AI Self-Efficacy, Motivation, and Engagement Among STEM Learners: Mediating and Moderating Pathways to Perceived Mathematics Performance in Ghanaian Higher Education

Ebenezer Kwesi Lotey, Francis Ohene Boateng, Benedicta Ofosua

Performance in mathematics (PM) has become a progressively influential determinant for learners to navigate in various STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. Mathematics serves as the bedrock for science, art, technology, and engineering. For learners to build strong confidence and interest in these fields, the demand for highly acceptable mathematics perceived mathematics performance cannot be underestimated. This research explores students’ perceived mathematical performance through artificial intelligence (AI) self-efficacy and examines the interplay between motivation and engagement in AI usage and its impact on perceived mathematics performance. Sampling 528 students from a STEM-based program in Ghana, this study utilized “covariance-based structural equation modeling” (CB-SEM) to examine students’ AI self-efficacy, AI motivation, AI engagement, and perceived mathematics performance. The study’s results depicted that AI self-efficacy positively affects students’ motivation to use AI and significantly influences AI engagement, which subsequently impacts their perceived mathematics performance. Furthermore, students’ motivation for AI usage and their engagement with the tool mediate the link between AI self-efficacy and perceived performance. Both engagement and motivation in AI moderate the relationship between AI self-efficacy and performance. This investigation provides empirical evidence on how AI, if adapted ethically, might enhance students’ mathematics performance and improve the quality of mathematics concept retention through self-regulated learning or personalization. The results therefore offer insights into learner attitudes and behavioral intentions, while pointing to the need for future research connecting AI use with objective achievement data. For educational practice, the findings suggest that fostering AI self-efficacy through targeted training can create cascading benefits for motivation, engagement, and ultimately, perceived mathematics performance among STEM students.

The Posthuman Executive: AI-Driven Leadership and Automation in Thailand's Industry 4.0

Sid Terason, Chaithanaskorn Phawitpiriyakliti

This study investigates how industrial executives in Thailand's manufacturing sector navigate artificial intelligence integration into leadership practices. As AI systems increasingly participate in organizational decision-making, questions arise about how leaders experience shared authority with algorithmic agents and how cultural context shapes that experience. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 25 senior executives from medium- to large-scale manufacturing firms, this study employed thematic analysis within a constructivist paradigm to explore perceptions, strategies, and ethical considerations surrounding AI adoption. Four themes emerged: technological augmentation of human labor, transformed executive roles in AI-mediated decision-making, ethical and workforce challenges, and uneven readiness for technological transformation. The findings reveal a fundamental paradox: executives increasingly depend on AI for operational decisions while simultaneously resisting delegation of authority to machines. This tension reflects Thai cultural values including bun khun (reciprocal obligation) and kreng jai (reluctance to impose or cause discomfort). We propose pragmatic posthumanism as a concept capturing this liminal condition—where leaders functionally share agency with AI systems yet remain institutionally and culturally positioned as sole decision-makers. The hybrid-intelligence leadership framework emerges from these findings, integrating cognitive integration, ethical governance, and workforce adaptation as culturally embedded domains. This study contributes to leadership theory by demonstrating how AI-driven transformation unfolds differently across cultural contexts, challenges Western-centric assumptions about human-machine collaboration, and offers practical guidance for executives, policymakers, and educators navigating Industry 4.0 in Southeast Asia.

Putri BBK, Noer AH, Purba FD

Bernadette Btari Kania Putri, Afra Hafny Noer, Fredrick Dermawan Purba Department of Psychology, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor, West Java, IndonesiaCorrespondence: Bernadette Btari Kania Putri, Email bernadette20002@mail.unpad.ac.idAbstract: Anxiety is a common mental health disorder, with recent studies emphasizing a growing trend of appearance-related concerns among adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically examine psychological factors related to the prevention and intervention of anxiety disorder. The examination process comprised searching 7 databases for studies investigating psychological factors influencing appearance anxiety among adolescents. The review focused on primary studies published in English between 2014 and 2024, which measured appearance anxiety as a dependent variable. Additionally, a narrative synthesis was conducted on 22 studies that met the inclusion criteria. As a result, the review identified 4 domains of psychological factors influencing appearance anxiety, including 1) personal (eg social media addiction), 2) cognitive (eg value), 3) emotional (eg body shame), and 4) social factors (eg teasing). The findings showed a more complex pattern between these domains, particularly describing the way cognitive and emotional factors mediated the effect of social and personal factors on appearance anxiety. Within each domain, there was considerable homogeneity in the specific factors identified. Consequently, these findings showed the importance of focusing on cognitive and emotional factors in both prevention and intervention strategies for appearance anxiety. Future studies should include other populations, such as young adults and LGBTQ individuals. This is because studies have shown that appearance anxiety is prevalent in the groups, allowing for more generalized findings. Keywords: adolescents, appearance anxiety, psychological factors, systematic literature review
