The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies brings numerous opportunities andchallenges to business innovation. Understanding how firms can leverage AI technologies to create business value, propose responsible solutions to social problems, and achieve sustainable development has become important. Based on the knowledge-based view (KBV), a theoretical model is proposed to examine the impact of AI capability on responsible innovation. The study focuses on the mediating role of boundary-spanning search and the moderating roles of knowledge field activity and tech-for-good culture. Hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping are applied to data from 520 Chinese high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The results indicate that AI capability positively influences responsible innovation. This relationship is fully mediated by boundary-spanning search. Knowledge field activity and tech-for-good culture moderate the relationships between AI capability and boundary-spanning search and between boundary-spanning search and responsibleinnovation. They also moderate the indirect effect of boundary-spanning search on the relationship between AI capability and responsible innovation. This study contributes to the literature on AI capabilities and innovation outcomes. It also provides practical insights for managers of high-tech SMEs and policymakers to foster responsible innovation.

This article interrogates the destructive socio-ecological nexus in Véronique Tadjo’s In the Company of Men (2021) through a synthesis of Cajetan Iheka’s framework of ‘proximity’ and Rob Nixon’s concept of ‘slow violence’. While existing scholarship primarily addresses pandemic memorialization, this study identifies a critical gap by analysing how Tadjo’s visceral and multi-sensory imagery functions as a diagnostic of the colonial and socio-economic forces driving ecological collapse. The central argument posits that Tadjo utilizes imagery to manifest the catastrophic outcomes of ‘vulnerable proximity’, where the material enmeshment of species under extractive capitalism facilitates a lethal bridge for pathogens. By applying Nixon’s theory, the analysis demonstrates how the ‘slow violence’ of habitat destruction and unregulated mining, often invisible and attritional, is accelerated into the ‘fast violence’ of zoonotic spillover. The findings reveal that when human-non-human proximity is mediated through post-colonial structural weaknesses and global market demands, it results in a terminal breakdown of species boundaries. This research contributes to the African environmental humanities by illustrating how Tadjo’s aesthetic strategies map the negative externalities of the human–non-human nexus, specifically identifying how habitat loss, pollution, pandemic eruptions and deaths of living beings emerge as inevitable consequences of fractured proximity. Ultimately, the study concludes that the pandemic is the visceral manifestation of long-term, attritional environmental degradation inherent in modern extractive regimes.

There has been a considerable shift in opinion in recent years concerning the use of language learners’ first language (L1) in the teaching and learning of the second language (L2). Recent research has revealed that L1 use is less problematic than once believed. That research, however, has yet to consider the multiple contextual factors affecting L1 use, notably in the Algerian context. The current study explored beliefs held by Algerian teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) concerning the use of learners’ L1 with the aim of comparing these beliefs with expected language teaching practices established by the country’s teaching policy. A questionnaire was distributed to 219 EFL teachers across three academic levels and six categories of teaching experience. The results revealed that teachers often felt neutral toward the use of L1 or considered L1 as a vital element in certain L2 teaching/ learning practices. Additionally, these results remained consistent when analyzed by teachers’ academic level, gender, and years of teaching experience, indicating that learning circumstances hold little to no importance in determining the role of L1 in the Algerian L2 classroom. These findings stand in stark contrast to the “strictly-no-L1” policy set by the country’s education system. Based on these findings, it is recommended that perhaps the country’s educational framework should be reconsidered to meet teachers’ and learners’ needs.

The vision of school based on constructivist education, in which the students are active participants and where the child’s knowledge is developed in the course of interaction with the environment, has long been the goal of many educational experts. Unfortunately, it remains just a theoretical construct for most of them, not applicable in a real school. Similarly, many teachers and principals, though they agree with the assumptions of constructivist education, do not see the possibility of implementing it at school and ask directly: What would it look like? What is the essence of it? What should it be based on? These doubts formed the basis for the development of a research project titled “Mutual Learning Education – Constructivism in School Practice,” whose main objective was to transform the instructional teaching paradigm applied by teachers into a constructivist educational model. This article presents the results of part of the research conducted within the framework of the above-mentioned project devoted to changing the instructional educational methods applied by teachers into constructivist methods intended to strengthen students’ skills connected with responsibility and involvement in the development of their knowledge.

Patrick O’Brian inspired this work, with his 1934 book of chronicles “Beasts Royal,” where he gives a voice to animals. Therein, among other animals, we find Skogula, a young sperm whale journeying with his family group across the South Seas and his views on the surrounding world, both underwater and on land. This paper tells a story of historical natural events, from the viewpoint of a fin whale that travelled, rested and stranded in the Tagus estuary mouth (Lisbon, Portugal) during the early 16th century. It allows us to move across time and explore the past of this estuarine ecosystem. What kind of changes took place and how can literature and heritage contribute to understand peoples’ constructions of past environments, local maritime histories and memories? In the second part of this essay we present a fictional short story, supported on historical documental sources and imagery research where Lily, the whale, is the main character. Thus, we see the Tagus estuary as perceived through this whale’s-eye view. Finally, we discuss past earthquakes, whale strandings, the occurrence of seals and dolphins and peoples’ perceptions of the Tagus coastal environment across time. We expect to make a contribution to the field of the marine environmental humanities. We will do so both by addressing, by means of this literary approach, the writing of “new thalassographies,” oceanic historiographies and “historicities” and by including all intervening actors—people, animals and the physical space—in the understanding of the past of more-than-human aquatic worlds.

A comprehensive command of national (Persian) and Western (mainly English/American) literary traditions and a deep knowledge of historical events form the backbone of the cinematographic oeuvre of Hassan Fathi, an Iranian director noted for his “historian-adaptor” approach toward filmmaking. This being the case, in his Shahrzad series (2015–2018), the director details the August 1953 coup d’état in Iran as an intertextual scenario in which a mélange of literary and cinematic “texts” and fictional characters along with historical figures are brought together in a dynamic and interactive process. In an undertaking that gives the series an interesting postmodern character, Fathi, instead of adapting a single literary work, engages in animating this historical event by interweaving One Thousand and One Nights, Othello, and The Godfather together. Taking advantage of adaptation theory as its theoretical framework, this paper attempts to delineate how, in terms of storyline and characterization, the series stages these multiple “texts” simultaneously. Overall, the paper proposes that Shahrzad is a palimpsestuous hive of intertextuality.
Tuning's progress in the discipline of history in the United States since 2009 illustrates the project's continuing capacity to develop “educational structures and programmes on the basis of diversity and autonomy”, maintaining the initiative's original European Union commitment in a markedly different academic environment across the Atlantic. Struggling initially against a backdrop of confusion, hesitancy, and resistance among US faculty, Tuning has been adopted by a steadily expanding number of educators in individual institutions, state systems, and the history discipline's premier professional society. Though operating, at times, in an uneven, imprecise, or pro forma manner, Tuning in the US manages to address several important goals: bringing a more coherent frame of reference to scattered conversations about higher education; framing a more meaningful discussion about the knowledge, skills, and non-monetized “value” developed through higher education; focusing on the central role of faculty discipline experts in the work of assessment, accreditation, and accountability; and engaging professional scholarly societies on questions of teaching and learning.
