Clinical Signs, Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Findings, Treatment, and Outcome of Mycotic Discospondylitis in 11 Dogs

Samuel Okonji, Andrea Di Paola, Silvia Benini et al.

ABSTRACT Background Discospondylitis refers to inflammation of the intervertebral disc and adjacent vertebral endplates. The literature on mycotic discospondylitis (MD) in dogs is limited. Objective To describe clinical and advanced diagnostic imaging findings, therapeutic strategies, and outcomes in dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of MD. Animals Eleven client‐owned dogs with a diagnosis of MD. Materials and Methods Medical records from five veterinary neurological referral centers were retrospectively reviewed between 2017 and 2024. The confirmed diagnosis of MD was based on clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and the detection of fungal hyphae in urine, intervertebral disc, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Results German shepherd (GS) were the most prevalent breed (7/11). Pain was the main clinical sign reported in all dogs, associated with gait abnormalities in 9 dogs. T3‐L3 neuroanatomical localization was described in 10 dogs. MRI showed multiple intervertebral disc involvement in 7 dogs. Fungal hyphae were identified in urine sediment in 5 dogs and by CT‐guided needle aspiration of the affected disc in 2 dogs. Aspergillus spp. was the most common etiological agent being reported in 7 dogs. Ten dogs were dead at the end of data analysis, with a median survival time of 30 days. Conclusion and Clinical Importance This case series demonstrates the necessity of accurate diagnosis to set an appropriate treatment, despite the poor prognosis after antifungal therapy.

Unexpected Basal Anti-Müllerian Hormone Concentrations in a 6-Year-Old Bitch Presenting an Ovarian Remnant

Matteo Burgio, Lluis Ferré-Dolcet, Alice Carbonari et al.

Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS) refers to a condition affecting spayed females, characterized by clinical signs typically seen in intact bitches. In this report, Callie, a 6-year-old spayed female German Shepherd, was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Bari for a specialist examination due to serosanguineous discharge from the vulva. All diagnostic tests recommended in the literature were performed to diagnose ORS. Notably, the Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) assay, considered the gold standard for ORS diagnosis, was used, and the dog tested negative based on the established bibliographic cut-off values. However, advanced diagnostic techniques, including CT scans and laparoscopy, were performed, and histological examination ultimately confirmed the presence of ovarian tissue in the dog’s abdominal cavity. This clinical case underscores the importance of combining hormonal tests with advanced imaging and surgical diagnostics to ensure accurate diagnosis. It highlights the limitations of relying solely on AMH values and emphasizes the need for further research into diagnostic tests, their cut-off values, and the role of collateral examinations to achieve definitive diagnoses in cases where hormonal assays yield inconclusive results.

Hubert Fichte, "Paleta", paletians, homosexuals and other beatians or: Can't being be without heteronormative compulsions?

Petrović-Jilih Marina M.

Building on the current literary and scientific discourse of the German-speaking area, which only began to deal intensively with issues of gender and queer literature at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century, this paper reveals and analyzes the homosexual and gender discourse presented in the auto-fictional novel Paleta by homosexual/bisexual author Hubert Fichte. The novel was published in 1968 when homosexual relationships were illegal in the Federal Republic of Germany. The goals of the paper are to investigate the (im)possibility of finding self-knowledge, self-stabilization, and happiness in people who are "different" from others, as well as to shed light on the author's role as a forerunner of contemporary gender and queer studies. The paper is theoretically based on post-feminist theories, which hold that gender is a culturally established construct of heteronormative societies.

MOTIVATION FOR ENROLMENT IN THE GERMAN STUDIES PROGRAMME: A CASE STUDY AT THE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY IN NIŠ

Branka Ognjanović

The purpose of the study is to investigate the motivation for enrolment in the German studies programme at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš by using the adjusted and simplified Academic Motivation Scale. The German studies programme is one of the newest programmes offered at this institution. In 2022, when research was conducted, the first generation of students was in the process of successfully obtaining the bachelor’s degree after four years of studying; therefore it was an important step in self-assessment to inquire into the reasons for their choosing this programme. The language and literature studies are facing funding difficulties worldwide and the number of applicants for enrolment is an important funding factor, which determines the sustainability of the programme. Understanding the motivation for enrolment in the German studies could help determine the future development of the programme as well as the direction of the Department’s promotional activities. The research sample consists of 50 students of BA German Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš, aged 19 to 45, and the results show that their primary motivation is intrinsic and stems from the striving for accomplishment and competency. They are also driven by a desire for knowledge and – externally – through identified regulation, that is, through internalization of extrinsic motives, by valuing the possibilities of successfully entering the labour market and finding a good job as a German studies graduate.

Mit of Hybrid Mixtures – Why NO New Standard?

Dieter Gabel, Joshua Huether

The Nex-Hys Project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economy as part of the WIPANO frame program, aimed to develop standards for safety characteristics of hybrid mixtures. These should be designed in a way that the standards are extended and the existing values in the experimental setup still hold true. As part of the project, the Otto-von-Guericke University focused on the Minimum Ignition Temperature. Starting from a comparison of apparatuses for liquids (EN 14522) and dusts (IEC 80079-20-2) the decision to use the Godbert Greenwald Oven was made, as only there the possibility to introduce substances in gaseous and solid phase is given in principle. The standardized setup was extended by a heated chamber to evaporate the liquids to be tested. Burnable gases were introduced into the system by means of mixing according to the partial pressure method in the pressurized air chamber or the evaporation chamber. Thus, it was possible to determine the MIT of the pure gases and vapors in the GG oven. Series of test for different substances under variation of the concentration show comparable values to the standard methods and to values found in literature. A trend to slightly higher temperatures (for gases and vapors) with a deviation close to the measurement uncertainty can be found. All in all, the deviation by different operators seems to be in the same range and cannot be neglected. Following various combinations of dust, vapors and gases were tested. Up to now, no combinatory effect was detected. This seems to be in contradiction to former own publications, but there the setup was different. This could be an explanation for these nonreproducible result. In all combinations, the MIT of the substances that has the lower MIT is dominating the final value. The setup-up generally proved to be able to test for the MIT of hybrid mixtures without violating existing values. Part of the tests were made in a GG oven of double length showing a clear influence on the MIT for some substances, due to the longer residence time. Apart from some rather practical weaknesses of the standardized setup there are general disadvantages that limit its use for a further development. First there is the totally unknow concentration and distribution of fuels in this open setup. Secondly, the subjective detection of the ignition by the operator. Third, the temperature distribution and heat transfer conditions that are not well defined. The original intention behind the experiment is not in line with the scientific intention to create a versatile instrument to determine the ignition temperature for all phases and their mixtures. Therefore, a completely new approach would be necessary. The existing MIT standards for dust and vapor/gases can further exist unchanged and fulfil their purpose.

Literary Translation as an Instrument of Slovenian Cultural Diplomacy with Particular Regard to Translations in German

Julija Rozman

The article discusses translation policy in Slovenia as part of the country’s cultural diplomacy. Translations of Slovenian literature, especially into German and English, are among the goals of the country’s cultural policy, in part because of Slovenia’s upcoming role as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2023. The article analyses the role of the financial support for and promotion of translations from Slovenian into foreign languages by the Slovenian Book Agency and the Trubar Foundation. The study of subsidies for translations into German, English, French, Italian, Croatian, and Hungarian shows that while the number of subsidies for translations into German and English is high, as expected, Croatian takes the leading role among the target languages studied. This underscores the importance of the still-vibrant social and political ties stemming from the historical context of Yugoslavia. In addition to the crucial role of subsidies in exporting literature from a peripheral language such as Slovenian, the translation process and the promotion of literature depend to a considerable extent on other market actors-as the interviews with three literary experts showed.

Kann das doch weg? Dealing with the German Modal Particle doch in Albanian Literary Texts’ Translation

Blertë İsmajli, Vjosa Hamiti

In linguistics, the translatability of the German modal particles is considered a popular study object, particularly because of their rendering in “particle-poor” languages. Thus, the present study examines the translatability of the modal particle doch in Albanian literary texts. Compared to German language, Albanian does not have a group of modal particles and can, therefore, be classified as a “particle-poor” language. In general, (inter)subjective language elements in Albanian, such as modal particles in this case, come to a full meaning only in the context of use. Therefore, the translation must take the context into account. When translating from German to a particle-poor language, other means of expression, such as morphological, prosodic patterns, or a combination of these elements, available in the language are chosen to express the particular modal nuance. These expressions can also include contextual-pragmatic means and the use of extra-linguistic factors such as intonation, voice pitch, sentence accent, gestures, and facial expressions. This empirical corpus analysis is based on two novels: Franz Kafka’s “The Trial” (Der Prozess) and Hermann Hesse’s “Siddhartha - A Poem of India” (Siddhartha – eine indische Dichtung), and their two sets of translations into Albanian. Examining two translations of the same literary text allows for a better understanding of the lexical and syntactical means used in Albanian to render the modal particle doch. During the corpus analysis, the translation equivalents of doch in Albanian were extracted and classified into omission, transposition, paraphrasing, and word-for-word translations, based on the common translation-theoretical definitions.

Falk Richter, pour un théâtre maniériste ?

Sylvie Arlaud

If “the image disrupts history” (G. Didi-Huberman), Falk Richter’s theatre seeks in its very material — i.e. the flux of our mediatized reality-data (photography, film, television, internet posts, advertisements) — the (political) disruption of our time and age. Montage, “dysposition” and dissemination are the main tools he uses to draw a reflexive and critical dimension out of these “pictures”. In the three productions analyzed in this article, Falk Richter displays the intermedial history of modern and postmodern theatre and renders our mediated mock-reality through Mannerism. Deceptive and hyperrealistic aesthetics, associated to the “in the face” school of political theatre force the spectator to acknowledge Richter’s own standing point, its history and (artistic, social, political) meaning.

Wells of Love and Hearts of Stone: Two Centuries of the Trenčín Legend in Slovak Literature

Charles Sabatos

The Ottoman invasions are among the most significant historical events in Central European literature as well as popular culture. An important example is the legendary „well of love“ at Trenčín Castle, supposedly dug by the Turkish Omar in order to free his beloved Fatima, held in captivity by Stephen Zápolya. Despite its setting in the 1490s, this story was first published in German in the early nineteenth century by Hungarian nobleman Alois Freiherrn von Mednyánszky, which inspired Slovak poetic adaptations of this tale by Karol Štúr (1844) and Mikuláš Dohnány (1846). The narrative was popularized in several collections of „historical“ tales set in Slovakia’s castles by twentieth-century authors such as Ľudovít Janota, Jozef Branecký, Jozef Horák and Ján Domasta, as well as in Jozef Nižnánsky’s historical novel The Well of Love (1935), which provides a concrete political background for the legend. Although the story’s events and characters (other than Zápolya) are fictional, it remains today one of the most enduring love stories in Slovak culture. This article will analyze the textual development of this legend in relation to evolving definitions of national identity over the last two centuries.

THE CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS

I Putu Budiarta

Number of international tourists visiting Bali, Indonesia, keeps increasing. They usually come from different countries and cultural background. Objective of this research is to introduce some cultural characteristics of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, American, German, Indonesian, and Balinese. Data of this literature review was based on some academic books and electronic data from internet. Data was collected by reviewing some books and articles and by observing the characteristics of resident’s culture. The result showed that the culture of tourists and the culture of residents are very different. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, and Balinese prefer collectivism or group to individualism but, Australian, American, and Germany prefer individualism to collectivism. Indonesian and Balinese like asking about religion, age, salary, and possession but Australian, American, and Germany don’t like asking about them. It is recommended that all tourism employees should know about the tourist’s cultural aspects so that no misunderstanding between the tourists and the residents.

Les manifestes artistiques en quête d’historiens de l’art

Antje Kramer-Mallordy

Starting from Manifesto, the 2016 Berlin video installation by the German artist Julian Rosefeldt, this article seeks to examine the manifesto in its double aspect: as artistic material and as an object of research. Recent studies, mainly French- and German-language, show a desire to enlarge the corpus of manifestos produced since the second half of the twentieth century in the fields of visual arts, literature, dance, cinema, as well as the new media. In so doing, these studies propose, on the one hand, subjective epistemological approaches, while at the same time reiterating earlier debates – dominated by literary studies – on the criteria of definition. While absent from these debates for a long period, art history could allow us to go beyond these legitimization discourses around the manifesto as an object of study, in order to nourish multidisciplinary dialogue through an analysis of its visual and historical aspects within a wider social history.

The Unfolding of Value Sources During Online Business Model Transformation

Nadja Hoßbach, Martin Wiener, Carol S. Saunders

Purpose: In the magazine publishing industry, viable online business models are still rare to absent. To prepare for the ‘digital future’ and safeguard their long-term survival, many publishers are currently in the process of transforming their online business model. Against this backdrop, this study aims to develop a deeper understanding of (1) how the different building blocks of an online business model are transformed over time and (2) how sources of value creation unfold during this transformation process. Methodology: To answer our research question, we conducted a longitudinal case study with a leading German business magazine publisher (called BIZ). Data was triangulated from multiple sources including interviews, internal documents, and direct observations. Findings: Based on our case study, we nd that BIZ used the transformation process to differentiate its online business model from its traditional print business model along several dimensions, and that BIZ’s online business model changed from an efficiency- to a complementarity- to a novelty-based model during this process. Research implications: Our findings suggest that different business model transformation phases relate to different value sources, questioning the appropriateness of value source-based approaches for classifying business models. Practical implications: The results of our case study highlight the need for online-offline business model differentiation and point to the important distinction between service and product differentiation. Originality: Our study contributes to the business model literature by applying a dynamic and holistic perspective on the link between online business model changes and unfolding value sources.

How to Listen to Pachamama’s Testimonio: Lessons from Indigenous Voices

Luis I Prádanos

This article analyzes the collective, open-access, and modifiable publication El Vivir Bien como respuesta a la Crisis Global as a posthumanist testimonio or ecotestimonio intending to give voice to the biotic community of the Andes. Written by Quechua and Aymara people and presented to the United Nations by the Plurinational State of Bolivia, this document targets the global ecological, financial, and social crises from the perspective of Indigenous knowledges. This document also exemplifies the worldwide reemergence of Indigenous voices that are confronting the global ecological crisis and its environmental injustices through the revitalization of Indigenous worldviews and practices. This ecotestimonio conveys, among many timely lessons, the Indigenous teaching that humans must listen carefully to the non-human world to learn from Pachamama how to interrelate as humans and with non-humans to collaborate in ensuring the continuing vitality of the community of life. If we listen carefully to Pachamama ’s testimony, as Indigenous voices urge, doubt must be cast upon the viability of ideas celebrated by hegemonic Western modern discourses like "development," "progress," or ‘"economic growth." Instead, these voices invite us to rethink the place, functions, and responsibilities of humans as members of the web of life.

Apes, Great Apes, and Mankind in 19th and early 20th Century German Literature

Tanja Nusser

Since the Middle Ages, apes have functioned as mirrors of humans. And to this day, we find that especially great apes act as unsettling doubles and distorted images of the human in literature and film, marking the porous border between the animalistic and the human. This article analyzes the depiction of apes in German literature in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It demonstrates that literary texts after Haeckel and Darwin picked up constellations and questions similar to those addressed in earlier texts, especially from the first half of the 19th century: In these texts, we face a human-ape relationship that is imagined as an act of imitation or ‘aping’ (Nachäffen). After a discussion of Darwin and Haeckel, the article will turn to texts by E.T.A Hoffmann, Wilhelm Hauff and Franz Kafka, authors who used images of apes to explore questions of enculturation, the idea of the cultivated human, and the act of imitation as a means to acquire culture.

Review: Maren Lorenz (2000). Leibhaftige Vergangenheit. Einführung in die Körpergeschichte [Corporeal Past. Introduction to Body History]

Tilmann Walter

The historian Maren LORENZ has written the first introductory book about "body history" in Germany. Based on a vast quantity of international and German scientific literature LORENZ discusses theoretical and political approaches and scientific topics represented in this field of research. Reprints of source material are also added to this survey. This book seems to be more useful for readers who are already involved in the field of body history (LORENZ's perspective appears however limited if judging from the feminist view. It is probably less suitable as an "introduction": theoretical positions are not presented in a way that can be easily understood leaving the novice readers such as students possibly even more confused.
