MHub.ai: A Simple, Standardized, and Reproducible Platform for AI Models in Medical Imaging

Leonard Nürnberg, Dennis Bontempi, Suraj Pai et al.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform medical imaging by automating image analysis and accelerating clinical research. However, research and clinical use are limited by the wide variety of AI implementations and architectures, inconsistent documentation, and reproducibility issues. Here, we introduce MHub$.$ai, an open-source, container-based platform that standardizes access to AI models with minimal configuration, promoting accessibility and reproducibility in medical imaging. MHub$.$ai packages models from peer-reviewed publications into standardized containers that support direct processing of DICOM and other formats, provide a unified application interface, and embed structured metadata. Each model is accompanied by publicly available reference data that can be used to confirm model operation. MHub$.$ai includes an initial set of state-of-the-art segmentation, prediction, and feature extraction models for different modalities. The modular framework enables adaptation of any model and supports community contributions. We demonstrate the utility of the platform in a clinical use case through comparative evaluation of lung segmentation models. To further strengthen transparency and reproducibility, we publicly release the generated segmentations and evaluation metrics and provide interactive dashboards that allow readers to inspect individual cases and reproduce or extend our analysis. By simplifying model use, MHub$.$ai enables side-by-side benchmarking with identical execution commands and standardized outputs, and lowers the barrier to clinical translation.

An Ethiopian “Renaissance” Queen? Mentewab as Protector of Arts and Patron of Iconography

Raita Steyn

In Ethiopia, the period from the late 16th and 17th Centuries has caused a controversy because some consider this period as Ethiopia’s recovery from religious, civil conflicts as well as sectarian discord, while others including Kofi Darkwah (1975), define it as a continued descent prosses for the empire. In line with this disagreement, factual information can speak for itself in the course of this study. Emperor Susenyos (1572-1632 CE) was a strong supporter of Catholicism, yet his son, Fasilidas (1603-1667 CE) as his successor, reinstated Ethiopian miaphysite Orthodoxy. The establishment of Gondar as the permanent capital in 1636, is an event heralded by Henze (2000) as the onset of an Ethiopian Renaissance, particularly in artistic, architectural, and musical domains. After Fasilidas’s demise, his son, Yohannes I reigned from 1632-67 CE. Yet, it was Fasilidas’s grandson, Iyasu I the Great (r. 1682-1706 CE), who distinguished himself through extensive architectural projects, notably transforming Gondar into a captivating city. Iyasu I’s assassination caused significant turmoil in Gondar, subsequently resulting in a gradual loss of political power. When Iyasu I’s son, Bakaffa (r. 1721-1730 CE) ascended to the imperial throne, the arts - namely, chant (zema), poetry (qene), interpretation (tergum) and refinement of the court minstrels’ music had already been supported and vigorously promoted. However, it was Bakaffa’s wife and later widow, Mentewab (1706-1773 CE), who emerged as the pivotal figure in this Ethiopian “Renaissance”. Additionally, the diverse styles of Ethiopian iconography sponsored by Mentewab, some adorned with elements reminiscent of the decorative style of the Rococo period, illustrate the queen’s remarkable aesthetic standards. The research on Mentewab, also known as Welete Giyorgis, has been guided by portrayals in iconographies, chronicles, paintings, testimonials from church builders and castles, and indirectly by information provided in texts such as Kebre Negast, and Fetha Nagast. To this end, special attention has been drawn on Mentewab’s legacy as the founder, protector, and patron of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Narga Selassie, renowned for its resplendent Qwara style that fused European, Islamic, and Indian elements while retaining strong Ethiopian traits. With special attention to the iconographic representations of Queen Mentewab as the ktetor of Narga Selassie Church, the study explores symbolic significances embedded within relevant creations and artistic styles. By contextualising them within their historical framework, this analysis explores Mentewab’s influence on her contemporary politics, religion, art, and literature in Ethiopia.

Emotional design of traditional Chinese cultural creative products based on user demand

Li Guangzhou, Ratthai Porncharoen

Mortice-tenons are the main structural forms of ancient buildings, furniture, and woodwork in China. They are the inheritance of China's craft and cultural spirit, follow the principles of mechanics and have strong practicability. How-ever, mortice-tenons have gradually disappeared from modern life, mainly be-cause they cannot meet the specific needs of users. The purpose of this study is to establish a set of mortice-tenons structure innovation and product design for modern people. By analyzing the types and structural characteristics of mortice-tenon structure, based on the user's needs, using modern creative design methods, and combining with practice, we can verify how to further improve the market acceptance of mortice-tenon structure innovation prod-ucts, constantly explore the combination of modern technology and material experiments, and explore the emotional design of China traditional cultural creative products. Finally, it is proposed that further research is needed in this field to fully understand the user's behavior of using mortice-tenon structure innovation products, and at the same time, mortice-tenon structure innova-tion is applied to daily necessities and furniture products to meet the needs of a wider range of user scenarios.

About Some Aspects of Ethnic–Cultural and Confessional Processes in Azerbaijan in the XIII–XIV Centuries

Tarikh Meyrut Dostiev

The article deals with the study of ethnic-cultural and confessional processes in Azerbaijan in the XIII–XIV centuries. The methodological basis of the study was the basic principles of historical knowledge and a comprehensive analysis of sources of different types. The establishment of Mongol rule in Azerbaijan and a new wave of migration of Turkic tribes to the South Caucasus led to a further increase in the number of Turkic-speaking population. The Turkic language received official status and became the language of education. The Mongol khans pursued a policy of religious tolerance, patronage and support for various religions. Islam won a convincing victory in the rivalry of various religious doctrines and was declared the official religion at the beginning of the XIV century. In the XIII–XIV centuries, a new style was formed and developed in architecture and art based on the fusion of local Islamic traditions with East Asian elements. The summer residence of the Ilkhanid rulers in Takht-e Soleyman became one of the first centers where the formation of a new style was observed. In the decorative arts, the new style is especially clearly visible in art pottery. The results of Mongol rule were not the same for all regions of Azerbaijan. For South Azerbaijan, the Mongol period was a new stage of economic and cultural development, but for Arran it had negative consequences. Shirvan occupied a middle position between these two opposite sites.

PlatoSim: An end-to-end PLATO camera simulator for modelling high-precision space-based photometry

N. Jannsen, J. De Ridder, D. Seynaeve et al.

PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is the ESA M3 space mission dedicated to detect and characterise transiting exoplanets including information from the asteroseismic properties of their stellar hosts. The uninterrupted and high-precision photometry provided by space-borne instruments such as PLATO require long preparatory phases. An exhaustive list of tests are paramount to design a mission that meets the performance requirements, and as such, simulations are an indispensable tool in the mission preparation. To accommodate PLATO's need of versatile simulations prior to mission launch - that at the same time describe accurately the innovative but complex multi-telescope design - we here present the end-to-end PLATO simulator specifically developed for the purpose, namely PlatoSim. We show step-by-step the algorithms embedded into the software architecture of PlatoSim that allow the user to simulate photometric time series of CCD images and light curves in accordance to the expected observations of PLATO. In the context of the PLATO payload, a general formalism of modelling, end-to-end, incoming photons from the sky to the final measurement in digital units is discussed. We show the strong predictive power of PlatoSim through its diverse applicability and contribution to numerous working groups within the PLATO Mission Consortium. This involves the on-going mechanical integration and alignment, performance studies of the payload, the pipeline development and assessments of the scientific goals. PlatoSim is a state-of-the-art simulator that is able to produce the expected photometric observations of PLATO to a high level of accuracy. We demonstrate that PlatoSim is a key software tool for the PLATO mission in the preparatory phases until mission launch and prospectively beyond.

The Early Manuscripts of San Salvatore de Lingua in Messina (Mid-12th Century): Surveying the Chief Decorator

Antonino Tranchina

The monastery of Holy Savior has been the subject of much scholarship, but the liturgical reform requested by King Roger II of Sicily and carried out by the first archimandrite, Luke of Rossano, and the latter’s struggle to establish seemly equipment, has been largely neglected. Given its potential relevance for the material setting of the monastery’s early manuscript collection through the middle of the twelfth century, this seems an oversight. Art historians have repeatedly claimed that the monastery’s lofty status could have enabled the spread of Byzantine models to Norman Sicily, especially in relation to figurative arts and manuscript decoration. This paper discusses the same assumption from the opposite perspective. It explores the main tendencies of manuscript decoration at San Salvatore based on the extant evidence from the monastery’s early collection. Building on the paleographical and codicological observations provided in the past decades (mostly by philologists), I examine the manuscripts in terms of decorative practice and artistic culture.

[En] Muslim artisans were talented in producing art objects in various decorative forms that have needed a comprehensive study and examination. They generously decorated their artworks with different motifs, especially the Kufic script that played a vital role in the value of these artworks. The geometric Kufic script is widely shown on many buildings dated to the Mamluk period; however, it is scarcely found on the art objects of the same period. The researcher examined examples of Mamluk art objects and parts from architectural edifices with geometric Kufic inscriptions. After conducting an analysis and comparative study, the researcher found out that the style changed in arts, especially in the content and the forms of the letters. The study concludes that there are many differences in the style and contents of the inscriptions rather than those found in the architecture. This apparent change can be seen in the published and unpublished artifacts of the Mamluk era, especially the late period.

Industrial Art, art industriel, Kunstgewerbe…

Pronitcheva, Karina

The article deals with the emergence of industrial art museums in Russia in the 1860s and anticipates some of the results of a major study on Russian decorative arts and World Fairs between 1851 and 1900. The history of these museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg between 1862 and 1870, which is very little known both in Russia and abroad, is chosen to illustrate, on the example of Russia, a common phenomenon in Europe in the 1850s-1870s, namely the appearance of industrial art museums to stimulate the development of national industries. The research is based mainly on the analysis of hitherto unexplored archival documents.

Développer le « talent de voir »

Flore César

Created in 1820, the Nîmes drawing school was intended all along the 19th century for the teaching of drawing to the working classes as a priority. It met a need for instruction but also an economical need, as Nîmes was then counted among the most important manufacturing centers in France. The school found itself completed with a museum created by the municipal authorities, the prime vocation of the institution being to meet a pedagogic necessity. In addition, the drawing school acquired a collection of models that can be used directly in classes, that collection being only known today through its archives and the heritage of the Mérignargues family, which gave the school a teacher and a student. Particularly enriched in the 1880’s, these collections consist principally of molded plaster models, which represent statues, busts, ornaments, and architectural features… They become the mirror of a pedagogic system using imitation and comparison based on the antique ideal. Otherwise, the study of their constitution highlights their central role in the decorative arts development by the state in the late century, the collections thus becoming the instrument of a national policy.

Un établissement d’enseignement professionnel de style Art déco : le lycée Paul-Louis Cyfflé de Nancy

Martine Tronquart, Élise Nale

Built in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle French department) between 1925 and 1934 by the architect Jean-Frédéric Wielhorski (1874-1942), the current lycée Paul-Louis Cyfflé originally housed an upper primary school for boys before it became, much later on, a vocational high school that prepared students for occupations in the graphic industry. Established in 1833 by the Guizot Law, the upper primary schools, dedicated to general and vocational education, did not flourished until the 1880’s within the context of the votes on the Ferry Laws. The municipality of Nancy, in a movement of urban renewal, decided in the aftermath of the First World War to build a new school specialised in technical education on the convent of the Visitation site located in a poor neighbourhood at the doorstep of the city centre. At the time, it was a period of Art Deco-style major construction projects in Nancy, many of the private sponsors chose that new style. Influenced by the designs that came from the Exposition des arts décoratifs, “the decorative arts Exhibition” held in Paris in 1925, the future city architect Jean-Frédéric Wielhorski, keen on collages and mixtures of styles peculiar to the eclectic spirit, set up a project that claimed to be ambitious in its scale and modern in its décor. The hybrid architecture, with its tempered modernity consistent with the post-war conservatism of a provincial municipality, has made the lycée Paul-Louis Cyfflé a singular building in the architectural production of the inter-war period in Nancy, as well as one of the rare examples of Art Deco school architecture in the Grand-Est region, for whose quality it received the “Outstanding contemporary architecture” label in 2015.

Significance of Informal Trading Activities in The Emergence of Urban Spatial Vernacular: Case Study of Lagos Island, Nigeria

Jolaoso, B. Adekoyejo, Onolaja, O. A

Informal trading activities such as street hawking and sedentary trade have assumed a prominent role in public space use in Lagos Island. They have contributed significantly to the Island’s built environment morphology as an urban commercial centre having a vernacular nature and outlook. This paper seeks to examine the spatial impact of informal trading activities on the public space by understanding the background issues in order to evolve a spatial based framework for urban sustainability. To this end, the paper adopts field survey methodology with Isale Eko, Lagos Island as the case study area. The theoretical framework, based on Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad is the underpinning guide for the field survey. This is supported with Socio-cultural and Linguistic methods in Anthropology to obtain Primary data, which are descriptively presented. Respondents are nominated using stratified random selection, target groups and participants’ observations. Findings reveal that informal trading activities evolve the public space as social space through vernacular and thus, connote socio-cultural expressions in order to ensure livelihood and wellbeing. It further suggests a spatial adaptation strategy to mitigate the challenge of high land use and population density of the island which, from a conventional urban land use perspective, indicates spatial conflict and contestation, hence, a problem. The paper therefore concludes by recommending an inclusive, postmodernism approach which adopts vernacular as a dynamic, sustainable panacea to address urban spatial challenges.

A Village Mosque in Ankara Under Threat: The Mosque in Karahoca Village

Muzaffer Karaaslan

Wall paintings and painted decorations are an art form that has been practised since the early period of the Ottoman Empire. This branch of art became more widespread in the late period of the Ottoman Empire and was performed by artists in many cities. One of these cities is Ankara. There are many examples of painted decorations and murals in religious and civil architecture in Ankara. One of them is the subject of this study: the Mosque in Karahoca Village in Haymana. There is no monographic study conducted on this building. The aim of the study is to examine the painted decorations and wall paintings of the mosque. The decorations in the mosque dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. These examined decorations will first be compared with other examples in Ankara and then with the ones from nearby places. One of the most important features of the building is that its artists are known. The traces of the artists who made the decorations will be followed. In addition, the building, which is not in use today and is in a very bad condition, will be introduced and presented to the science world.

Probing the interior physics of stars through asteroseismology

C. Aerts

Yearslong time series of high-precision brightness measurements have been assembled for thousands of stars with telescopes operating in space. Such data have allowed astronomers to measure the physics of stellar interiors via nonradial oscillations, opening a new avenue to study the stars in the Universe. Asteroseismology, the interpretation of the characteristics of oscillation modes in terms of the physical properties of the stellar interior, brought entirely new insights in how stars rotate and how they build up their chemistry throughout their evolution. Data-driven space asteroseismology delivered a drastic increase in the reliability of computer models mimicking the evolution of stars born with a variety of masses and metallicities. Such models are critical ingredients for modern physics as a whole, because they are used throughout various contemporary and multidisciplinary research fields in space science, including the search for life outside the solar system, archaeological studies of the Milky Way, and the study of single and binary supernova progenitors, among which are future gravitational wave sources. The specific role and potential of asteroseismology for those modern research fields are illustrated. The review concludes with current limitations of asteroseismology and highlights how they can be overcome with ongoing and future large infrastructures for survey astronomy combined with new theoretical research in the era of high-performance computing. This review presents results obtained through major community efforts over the past decade. These breakthroughs were achieved in a collaborative and inclusive spirit that is characteristic of the asteroseismology community. The review's aim is to make this research field accessible to graduate students and readers coming from other fields of physics, with incentives to join future applications in this domain of astrophysics.

The colourful career of Sir. John Charles Robinson: collecting and curating at the early South Kensington Museum

Charlotte Drew

John Charles Robinson was a ‘Renaissance man’ of the Victorian art world: a curator, collector, critic, connoisseur, design teacher and even a practicing artist. As the first curator of the South Kensington Museum collections, between 1853 and 1867, he desired to teach ‘good taste’ and educate the visitor in the art of connoisseurship. The collecting networks he created and the influential scholarship he produced were vital to the Museum’s popularity in the early years and ensured its firm establishment as an internationally significant institution. At the Museum, Robinson’s carefully arranged display schemes aimed to teach good aesthetic judgment and raise the status of the decorative arts. This article explores Robinson’s pivotal public role as the curator of the South Kensington collections and the crossovers found in his methods for collecting, curating and connoisseurship in the public and private sphere.

Les mots et les choses : nouvelles études sur les arts visuels français du xviie siècle

Todd P. Olson

Four recent publications address the productive tensions between the study of language and materiality in seventeenth-century French visual studies. Olivier Bonfait and Laurent Lahire consider the critical reception of Nicolas Poussin. Their books examine how the artistic, political and economic valuation of works of art was constituted by diverse institutions and discourses: artistic, political and legal among others. Stéphane Castelluccio and Frédéric Cousinié look at different aspects of material culture, whether the elaboration of human needs at Versailles in the decorative arts or the relationship between bodily fluids and the viscosity of oil paintings by Philippe de Champaigne, Jacques Blanchard and Claude le Lorrain. These studies suggest different perspectives on le Grand Siècle.

Francis Jourdain (1876-1958), un précurseur du mobilier contemporain

Sylvie Gonzalez

The Musée d'art et d'histoire at Saint-Denis holds an important collection of archives and objects left by Francis Jourdain, an artist of multiple talents and facets. The collection include several hundred designs whihc are representative of his work as a whole:paintings, drawings, preparatory sketches for interior designs and decorative arts, furniture ensembles, ceramic and glass pieces. Jourdain was a painter and a skilled art worker and, following in the footsteps of the Austrian architecte Adolphe Loos, he preached simplicity as a value in its own right. He brought revolutionary change to furniture design with the principle of interchangeable pieces of furniture, and opened a shop where his creations could be purchased or ordered by catalogue. His designs are presented in different parts of the museum: the bedroom of Hélène Henry, a textile designer, and the salon of George Besson, an art critic and collector.
