Environmental Knowledge Nexus: Catalysts for Green Innovation

Salim Balouch, Tayyebeh Vakili Yekan, Salimeh Kordi Tamandani

This study investigates the interplay of green human resource management (GHRM) and green transformational leadership (GTL) on environmental behaviors (EBs) and green innovation performance (GIP) among elementary school teachers in Urmia, Iran, with environmental knowledge (EK) as a mediator. Utilizing a descriptive-correlational design, data were collected from 338 teachers across 17 schools during the 2023–2024 academic year using validated questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) via SmartPLS 3 revealed a significant positive relationship between GHRM and GIP (β=0.228, p<0.01), and between GTL and both GIP (β=0.338, p<0.01) and EBs (β=0.516,p<0.01). However, GHRM showed no direct link with EBs (p=0.091). EK mediated the relationship between GHRM and EBs (β=0.247, p<0.01) and GHRM and GIP (β=0.162, p<0.01), but not between GTL and GIP or EBs. These findings underscore the pivotal role of EK in enhancing green practices in educational settings. Recommendations include implementing in-service environmental training, fostering green organizational culture, and enacting policies to promote EBs and GIP. This study fills a research gap by focusing on educational contexts, offering insights for sustainable development in schools.

Pattath Narayanan Suresh Kumar, Rohith Suresh

Background: Though agricultural farming is considered a peaceful and healthy industry it has a high rate of mortality especially suicide. In India, 11.2% of suicides are reported in the farming sector. Aim: To identify the role of psychosocial factors leading to farmer’s suicide in a farmer’s dominant district of Kerala. Material and Method: One hundred and sixty-six successive suicides in Wayanad district and age, sex, marital status, and financial status matched normal controls residing in the same locality were evaluated and compared on psycho-social demographic variables, life events, and details of suicide. Results: Significantly a greater number of victims were living separately, living in rented homes, had no own land for cultivation, migrated, had marital discord, and strained relationships with relatives. They had loans from private financial enterprises and single money persons, had past attempts, a family history of alcoholism, and highly stressful life events. The most frequent psychiatric diagnosis was alcohol dependence/abuse followed by depression. The majority committed suicide by hanging followed by insecticide poisoning. Intention to commit suicide was expressed by 38.5% and 30.2% were intoxicated at the time of attempt. The venue for the attempt was the own house in 75.7% of cases. Conclusion: This study suggests the following remedial measures to prevent farmers’ suicides. Expert advice to manage financial constraints like availing loans, crop insurance, etc. Guidance from the agricultural department for cost-effective cultivation. Early identification and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

A Technological Framework to Support Asthma Patient Adherence Using Pictograms

Rosa Figueroa, Carla Taramasco, María Elena Lagos et al.

Background: Low comprehension and adherence to medical treatment among the elderly directly and negatively affect their health. Many elderly patients forget medical instructions immediately after their appointments, misunderstand them, or fail to recall them altogether. Some identified causes include the short time slots allocated for appointments in the public health system in Chile, the complex terminology used by healthcare professionals, and the stress experienced by patients during appointments. One approach to improving patients’ adherence to medical treatment is to combine written and oral instructions with graphical elements such as pictograms. However, several challenges arise due to the ambiguity of natural language and the need for pictograms to accurately represent various medication combinations, doses, and frequencies. Objective: This study introduces SIMAP (System for Integrating Medical Instructions with Pictograms), a technological framework aimed at enhancing adherence among asthma patients through the delivery of pictograms via a computational system. SIMAP utilizes a collaborative and user-centered methodology, involving health professionals and patients in the construction and validation of its components. Methods: The technological framework presented in this study is composed of three parts. The first two are medical indications and pictograms related to the treatment of the disease. Both components were developed through a comprehensive and iterative methodology that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative approaches. This methodology includes the utilization of focus groups, interviews, paper and online surveys, as well as expert validation, ensuring a robust and thorough development. The core of SIMAP is the technological component that leveraged artificial intelligence methods for natural language processing to analyze, tokenize, and associate words and their context to a set of one or more pictograms, addressing issues such as the ambiguity in the text, the cultural factor that involves many ways of expressing the same indication, and typographical errors in the indications. Results: Firstly, we successfully validated 18 clinical indications along with their respective pictograms. Some of the pictograms were redesigned based on the validation results. However, in the final validation, the comprehension percentages of the pictograms exceeded 70%. Furthermore, we developed a software called SIMAP, which translates medical indications into previously validated pictograms. Our proposed software, SIMAP, achieves a correct mapping rate of 96.69%. Conclusions: SIMAP demonstrates great potential as a technological component for supplementing medical instructions with pictograms when tested in a laboratory setting. The use of artificial intelligence for natural language processing can successfully map medical instructions, both structured and unstructured, into pictograms. This integration of textual instructions and pictograms holds promise for enhancing the comprehension and adherence of elderly patients to their medical indications, thereby improving their long-term health.

IP-Light Technologies Gen 2: Intervention Tools on IPLT for Trauma, Phobia, and Psychological Problems

Ifdil Ifdil, Rima Pratiwi Fadli, Nilma Zola et al.

As the fourth industrial revolution guides humanity toward the next stage of civilization, there have been various changes across multiple domains of life. The youngest generations now face a new era in which unexpected problems continuously arise and evolve. Consequently, innovation is needed, especially in psychology and technology. This innovation is important because of the increasing number of issues that plague human life, especially psychological problems, trauma, and phobias. However, modern psychology has not kept pace with these developments. Based on this, the researchers developed a tool called IP-Light Technologies. This tool was developed using a research and development approach. Product testing in the form of prototypes is limited and widely carried out in West Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, DKI Jakarta, and Bali. As a result of testing, the final prototype was widely produced. The perceptual light prototype comprises a set of lamps and a multiplicity of LED lights extending in horizontal wings spaced concerning the main handle; an elongated handle extending from the main handle in the opposite direction, vertically to horizontally; a linear array of illuminated displays located on the display surface of the handle; and numerous control switches mounted on the casing. The device further comprises a power supply, and control circuit wherein the LEDs on both wings are arranged in an array configured so that the combination of each bulb may project high-intensity light. A lamp clip with a spring design can be clipped on the edge of a table or any other surface.

Mental health literacy on youth depression and suicides for teachers and its impact on knowledge, attitudes and help facilitation: A preliminary study

Munivenkatappa Manjula, Bangalore N Roopesh, Binukumar Bhaskarapillai et al.

Background: Depression and suicide are among the most prevalent mental health problems among the adolescents in India. However, help seeking is very poor due to lack of knowledge on mental health among youth and significant individuals in their life. Imparting knowledge to teachers becomes important as youth spend most of their time in the educational set up. The present study aimed at examining the effect of mental health literacy on depression and suicidal behaviours on knowledge, attitudes and help facilitation of teachers. Materials and Methods: The study adopted a stratified sampling method and a sample (N = 102) of high school teachers (8th–12th standard) from both private and government institutions in Bangalore were included in the study. A pre- and post-assessment, single group design with a follow-up after 3 months was adopted. Data were collected using the socio-demographic data sheet and questionnaire prepared to assess the knowledge, attitudes and help facilitation. Results: The mean age of the teachers was 41.74 years, with 80% female respondents and 58.8% of the sample with master's degrees and diplomas in teaching. There was a significant increase in knowledge about the symptoms, consequences of depression and attitude toward depression and suicide. About 16% of the sample had taken steps to help students with distress and facilitated help seeking at 3-month follow-up. Conclusion: Mental health literacy programme has positive impact on the knowledge and helps in improving support and help facilitation behaviours among teachers.

Previous studies have reported some associations between sarcopenia and depressive symptoms. Recently, intracellular water (ICW) and total body water (TBW) have been found to reflect muscle function and muscle mass. ICW/TBW ratio is a marker of sarcopenia that is simple to assess. However, the relationship between ICW/TBW ratio and depression has not been explored in MHD patients. Methods: In our cross-sectional and multi-center study, 3300 adult MHD patients were included from June 1, 2021, to August 30, 2021. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). TBW and ICW were measured by Body Composition Monitor (BCM). Multivariable logistic regression, stratified analyses, and interactive analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between ICW/TBW ratio and depression. Results: About 16.5% of the 3300 MHD patients were found to have depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depression increased with decreasing quartiles of ICW/TBW ratios, and decreased ICW/TBW ratio was independently associated with depression after adjusting for potential confounders. Patients in Quartile 1 of ICW/TBW ratios were more likely to have depressive symptoms (odds ratio 1.55, 95% confidence interval 1.07– 2.22; p=0.002) than those in Quartile 4. History of diabetes and education status had interactive roles in the relationship between depression and ICW/TBW ratios (p < 0.05). The association of ICW/TBW ratios and depression existed in patients of both genders and different education levels, but only in non-diabetic patients. Conclusion: In MHD patients, the decreased ratio of ICW/TBW was independently related to high depression rates. Keywords: depression, hemodialysis, intracellular water, total body water

About "Subject" and "Subject Analysis": Viewpoints and Perspectives

Farzaneh Shadanpour, Nosrat Riahinia, Keivan Borna et al.

Objective: Since the discovery and representation of subjects contained in information resources is the most important goal in information description, analysis and retrieval systems, and since subject search is the most common type of user search in databases and library catalogs, in this study what is "subject" and how to analyze and extract subject matters in the process of determining subject keywords for an information resource, as well as some research and operational perspectives are discussed.Methodology: This conceptual paper uses documentary research method to examine the concepts of "subject" and "subject analysis", presented in a selection of related research works in the field of Information Science, as well as considering some corresponding concepts in the field of Computer Science and Natural Language Processing.Findings: Despite various interpretations of what "subject" is, which some assume to be an axiom, and its definition unnecessary, there is consensus, explicitly or implicitly, on its meaning of "aboutness". Subject analysis of information resources, as part of the indexing process, is the analysis and identification of stated topics and concepts and/or obvious features of the information source that may involve manpower, computer algorithms designed to identify textual terms or the combination of the two is done. Each of these methods has its strengths and weaknesses. Search and retrieval problems due to the multiplicity of subject analysis tools and keyword assignment, low usage rate of standard descriptive schemas, inconsistencies between indexed terms assigned by a single indexer at different times, as well as between multiple indexers for the same information resource, human error in general, the inconsistency of users’ search terms with the assigned keywords, and the lack of on time description of resources due to the growing production of them are among the weaknesses of the human subject analysis approach. The application of automated methods of artificial intelligence and natural language processing offers promising prospects for increasing speed and consistency in various processes of describing and organizing information, including the extraction of subject keywords. However, evaluating the efficiency of the output of these methods, alone or in comparison with the keywords of human production, specially from the perspective of users, is required. Conclusion: In the competition of machine algorithms with the human mind in the analysis and recognition of resource subjects, the human mind excels; whether it is an indexer who expresses in his own language what the source is about, or a designer who can design a machine that mimics the computational steps of his mind to saves time and resources. Libraries and information centers can, far from rushing to replace conventional processes and procedures, use the various methods and tools available from the Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning fields to design and develop automated systems for indexing and extracting or assigning subject keywords - and in the larger perspective, automated classification- to use resources (financial, human, and time) for the ultimate goal of maximizing productivity, shortening the subject access path to resources for users, and facilitating the description process.

Fostering compliance with physical distancing by interactive feedback in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: A web-based randomized controlled trial

Tim Kaiser, Inga Mögling, Matthias Feldmann et al.

Background: To slow down the spread of COVID-19, the observance of basic hygiene measures, and physical distancing is recommended. Initial findings suggest that physical distancing in particular can prevent the spread of COVID-19. Objectives: To investigate how information to prevent the spread of infectious diseases should be presented to increase willingness to comply with preventive measures. Methods: In a preregistered online experiment, 817 subjects were presented with either interactively controllable graphics on the spread of COVID-19 and information that enable them to recognize how much the spread of COVID-19 is reduced by physical distancing (experimental group) or text-based information about quantitative evidence (control group). It was hypothesized that participants receiving interactive information on the prevention of COVID-19 infections show a significantly higher willingness to comply with future containment measures than participants reading the text-based information. Explorative analyses were conducted to examine whether other factors influence compliance. Results: As predicted, we found a small effect (d = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.11; 0.23, p < .001) for the tested intervention. The exploratory analysis suggests a decline in compliance later in the study (r = −0.10, 95% CI: −0.15; −0.07). Another significant predictor of change in compliance was health-related anxiety, but the effect was trivial. Conclusions: When presented interactively, information on how the own behavior can help prevent infectious diseases can lead to slightly stronger changes in attitude towards behavioral prevention measures than just text-based information. Given the scalability of this simple internet-based intervention, it could play a role in fostering compliance during a pandemic within universal prevention strategies. Future work on the predictive validity of self-reported compliance and the real-world effects on the intervention is needed.

Enhancing mental health literacy in obsessive-compulsive disorder and reducing stigma via smartphone: A randomized controlled trial protocol

Antonio Chaves, Sandra Arnáez, Diana Castilla et al.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling disorder that can be successfully treated. However, individuals with OCD do not seek or delay seeking treatment. This delay may be explained by poor mental health literacy and stigmatizing attitudes toward OCD in community. In order to work on these variables, a gamified mental health mobile application (app) called esTOCma has been developed. The purpose of this study is to describe the protocol for a study to test the efficacy of esTOCma, increasing mental health literacy and help-seeking intention, reducing the stigmatizing attitudes and social distance suffered by people with OCD, as well as the distress associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Methods: A randomized controlled trial with a crossover design with two conditions (immediate-use App group versus delayed-use App group) will be conducted on a non-clinical adult sample of the community of a minimum size of 200 participants. Participants in the immediate-use App group will start using the app at baseline until completion (10 days); whereas participants in the delayed-use App group will wait 10 days, and then start using the app until completion (10 days). The outcomes will be measured at four assessment points (baseline; 10 days from baseline; and 20 days from baseline; and after 3 months). The following instruments will be administered: Attribution Questionnaire, General Help-Seeking Questionnaire, Social Distance Scale, Mental Health Literacy, Psychoeducation Questionnaire, Social Desirability Scale, Single-Item Self-esteem Scale, and Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised. Discussion: This protocol presents the first study to describe a randomized control trial of a mental health app focused on changing mental health literacy, stigmatizing attitudes, social distance and help-seeking intention associated with OCD. An app intervention of these characteristics is especially relevant nowadays as the COVID-19 pandemic has increased obsessive-compulsive symptoms and severity. An improvement in general knowledge about OCD and a reduction in stigma could be associated with earlier OCD detection and an increase in help-seeking intention, which could result in greater wellbeing. Moreover, normalizing intrusions and knowledge about the cognitive OCD model could serve as a protective variable in vulnerable individuals. Previous studies have partially explored the influencing factors of donation behavior, but effective methods for boosting individuals’ donation behavior remain unclear. Based on the resource dependence theory, our present study further explored the promoting effect of self-affirmation on the relationship among cost, self-control, and individuals’ donation behavior, and provided empirical basis for boosting individuals’ donation behavior. Methods: In preliminary experiment, Carlson’s real donation paradigm was conducted to examine the effect of cost on individuals’ donation behavior. In experiment 1, we examined the effects of cost, self-control ability, and self-affirmation on individuals’ donation behavior. Individuals with high or low self-control ability were assigned to complete the experimental induction of self-affirmation or non-affirmation. Subsequently, all participants completed the donation task under three cost conditions same as preliminary experiment. In experiment 2, we examined the effects of cost, self-control resource, and self-affirmation on individuals’ donation behavior. Participants were assigned to complete the different Stroop task to induce the state of self-control resource exhaustion or non-exhaustion. Then, they completed the priming of self-affirmation or non-affirmation same as experiment 1. Finally, all participants completed the donation task under three cost conditions same as preliminary experiment. Results: The results of preliminary experiment indicated that participants engaged in more donation behavior under low- and medium-cost conditions compared with high-cost condition. The results of experiment 1 demonstrated that self-affirmation exerted a promoting effect on the donation behavior for individuals with low self-control ability under low-, medium-, and high-cost conditions. The results of experiment 2 demonstrated that self-affirmation promoted the donation behavior of individuals with self-control resource exhaustion under low-, medium-, and high-cost conditions. Conclusion: Self-affirmation could promote the donation behavior of individuals with low self-control ability and those with self-control resource exhaustion, whether donation’s cost was high or low. Self-affirmation plays a crucial role for boosting individuals’ donation behavior. Keywords: cost, self-control, self-affirmation, donation behavior

Multi-Validity Process and Factor-Invariance. Perceived Self-Efficacy-Scale for the Prevention of Obesity in Preteens

Gilda Gómez-Peresmitré, Romana Silvia Platas Acevedo, Gisela Pineda-García et al.

Given the lack of scales with a robust psychometric assessment of self-efficacy related to obesity in early adolescence, we aimed to obtain an instrument with high-quality validity and reliability items. Nonrandom samples (<i>N</i> = 2371) classified boys (1174, <i>M</i> = 12.83, <i>SD</i> = 0.84) and girls (1197, <i>M</i> = 12.68, <i>SD</i> = 0.78) from Mexico City and some cities of the Mexican Republic with obesity rates near to the national level mean. A multi-validity process and structural invariance analysis using the Perceived Self-efficacy Scale for Obesity Prevention were performed. A two-factor—physical activity and healthy eating—model with high effect-sized values—girls R2 (0.88, <i>p</i> < 0.01) and boys R2 (0.87, <i>p</i> < 0.01)—were obtained. Each factor explained more than half of the variance with high-reliability coefficients in each group and acceptable adjustment rates. The self-efficacy scale proved to have only girls, an invariant factor structure, or a psychometric equivalence between the groups. The obtained scale showed that a two-factor structure is feasible and appropriate, according to the highest quality of validity and reliability.

Does Psychological Detachment From Work Protect Employees under High Intensified Job Demands?

Jaana Minkkinen, Ulla Kinnunen, Saija Mauno

Technological acceleration is intensifying job demands (IJDs), referring to work intensification, intensified job- and career-related planning and decision-making demands, and intensified learning demands at work. IJDs mean new challenges for workers but recovery from work during off-job time through psychological detachment from work may help employees to maintain their well-being in the context of IJDs. The present study examined the associations between IJDs and emotional exhaustion and the buffering role of psychological detachment in these relationships. Cross-sectional data were collected from four Finnish trade unions in 2018 (N = 3,181). Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling (SEM). Higher IJDs were related to greater emotional exhaustion, and greater psychological detachment from work to lower emotional exhaustion. Of IJDs, work intensification had the strongest relationship with higher emotional exhaustion. As expected, psychological detachment attenuated the positive relationship between IJDs and emotional exhaustion. In general, the group-specific findings for blue-collar and white-collar workers were in line with the results found for the data as a whole. The results underline the beneficial role of psychological detachment from work as a strategy for replenishing resources that protects employees’ occupational well-being in the presence of high IJDs. The potential risks of IJDs in today’s workplaces should be recognized and employees’ opportunities to mentally detach from work during free time should be supported.

Although the relationship between emotion regulation and career outcomes has been well established, potential mechanisms that might account for this relationship are still unclear.Method: This study attempts to narrow this gap by examining the mediating effect of proactivity and job search self-efficacy on the relationship between emotion regulation and career outcomes in a sample consisting of 399 graduates (277 women, 122 men) with ages ranging from 22 to 60 years (M=30.5, SD=8.26).Results: Structural equation modelling showed partial mediation effects of job search self-efficacy between emotion regulation and career outcomes. However, no mediating effect was found for proactivity.Discussion: These results suggest that the promotion of emotion regulation and self-efficacy may be fundamental in the development of programmes for career outcomes. Finally, implications and limitations of the present findings are discussed. Keywords: emotion regulation, career outcomes, proactivity, job search, self-efficacy, graduates

A new model of sustainable change in executive coaching: coachees’ attitudes, required resources and routinisation

Nelia Koroleva

The existing literature lacks theoretical and empirical research when exploring the phenomenon of sustainable change as a result of executive coaching. Despite the rapid growth of executive coaching, there is a disconnection between practice and academic research in assessing sustainable change. This means that reflective practitioners face critical challenges in facilitating sustainable change in their clients, because there is no blueprint for how to implement it. To address these challenges, I present my recent postgraduate investigation undertaken at Oxford Brookes University, which introduces a three-category theoretical model that fills the gap in the current research and offers a practical implementation of sustainable change.
