Mastering Digital Media Literacy of Muslim Woman's Activists in Preventing Online Gender-Based Violence

This article tends to analyze how Muslim women's activists, who are the members of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Fatayat NU in Kediri and Yogyakarta, build their digital literacy to prevent violence in social media. Mainly due to the digital divide between men and women, which causes imbalance and injustice when they access digital media. The method used in data collection was semi-ethnographic, in which the researcher participated in observing research objects when carrying out activities using digital technology, interviews, and documentation on 3 members of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Fatayat NU, both in Jogja and Kediri. The research findings show that what has been stigmatized to women so far is that they are powerless to master information and communication technology, which does not apply to members of Fatayat NU and Nasyiatul Aisyiyah. This research shows that women are also reliable in accessing the internet for the benefit of empowering women, especially KBGO issues. This research has provided a different understanding of the phenomenon of the massive use of internet-based technology by female activists

Fostering language learning strategies through comparative linguistics: future directions for Azerbaijani higher education

The purpose of the study is to examine the motivation for using comparative linguistics methods, namely the methodology of the comparative language approach in English classes at Baku State University (BSU), and to show the levels of typological errors among students. In the paper an analysis of related literature was used. Among the sources that contained the key terms of the presented work, 30 were selected in order to describe the issue in the broadest possible way. In addition, for the practical part of the work, elements of comparative linguistics in the study of English among first-year students of the Faculty of Germanic Philology at the BSU were used. Students were divided into 2 groups. One of them studied English based on the tenets of comparative linguistics. The novelty lies in the fact that usually in the linguistic environment such subjects as comparative linguistics are introduced at the senior courses. The results of the study showed that based on the comparative linguistic method in the didactics of teaching a foreign language, bilingual students perceive the acquisition of English based on the comparison of sounds, morphemes, and lexemes at the associative level with their native language (despite the fact that Azerbaijani belongs to another group of languages) and has a systemic flexibility. Initially, one relied on the developed didactic methods of comparative linguistics. The final module showed better results for Group 2. The conclusions indicate that typological errors among BSU students are language “noise”. However, phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic errors can be eliminated through comparative didactics in foreign language teaching. It improves the general cognitive and metacognitive applicants’ abilities, strengthens their understanding of their native language, strengthens reading and writing, and develops general communication skills. So, the methodology of the comparative language approach is active, participatory, and motivating.

On the prospects of corpus research and the practice of its application in linguistics

Описываются основополагающие положения корпусной лингвистики в рамках отечественного и зарубежного языкознания. Проводится классификация лингвистических корпусов различных типов и обзор их инструментария. Рассматриваются проблемы анализа массива текстовых данных и индивидуальных текстовых корпусов. Проводится статистический анализ объема публикаций в наукометрических базах данных. Делаются выводы о перспективах корпусных методик в современных языковых исследованиях. The study aims to analyze main fields of modern corpus research and their application in modern linguistics and philology. The fundamentals of corpus linguistics in the framework of domestic and foreign linguistics are described. The study provides classification of linguistic corpora of various types and a review of their tools. The problems of analyzing an array of text data and individual text corpora are considered. The study carries out statistical analysis of the volume of publications in scientometric databases. The prospects of corpus methods in modern language studies have been summarized.

Professional training in applied linguistics in the system of higher education in Ukraine: content characteristics

The article discusses professional training in applied linguistics in the higher education system of Ukraine. Much emphasis is placed on the content characteristics of such training. Its aim is to analyze and justify the content of professional training in applied linguistics in the higher education system of Ukraine. As one can see, linguistic globalization and internationalization of applied linguistics, as well as the rapid development of ICT, create the need for specialists who can design effective algorithms and methods of processing automatic text, creating automated and machine translation technologies, conducting research activities related to the skillful use of information systems. In Ukraine, linguistics is viewed as a discipline studied within the framework of philology, rather than as an independent specialty/specialization, which, in turn, significantly slows down its development and narrows its scientific potential. The specialization «Applied Linguistics» reveals the specifics of linguistics/applied linguistics, updates current demands of science and helps adjust professional training in applied linguistics to relevant standards of leading countries. A detailed analysis of corresponding university curricula shows that the content of degree programmes in applied linguistics involves mastering natural-scientific, professional-practical, humanities-related and socio-economic courses, courses chosen by each university independently, as well as optional courses. The content of degree programmes in applied linguistics is structured based on linguistic, translation-oriented, literary and combined approaches. Further research lies in studying the features of blended learning in applied linguistics in the leading countries of Europe. The review presents the monograph by Anastasia V. Urzha, Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philology, Lomonosov Moscow State University. The monograph is focused on the phenomenon of grounding in a narrative, on the means and devices affecting reader’s attention, on the principles of foregrounding and backgrounding the information in a text. For the first time Russian and foreign traditions of studying grounding in a narrative are presented and compared in detail. The classic and the newest works in the sphere of narratology, linguistics, cognitive and translation studies are taken into account. Also the monograph presents author’s view of salient structure of a narrative exploring various functions of egocentric units in it. The book accumulates the results of research carried out by A.V. Urzha on the material of numerous original texts in English and their Russian translations.

Scandinavian and Dutch philology at St. Petersburg/ Leningrad University

In the 19th — early 20th centuries at St. Petersburg University, Scandinavian philology was understood as the study of Old Norse literary works, mostly in connection with the history of Russia, there was no teaching of modern languages. The first Scandinavian language, Swedish, was taught for the first time in 1935 and they began to actively study the Scandinavian languages. The Norwegian department was opened in 1945, the Danish in 1947. A great contribution to the scientific study of various aspects of Scandinavian languages was made by the scientific and organizational activities of professor M. I. Steblin-Kamensky, who published numerous works on Scandinavian linguistics, as well as on medieval literature and mythology. He initiated the creation of the country’s first department of Scandinavian philology at Leningrad University in 1958, which he headed for 30 years. The founder of Swedish linguistics was S. S. Maslova-Lashanskaya, author of the most important works. V. P. Berkov created a whole library with his works on the Norwegian language. He is recognized as one of the world’s largest lexicographers, a specialist in bilingual dictionaries. The Scandinavists who worked at the department in different years made a significant contribution to science. In 1972, the Dutch/Netherlands branch was opened, which in a short time showed great scientific potential. Professor I. M. Mikhailova, the author of numerous publications in the field of Dutch linguistics and literary criticism, is the head of the department of Scandinavian and Dutch Philology.

The theory of elliptic sentences in domestic Russian philology: A systematic review

The aim of the review is to summarise scientific knowledge on the theory of elliptic sentences in Russian grammar. At the same time, the author identifies two main areas in the study of elliptic sentences based on the degree of their independence as syntactic forms. The paper examines the main problems of the theory of incompleteness and ellipticity in linguistics from its inception to the present, analyses the scientific and educational literature on this issue, assesses the current state and current issues of the theory of ellipsis. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the conducted review systematises research on the problem from a new perspective and also determines the current state of the issue. As a result of examining the evolution of Russian linguists’ views on the problem of syntactic incompleteness, relevant structural and semantic features of an elliptic sentence were identified. The review shows that modern linguistics has developed an understanding, on the one hand, of the semantic and structural self-sufficiency of an elliptic sentence and, on the other hand, of its fundamental difference from incomplete speech forms.

Embracing AI-Based Education: Perceived Social Presence of Human Teachers and Expectations About Machine Teachers in Online Education

Technological advancements in education have turned the idea of machines as teachers into a reality. To better understand this phenomenon, the present study explores how college students develop expectations (or anticipations) about a machine teacher, particularly an AI teaching assistant. Specifically, the study examines whether students’ previous experiences with online courses taught by a human teacher would influence their expectations about AI teaching assistants in future online courses. An online survey was conducted to collect data from college students in the United States. Findings indicate that positively experienced social presence of a human teacher helps develop positive expectations about an AI teaching assistant. The study provides meaningful implications and contributions to our understanding of a machine agent in education.

Speak Global, Sell Local? Digital Linguistic Landscape of Local Small Businesses in the Social Media

This paper focuses on the online presence of languages and linguistic patterns of local small businesses in a bilingual, HungarianRomanian ethnic community in Romania. By capturing linguistic diversity and creativity via netnographic research, patterns of linguistic landscape elements in the social media, such as marketing strategy of local small businesses, can be analysed. The findings suggest that despite the need to advertise by using the state language, Romanian, in order to maximize the target audience, the concentration of Hungarian landscape elements is the highest. Businesses construct their linguistic identity by their language choices and practices, aligned with the collective linguistic identity of a bilingual community and the need for a global representation, in order to secure a place in the local market.

Theorizing race, marginalization, and language in the digital media

Digitization of the communication medium has transformed the mute, marginalized ‘audience’ into a heterogeneous and credible content ‘producer.’ Drawing on this dynamics and operation of the digital media, it has urged the need to re-theorize ‘marginalization’ and ‘race.’ Hence, this paper critiques the digital-media tool, blogs, using a rhetoric-textual analysis method and critical discourse analysis method for the fictional text, Americanah. These methods employ the psychoanalytical-Althusserian critique of Adichie’s fictional narrative, Americanah. In the psychoanalytical sense, blog-writing can qualify as a mechanism of ‘sublimation’ in the post-modern world. In the Althusserian sense, blogs become persuasive mechanisms for a subject’s interpellation into non-dominant ideology. Among the plethora of marginalized global communities, African-Americans are enormously embracing the virtual communication trends for socio-political motives. This paper theorizes the correlations between race-related blogging, psychoanalytic sublimation, and the socio-political repudiation of power structure by employing the literary text as material evidence. Accordingly, the literary study has concluded that digital-mediums (i.e., in this case, political blogs) can depose the power vested in the ideological-state-apparatuses and impose a high potential for expression of unrestrained, credible, and democratic voice of the marginalized. It also validates that blogs/blogging influences and moulds national/political/racial discourses by lending a liberated voice and context-independent perspective to the racially oppressed.

Готический роман в английской литературе XVIII–XIX вв.

В конце XVI – начале XVIII вв. шел процесс расширения Британской империи, вследствие чего английский язык, англоязычная литература начали распространяться по всему миру. Возникший во второй половине XVIII в. жанр готических романов в Соединенном Королевстве отличался своей неповторимостью и уникальным характером. В статье дается краткий обзор особенностей готического романа, а также жизни и творчества Мэри Шелли, Анны Радклиф, Мэтью Григория Льюиса и Джейн Остин, которые внесли свой вклад в развитие жанра готического романа в английской литературе XVIII–XIX вв. Готический роман, появившийся в английской литературе в конце XVIII – начале XIX вв., оказал влияние на произведения выдающихся писателей всех последующих периодов. Описание сверхъестественных существ, таинственных приключений, фантастика и мистические элементы в готическом романе наполняли читателя ужасом и страхом. Жанр готического романа, известный в некоторых источниках как «черный роман», широко развит, прежде всего, в английской литературе. Готические романы играют важную роль не только в английской, но и в мировой литературе. Они оказали значительное влияние на дальнейшее развитие многих литературных направлений, как в Европе, так и в других частях света. Возникновение этого жанра связано с особенностями развития английского общества XVIII в., социально-экономической и духовной жизнью, культурными ценностями и самосознанием людей, живших в этом обществе. Кроме того, изображение необычных событий и явлений, чувств героев является также отражением восприятия обществом новых направлений в капиталистическом развитии Англии. Речь идет о научных открытиях и промышленном развитии на их основе.

The Question of Motivation in Nest-Oriented Description of Dialectal Word Formation (Using the Example of the Orava Dialect) The paper discusses word formation’s most important notion, i.e. the motivation, in respect to nestoriented descriptions. The first part presents the difficulties which arise in the traditional, as well as in the nest-oriented description of word formation of general Polish (mutual motivation, multiple motivations, indirect and direct motivation, base and accompanying motivation, equivalent motivation). In the second part, these problems of motivation, resulting from the specificity of dialectal material, are being discussed. This part also formulates methodological suggestions about the creation of certain nests which are more difficult to analyse. The final part tackles the question of mutual dependence between the model of word formation, and the speaker’s word formation intuition (awareness, competence).

NEED ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH FOR TOUR AND TRAVEL DEPARTMENT OF VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN BENGKULU CITY

This research aimed to investigate the English needs of Tour and Travel Department at Vocational High School Negeri 1 and Vocational High School Negeri 7 in Bengkulu City. The research used mixed method and convergent parallel design. The sample of this research consisted of three groups of respondents. First group was students, consisted of 28 active students and 4 alumni. Second group was English teachers, consisted of 2 English teachers. The third group was stakeholders, consisted of two heads of the Tour and Travel Department, two assistances of curriculum, hotel, and tour staffs. The data of this research were gathered by using adapted questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively and interview was analyzed qualitatively. The data were combined by using convergent parallel design. Results of this research indicated that listening and speaking are the two prioritized skills needed by the tour and travel department. Topics of speaking which has the greatest importance are flight reservation, prices and payment, tourist destination, tourist attraction, direction, and booking hotels. Topics of listening which has the greatest importance are flight reservation, booking hotels, direction, job interview, complaints, and cultural tourism.  Topics of reading which has the greatest importance are memos, letters, cultural tourism, handling a complaint, and tourism terms. Topics of writing which has the greatest importance are rules and regulation, instruction.

Práticas de linguagem no contexto de internacionalização em um instituto federal

A partir do suporte teórico-metodológico da sociologia do discurso do Círculo de Bakhtin (BAKHTIN, 2016; VOLÓCHINOV, 2017), no que toca especialmente à questão da expressividade, em diálogo com a abordagem glotopolítica (GUESPIN, MARCELLESI, 1986), este texto busca tecer algumas reflexões em torno do objeto de estudo práticas de linguagem em placas de sinalização em espaços físicos escolar. Toma-se por base o contexto de internacionalização em um instituto federal tecnológico, com o intuito de compreender, por meio de uma lente discursivo-dialógica, quais os efeitos glotopolíticos implicados em práticas dessa natureza. Assume-se que essas práticas atuam como uma forma de intervenção política na paisagem linguística escolar (SPOLSKY, 2004), sendo fruto, portanto, de escolhas nada aleatórias, decisões tomadas aprioristicamente que, no caso do material analisado, dá a ver a opção por quais línguas privilegiar nas placas de sinalização nos ambientes dessa instituição, bem como a ordem de prioridade em que elas tendem a se inscrever nas placas em análise.

LINGUISTICS OF NATIONAL SOCIALIST GERMANY AS A PHENOMENON OF “TOTALITARIAN” LINGUISTICS

The article is devoted to linguistics in national socialist Germany, which is considered in accordance with the author’s theory of “totalitarian” linguistics. A narrative method of linguo-historiography is used that allows recreating an objective picture of this historical period without the clichéd assessment. The author analyzes authentic material - articles of the German linguists working in the context of the ideology of National Socialism. The obtained results testify to the great influence of totalitarian ideology on the development of linguistics.

Pembelajaran Public Speaking di Pondok Pesantren untuk Moderasi Indonesia

This study focused on public speaking learning process for Indonesian moderation located at An Najah, Al Amin and Darussalam as pesantren partners of IAIN Purwokerto. Public Speaking learning process in pesantren has been conducted for long period of time and it has distinctive characters to be studied. This study is using explorativephenomenological methodology to uncovered this learning process. Data is collected using observation, interview and documentation. Result shows that public speaking and speaking techniques in general is mandatory subject for An Najah, Al Amin dan Darussalam. The objectives of Public speaking learning in those three pesantren is that the students could conveyed Islamic value and religion effectively. Public speaking is conducted in many methods and activities, such as muhadharah, discussion, role play on many programs and events where santri has responsibilities and authority for managing the process. There are differences in practising muhadharah on those three pesantrens. There are also workshops hosted by experts. With that the process of public speaking learning is more in practical way without theoretical-conceptual background. This results in public speaking theoretical concepts is rarely mastered, whereas pesantren is well known for its rich oral speech tradition.

HUBUNGAN ANTARA KECERDASAN SPIRITUAL DENGAN KEPRIBADIAN SANTRI PONDOK PESANTREN AL HIDAYAH KARANGSUCI PURWOKERTO

This study was based on the realization that, the students are people who are steeped in the teachings of Islam. With that being religious teachings they learned, it will make intelligent students of spiritually. Spiritual intelligence possessed of students is expected to shape the personality of students. Issues raised in this study is the relationship between spiritual intelligence with personality students of al-Hidayah Boarding School in Karangsuci Purwokerto. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between spiritual intelligence with personality Al Hidayah Boarding School students Karangsuci Purwokerto or not. This type of research is a field research with quantitative approach to examine the population or a particular sample. The sample was 111 students. Data collection techniques used in this study are observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. While data analysis is by using Product Moment Correlation analysis. Based on the research conducted, the conclusion about the relationship between spiritual intelligence with personalitystudents of Al Hidayah Boarding School Karangsuci Purwokerto, namely 1) The calculation result obtained Rxy around 0,729 or (Rxy = 0.729). 2) The result of that has been found (Rxy = 0,729) then consulted with the value of r table (rt) contained in the table of product moment. It can be known by using the test significance level of 5% and 1%. 3) test significance level of 5% were Rxy value greater than the value of rt or (0.729 > 0.195). Test significant level of 1% Rxy is greater than the value of rt or (0.729 > 0.256). The authors propose the hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, Ha, which reads “There is Relationship Between Spiritual Intelligence With Boarding School Pupils personality AlHidayah Karangsuci Purwokerto” is acceptable as truth.   Artikel ini dilatarbelakangi dari kesadaran bahwa seorang santri merupakan orang yang sedang mendalami ajaran agama Islam. Dengan ajaran agama yang sedang ia pelajari tersebut, nantinya akan menjadikan santri cerdas secara spiritual. Kecerdasan spiritual yang dimiliki santri ini diharapkan dapat membentuk kepribadian santri. Permasalahan yang diangkat dalam artikel ini adalah adakah hubungan antara kecerdasan spiritual dengan kepribadian santri Pondok Pesantren Al Hidayah Karangsuci Purwokerto. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya hubungan antara kecerdasan spiritual dengan kepribadian santri Pondok Pesantren Al Hidayah Karangsuci Purwokerto. Penelitian lapangan (field research) ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif untuk meneliti pada populasi atau sampel tertentu. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 111 santri. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan observasi, angket, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Analisis data menggunakan analisis korelasi Product Moment. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan, diperoleh kesimpulan mengenai hubungan antara kecerdasan spiritual dengan kepribadian santri Pondok Pesantren Al Hidayah Karangsuci Purwokerto, yaitu 1) Hasil perhitungan yang diperoleh rxysebesar 0,729 atau (rxy= 0,729). 2). Hasil yang telah ditemukan yaitu (rxy= 0,729) kemudian dikonsultasikan dengan nilai r tabel (rt) yang terdapat pada tabel product moment. Hal tersebut dapat diketahui dengan menggunakan uji taraf signifikan yakni 5% dan 1%. 3) dari uji taraf signifikan 5% ternyata nilai rxy lebih besar dari nilai rt atau (0,729 > 0,195). Dari uji taraf signifikan 1% rxy lebih besar dari nilai rt atau (0,729 > 0,256). Hipotesis yang penulis ajukan (Ho) ditolak maka Ha yang berbunyi “Ada hubungan antara kecerdasan spiritual dengan kepribadian santri Pondok Pesantren Alhidayah Karangsuci Purwokerto” diterima kebenarannya.
