Modeling the tail risk of crude oil futures using a quantum approach

Minhyuk Jeong, Kwangwon Ahn

Abstract This study proposes a quantum approach to measure the tail risk of crude oil futures. Based on the quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) model, we first model the log return process of crude oil futures. From the equilibrium distribution of QHO model, we calculate the well-known tail risk measures such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES); we confirm that this quantum approach provides precise estimates of in-sample and out-of-sample VaR and ES for crude oil futures. The findings suggest the QHO model for log return process outperforms the geometric Brownian motion for price process and the historical simulation approach. The excellence of QHO model in explaining the tail risk of crude oil futures can be attributed to its fast angular frequency and high probability allocation in excited states. Crude oil market participants can use this study’s analytical framework to precisely measure and manage potential risks in the marketplace. Regulatory authorities can evaluate the degree of crude oil market instability through the current market state of crude oil futures characterized by the QHO model parameters while devising and revising crude oil market regulations. Future research can examine quantum models with (1) different assumptions, e.g., position-dependent diffusion and time-varying equilibrium return, and (2) different potential functions, e.g., infinite and finite square well.

Can place-based policy reduce carbon emissions? Evidence from industrial transformation and upgrading exemplary zone in China

Yuan Feng, Liyuan Wang, Changfei Nie

Abstract The effect of the place-based policies on sustainable development has received substantial attention in economic research. In China, the industrial transformation and upgrading exemplary zone policy is a prominent example of such policies, as it targets old industrial and resource-based cities. The paper provides an early assessment of the policy’s capability to reduce carbon emissions. Specifically, we use data from old industrial and resource-based cities for the period of 2012–2019 and apply the difference-in-differences method to examine the policy’s influence on total carbon emissions and intensity. The results show that the policy can effectively reduce carbon emissions through reducing energy consumption, promoting urban green innovation and tertiary industry agglomeration. Compared to resource-based cities, cities with a low level of economic development and central, western cities, this impact is more notable in old industrial cities, cities with a high level of economic development and eastern cities. Additional analysis reveals that the policy has beneficial spatial radiation impacts on the nearby cities as well. In the meanwhile, the strategy may have a synergy effect on reducing carbon emissions and pollution. The results of this study may have an impact on how nations implement place-based policies and reduce carbon emissions.

A systematic review of Wikidata in Digital Humanities projects

Fudie Zhao

Abstract Wikidata has been widely used in Digital Humanities (DH) projects. However, a focused discussion regarding the current status, potential, and challenges of its application in the field is still lacking. A systematic review was conducted to identify and evaluate how DH projects perceive and utilize Wikidata, as well as its potential and challenges as demonstrated through use. This research concludes that: (1) Wikidata is understood in the DH projects as a content provider, a platform, and a technology stack; (2) it is commonly implemented for annotation and enrichment, metadata curation, knowledge modelling, and Named Entity Recognition (NER); (3) Most projects tend to consume data from Wikidata, whereas there is more potential to utilize it as a platform and a technology stack to publish data on Wikidata or to create an ecosystem of data exchange; and (4) Projects face two types of challenges: technical issues in the implementations and concerns with Wikidata’s data quality. In the discussion, this article contributes to addressing three issues related to coping with the challenges in the specific context of the DH field based on the research findings: the relevance and authority of other available domain sources; domain communities and their practices; and workflow design that coordinates technical and labour resources from projects and Wikidata.

Prioritization preferences for COVID-19 vaccination are consistent across five countries

Simon Munzert, Sebastian Ramirez-Ruiz, Başak Çalı et al.

Abstract Vaccination against COVID-19 is making progress globally, but vaccine doses remain a rare commodity in many parts of the world. New virus variants require vaccines to be updated, hampering the availability of effective vaccines. Policymakers have defined criteria to regulate who gets priority access to the vaccination, such as age, health complications, or those who hold system-relevant jobs. But how does the public think about vaccine allocation? To explore those preferences, we surveyed respondents in Brazil, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United States from September to December of 2020 using ranking and forced-choice tasks. We find that public preferences are consistent with expert guidelines prioritizing health-care workers and people with medical preconditions. However, the public also considers those signing up early for vaccination and citizens of the country to be more deserving than later-comers and non-citizens. These results hold across measures, countries, and socio-demographic subgroups.

Home-Based Acculturation and Chinese Attitude Toward Intercultural Marriage: A Cross-Generational Comparison

Qingqing Hu, Peng Pan, Xiaochun Chen

This paper explores factors associated with intergenerational differences in home-based acculturation (HBA) and the attitude of Chinese college students and their parents toward intercultural marriage with a focus on China’s cultural context where parents have a strong influence on child’s decisions. In two related studies, we recruited a total of 749 Chinese college students and parents (387 in Study 1 and 362 in Study 2; all are living in China) to participate in the survey. The results indicate that (a) online intercultural contact is positively associated with HBA; (b) HBA is a strong predictor of attitude of intercultural marriages by Chinese parents and college students and the socioeconomic status has a divergent effect on the two groups; and (c) Chinese college students and parents differ in terms of their HBA and online intercultural contact. Findings from the research add knowledge to our understanding of the impact of globalization and digitalization on acculturation and Chinese residents’ perspectives on intercultural marriage.

Ubiquitous Role of Social Networking in Driving M-Commerce: Evaluating the Use of Mobile Phones for Online Shopping and Payment in the Context of Trust

Syed Far Abid Hossain, Zhao Xi, Mohammad Nurunnabi et al.

The article analyzes the role of driving m-commerce with social networking and therefore provides insight into how the application of mobile apps influences customers’ perceptions on purchasing products online and on the mode of payment. The consumers are engaged in social interactions through the internet by the new opportunities provided by social media. These interactions provide and generate certain values for both businesses and consumers. An upsurge in the application of social media on mobile phones by users is evident, giving optimism and the ability to view the role of the integration of m-commerce into social media. Certain criteria like mobile app compatibility, trust, perceived value of mobile phone apps for online shopping, and online payment are examined from the point of view of consumers who purchase products, save purchase time, and provide easy use and security through social networking sites and m-commerce. Adoption of a digital mode of payment is affected by the education level of the consumers as, if they are internet savvy, they will be more inclined to use the digital payment mode. The article not only discusses the role of education in the better understanding of consumers toward the application of online modes of transaction through mobile phones, but also indicates that there are security issues, although these have been resolved to some extent by technological advances. Yet, there is need for the retailers as well as the consumers to achieve further technological progress.

Tuning the discipline of history in the United States: Harmony (and dissonance) in teaching and learning

Daniel J McInerney

Tuning's progress in the discipline of history in the United States since 2009 illustrates the project's continuing capacity to develop “educational structures and programmes on the basis of diversity and autonomy”, maintaining the initiative's original European Union commitment in a markedly different academic environment across the Atlantic. Struggling initially against a backdrop of confusion, hesitancy, and resistance among US faculty, Tuning has been adopted by a steadily expanding number of educators in individual institutions, state systems, and the history discipline's premier professional society. Though operating, at times, in an uneven, imprecise, or pro forma manner, Tuning in the US manages to address several important goals: bringing a more coherent frame of reference to scattered conversations about higher education; framing a more meaningful discussion about the knowledge, skills, and non-monetized “value” developed through higher education; focusing on the central role of faculty discipline experts in the work of assessment, accreditation, and accountability; and engaging professional scholarly societies on questions of teaching and learning.

Considerations about reward mechanisms and maintaining the functional nature of tonal music

Marcelo Muniz, Maria Ines Nogueira

From the end of the 1990s, several studies based on imaging evidenced the participation of reward mechanisms in the hearing of tonal music. Tonal music is constructed from a set of discrete elements (musical notes) organized in time according to mathematical reasons and well-defined structural relationships, thus enabling, through the repetition of listening, the apprehension of the rules of construction and, consequently, the formation of expectations. Reward mechanisms correspond to systems which are responsive to expectations, comprising three components, formed by partially dissociable neural substrates, related to motivation, learning and hedonia. This paper seeks connections between the characteristics of tonal musical structure and material and the process of musical apprehension and activation of reward systems, suggesting the important role of such mechanisms in maintaining the longevity of tonal music in modern society, particularly in relation to its functional nature.
