Events in the world of encyclopedias

Oleh Savchenko

In this communication, we provide an overview of two international events in the field of encyclopedic studies and lexicography that took place in 2025. These include the International Encyclopedia Conference in Rome, organized by the Treccani Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, which brought together representatives of leading national encyclopedic projects from Europe and around the world. The discussions focused on the challenges and strategies for developing encyclopedic resources in the digital age, the integration of artificial intelligence, the modernization of editorial practices, and the role of encyclopedias in fostering critical thinking and digital literacy. The conference emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the preservation of scholarly standards in a rapidly evolving global information environment. The second event—the LETS 2025 International Seminar, organized by Universiti Putra Malaysia—was dedicated to preserving and revitalizing linguistic heritage through digital technologies. Its program covered a wide range of topics, from innovations in lexicography and terminology to corpus-based studies, machine translation, mobile applications, and the documentation of minority languages. Special attention was given to presentations addressing the status of encyclopedias as authoritative sources of knowledge and the interplay between traditional and technological approaches in contemporary humanities. Both events underscored the growing role of encyclopaedics and lexicography in shaping the digital knowledge infrastructure and sustaining intercultural dialogue.

The Holocaust Encyclopedia as a phenomenon of contemporary digital encyclopedism

Vladyslav Mukha, Andrii Kudrіachenko

In the era of global digital communication, encyclopedic resources have become vital instruments of humanities education and historical memory. A successful example is the Holocaust Encyclopedia of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum—a digital platform that combines the functions of a reference work, an archive, an educational resource, and a space for public reflection. The purpose of this article is to examine this resource as a phenomenon of contemporary encyclopedic culture. The study employs descriptive-analytical and historiographic methods, combining an analysis of scholarly publications with a structural and functional review of the Holocaust Encyclopedia itself. It demonstrates that the project has undergone several stages of development—from an electronic museum tool in the 1990s to a modern multimedia encyclopedia. Today, the resource includes nearly one thousand articles in English, some of which have been translated into nineteen languages, including Ukrainian. Owing to its well-designed content strategy, multimedia features, and interactive tools, it has become one of the most influential online resources on the Holocaust. Its materials are easily discoverable within the Ukrainian digital space. The article outlines prospects for creating a similar digital project in Ukraine, noting that the Holocaust Encyclopedia may serve as a methodological and technological model for future Ukrainian initiatives that combine academic rigor, educational purpose, and openness to a global audience.

Regional, Ideological and Inheritable Characteristics of Knowledge: A Survey of Three Compilations of Buddhist Encyclopedias in China from 1950s to 2000s

Wenli Fan

Three official compilations of Buddhist encyclopedias were undertaken in China between the 1950s and 2000s. A sociological examination of these compilations reveals notable characteristics of the Buddhist knowledge system. Firstly, the production of knowledge manifests distinct regional attributes; it is not a process of standardization or objectification, but reflects local idiosyncrasies determined by its place of origination. Secondly, the majority of modern encyclopedia compilations are integral to the construction of national knowledge systems; hence, a nation’s ideological tendencies profoundly influence the articulation of knowledge. Lastly, knowledge is transferred through two mediums: texts and people. Given the immutability of classical knowledge and the consistency of knowledge producers during this period, the results of the three compilations exhibit numerous commonalities.

Reflection of the problem «Burns» in the publications of Russian surgeons in the XIX – early XX centuries

V. A. Sokolov, S. A. Mamaeva, Y. L. Butrin

In modern scientific literature, the opinion is firmly established: «... a systematic study of burn injury in our country began in the mid-30s of the XX century». How historically accurate is it? This fact determined the relevance of the study of the Russian medical periodicals on the topic «Burns» for the period of the XIX – early XX centuries. The obtained data testify to the active work of Russian specialists not only in the study of the peculiarities of local and general manifestations of burn injury, but also in the development of diagnostic and treatment methods. They collected and analyzed the statistics of burns of various etiologies, under various conditions of human life, and also carried out experimental work. They published the obtained results in various medical publications: newspapers, magazines, manuals, encyclopedias, etc., which were published on the territory of the Russian Empire. Our doctors have formulated a number of fundamental conclusions that are not disputed by anyone in the 21st century. For example: even superficial first-degree burns, manifested only by hyperemia and moderate edema of the skin, with a large lesion area can lead to death, in contrast to skin inflammatory diseases characterized by similar local manifestations and proceeding relatively favorably for the general condition of a person. In addition, it became clear that the pathology under consideration should be treated by a doctor who knows its features and optimal treatment methods. Otherwise, long-term wounds can be fatal at a time when the threat to the victim’s life seemed to have passed. Experimental studies conducted since the middle of the 19th century have not only strengthened the evidence base of research works, contributed to the writing and defense of thematic dissertations, and had a significant impact on the scientifically grounded development of new methods of treatment.

Obraz Karla Klostermanna v české (literární) historiografii // Reflection of Karel Klostermann in Czech (literary) historiography

Michal Hořejší

The article deals with the problem of representation of an author Karel Klostermann (1848–1923) and his novels in Czech literary-historical handbooks, editorial prefaces, and encyclopedias. The article exposes the way in which Czech literary historiography works with the myth of Karel Klostermann as a documentarist of the ‘old Bohemian Forest’ (Šumava in Czech). An analysis of the above three distinct text types reveals that Klostermannʼs central topic — an unprecedented windstorm that had terminated the ‘original Bohemian Forest’ — is mostly seen not as a motive but as the fact (as well as in the recent discourse on Bohemian Forest National Park). However, the concepts of ‘monumental and naturally stable forest’ or ‘sudden epochal break’ were paradoxically known only from the novels of Karel Klostermann, who worked with them inconsistently. The article shows that Czech literary historiography does not deal with Klostermann’s fiction critically but rather replicates common stereotypes and dominant narrative about the past of the Bohemian Forest.

Termination as the Basis for Classification of Document Texts

Marina V. Kosova, Roza R. Sharipova

This article discusses the principles of classification of document texts from the point of view of records management and document linguistics; studies features of the terms of fixing the scope of the text (ambiguity, the presence of a strict definition, independent of context) and the scope of the operation (formal and substantial variability and others.); characterizes the specificity of multiple meanings, synonyms and variants of the terms used in the document texts; indicates the factors influencing the selection of the term for the document text. The authors propose to identify the main types of document texts in terms of terminological vocabulary representation and allocate mixed-type texts along with term-using (scientific, technical documents, secondary documents, etc.), term-fixing (standards, terminological dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauri, classifications, etc.), and term-generating (documents or scientific texts devoted to document studies). The article presents the regulation as a document text of mixed type in terms of the use of terminological units. We give a definition of the regulation as the document, which is characterized by its form, the features of compositional structure and content of speech organization of the text; we also analyze the terminology of the field this document, structure recorded therein terminological units. Regulation is defined as a term-using, term-fixing, and a termgenerating text.

From Textual Reception to Textual Codification: Thessalos and the Quest for Authenticity

Spyros Piperakis

This article examines the content of the De Virtutibus Herbarum, an astrological herbal manual by Thessalos which displays the healing and marvelous properties of plants that correspond by means of sympatheia with the twelve zodiacal signs and the seven planets.* In particular, the article aims to demonstrate two scholarly points: 1) the dependence of the treatise upon already formulated rhizotomic and astrological ‘encyclopedias’ through a comparative analysis of some intertextual examples derived from various authoritative writings; and 2) the departure of the manual’s preface from this existing tradition in order to highlight its textual authenticity.
