Touching Aesthetics: A Neurophilosophical Perspective

Marc Jiménez-Rolland, Mario Gensollen

This paper explores how Patricia Churchland’s insights on methodological naturalism might underwrite a deeper understanding of the role of touch in aesthetic experience. Although aesthetics has privileged sight and hearing by relying on philosophical assumptions, we argue that recent research in neuroscience provides evidence of multimodal ingredients in meaningful encounters with art, including aesthetic tactual features. This calls for a substantial reassessment of aesthetic theory informed by contemporary neuroscientific insights. To support our claim, we provide a critical historical overview of the aesthetic tradition that systematically excluded the sense of touch. We present empirical evidence from several neuroscientific studies, where aesthetic experience is portrayed as fundamentally multimodal, especially involving touch. We then apply Churchland’s insights on methodological naturalism to aesthetic theory, arguing for her integrative, empirically informed approach in aesthetics. We conclude by exploring some philosophical, artistic, and institutional implications of recognizing touch as an integral dimension of aesthetic experience.

Evaluation of color stability and material surface stability of different types of clear aligners under curcumin staining in vitro

Ketai He, Mingjie Xu, Wen Liao et al.

Abstract Aesthetics play a crucial role in patients’ choice of orthodontic clear aligners, as poor color stability can compromise their appearance during wear. This study aimed to evaluate the color and surface stability of different types of orthodontic clear aligners exposed to various concentrations of curcumin solutions in vitro. Four types of clear aligners (Invisalign, Angelalign, Spark, and Dreve), along with non-thermoformed Dreve film, were cut into 5 mm × 5 mm squares and immersed in curcumin solutions of different concentrations and a control solution. The concentrations were determined based on the curcumin content in curry. Anhydrous ethanol was used as the solvent, which may influence surface properties and color stability and partially simulating damage caused by alcohol consumption or bacterial metabolites. After immersion for 12 h and 7 days, the squares were ultrasonically cleaned, and color changes were measured using a colorimeter, then converted to National Bureau of Standards (NBS) units. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to observe surface characteristics before and after staining. After 12 h of immersion in 10 µg/ml solutions, all samples except the Dreve film exhibited at least an “Appreciable: marked change,” with Angelalign showing a more pronounced color alteration. After 7 days of immersion, most materials displayed color changes ranging from “Much: extremely marked change” to “Very much: change to other colors.” Across all concentrations and time points, Invisalign aligners exhibited significantly higher ΔE* values than Dreve (P < 0.05). Although SEM and AFM results were not entirely consistent, both indicated that PU-based aligners were more susceptible to surface morphology changes than PET-G-based aligners. Enhancing the aesthetic color stability of orthodontic materials could contribute to improved clinical outcomes.

Insights into the role of mesenchymal stem cells in cutaneous medical aesthetics: from basics to clinics

Junyi Li, Ye Liu, Rui Zhang et al.

Abstract With the development of the economy and the increasing prevalence of skin problems, cutaneous medical aesthetics are gaining more and more attention. Skin disorders like poor wound healing, aging, and pigmentation have an impact not only on appearance but also on patients with physical and psychological issues, and even impose a significant financial burden on families and society. However, due to the complexities of its occurrence, present treatment options cannot produce optimal outcomes, indicating a dire need for new and effective treatments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their secretomics treatment is a new regenerative medicine therapy that promotes and regulates endogenous stem cell populations and/or replenishes cell pools to achieve tissue homeostasis and regeneration. It has demonstrated remarkable advantages in several skin-related in vivo and in vitro investigations, aiding in the improvement of skin conditions and the promotion of skin aesthetics. As a result, this review gives a complete description of recent scientific breakthroughs in MSCs for skin aesthetics and the limitations of their clinical applications, aiming to provide new ideas for future research and clinical transformation.

Comparison of Optical Properties and Fracture Loads of Multilayer Monolithic Zirconia Crowns with Different Yttria Levels

Chien-Ming Kang, Tzu-Yu Peng, Yan-An Wu et al.

Multilayer monolithic zirconia, which incorporates polychromatic layers that mimic natural tooth gradients, offers enhanced aesthetics and functionality while reducing debonding risks and improving fabrication efficiency. However, uncertainties remain regarding the fracture characteristics of multilayer monolithic zirconia crowns under occlusal loading, whether composed of uniform or combined yttria levels. The current study investigated how variations in yttria levels and thicknesses affected the optical properties and fracture loads of multilayer monolithic zirconia. Samples of multilayer monolithic zirconia in the Vita A1 shade were used, while employing 3Y (SZ) and 4Y + 5Y (AZ) yttria levels. The optical properties, including the color difference (Δ<i>EWS</i>) and translucency parameters (<i>TP</i>00), were measured using a digital colorimeter. The fracture loads were analyzed using a universal testing machine, and fractured surfaces were examined under a stereomicroscope. Statistical analyses assessed the impacts of the yttria levels and sample thicknesses on the optical properties. The Δ<i>EWS</i> values of SZ ranged 3.6 to 4.0, while for AZ, Δ<i>EWS</i> at 0.5 mm was 3.9 and <2.6 for other thicknesses. The <i>TP</i>00 values decreased with an increased thickness, with AZ generally exhibiting greater translucency than SZ. In the fracture load investigations, SZ (>1600 N) generally exceeded AZ (>1260 N), with fracture loads notably increasing with thickness, particularly for premolars (SZ > 3270 N, AZ > 2257 N). SZ predominantly exhibited partial and complete fractures, whereas AZ showed fewer non-fracture categorizations. Complete fractures began with dense, irregular cracks that extended outward to reveal smooth surfaces, while premolars subjected to higher loads exhibited concentric ripple-like structures. Partial fractures revealed radial textures indicative of areas of stress concentration. In summary, higher yttria levels were correlated with increased translucency, while variations in the fracture loads primarily stemmed from differences in the tooth position or thickness. Overall, multilayer monolithic zirconia incorporating combined yttria levels of 4Y + 5Y (AZ) offered high translucency, precise color matching, and substantial fracture resistance, rendering it highly suitable for aesthetic and functional dental applications.

Strength, Durability, and Aesthetics of Corner Joints and Edge Banding in Furniture Design: A Review

Zoran Vlaović, Tomislav Gržan, Ivica Župčić et al.

Corner joints and edge banding are essential components that significantly impact the strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal of particleboard furniture. This review examines the critical role of edge banding in enhancing the performance of corner joints, which are fundamental to the overall quality of panel furniture. A targeted literature search was conducted across key databases, including the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC), Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on scientific resources in the technical and biotechnical sciences. The selection of joint types, materials, and construction methods can substantially influence both the structural integrity and visual design of the furniture. Well-designed corner joints improve durability and longevity by ensuring that furniture can withstand various forces and loads without failure or deformation. These joints enhance the aesthetics of furniture by providing seamless and visually appealing connections between different elements. Edge banding is vital for reinforcing corner joint strength, as different materials exhibit varying degrees of resistance to impact, scratches, and abrasion, thereby safeguarding furniture surfaces. Also, edge banding contributes to the furniture’s longevity, ensuring durability during use as well as through disassembly and transport during remodeling or relocation. This review aims to consolidate existing knowledge and establish parameters for future research on the quality and performance of corner joints and edge bands in particleboard furniture.

Technical aesthetic in the works of Alberto Buri

Marwa Nizar Youssef, Monther Fadel Hassan

The artistic technique has an important role in the constructive analyzes of the plastic visual achievements according to the relationship of the artistic elements and the mechanisms of their operation with each other, so the artist deliberately shows the aesthetics of these techniques through his own artistic and technical style according to his conscious ability to move away from the classical traditions. The research consists of four chapters, the chapter included The first is on the methodological framework of the research, so the problem was summed up by the following question: What are the technical aesthetics in the works of Alberto Buri? As for its importance, it was represented by studying the works of the artist (Alberto Buri) for his stylistic and technical uniqueness among the artists of his era. As for the spatial borders (Europe and the United States of America), the temporal borders of the period (1949-1960). Among the results reached by the researcher: The (Buri) style was associated with the technique of existing objects, as it took the collection of dilapidated materials in order to liberate the artwork from all classical constraints and adopt contemporary techniques He mixed dyes with other materials to form different surfaces that were strange.

Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series): The Embodiment of Waste Values and Aesthetics

Gayle Matthias

Written from the perspective of practice-led research, this reflective case study rationalises and charts the production of ‘Clean-Up Workers (Deluxe Series)’—mixed media sculptures that embody notions of waste aesthetic, value and abjection. Integrating discourses surrounding waste theory and using the sink and plug as a metaphor to discuss Lacan’s theory of the <i>objet petit a</i>, the paper is presented as an autobiographical waste narrative. Production of a series of anatomical vacuum cleaners made from re-appropriated artwork found waste materials in the form of ‘pre-owned objects or materials’ and ‘by-products’ of a creative practice’, sit alongside crafted luxurious glass objects and speak of corporeal ageing, dysfunction and the domestic realm. Discarded objects take the form of car parts found in the non-places of the gutter. Through assemblage, these unique items’ ‘use-time’ is recontextualised and elevated as art objects viewed within a gallery arena.

What is in a name? Does the difference between onto-theology and theo-ontology direct the way from eco-theology to theo-ecology? Specific Russian theological perspectives

Johan Buitendag

I approach this venture of figuring out the correct terminology to understand reality through the prism of two distinctive Russian Orthodox theologians, Pavel Florensky (1882–1937) and Sergius Bulgakov (1871–1944). The lens I apply mainly to their works is their respective understanding of cosmology, that is, ontology and epistemology. Therefore, I concur with Grenz to abandon the term ‘onto-theology’ and qualify the inverse as a Trinitarian theo-ontology. This honours the intimate connection between knowing and being, and prevents the bifurcation between fidelity and rationality. Mutatis mutandis, the same applies to ‘eco-theology’. This inversion reminds one of Hans-Urs von Balthasar, who bartered the concept of an aesthetic theology for theological aesthetics. Turning this question around would advance our dialogue with the sciences as the common denominator of the discourse is rather nature (creation) discerned from an acknowledged a priori (as all cognition do). In other words, the term theo-ecology is proposed. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The purpose study is not ecological but rather an asyndetic use of the terminology about the science and religion dialogue, with reference to the nomenclature of ecology and theology. All observation terms and sentences are theory-laden. Religion can be viewed as a linguistic framework that shapes the entirety of life and thought. Truth claims should focus on the grammar (or rules of the game) and not the lexicon when expressive symbolism is employed.

Green Roofs as an Approach to Enhance Urban Sustainability: A Study of Public Perception in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Ali Alqahtany

This study focuses on highlighting the major effects and challenges being faced in the implementation of the green roof technique in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Green roofs have proven to be energy efficient, environment friendly, and economical in a long run. Due to the increasing global environment temperature, it has become necessary to implement such sustainable methods that help in the achievement of urban sustainability. Saudi Arabia has seen some reluctance in the implementation of green roofs in buildings. The reasons for not adopting this system have not been reported as yet. To study the level of awareness among the public and the challenges they are facing regarding green roofs, this study was taken up. A survey questionnaire was designed with a high level of flexibility covering the key issues, including the related areas that are affected in the daily life of a resident and also the challenges faced by the general public in the installation of such systems in their existing or new buildings. An extensive literature review and a reconnaissance survey were performed before shortlisting the major factors and challenges to be included in the survey questionnaire. An overwhelming response was received from the people of Riyadh City. Almost 94% of people agreed to the fact that green roofs enhance the aesthetics of the building, and the same number of people agreed that they play a role in controlling the air quality. On the other hand, 91% of the respondents identified the climate of the area as the biggest challenge in implementing green roofs on the buildings. The study concludes with strong recommendations for the local authorities to plan quick actions. The study shall help the building owners, city planners, and policy makers in identifying the major hurdles being faced by the residents in adopting green roofs and will help them to provide solutions to these issues.
