshith Moora, Gowdham Prabhakar

This paper introduces a novel interface for experiencing music through haptic impulses to the palm of the hand. It presents a practical implementation of the system exploring the realm of musical haptics through the translation of MIDI data from a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) into haptic sensations, from a set of haptic actuators, in real-time. It also includes a suitable music-to-haptic mapping strategy to translate notes from musical instruments to haptic feedback. The haptic actuators, placed strategically on the palmar surface of the hand allowed users to perceive music and were able to identify melody and rhythm of different musical compositions. A pilot user study conducted intended to assess the accuracy of the interface by testing the participants to select the correct audio presentation from the haptic presentation of the same musical composition. It presents a comparative study, differentiating between those with prior musical background and those without, in identifying the correct audio counterpart solely through haptic inputs. This pilot study delves into how users perceive and interpret haptic feedback within the context of musical compositions. The study showed promising results in enriching our understanding of user responses to haptic feedback in musical scenarios and exploring the intricacies of user experience with the system and its impact on musical interpretation.

Musical Form Generation

Lilac Atassi

While recent generative models can produce engaging music, their utility is limited. The variation in the music is often left to chance, resulting in compositions that lack structure. Pieces extending beyond a minute can become incoherent or repetitive. This paper introduces an approach for generating structured, arbitrarily long musical pieces. Central to this approach is the creation of musical segments using a conditional generative model, with transitions between these segments. The generation of prompts that determine the high-level composition is distinct from the creation of finer, lower-level details. A large language model is then used to suggest the musical form.

Jais and Jais-chat: Arabic-Centric Foundation and Instruction-Tuned Open Generative Large Language Models

Neha Sengupta, Sunil Kumar Sahu, Bokang Jia et al.

We introduce Jais and Jais-chat, new state-of-the-art Arabic-centric foundation and instruction-tuned open generative large language models (LLMs). The models are based on the GPT-3 decoder-only architecture and are pretrained on a mixture of Arabic and English texts, including source code in various programming languages. With 13 billion parameters, they demonstrate better knowledge and reasoning capabilities in Arabic than any existing open Arabic and multilingual models by a sizable margin, based on extensive evaluation. Moreover, the models are competitive in English compared to English-centric open models of similar size, despite being trained on much less English data. We provide a detailed description of the training, the tuning, the safety alignment, and the evaluation of the models. We release two open versions of the model -- the foundation Jais model, and an instruction-tuned Jais-chat variant -- with the aim of promoting research on Arabic LLMs. Available at https://huggingface.co/inception-mbzuai/jais-13b-chat
