Modeling the Elastic Behavior of Clay Soils Reinforced with Recycled Rubber Fibers

Melik Bekhiti, Abdelhalim Bbensaada, Ali Smaida

This work use composite material models to forecast the modulus of elasticity of a composite made from scrap tire rubber fibers and clayey soils. The computed modulus of elasticity is juxtaposed with the reference modulus derived from experimental testing. Forecasting the effective mechanical characteristics of composites is essential in scenarios when testing is unfeasible, difficult, or expensive. The investigation encompasses many methodologies within the elasticity framework, including rheological models like Voigt, Reuss, Hirsch-Dougill, Popovics, Halpin-Tsai, Hashin, and the Bache & Napper–Christensen estimate. These models seek to forecast the effective Young's modulus of the composite system consisting of soil and rubber fibers. The highest disparities recorded are 10.66%, 12.71%, and 12.98% for both types of soil. Voigt, Hashin, and Bache calculations provide precise forecasts of the effective Young's modulus, demonstrating remarkable concordance with experimental data across various fiber volume fractions from 10% to 50%.

A Study on Teaching Factors Affecting Learning Outcomes in General Education: University A’s Case-based

Hannah Jo, Eunye Kim

The purpose of this study is to provide implications for general education by analyzing the factors influencing learning outcomes in general education courses. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 2,042 enrolled students at A National University located in Chungnam. For this study, correlation analysis and descriptive statistics, analysis of differences in learning performance according to students’ background characteristics, and multiple regression analysis of factors affecting learning performance in general education courses were conducted. The findings are as follows: Firstly, from the results of analyzing the difference in learning outcomes based on students’ background characteristics, we can see that the first-year students were statistically significantly lower in satisfaction than their second and third-year counterparts. Additionally, students from the College of Arts showed statistically significant differences in satisfaction compared to those from the College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Science, and College of Engineering. Secondly, the analysis of factors influencing learning outcomes showed that in the “Course Syllabus Area”, the clarity of learning objectives, in the “Course Content Area” the organization of course content for achieving learning objectives, and in the “Course Operation Area,” factors such as instructors’ adequate preparation, active communication with instructors during lectures, adherence to the weekly course schedule outlines in the syllabus, and appropriate supplementary sessions significantly predicted learning outcomes in general education courses. Additionally, in the “Student Evaluation Area,” the use of appropriate assessment for teaching methods, as well as providing suitable feedback on assignments and evaluation results, were significant predictors of learning outcomes. Furthermore, we found that the clarity of learning objectives in the “Course Syllabus Area” only moderately predicted the understanding of course content. Additionally, factors in the “Course Operation Area” such as active communication with instructors during lectures, adherence to the weekly course schedule, and appropriate supplementary sessions only moderate predicted knowledge and skill improvement. However, we also found the appropriateness of notifying the students of any changes in course content in the “Course Operation Area” not to be statistically significant in predicting knowledge and skill improvement. Based on the above research findings, it is recommended that instructors emphasize the importance of their role in influencing learning outcomes in general education courses. Additionally, it is crucial that instructors carefully structure course content during the planning phase to align with the achievement of learning objectives. Adequate preparation by instructors, active engagement with students during lectures, and the implementation of strategies to enhance interaction should be prioritized. Furthermore, the effective utilization of appropriate assessment methods for teaching and providing constructive feedback on assignments and evaluations is essential. This study also suggested deriving recommendations for assignment criteria, evaluation methods, and feedback mechanisms.

Using Students’ Interests in General Music (Part 3): Suggestions for Practice

Virginia Wayman Davis, Mara E. Culp

Music education in the United States aims to be for every child, yet many students become less interested in school music as they mature. Although previous research reveals activities that upper-elementary students may prefer, much of this research may not represent 21st-century students, the instruments and activities that have enhanced curricula in recent decades, or more diverse musical offerings from around the globe. To guide decision-making regarding the activities most appropriate for their students, teachers can gather information from students through both formal and informal means (e.g., conducting research). In this third article in our research-to-practice series, we use data from our investigation into upper-elementary students’ activity preferences to create three hypothetical “classes” and provide suggestions for structuring activities that are responsive to our learners. Using a similar process, teachers may discover and tailor experiences to their own students’ interests, increasing motivation and persistence in music.

Potential and limitations of digital ethnographic research: A case study on a web community

Giuseppe Masullo, Marianna Coppola

IntroductionThis work aims at transposing ethnographic research into digital contexts to probe its potential and limitations in a specific field of study: that of sexuality, particularly suited to ethnographic exploration. We chose as our case study a web community of Italian asexual people. As we shall see, this allowed us to simultaneously explore both the various techniques called into play in digital ethnography and the digital as a specific sphere within which sexuality takes on a very peculiar meaning. Digital sociality is paramount for the definition of imaginaries, meanings, and practices that could not be explored elsewhere. This is due to the implicit characteristics of the population studied, which does not find corresponding physical spaces of aggregation.MethodsThe paper will present the research design using this specific case study to address some of the typical dilemmas that researchers face when following the digital ethnographic approach and will explore the research results as an example of the kind of analysis available with the information and data collected through this method. Results and discussionThe conclusions will attempt to briefly outline the shortfalls and advantages of this method, considering its application to this specific field of study.

A Study of General Philosophy Education in the Metaverse -Focusing on the ‘VRChat College’ Case

Juhan Yoon, Damin Yee

This study aims to find the direction in which general philosophy education could proceed amid the big wave of virtualization by analyzing a lecture course in general philosophy conducted in the Metaverse. Considering the characteristics of philosophy education that emphasizes discussion and communication, it would be necessary to consider how general philosophy education could be conducted. With these problems in mind, this study will consist of the following three steps. First, we will discuss the nature and significance of general philosophy education. Second, we will illuminate the limitations of online general philosophy education by comparing cases of a face-to-face lecture with a non-face-to-face one. Finally, based on those previous considerations, we will show that education in the Metaverse might serve as a promising alternative to non-face-to-face general philosophy education. This study analyzes the case of an aesthetics lecture conducted in ‘VRChat’, which is a popular Metaverse platform, and argues that education in the Metaverse has an advantage in that it could supplement and even strengthen interactions, especially between learners.

First report of Cladobotryum verticillatum (Ascomycota, Hypocreaceae) causing cobweb disease on Paxillus involutus

Xiaoya An, Guohui Cheng, Hanxing Gao et al.

Paxillus, a type of ectomycorrhizal fungi distributed widely in the world, is also an essential category for researching bioactive substances and pharmacological functions. We discovered fruitbodies of Paxillus involutus covered in a layer of white mycelium in 2020. Cladobotryum verticillatum, a pathogenic fungus related to cobweb disease, was isolated and identified based on morphological and phylogenetic features. Koch's postulates were used to confirm the pathogenicity. The host range test revealed that C. verticillatum could cause disease in all examined mushrooms except Ganoderma sichuanense. To our knowledge, C. verticillatum is a new record species in China and a new pathogen on Paxillus involutus.

What Does Critical Race Theory Have to do With Music Education?

Chiao-Wei Liu

As more states pass bills banning critical race theory in schools, it is especially important for teachers to understand what critical race theory is and the implications of such bills. To understand what critical race theory is and intends to do. I look at its origins and how it has been employed in the field of education. Recognizing the legacy of European colonialism in music education, I propose that teachers critically examine our own subjectivities and engage with students’ counterstories to disrupt the dominant narrative.

Sexual Difference as a Question of Ethics: Alterities of the Flesh in Irigaray and Merleau-Ponty

Judith Butler

This article crosses the approach of the feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray, making reference mainly to her work An Ethics of Sexual Difference and the philosopher Merleau-Ponty, highlighting, especially, the chapter "The Intertwining- the Chiasm," of the book The Visible and the Invisible.  The first author quoted has a kind of relation of ambivalence and self-subordination in the way she puts herself in front of the texts of male philosophers, attributing power to them. Incorporating for her own text the philosophical tradition. Irigaray gets involved with Merleau-Ponty by an "interweaving", which will characterize the relations of flesh. It is worth noting that this article is unified by the purpose of the elaboration of what Irigaray calls an ethical relationship between the sexes. For her this relationship consists of the question "Who are you?” The vast debate involving ethics, sexual difference, and otherness of the flesh is being woven under the analysis of the two great philosophers mentioned.

Prevalence and characterization of urinary tract infection in socially vulnerable pregnant women from Bucaramanga, Colombia

Myriam Ruiz-Rodríguez, Yuri Sánchez-Martínez, Fabio Camilo Suárez-Cadena et al.

Introduction: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common medical complication during pregnancy and is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of UTI in socially vulnerable pregnant women in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and to characterize these cases. Also, to identify the factors associated with the development of this complication and the antibiotic resistance profile of the microorganisms causing the infection. Materials and methods: Secondary analysis of the data obtained in a main study conducted on 838 pregnant women treated by the public healthcare network of Bucaramanga. The prevalence of UTI was estimated considering the number of pregnant women with a urine culture report (n=648). A descriptive analysis of the sample characteristics and a bivariate analysis were performed to evaluate the differences in the diagnosis of UTI. Finally, factors associated with UTI were estimated using a binomial logistic regression model. Results: The prevalence of UTI during pregnancy was 14.51% (n=94). For each year that maternal age increased, a 6% reduction in the prevalence of UTI (PR: 0.94 95% CI: 0.90-0.98, p<0.001) was observed. Moreover, an association was found between having a history of UTI and developing this complication during pregnancy (PR: 3.6 95% CI: 1.81-7.08, p= 0.005). The most common pathogens isolated were E. Coli (75.53%) and Klebsiella spp (17.02%). Conclusion: About 15% of the participants had UTI, so it is necessary to implement health education strategies aimed at socially vulnerable pregnant women, mainly the youngest and those with a history of UTI, to reduce its occurrence and possible consequences for maternal-fetal health. Furthermore, the data reported herein may help develop public policies to improve prevention and care of UTI in this population.

Varicoceles

Adam Albert

A varicocele is an abnormal venous dilatation and/or tortuosity of the pampiniform plexus in the scrotum. The exact pathophysiology of varicoceles is not very well understood, including whether there is any effect on male infertility. They can, however, be uncomfortable or painful and may result in testicular growth arrest during and prior to puberty. Varicocoeles can cause significant anxiety in patients about infertility, testicular cancer, or appearance. This article will not only discuss how to diagnose, when to investigate, and how to treat varicoceles, but also when to leave them alone.

Cataracts

Annabelle Machin

In 2010, the Global Burden of Diseases Study found that worldwide, 10 800 000 people are blind and 35 000 000 visually impaired due to cataracts. In the UK, more than half of people aged over 65 years are affected, with cataract surgery being one of the commonest elective procedures. It is important for GPs to be able to diagnose this common condition, to offer advice to patients about driving restrictions, and refer for surgery when indicated. Prompt identification and referral of infants with suspected cataracts is essential.
