Peningkatan Keterampilan Proses Sains Mahasiswa melalui Percobaan Identifikasi Keberadaan Senyawa dalam Praktikum Kimia Analitik

Friska Juliana Purba, Chatrina Yohana Sihombing, Marchella Inabuy

The purpose of this study is to improve students' science process skills (SPS) by applying the experimental approach in a guided practical method in the Analytical Chemistry Practical course. The study uses the Classroom Action Research (PTK) method, which is carried out in two cycles, each of which includes the planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The study involved 23 students. Data collection techniques include tests and non-tests, such as pre- and post-tests, laboratory reports, and observation sheets based on science process skills. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kuantitatif. The results of the study showed an increase in students' science process skills from cycle I to cycle II. The observation skill increased from an average score of 2.8 (70%) to 3.3 (82.5%) with a very good category. The measurement skill increased from an average score of 2.9 (72.5%) to 3.1 (77.5%) in the good category. The experimental skill was in the excellent category since the first cycle (82.5%) and remained stable in the second cycle. The communication skill increased from an average score of 2.8 (70%) to 3.1 (75.5%) in the good category. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the implementation of the laboratory method with a guided experimental approach supported by a laboratory manual is effective in improving students' science process skills, particularly in the areas of observation, measurement, and scientific communication in analytical chemistry education.

Power Literacy in Abuse Prevention Education: Lessons from the Field in the Catholic Safeguarding Response

Cathy Melesky Dante, Mark A. Levand, Karen Ross

The phenomenon of sexual abuse by Catholic leaders has led to many responses by clergy, dioceses, and the global Catholic Church. One underexplored aspect of preventing sexual abuse by Catholic leaders is the educational practice of abuse prevention and the moral implications therein. Here we examine best practices for abuse prevention by turning to the interdisciplinary study of intimate partner violence and prevention education as tools for deeper theological exploration of safeguarding initiatives. Using these interdisciplinary insights, we offer theological grounding for power and relationship education in abuse prevention, identifying children’s moral agency, right relationship, a theology of power literacy, and structures of vice as key components in the phenomenon of pervasive abuse. We explain the analysis of safeguarding materials conducted as part of Fordham University’s _Taking Responsibility_ grant initiative, and our concerns regarding the lack of best practices and theological gaps noted in our review—gaps related to social ethics, power, and the structural or communal effects of abuse. We conclude with recommendations for developing future safeguarding training, rooted in a relationship-based, systemic understanding of abuse, used to create our own safeguarding workshop for adolescents.

Durgā Pūcā ve Kālī Pūcā Festivallerinde Dikkat Çeken İki Tantracı Unsur: Tanrıça Kültü ve Hayvan Kurbanı

Beyza Aybike Deveci

Papal Apologies for Residential Schools and the Stories they Tell

Jeremy M. Bergen

This article reflects on the apologies by Pope Francis for Indian Residential Schools in Canada in terms of the stories they tell about past wrongdoing and about the role of the apologies in repair and healing. Public commentators on apologies such as myself are part of this narrative process. These papal apologies frame the integrity of the representative making the apology, the scope of wrongdoing, and thus which kinds of actions the church believes will advance reconciliation. While an analysis of the words spoken reveal significant claims, including the Catholic Church’s problematic denial of institutional responsibility for the schools and the policies they advanced, the meaning of an apology is not determined only by an analysis of the words. I argue that the transformative promise of a praxis which includes an apology is linked to the apologizer’s renunciation of control over the process.

Slavery and Early Christianity - a reflection from a human rights perspective

P. G. Kirchschlaeger

Addressing the topic “slavery and Early Christianity” is a difficult task for various reasons. First, it is complex to reach an understanding of slavery of that time. Secondly, there is the hermeneutic challenge of approaching the issue with a current mind-set that includes the notion of the abolition of slavery. Furthermore, from a contemporary perspective, a critical account of slavery and Early Christianity is possible, with the temporal distance protecting one from the consequences linked to a judgement about slavery. Finally, there is the hermeneutic challenge of engaging with texts from Early Christianity from an ethical perspective in order to reach present-day normative propositions, while respecting the original intention of the texts. In light of these challenges, this article will offer a brief overview of opinions on slavery in Hellenistic philosophy and in the Jewish tradition, and then discuss slavery and Early Christianity, followed by a reflection on slavery and Early Christianity from a human rights perspective.

While learning how to be social individual, child needs a model with which it will identify himself. Members of family, parents in particular, are the most important models who have a direct or indirect influence on the child. Moral considerations concerning income inequality

Jurjen P. de Vries

The income inequality evident today has reached ethically unwarranted levels. In the Old and New Testament the Bible teaches us that disparity in wealth ought to meet the norms of justice and equity. Differences in income must be proportional to differences in the workers’performance and the responsibilities they assume. Employers and trade unions have the duty to ensure that these boundaries are respected. The government’s obligation is to take measures against the abuse of power monopolies, but it does not have to pursue income equality as such. Finally, where greed still rules society, Christians have the task to model a different life.

Forgiveness and non-forgiveness: The defence of self-respect in alternative responses to wrongdoing

Mashuq Ally

The focus of this article is on the notion that, whether in forgiveness or non-forgiveness, negative moral emotions towards a wrongdoer may remain extant and continue to generate memories of wrongdoing. This constitutes a kind of objection to the wrongdoing, even a sort of protest against it insofar as the wrongdoing seems to undermine the victim’s sense of worth. I argue that certain non-retributive attitudes or emotions play under-appreciated roles in policing the boundaries of victims’ self-respect and I attempt to explain what makes such attitudes or emotions – those that reflect the deepest concerns of victims of wrongdoing – centrally important. I defend the need for diverse responses that better fit the nuanced reactions amongst those who seek to come to terms with their hurt, especially those choosing not to forgive. Whatever stance is adopted, protecting one’s self-respect remains the core value that victims of wrongdoing seek to defend.

Potencjał transgresyjnej pedagogiki w procesach implementacji idei mobilności akademickiej

Denys Svyrydenko

Developing a scientific culture through supervision

Danie F.M. Strauss

Through effective educational transmission cultural traditions are passed on to subsequent generations. The presence of alternative theoretical views of reality (paradigms) in various academic disciplines uprooted the positivistic conviction that genuine science ought to be ‘objective’ and ‘neutral’. The background of this view is found in Renaissance and post-Renaissance philosophy, with its initial points of culmination in the thought of the 18th century philosopher, Immanuel Kant. He safe-guarded autonomous human freedom by restricting scholarship to phenomena (subject to the universal law of causality). The dialectic between nature and freedom gave direction to modern philosophy. Non-reductionist orientations eventually emerged recognising what is irreducible. Although a sound academic culture, operative within supervision to doctoral students, must pay attention to argumentative skills and informal logic, it must at the same time acknowledge the limitations of logic. The principle of sufficient reason refers human thinking beyond logic itself. The supervisor therefore should generate, amongst students, an awareness of the difference between reductionist and non-reductionist ontologies. Doctoral students must also realise that persistent themes and scientific revolutions go hand-in-hand. Some examples of seeing the aspects of reality as modes of explanation are given, before the seven aims of scientific endeavors identified by Stafleu are stipulated. This constitutes another important guideline that ought to be taken into account in supervising post-graduate work. Argumentative skills, scientific communication and the status of facts are discussed before a concluding formulation is given in which the overall argument of the article is summarised.

Feminist interpretation in the context of reformational theology: a consideration

C. Nunes, H. J.M. van Deventer

This article explores the contribution that Biblical interpretation from a feminist perspective may make in the context of refor- mational theology. After an overview of the diverse nature of feminist Biblical interpretation that in itself stems from specific developments in hermeneutics, this article explores the contri- butions made by two prominent scholars in this field, namely Schüssler-Fiorenza and Trible. These contributions are then brought to bear on the South African situation and the debate on the role of women in the church. A suggestion is made as to the contribution that the work of Schüssler-Fiorenza and Trible can make in this context.

Schepping en Evolutie*

J. Lever

P. H. Fick

The development of a doctrine of Communion: Calvin and Westphal. Although references to the polemic writings of Calvin against Joachim Westphal of Hamburg are not infrequent, there is a lack of recent specific studies. In this article a resumé is given of Calvin’s doctrine of the Lord’s Supper as found in his “Last Admonition to Joachim Westphal” of 1557 - the last and most detailed of the three works against Westphal and his allies. As this conflict had a definite influence on the development of the 1559 edition of Calvin’s Institutes, it is deemed necessary to take a new look at this document. The consensus with Bullinger which was published in 1551, the so-called Consensus Tigurinus, set the attacks of Westphal going against Calvin. Several of the heads of the Consensus are to be identified in the "Last Admonition'. After a brief historical background, these (nine in all) are used to systematize Calvin’s doctrine on the Lord’s Supper.

Psalm 145: loof Jahwe van A tot Z

W. S. Prinsloo

Despite the absence of any clear strophic division, this acrostic is a remarkable poem. The poet employs numerous poetic techniques, notably the repetition of words. Psalm 145 could be described as a hymn. The poetic techniques serve to convey the contents of the psalm. It is a persuasive text in which the poet sets out to persuade his readers or hearers that Yahweh should be praised for his greatness, sovereignty and love.
