Modelling broad emission lines in active galactic nuclei

Bozena Czerny

Abstract Broad Emission Lines are the most characteristic features of Active Galaxies, but the mechanism of creating a medium able to emit these intense lines is not quite clear. Observations clearly indicate that the motion of the material is predominantly Keplerian, with traces of inflow and clear signatures of outflow, but this still does not point out whether the lines partially come from the disk surface, or exclusively from the circumnuclear material, and whether this material originates from the disk as a wind, or comes, at least partially, from outside. I review the basic scenarios for the formation of the Broad Line Region (BLR), and the recent progress in modelling the physical conditions in he emitting medium. The current state is the outer radius of the BLR is fixed by the dust sublimation temperature in the medium exposed to the irradiation from the central source, the inner radius is likely fixed by the dust sublimation temperature in the atmosphere of the non-illuminated accretion disk, and the local cloud density is a universal number fixed by the radiation pressure confinement. The time-dependent aspects of the BLR formation, however, still wait for serious modelling effort matching the quality of the observational data.

Target for LOFAR Long Term Archive: Architecture and Implementation

A. Belikov, D. Boxhoorn, Fokke Dijkstra et al.

The LOFAR Long-Term Archive (LTA) is a multi-Petabyte scale data storage for the processed data of LOFAR telescope. We describe the adaptation of the WISE concept implemented by Target consortium for the LOFAR LTA and changes we introduced to it to accommodate LOFAR data. This paper describes an example of a new information system created on the basis of Astro-WISE for a wider range and scale of data.

Information systems playground—the target infrastructure

A. Belikov, Fokke Dijkstra, Hans Gankema et al.

The Target infrastructure has been specially built as a storage and compute infrastructure for the information systems derived from Astro-WISE. This infrastructure will be used by several applications that collaborate in the area of information systems within the Target project. It currently consists of 10 PB of storage and thousands of computational cores. The infrastructure has been constructed based on the requirements of the applications. The storage is controlled by the Global Parallel File System of IBM. This file system takes care of the required flexibility by combining storage hardware with different characteristics into a single file system. It is also very scalable, which allows the system to be extended into the future, while replacing old hardware with new technology.

Galaxy colours in the AKARI deep SEP survey

C. Pearson, C. Pearson, W. Jeong et al.

Abstract We investigate the segregation of the extragalactic population via colour criteria to produce an efficient and inexpensive methodology to select specific source populations as a function of far-infrared flux. Combining galaxy evolution scenarios and a detailed spectral library of galaxies, we produce simulated catalogues incorporating segregation of the extragalactic population into component types (normal, star-forming, AGN) via colour cuts. As a practical application we apply our criteria to the deepest survey to be undertaken in the far-infrared with the AKARI (formerly ASTRO-F) satellite. Using the far-infrared wavebands of the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS, one of the focal-plane instruments on AKARI) we successfully segregate the normal, starburst and ULIRG populations. We also show that with additional MIR imaging from AKARI’s Infrared Camera (IRC), significant contamination and/or degeneracy can be further decreased and show a particular example of the separation of cool normal galaxies and cold ULIRG sources. We conclude that our criteria provide an efficient means of selecting source populations (including rare luminous objects) and produce colour-segregated source counts without the requirement of time intensive ground-based follow up to differentiate between the general galaxy population.
