Even though it is now clearly established that the rhetorical education model provides a relevant framework to question the methods and contents of a democratic citizenship education, this model still encounters difficulties in Europe for recognition as a valid pedagogical approach for working on critical thinking and citizenship skills. Based on the experience of a summer school entitled “European Citizenship and Rhetorical argumentation: the case of climate change”, we will try to answer the criticisms addressed to rhetoric and show how it can be used to develop citizenship skills nowadays.

The article examines in their context the discursive strategies used by the Italian Prime Minister (PM) Giuseppe Conte in his first speeches on Covid-19 to discursively build his legitimacy and his authority, while shedding light on the interdependence of the two concepts. A study of media interdiscourse reveals the constitutive character of the dialogical relationship between the speeches of the PM and the reactions in the press. The analysis shows that Conte's strategies for constructing legitimacy and authority evolve together in response to the counter-discourse of the media.

In The Book of Dolores, a series of self-portraits in photography and drawings with accompanying text, William T. Vollmann pictures himself as a cross-dresser. He uses various techniques that emphasize the pictorial approach of photography, to create an uncanny icon of femininity. As an attempt to reach the other side, not just of gender, but of life, his negative prints in particular seem to reveal a ghostly presence.

The Presses of University of Zaragoza, in his collection "Monografías de Filología Griega", No. 28, has published a new study on the presence of prophecy and oracular compositions in the work of Herodotus. Although there are already several studies on the oracles in this author, however the originality of the work lies in its particular distribution and classification of the oracular texts, contained in the Herodotus History, and its detailed analysis taking into account the Greek prophetic tradition.

Our research focuses on the government’s discursive strategy during the 2012 Maple Spring in Quebec, particularly on the formulas used to influence public opinion. Through a content analysis of 100 articles from five Quebec newspapers, we studied 152 formulas with regard to their distribution in time, the entities they targeted, the speakers who used them, and the framing strategies they conveyed. The analysis revealed several aspects, including the presence of multiple speakers and targets as part of the discursive strategy. The discourse and the formulas that were used sought to delegitimize the students, but also to frame the image of the government itself, and that of its political opponents. Eventually, the concept of formula allowed us to produce units of analysis that could be studied empirically with regard to framing, and to contribute to the analysis of the Maple Spring as a socio-discursive event.

V. Dolinin and D. Severiukhin are authors associated with the authoritative encyclopaedia Samizdat Leningrada (2003). Both were deeply involved in Samizdat publishing in Leningrad. Dolinin was arrested in 1982 and spent four years in prison. This article is a broad survey of the origins, development and values of Leningrad unofficial culture during the ‘classical’ period (1950s-1980s) of Soviet Samizdat.

IN THE MIDST of the composition renaissance, an odd fact stands out: our basic methods of teaching writing are the same ones English academics were using in the seventeenth century.' We still undertake to teach people to write primarily by dissecting and describing a completed piece of writing. The student is (a) exposed to the formal descriptive categories of rhetoric (modes of argumentdefinition, cause and effect, etc.-and modes of discourse-description, persuasion, etc.), (b) offered good examples (usually professional ones) and bad examples (usually his/her own) and (c) encouraged to absorb the features of a socially approved style, with emphasis on grammar and usage. We help our students analyze the product, but we leave the process of writing up to inspiration.2 Within the classroom, "writing" appears to be a set of rules and models for the correct arrangement of preexistent ideas. In contrast, outside of school, in private life and professions, writing is a highly goal-oriented, intellectual performance. It is both a strategic action and a thinking problem. But because writing as an act of thinking is messy and mysterious compared to the concrete reality of the product, we tend to leave composing up to the vagaries of chance and god-given talent to relegate it to independent warm-up exercises designated as "pre-writing."' The inner, intellectual process of composing, the complex and

Leon Festinger’s account of cognitive dissonance, published in 1957, has become one of the most successful theories in the history of social psychology. I argue that Festinger’s framework—and the research it generated over the last sixty years—can shed light on key aspects of readers’ engagement with literary characters. Literature can invite the audience to vicariously experience characters’ dissonance through an empathetic mechanism, but it can also induce dissonant states in readers by encouraging them to take on attitudes and beliefs that are significantly different from their own. I suggest that there are two strategies—or patterns of reader-response—through which the audience can cope with the dissonance between their own worldview and the characters’: attitude change and imaginative resistance. In the first, readers adjust their own beliefs and values according to what they have experienced and learned in adopting characters’ perspectives. By contrast, in imaginative resistance readers’ worldview prevents them from establishing an empathetic bond with characters. I integrate these hypotheses into a model that builds on theoretical as well as empirical insights into reader-response.

The poetic tradition has established the so-called adlocutio sponsalis at the end of the epithalamia as a common topic. Here the poet, or a divinity (frequently the goddess Venus), adresses the couple to incite them to sexual union and to wish them everlasting love, harmony, happiness, prosperity and descendants. The epideictic rhetoric for the nuptial subject already prescribed the orator to wish these desiderata, especially gathered in a prayer to the gods. In the Latin epithalamia of the 15th-16th centuries we can see some variations of the adlocutio ─sometimes shaped as a Christian prayer─ that emphasize the laudatory features inherited from Antiquity.

The Essais’s writing generates a form of original pyrrhonian philosophical discourse, apt to express the infinite variety of the world. In this way it paves the way to a limitless method of investigation: zetetics.
