Bicol University's Student Embodying of the Four Pillars through Hataw

Carina Sales

This study explores how Bicol University students embody the institution's four core pillars—Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service—through participation in the university's physical activity program, Hataw. These pillars are the foundation of the university's mission to develop academically proficient, morally grounded, and socially responsible individuals. The study aimed to (1) identify students' demographic profiles, (2) determine which pillar they most prominently embody during Hataw, and (3) classify factors hindering full embodiment of these pillars. 1,512 students participated in the study, which employed a quantitative research design using a structured checklist. Results showed that most respondents were 18-20 (79.70%), with females representing 62.9%. Students from various academic programs, particularly the College of Education and the Institute of Physical Education, Sports, and Recreation, were highly involved in Hataw. Findings revealed that students embodied the Scholarship pillar by gaining knowledge and enjoying the learning experience. Leadership was demonstrated through teamwork and peer support, while Character was reflected in fostering a supportive environment. Service was evident in voluntary participation without expecting rewards. However, several barriers hindered full engagement, including low confidence, nervousness, adverse environmental conditions, lack of preparation, and unfamiliarity with choreography. The study highlights the significance of programs like Hataw in fostering holistic student development and reinforcing institutional values. Recommendations include increasing participation in activities that build skills, leadership, and character while addressing barriers to engagement. These findings underscore the role of physical activities in personal growth and suggest ways for Bicol University to enhance co-curricular programs to support student development.

Understanding The Lived Experiences of Black Female College Athletes and Factors that Influence their Anxiety.

Luka Ojemaye, Joyce Olushola-Ogunrinde , Billy Hawkins et al.

To inform the development of culturally and socially appropriate interventions, this study examined the lived experiences of Black female college athletes (BFCA) and identified sources that increase their vulnerability to anxiety. Black Feminist Thought, with sub-tenets of intersectionality and outsider within status, was used as the theoretical foundation to examine the lives of the BFCA. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, this qualitative study addressed the question: What sociocultural factors affect anxiety in Black female college athletes? Nine Black female college athletes from an NCAA Division I program agreed to participate in this study. Regarding the sources of anxiety, four themes emerged: regimented schedule (subthemes: lack of freedom, decreased choices, and external locus), forced community (subthemes: isolation and team conflict), emphasis on athletics (subthemes: coaching pressures, training pressures, and academic pressures) and navigating marginalization (subthemes: gender & racial stereotypes and gender & racial inequality). Two unexpected themes also materialized: family support and suggested solutions (subthemes: representation and communication). The findings and analysis were based on the data collected and the theoretical lens. The results suggest the need for culturally appropriate interventions to support this specific college athlete population.

STRUCTURE OF THE NATURE-ORIENTED RECREATION SYSTEM OF THE NORTHERN URALS

A. Korolev

The article discusses the nature-oriented recreational system (NRS) of the Northern Urals, which is necessary for the adequate development and regulation of tourism processes in this area. In this regard, the purpose of the study is to study the structure of the NRS of the Northern Urals, for which it is necessary: to study the composition of the NRS, to determine the manifestation of its development without transformation into a TRS, to find out the ratio of uninhabited areas (UA) and tourist areas and to study the territorial organization of nature-oriented tourism in the Northern Urals. The NRS of the Northern Urals consists of 4 tourist areas: Konzhakovsky, Kvarkushsky, Vishera and Manpupunersky and 5 UA, which are mainly visited by tourists living in the regions in which these areas are located, or from which tourist routes begin. Supervisory authorities consist of administrations of various levels, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the search and rescue service, the route qualification commission and insurance companies, but they are not directly present on the territory of the UA, but are located in regional and district centers closest to the UA. The following types of tourist infrastructure are presented on the territory of the UA in the Northern Urals: tourist bases, cordons of reserves, and several huts of fishermen. All four subsystems are present in the NRS of the Northern Urals, except for the UA surrounding Mount Telposiz. It is attractive, frequented by tourists and is developing without being transformed into a TRS.

Examining the Ability of Title IX to Provide Equitable Participation Opportunities for Black Women College Athletes

Courtney Flowers, Jasmine Hamilton, Joyce Olushola Ogunrinde

The purpose of this study was to reveal Title IX fueled obstacles which prevent Black women from achieving equity in college sports. The researchers sought to provide a critical analysis of the synchronous burden of race and gender discrimination experienced by Black women in college sports. The study found this form of discrimination is unique to Black women as they experience sex discrimination similar to white women and race discrimination similar to Black men, but neither white women or Black men experience simultaneous forms of race and gender discrimination as Black women do (Crenshaw 1988; Mathewson; 1996). Title IX is a single-axis equity law which uses sex to factor discrimination, yet as Black women experience both race and gender discrimination synchronously this law does not protect Black women from discrimination in the way they experience it. Yet, examining the effectiveness of Title IX to prevent race and sex discrimination is problematic because even with the law, schools have not achieved gender equity in college sports since its enactment in 1972 (Butler & Lopiano, 2003; Cooper & Newton, 2021;Kaplan, Hecker, & Fink, 2021; NWLC, 2022; Staurowsky, 2011; 2020; 2022). Another challenge is the NCAA Emerging Sports Program for Women uses a single axis lens to increase athletic opportunities for women. Therefore Black women are barred from benefiting from the increased access and athletic opportunities produced through the Emerging Sports program as it uses sex as a solo determinant to increase athletic opportunities. It is worth noting the extreme lack of research on Black women in sports has rendered Black women college athletes invisible in data on women’s sports (Butler & Lopiano, 2003; Carter-Francique & Flowers, 2013; Cooper & Newton, 2021; McDowell & Carter-Francique, 2017; Pickett et al, 2012; Staurowsky et al., 2021; 2022). This adds to the complexity of examining forms of discrimination experienced by Black women in college sports. The study found racial clustering, the single-axis lens of Title IX, and NCAA gender equity programs collectively provide harm to Black women in college sports and uniquely attack their ability to achieve equity in college sports.

The influence of workplace bullying on the performance of hotel employees: the mediating role of emotional intelligence and psychological resilience

Kamal Adewole Odunjo-Saka , Banji Rildwan Olaleye , Eric Sarpong et al.

Workplace bullying has consistently been observed to have negative impacts on employee well-being by researchers. In the field of bullying research, there hasn't been a study that integrates mediators and explains the nexus between the many different factors that have been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of bullying on workers' performance at hotels in North Cyprus and the mediating role played by emotional intelligence and psychological resilience. Data were randomly collected from 442 hotel employees, including those from five- and four-star hotels on the island. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis. Furthermore, the heuristic model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). According to the results, workplace bullying significantly and negatively influences an employee's performance. Secondly, emotional intelligence and psychological resilience positively mediated the relationship between bullying and performance among TRNC hotel employees. More cross-cultural and longitudinal research is needed to determine if these mediators have an enduring effect over time and across different cultures.

Areas of Research on the Development of the Tourist and Recreational Sphere as an Object of Public Administration

N. Boretskaya, G. Krapivina

In the article, the problem of determining the directions of research of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere as an object of public administration acquires further theoretical and methodological substantiation. The directions of improving the mechanisms of decision-making by state bodies for the development of the tourist and recreational sphere are formulated on the basis of the introduction of a systematic approach, digitization and modeling. The efforts of state bodies to form the structure of the market in order to study and analyze the impact of public administration and regulation on the realities of the tourist and recreational sphere and the proposals of tourist and recreational products that affect the public interest in them on the part of consumers of tourist services are a separate area of scientific research in tourism. -recreational sphere as an object of public administration and decision-making mechanisms by state bodies for the development of tourist and recreational territories It is shown that the processes of using tourist and recreational resources and diversification of the economy are positively influenced by the intersectoral nature of the tourist and recreational sphere due to the multiplier effect for related sectors of the economy of the territories, directly involved in the tourist services served by consumers. It has been proved that a city characterized by a significant territorial concentration of labor, consumers, related industries and services is very attractive for the activities of enterprises in the tourism and recreation sector in terms of minimizing costs, and it is expedient in determining the role and mechanisms of government influence on the development of the tourism and recreation sector. and the formation of strategic goals for the development of a regime for promoting their development is the study of the tourist and recreational market of the territory. The development of the regional and local tourist and recreational sphere is greatly facilitated by the transformation in the public consciousness of the concept of free time, i.e. changes in the behavior of consumers of tourism services in relation to specific settlements or the region as a whole. The main goal of the qualitative improvement of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere is to increase its openness, spread goodwill towards the population, accelerate management processes, effectively solve problems, increase the mobility of workers in tourist and recreational enterprises and their satisfaction with work.

THE ANALYSIS OF INVESTMENT INCOME IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RECREATION AND TOURISM SECTOR OF THE WESTERN REGION OF UKRAINE

H. Horyn

The article deals with the development of the recreation and tourism sector in the Western region of Ukraine. Domestic investments in the development of the recreation and tourism sector of Ukraine over the past 20 years are analyzed, respectively, tended to fluctuate slightly, and reduced during the epidemic COVID 19. Accordingly, sales by travel agencies in the second quarter of 2020 decreased by 95.8% compared to the second quarter of 2019, hotel services decreased by 84.1%. Ukraine is one of those countries that have significant but unrealized tourism potential. It was revealed that a number of positive and negative tendencies, which are decreasing on the one hand, and on the other hand, create a favorable basis for investors in the recreational and tourist sphere of the region. The structure of capital investments in the recreation and tourism sector of the Western region is studied. Of these, the largest share was invested in additional transport services and ancillary operations, investments in the activities of temporary accommodation facilities, in the field of culture and sports, recreation and entertainment. At the same time, the main part of investments, except for the sphere of art and museum activities, took place at the expense of own funds of enterprises. It is proved that the structural shifts of the objects of this sphere, in particular, its material and technical base, have a significant impact on the intensification of investment in the recreational and tourist sphere of the region. The current investment proposals developed by the regional state administrations of the regions of the Western region for the development of the recreational and tourist sphere of the region are submitted. An integrated approach to the formation and implementation of state policy in the field of tourism and resorts is defined, which provides for the combination and intersectoral coordination of the components of tourism and resorts: tourism activities (tour operators, travel agents; excursion services); accommodation services (collective accommodation; individual accommodation); transport (air; rail; road; water: sea and river; city public); tourist information centers; museums and galleries; theaters, arenas, clubs; congress halls and conference centers; catering establishments; sports arenas; shopping malls, shops, souvenir shops; IT companies; insurance companies; media companies.

Bureaucracy as Politics in Action in Parks and Recreation

H. Randell-Moon, Arthur J. Randell

Abstract:The North American television show Parks and Recreation focuses on the bureaucratic processes and practices of managing the Parks and Recreation Department for the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Filmed in the mockumentary style of television comedies such as The Office, humour is derived from the discrepancy between the self-importance the main character, Leslie Knope, deputy director of the department, attaches to the department’s work and the mundane realities of mid-level bureaucracy in municipal government. Nevertheless, in spite of this parodic discrepancy, the programme encourages viewers to sympathise with Leslie’s perspective that bureaucracy is foundational to building inter-organisational relationships and stimulating community activism. By using the mockumentary conceit to focus on public administration, Parks and Recreation also reveals the role of bureaucracy in place-making and the attendant histories that are included and excluded in the foundation of settler autochthony. Because the ideal of public administration as the service of community is emphasised, Parks and Recreation is also able to position the opposite of this ideal – reduction of municipal services and bureaucratic non-caring – as mockable and problematic for community interests, particularly the needs of women and minority groups. Parks and Recreation highlights how bureaucracy is politics in action that can fundamentally shape the civic, private, and communal spaces of residents’ lives.

A Survey of Professional Responsibilities and Job Satisfaction Among Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Practitioners

H. Roussel, P. Ouellette, J. Singleton et al.

This study examined the professional responsibilities and job satisfaction of 258 members of the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA). It extended an earlier survey done with recreational practitioners affiliated with the Federation quebecoise du loisir en institution (FQLI). The factor analysis of duties and satisfaction shows results that match with the original study. For duties, four factors center on administration, therapy, professional development and face-to-face leadership (FTFL); for the satisfaction scale, the analysis confirms the intrinsic and extrinsic components of the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire. A canonical analysis shows similar results, but with some variations, between the two studies. In the case of the first canonical factor, members in a hospital setting are more involved in recreational therapy and in FTFL, hold a therapist title and have a lower salary. In the second canonical factor, members in a hospital setting, without a therapist title, do more administrative tasks but fewer of their duties relate to FTFL and professional development; and they also have a lower salary. In conclusion, we contrast our findings with those of the original study and discuss reasons for similarities or differences in the research results. Among implications is the recognition of a wide variation in what Canadian therapeutic recreation (TR) practitioners do, where they work, and how they identify. Subscribe to TRJ

Crossing Goal Lines and Borders

Devin Leslie Walker, Louis Harrison, Robert Bennett

Many Black male student-athletes suffer from identity foreclosure at rates higher than their white peers as they fail to develop salient aspects of their identity outside of the athlete role (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996; Beamon, 2012). Education abroad offers the opportunity to take advantage of a holistic collegiate experience, which impedes the detrimental effects of the athletic identity foreclosure process. International educational opportunities can positively influence Black male student-athletes’ personal, academic, and professional development as they come to see the world beyond the gym and campus. This article examines the significance and value of creating education abroad opportunities for Black male student-athletes as a means of providing meaningful educational opportunities in the realm of higher education.

Preliminary long-term health outcomes associated with recreation-based health and wellness programs for injured service members

Jasmine A. Townsend, Brent L. Hawkins, Jessie L. Bennett et al.

Abstract Recreation-based health and wellness programs for military service members are currently a topic of significant interest in the recreation and health industries. This study examined the health outcomes associated with participation in Project Sanctuary, a week-long recreation-based health and wellness family retreat for injured military service members. Linear mixed modeling was used to examine changes in health outcomes over four time points, and considered multiple covariates. One-hundred twenty-seven service members participated. Statistically significant reductions in total scores for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL) measures were found, as well as notable improvements in Depression, Anxiety, and Atress Scale (DASS) and mental health functioning immediately following the intervention. No changes were found in physical health functioning. Trends demonstrated that participants maintained the positive psychological health changes over the three and six month time points. Veteran's Administration (VA) disability rate was the only significant covariate associated with health outcome change across timepoints. Implications for future practice and research are discussed in the article.

Understanding the Perceived Effectiveness of Applying the Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) Framework for Recreation Planning: A Multi-Case Study in U.S. National Parks

Jessica P. Fefer, S. D. Urioste-Stone, J. Daigle et al.

The Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) framework is a planning framework developed by the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) to help guide visitor use planning and decision-making in U.S. national parks. The research reported here highlights the perceptions of park practitioners about major successes and challenges associated with visitor management and recreation planning using the VERP framework. We used a qualitative multiple case study design to explore three (3) national parks that have applied the framework. We conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with park managers, park planners, and recreation scientists, and used thematic coding to categorize the data to capture relevant themes. Our results show that lack of training and leadership in the social dimensions of resource management has limited the successful application of VERP. On the other hand, closely following framework procedures and maintaining quality partnerships with entities both within the agency and outside to facilitate planning efforts, has helped visitor management approaches achieve desired outcomes. This research contributes to the ongoing work of visitor use specialists by using lessons learned and applying them to future planning. It provides tangible outcomes to park managers by providing examples of VERP application to base decisions.

Examining the State of Parks and Recreation Degree Programs

Craig A. Talmage, M. Searle, Kevin Wilson

Abstract The coming future for parks and recreation education must not succumb to the nostalgia of the glory days of the past. Such nostalgia risks oversimplifying the challenges overcome in the past and challenges faced now and in the future. This paper presents compelling evidence for the repositioning of parks and recreation education. It first frames the larger social forces (e.g., political and economic) that have impacted the parks and recreation field. An overview of the previous literature on parks and recreation education is presented. National data trends in degrees awarded in parks and recreation are illustrated and placed in the context of other human service fields (e.g., social work, urban planning, public administration, and tourism). It concludes by asking the reader to consider the design implications for curricula in parks and recreation and how to reposition parks and recreation education to ensure a better future.

Prevention of devient behavior of adolescents by means of activities in sports sessions

Н.Б. Кутергин, Д.Е. Егоров

Analyzes deviant behavior was studied. The influence of occupations in the sports sections on the formation of the personality of a teenager was studied. The aim of the study is not to analyze different opinions about deviant behavior, but in the study of the impact of youth employment in sports sections on this behavior. Methodical recommendations and advice on the effectiveness of preventing deviant behavior are presented. Deviant behavior is understood not only as a deviation from social generally accepted social norms in a negative direction, but also in a positive - positive deviation. Young talented people, in whatever sphere they are not employed, also deviate from the norm, this is the so-called socially-positive deviation. But most often we are talking about negative deviation, such that behavior can be condemned in terms of at least public morality and morality, as a maximum - from the point of view of non-compliance with a number of laws, including criminal ones. The causes of deviant behavior in adolescents are different, they are in the process of socialization of a young person. Socialization is the process of the individual's entry into the system of social relations. This process is influenced by many factors, where adolescence is a special place.
