Analysis of communicative and pragmatic connotations of the concept "Hospitality" in the Kabardino-Cherkess language

Madina Yu. Ezaova, Farida M. Ashkhot

The purpose of this work is to study the linguistic expression of one of the key aspects of human life – the sphere of hospitality, which is analyzed through the lens of paremiology. Drawing on the various works of scholars who have studied the term "hospitality," we can examine its general prototypical meaning in more detail, which summarizes the empirical understanding of this socially significant action. The work highlights the emotional and evaluative characteristics and figurative representations that are inherent in Kabardian-Circassian culture. The analysis of the communicative-pragmatic connotations of the concept under study can provide more specific data on the process of cognition of reality by speakers of different cultures, highlighting both universal and nationally specific features. The result of the study is the examination of the elements of the paremiological worldview, focusing on the phenomenon of khyeshchaghe / hospitality in the Kabardian-Cherkessian language in the context of modern linguistics. This study relies on the use of various approaches, which allows us to examine the phenomenon of hospitality from different perspectives. The combination of different methodological tools provides opportunities for a deeper understanding of the phenomenon under study. In this article, we analyze the "cultural" layer of language, which includes the Adyghe proverbial palette related to specific knowledge, by considering language as an aspect of culture. In this context, "hospitality" occupies a key position in the linguistic consciousness of the Adyghe linguistic community, being one of the main elements with national specificity.

Patron of the Past

Bram Fookes

This essay provided a rare opportunity for an undergraduate history student—doing hands-on research with a copy of a seventeenth-century book held in the Brock University's Special Collections. The essay provides a "way in" to understanding early English book culture. It explores that culture through an investigation of Philemon Holland’s 1635 translation of Pliny’s Natural History.

Mezhevikin’s case. Conflict in the academic environment during the Great Patriotic War

Sergey D. Chebotarev, Mikhail M. Leonov

Backround. Against the background of the conflict between the director of the Kuibyshev Aviation Institute F.I. Stebikhov and Associate Professor S.S. Mezhevikin, the article examines the role of informal connections in the Soviet academic circles during the Second world war. The purpose of the article is to study the activities of the “most active members of the institute” – the dominant group that controlled the process of distribution of scarce goods and took part in solving the most significant issues facing the team. Materials and methods. The basis of the study was unpublished archival documents located in the funds of the Samara Regional State Archive of Socio-Political History and the Samara National Research University. The methodological basis of the study is the principles of historicism, objectivity and consistency. Results. The phases of the conflict are consistently studied, starting from the sending of the teachers to public works and ending with the dismissal. Strategies of behavior of the participants were identified, including complaints to officials and letters to the editorial offices of newspapers. Conclusions. In addition to the formal hierarchy, the institute had a system of informal relations. The most active members of the institute, which had weight and authority in the eyes of the staff, formed a common position on a number of significant issues and largely determined the attitude towards each member of the team. The authors come to the conclusion that it was the most active members of the institute that played a decisive role in the development and resolution of the conflict.

Francouzsko-belgické komiksy/bandes dessinées ve 20. století a jak zobrazují ideál šťastného domova

Vanja Eichberger

Comics feature many topics – Homes or their absence are among those. No famous comic focuses on home only, many bring stories or subplots revealing the artists' view. In this contribution, those views are being analysed and compared, focussing on master narratives within and interpretations of the works. A selection of comics from Belgium and France has been made limiting the research field to two of the most active/innovative markets for comics. Three of the most important comic series are being analysed, covering a time between 1929 and the 1990es: Chlorophylle, Tintin and Sibylline.

Amateur Stained Glass in English Churches, 1830-80

Thomas Kupper

Nineteenth-century English stained glass has produced a rich corpus of works mainly produced by the many large and well-known Victorian studios. One group of artisans who can add much to the current debate on nineteenth-century stained glass are amateurs. However, almost every scholarly publication discussing stained glass or nineteenth-century material culture has ignored this minority group. Driven by the rejection of mass-produced windows that predates the well-known innovations of the Arts and Crafts Movement, this article is part of ongoing research and it discusses the cultural and social significance of nineteenth-century amateur windows in Anglican churches. Influenced by the Gothic Revival and the ideologies of the Oxford Movement and the Ecclesiologists, the range of amateur individuals is extremely diverse and most had a close connection with the Anglican Church. Inspired by religious literature, women amateurs, in particular, played an important sociocultural role striving for the demands of paid employment, training, education, and access to the professions. A small selection of case studies will explore some of the discovered amateur windows. The article will raise arguments in the context of Victorian religious material and visual cultures and will discuss the art of personalized making.

Praying for Peace

Ian Gibson

In Nepal’s public discourse, Christianity is often described as a divisive force, perhaps a plot by foreign powers to undermine the cohesion of Nepali society. In this article, I present ethnographic material from Bhaktapur suggesting that, at least with respect to family life, the social effects of conversion may often differ from this stereotypical picture. In Bhaktapur, I argue, conversion is more frequently a consequence of pre-existing conflicts within families than a source of new ones. Furthermore, in some contexts, the social, ethical, and ritual practices of Bhaktapurian churches can bring reconciliation to troubled families. In other contexts, conversion can heighten intrafamilial tensions, in particular through the commitment it brings to exclusivist theology. I explore how converts negotiate the conversion process and the tensions that precipitate and result from it, describing how familial power dynamics influence such negotiations. To give the reader a fleshed-out sense of the lived experience of Christian and part-Christian families in Bhaktapur, I give thick descriptions of the conversions of one church minister and his family, and of a church house fellowship in which post-conversion family tensions are discussed. Connecting this ethnography with wider research on Bhaktapurian Christianity, I delineate the competing forces at work in converts’ family lives. In light of the rapid growth of Christianity in Nepal, and the heated and sometimes violent nature of political responses to this, ethnographic research is urgently needed to examine not just the causes but also the longterm effects of Christian conversion; this will help to clarify whether patterns found in Bhaktapur are replicated elsewhere in the country.

Longitudinal Evaluation of Chronic Rhinosinusitis Symptoms in a Population-Based Sample.

Agnes S. Sundaresan, Annemarie G. Hirsch, A. Young et al.

BACKGROUND Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a prevalent and disabling condition of the nose and sinuses. The natural history of CRS symptoms in a general population sample has not been previously studied. OBJECTIVE In a general population-based sample from Pennsylvania, we used 2 questionnaires mailed 6 months apart to estimate the prevalence of, and identify predictors for, stability or change in symptoms over time. METHODS We mailed the baseline and 6-month follow-up questionnaires to 23,700 primary care patients and 7,801 baseline responders, respectively. We categorized nasal and sinus symptoms using European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis (EPOS) epidemiologic criteria. We defined 6 symptom groups over time on the basis of the presence of CRS symptoms at baseline and follow-up. We performed multivariable survey logistic regression controlling for confounding variables comparing persistent versus nonpersistent, recurrent versus stable past, and incident versus never. RESULTS There were 4,966 responders at follow-up: 558 had persistent symptoms, 190 recurrent symptoms, and 83 new symptoms meeting EPOS criteria for CRS. The prevalence of persistent symptoms was 4.8% (95% CI, 3.8-5.8), whereas the annual cumulative incidence of new symptoms was 1.9% and of recurrent symptoms was 3.2%. More severe symptoms at baseline were associated with persistence, whereas minor symptoms, allergies, and multiple treatments were associated with the development of new symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Less than half with nasal and sinus symptoms meeting CRS EPOS criteria in our general, regional population had symptom persistence over time, with symptom profiles at baseline and age of onset being strongly associated with stability of symptoms.
