Strategies for survival in fast-changing industries

Clayton M. Christensen, Fernando F. Suarez, James M. Utterback

Technology strategy variables tend to predominate as predictors of survival in the fast-changing rigid disk drive industry. Building on these previous studies, we here test the hypothesis that the technological and market strategies of a new entrant are highly interrelated and that their joint effect plays an important role in a firm¹s probability of survival. In particular,we propose that firms that target new market segments with an architectural innovation willtend to be more successful than those that target existing markets or innovate in component technology, even after controlling for all the competing predictors of survival. This paper advances the existing literature on innovation by tracing the main technical elements of a dominant design in the rigid disk drive industry over time, and provides a much more rigorous definition of the concept of a dominant design than we have had in the past. We find the notion of first-mover advantage is not applicable in the rigid disk drive industry. Instead, we propose the idea of an entry-window tightly linked to the emergence of the dominant product design as defined.

The pathway to winning: optimizing small and medium enterprises performance in the construction industry through tailored success factors

Yenus Muhammed Argaw, Yingqi Liu

Small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in most developing countries. However, many of these enterprises face a range of challenges that hinder their growth and survival. This research aimed to examine the critical success factors affecting the growth of different sizes of SMEs in the Ethiopian construction industry. The novelty of the paper lies in addressing the identification problem found in the existing literature by employing appropriate estimation techniques to quantify the contribution of multiple success factors, thereby moving beyond descriptive statistics. Using an ordered logit model, we obtained interesting and informative results about the effects of critical success factors on the growth of SMEs. The results invariably suggest that the contribution of the critical success factors depends on the firm's specific factors (annual turnover). We found that not all factors exert comparable effects on success; certain factors wield a substantial influence for larger SMEs, whereas others demonstrate a significant impact on smaller SMEs. The gender of the owner has a positive and significant impact on the sustainable growth and success of Ethiopian construction firms with an annual turnover below 500,000 Birr. In contrast, for firms with an annual turnover above 500,000 Birr, the entrepreneur’s education level and entrepreneurial orientation are strongly and positively associated with firm success, showing a greater influence compared to lower-turnover firms. Therefore, this paper strongly recommends SME owners, managers, and staffs consider the level of annual turnover as the effectiveness of success factors depends on the level of annual turnover.

Effect of watermelon seed flour quantity on the density and expansion ratio of extrudates

Toshkov Nesho, Kodinova Siyka, Simitchiev Apostol et al.

Watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) seeds which are considered as waste have a high nutritional value due to the high content of proteins, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids and for that reason they are suitable for production of functional extruded products. Therefore the focus of this experiment is to investigate the effect of watermelon seed flour content, temperature of the matrix and moisture content on the density and expansion ratio of extrudates from corn grits. A single screw extruder Brabender 20 DN was used for the extrusion cooking. A full factorial experiment 23 with independent parameters watermelon seed flour content (3 % and 10 %), temperature of the matrix (160 °C and 180 °C) and moisture content (14 % and 18 %) was applied. The expansion ratio varies between 1.76 and 2.56 while the density change from 0.103 g/cm3 to 0.159 g/cm3 respectively. The statistical analysis showed that the expansion ratio decrease with the increase of the moisture content and watermelon seed flour content while the density increase.

Investigation of Shadow Effects in Reflective Ultrasonic Anemometers Based on Particle Image Velocimetry and Computational Fluid Dynamics

H. B. Li, M. H. Lin, Y. Liu et al.

To address the measurement instability of reflective ultrasonic anemometers in complex wind fields, this study systematically investigates the mechanisms by which shadow effects caused by transducers and reflector support pillars affect measurement accuracy under varying wind speeds and directions. By integrating particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, 1:1 and 1:2 scale models are employed to reveal the flow field characteristics and error mechanisms. The results indicate that at a wind direction of 0°, wall-following vortices and turbulent wakes generated by transducer structures cause systematic wind speed deviations along the measurement paths. At a 45° wind direction, flow disturbances around the support pillars become the dominant source of shadow effects. The 1:1 scale model exhibits insufficient decay of large-scale, low-frequency turbulent energy, resulting in the accumulation of turbulent kinetic energy and significant wind speed errors at 0°. In contrast, the 1:2 scale model enables efficient energy transfer through high-frequency, small-scale vortices, enhances vortex intensity uniformity, and achieves improved spatial homogeneity in cross-wind measurement errors. These findings provide an important theoretical foundation for improving the high-precision measurement performance of reflective ultrasonic anemometers in complex wind environments.

Ardaneswari Dyah Pitaloka Citraresmi, Sri Gunani Partiwi, Ratna Sari Dewi

The creative industry has experienced rapid expansion in emerging economies, substantially contributing to employment and economic growth. However, despite this expansion, understanding how multiple workforce-related factors jointly influence creative performance remains limited. This study’s main contribution is to offer an integrated perspective on how workforce resilience, sustainability, and digital readiness collectively shape the creative output of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). We used a mixed-methods design to collect data through surveys and in-depth interviews with owners and employees to capture insights on adaptability, well-being, and digital competencies. Results derived from Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) reveal that resilient and sustainable workforces positively affect creative performance, with digital readiness as a crucial mediator. This study highlights the importance of digital adoption strategies and workforce preparedness in an evolving industry landscape. Importance-Performance Map Analysis further identifies psychosocial risk management, employee well-being, and workplace safety as high-priority yet underdeveloped areas requiring immediate attention. By clearly articulating how an integrated approach to resilience, sustainability, and digital readiness advances theoretical and practical discourse, this work provides actionable insights for policymakers and MSMEs practitioners seeking to enhance innovation and maintain competitiveness in the face of ongoing digital disruption.

Current Progress Regarding Cordyceps militaris, Its Metabolite Function, and Its Production

Yu-Chieh Chou, Ting-Hsuan Sung, Shi-Jing Hou et al.

Cordyceps militaris is a valuable medicinal fungus which has been widely used as a traditional medicine in East Asia. Compared to the well-known medicinal fungus C. sinensis, C. militaris can produce similar fermented metabolites with various biological activities, but it requires a shorter culture time and simpler culture conditions, and therefore, it has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The purpose of this review was to organize the current studies regarding metabolite production from C. militaris relative to their biological functions. We combined findings of metabolite production to correlate with different fermentation modes to obtain a full view of production processes used to yield the product. While research on C. militaris fermentation is not uncommon to date, its high value still highlights the importance of developing more modern fermentation processes for industrial production.

A Review of the Insider Threat, a Practitioner Perspective Within the U.K. Financial Services

Findlay Whitelaw, Jackie Riley, Nebrase Elmrabit

The insider threat within organisational cybersecurity continues to be of great concern globally. The current insider threat detection strategies are acknowledged as ineffective, evidenced by the increased reported events in high-profile insider threats and cyber data loss cases borne from insider and privilege misuse. The impact of insider incidents on Financial Service (FS) organisations is vast, operationally disruptive, and costly from a regulatory, financial, and reputational perspective. Many United Kingdom (UK) FS organisations have invested in insider risk programmes, but there is no sign of the insider threat diminishing. This paper will address the following research questions: 1) What factors influence employees to become malicious insider threats and apply this to employees working within the UK? 2) What preventative measures could be effectively operationalised within UK FS organisations to prevent malicious insider attacks? A literature review was conducted, reviewing 54 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Additional and relevant articles were incorporated to enrich the review, further substantiating the academic currency and context of the study. The review reveals five primary emerging insider threat themes, subsequently discussed and including behavioural indicators, information security behaviours, technical controls, insider threat strategies, and regulation. Throughout the literature review, one primary challenge highlighted the lack of articles published concerning the FS industry; however, the studies reviewed were relevant, appropriate, and applied across this review. Furthermore, the review also considers outcomes from a practitioner’s perspective, offering insights into the limitations of insider threat approaches and strategies and offering potential recommendations.

XUE Gang,GUO Tao,ZHANG Ye,XU Xiangyang,WANG Wei,HAN Kening,GUO Dongxin,JIN Xiaobo

The exploration and development of coalbed methane(CBM)in the Permian Longtan Formation in south Chongqing is in the initial stage. In order to reveal the general geological conditions of coalbed methane in the coal seam C25, by the experimental and geological data obtained from the coal mines and coalbed methane drilling, the geological characteristics such as coal rock and coal quality, coal pore penetration and gas content have been analyzed. The results show that the C25 coalbed methane of Longtan Formation of Permian in the study area is characterized by “stable development, relatively large thickness, low pore permeability, high metamorphism and high gas content”. The development of the coal seam C25 is stable throughout the whole area, showing the trend of “thick in the north and thin in the south”, and the thickness in the northern part of the coalbed is generally larger than 1.5 m. The coal quality belongs to semi-bright coal. The content of vitrinite in the organic component is 51.7%~72.2%; the vitrinite reflectance ranges from 1.8%~2.2%, and the metamorphism degree is high-over maturity. The porosity and permeability of the coal rock are relatively low, with the porosity ranging from 3.46%~8.46% and the permeability of mostly lower than 0.01×10-3 μm2. The gas content of the coal bed is high, generally more than 10.0 m3/t; meanwhile, the top and bottom plates of the coal bed are good sealing layers. Based on the production of Q1 and Y2, it is believed that the coal seam C25 of Permian Longtan Formation in south Chongqing area has good geological conditions for CBM exploration and development.

Le paysage industriel sous le prisme de l'art contemporain. Le cas de la fondation Pirelli HangarBicocca

Valeria Giudici

This article examines how the territorial dimension is integrated into the activities of a corporate foundation for contemporary art. It focuses on the Pirelli HangarBicocca foundation, located in the post-industrial Bicocca district of Milan, exploring the theme of valorizing an industrial building that has been preserved from trivialization. After describing the cultural elements of the Bicocca landscape linked to the historical presence of the Pirelli company and examining the perception of the foundation's building by local actors, the article presents some examples of artistic interventions in the space of the cultural institution. These practices show how the interpretation of industrial spaces through the medium of art helps to strengthen the integration of the territorial dimension into the company's identity, while at the same time enhancing and bringing up to date the industrial landscape of the Milanese district. The analysis suggests that the foundation is more open and accessible thanks to its reflection on the territorial context, counteracting the elitist character generally associated with contemporary art and private institutions.

Modeling of Creep in Refractory Lining in Anode Baking Furnaces

Trond Brandvik, Louis Gosselin, Zhaohui Wang et al.

Refractory flue walls in anode baking furnaces are exposed to harsh conditions during operation, affecting the structural properties of the material. The flue walls in industrial furnaces degrade over time to the point where they no longer perform as intended and must be replaced. Earlier studies of spent refractory lining from anode baking furnaces have shown considerable densification of the flue wall bricks, where the densification varies significantly from the anode side to the flue side of the brick. The observed densification is proposed to be caused by high-temperature creep, and the aim of this work was to determine whether the uneven densification across the brick could be modeled using a finite element method (FEM) implementing high-temperature steady-state creep. Finite element modeling was used to model steady-state creep for a material similar to that used in the baking furnace. Thermal and physical parameters and boundary conditions were chosen to simulate the conditions in an anode baking furnace. Refractory samples of pristine and spent lining from the baking furnace were also analyzed with X-ray computed tomography (CT), with a reduction in the porosity confirming the densification during operation. The FEM modeling demonstrated that high-temperature creep could explain the observed densification in the spent flue walls. The present findings may be useful in relation to increasing the lifetime of industrial flue walls.
