Educational myths among teachers: prevalence and refutational intervention for belief change

Yeliz Tunga, Berkan Celik, Kursat Cagiltay

Abstract Educational myths tend to be very popular among teachers worldwide, and they have the potential to mislead teachers in their instructional decisions and practices. Following a comprehensive and holistic approach, this study, firstly, aims to reveal the prevalence of educational myths among in-service teachers, the channels through which these myths disseminate among teachers, and their impact on teachers’ professional practices. Secondly, this study assesses the effectiveness of three distinct refutation text types (refutation-only, refutation with explanation, and refutation with anecdotal explanation) in altering teachers’ beliefs concerning educational myths. The study employed mixed method research with 518 primary and middle school teachers participating. Data were collected using surveys with close and open-ended questions. An experiment involving 132 teachers, divided into three groups (refutation-only, n = 41; refutation with anecdotal explanation, n = 45; and refutation with explanation, n = 46), was conducted to change teachers’ beliefs in educational myths. Results indicated that educational myths are common among teachers, with multiple intelligences, learning styles, and violent digital games being the most prevalent. The primary dissemination channels of myths are teachers’ undergraduate education. Teachers often consider educational myths in their lessons and other educational activities. The study also revealed that anecdotal interventions are more effective in dispelling myths. The significant takeaway from this study is that educational myths are commonly accepted by the teachers, and it is very difficult to change their beliefs after they were exposed to them. The study highlights the persistence of educational myths and the challenges in debunking them, suggesting implications for teacher training and evidence-based professional development.

Caractérisation des risques agroclimatiques liés à la culture du maïs (Zea mays) au nord du Togo sous la variabilité climatique

Sinandja DIYANI, Issaka LONA

An innovative high-frequency statistical arbitrage in Chinese futures market

Chengying He, Tianqi Wang, Xinwen Liu et al.

The primary use of futures is hedging risk. Traders in the spot market can hedge certain risks through the futures market. With the development of the futures market, the arbitrage transactions around futures have attracted increasingly attention. The aim of this paper is to establish an innovative and unique pairs trading framework, and use it to test the effectiveness of China's futures market. The framework for pairs trading is based on cointegration test, Kalman filter and Hurst index filtering. We use the data of 47 commodities with relatively good liquidity in the Chinese commodity futures market. We apply the representative index of China's commodity futures market, ''Wenhua Commodity Index'' as the benchmark, to evaluate the performance of the strategy and compare it with the benchmark model. This study found that, according to the pairs trading framework, after considering transaction costs, the cumulative return in the sample reached 81%, the cumulative return out of the sample was 21%. It is worth noting that the out-of-sample maximum drawdown achieved excellent results of no more than 1%. In the same period, trading the Wenhua Commodity Index with a ''buy and hold'' strategy achieved a gain of 31%, but with maximum drawdown reached 15%. The values of our paper are, first it proves that Chinese commodity futures market is not a weak-form efficient market, because technical analysis based on machine learning could obtain excess returns. Second, this research combines the theory and practice of statistical arbitrage, which also provides guiding significance for investment practice.

Influence of motivational factors on knowledge sharing methods and knowledge creation process in an emerging economic context

Neda Azizi, Peyman Akhavan, Ali Ahsan et al.

The present study aims to extend our understanding of motivational factors that improve the knowledge sharing intention of employees thereby can lead to creating knowledge successfully. Specifically, we aim to extend previous knowledge management research to contribute to both knowledge sharing theory and knowledge creation process with consideration of motivational factors including socialization, externalization, combination and internalization. This study has used quantitative research methodology wherein the data have been collected from 405 students from various universities in Iran using a survey questionnaire. Structural equation modelling has been applied to test the hypotheses of the study. The findings of the study reveal that motivational factors positively influence knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. Results reveal that motivational factors tend to increase the usage of knowledge sharing methods, and consequently, they impact on the creation process of knowledge. Further, motivational factors act as a mediator between knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. This study has limitations that present opportunities for future research. First, the research context covered people from universities only, which limits the generalizability of findings. Second, we did not consider regional cultural differences, which could cause variations in people’ knowledge sharing intention. Future studies can build upon the research models to understand the influence of the cultural factors on other type of organisations. This research contributes to both knowledge sharing theory and knowledge creation process with consideration of motivational factors including socialization, externalization, combination and internalization. Thus, the study provides directions to managers to focus on cognitive social aspects (i.e., motivational factors) to encourage the people to share and create knowledge. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this study is an early study conducted to examine the influence of motivational factors on knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. This research provides valuable information and guidelines that will be helpful for the managers to consider the important issues during knowledge creation establishment in the universities and organizations which are directly involved with creating knowledge.

Model Predictive Control–Based Load-Frequency Regulation of Grid-Forming Inverter–Based Power Systems

Xiaojing Qi, Jianyong Zheng, Fei Mei

The high-penetrated renewables enable flexible and versatile dispatchable resources in power systems. As the digitalization process improves with the help of information and communication technology (ICT), a real-time online control framework is essential to regulate such a low-inertia power system dominated by renewables. To enable control practices, a control-oriented model is developed linking load increments to frequency dynamics. Based on such a control-oriented model, a model predictive control (MPC)–based online feedback algorithm is well designed by the virtue of rapid data transmission enabled by digitalization. The MPC optimization is a convex quadratic programming, where an objective function that balances frequency deviations and load increments is formulated and operational constraints are integrated into a matrix-type inequality. In the end, the proposed MPC-based load-frequency control framework is illustrated by several case studies, where validations and analyses of constraints inside the model are also included.

Détection automatique des parcelles sur les plans napoléoniens : comparaison de deux méthodes

Jean-Michel Follin, Élisabeth Simonetto, Anthony Chalais

The most detailed geographic description of France’s whole 19th-century territory is the Napoleonic cadastre. It contains a wealth of information (e.g. cadastre lot structure, lot numbering, rivers and road shapes, toponymy, buildings…) which underpin most historical studies of land usage and transformation. We therefore decided to develop a semi-automatic toolchain able to vectorise, georeference and combine scanned old cadastre sheets in order to build a multi-epoch database describing land property. In this article, we focus on the automatic vectorisation of the parcels’ shapes and assess the respective merits of two methods we tested: the first based on the Probabilistic Hough Transform (PHT) and the second on the Line Segment Detector (LSD) algorithm. After explaining how we implemented these two methods, we present the results, which show that the LSD approach performs better on the oldest cadastre sheets.

Nain, Mam and Me: Historical artefacts as prompts for reminiscence, reflection and conversation about feeding babies. A qualitative development study

Historical artefacts can act as distancing objects, encouraging neutral discussion around sensitive topics that involve personal decision-making. Infant feeding is an example of a sensitive topic where strong emotions associated with infrequently shared experiences often underlie present beliefs and values. An exhibition of historical artefacts designed to generate discussion around the topic of infant feeding was piloted at the Welsh National Eisteddfod 2015 as part of a qualitative development study. The study indicated that the exhibition was perceived as a safe space for discussion regardless of prior beliefs and experience, and that artefacts acted as effective prompts for reminiscence and reflection. Follow-up interviews identified areas of intergenerational change that impact on intergenerational support – changing hospital practices, expert advice and attitudes towards breastfeeding in public places. The exhibition indicated the potential of historical artefacts to facilitate intra- and intergenerational conversation around sensitive public health topics.

HYDRAULIC SIMULATION OF FLASH FLOOD AS TRIGGERED BY NATURAL DAM BREAK

Yanuar Tri Kurniawan

On January 1st, 2006 flash flood disaster (in Indonesia is known as banjir bandang) occurred in Kaliputih River, Jember District of East Java Province. This disaster resulted in more than 80 people were killed and hundreds were injured. The disaster was caused by natural dam break. The natural dam was formed by landslide due to heavy rainfall. After the January 2006 disaster, new cracks and crevices were found in the upstream area of Kaliputih River. Based on this condition, it cannot be disregarded to avoid repetition of similar disaster in the future. Therefore, it is required to conduct mitigation efforts in order to anticipate similar disaster in the future. One of the mitigation efforts is modeling simulation of the past event. The understanding which is obtained from the simulation can be used as reference to arrange other mitigation efforts plan and action . Modeling simulation of the January 2006 flood was conducted by involving 1-D model of HEC-RAS version 4.1.0 software. Flood hydrograph was obtained by analyzing related hydrologic aspects using Nakayasu method. The natural dam model was interpreted from field observation and related references. Some assumptions related to study constraints were taken. Model calibration was conducted by repeating simulation using fixed discharge and parameter values in a certain range. The observations were carried out to the maximum water surface elevation and it was traced to the downstream river. Calibration model result showed that the height of natural dam significantly influence changes of water surface elevation at control point. Tracing of flood result in reconstruction of January 2006 flood showed the conformity with the real event. It was observed from the arrival time of flood at certain location. From obtained results, it can be concluded that simulation modeling gave the acceptable results.
