Abstrak

In 2010, the Global Burden of Diseases Study found that worldwide, 10 800 000 people are blind and 35 000 000 visually impaired due to cataracts. In the UK, more than half of people aged over 65 years are affected, with cataract surgery being one of the commonest elective procedures. It is important for GPs to be able to diagnose this common condition, to offer advice to patients about driving restrictions, and refer for surgery when indicated. Prompt identification and referral of infants with suspected cataracts is essential.
