The role of physical activity during pregnancy and its impact on the course of labour and labor outcomes - a review of literature

Anna Krysińska, Antonina Drzewiecka, Artur Drzewiecki et al.

Introduction: Pregnancy is a transformative stage in a woman’s life, often accompanied by questions and concerns about the safety of both the mother and the developing child. Key aspects of daily life, including physical activity, diet, and work, are frequently scrutinized, with many misconceptions persisting about what constitutes a healthy pregnancy. However, scientific evidence consistently demonstrates that an active and healthy pregnancy benefits both maternal and neonatal outcomes.  Aim of the study: This study aims to synthesize current knowledge on the role of physical activity during pregnancy and its impact on labor outcomes. By reviewing recent research, we seek to provide a comprehensive overview of the benefits of physical activity, address barriers to exercise during pregnancy, and highlight evidence-based recommendations. The goal is to raise awareness among healthcare providers and pregnant women about the importance of incorporating physical activity into prenatal care. Materials and methods: This study incorporated evidence from peer-reviewed articles, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials. Over 55 studies, available on PubMed and Google Scholar were analysed and critically reviewed to create a comprehensive overview of the topic.   Conclusion: Physical activity during pregnancy is a vital component of prenatal care that promotes maternal and neonatal well-being. Regular exercise reduces the likelihood of pregnancy complications and improves delivery outcomes. Additionally, it offers long-term benefits for neonatal development. While current guidelines provide a general framework for exercise during pregnancy, personalized recommendations tailored to individual needs are essential to maximize safety and efficacy. This research emphasizes the importance of raising awareness among healthcare providers and pregnant women about the critical role of physical activity in improving health outcomes during pregnancy and beyond.

Study of Impact of Lifestyle Modification on Diabetes and Prediabetes in an Urban Population

Gode Yogesh, Patond Swapnil, Wankhade Vishwajit et al.

Diabetes mellitus has emerged as a prevalent noncommunicable disease worldwide. It ranks among the top causes of mortality in high-income countries and has reached epidemic proportions in newly developing nations.1 Continuous medical care and monitoring is required in Diabetes mellitus along with multi-factorial risk reduction strategies along associated with glycemic control. Due to population aging, growth, urbanization, a lack of physical exercise, and a high incidence of obesity, there are more persons with DM. Lifestyle factors include eating patterns, exercise routines, alcohol consumption, and smoking. An improvement in these parameters would lead to better adherence to hypoglycemic medications. An epidemiological study on diabetes and prediabetes in an urban area with reference to lifestyle modification. An interventional community-based study was conducted in an urban setup. Personal interviews using a semi-structured, pretested questionnaire were the main technique of data gathering. Detailed information has been taken on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics at both the individual and household levels. All responders provided their willingly given consent. Every second household was visited by systematic random sampling procedure to select 400 respondents. Finally, analysis was carried out on 346 respondents. All respondents were questioned using structured a pretested, questionnaire after taking informed consent. Significant difference was observed with positive family history of diabetes, obesity, physical activities in male, high calorie intake, stress, chewable tobacco and blood pressure level with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Compared to responders with normal level of blood glucose, pre diabetics and diabetics individual showed more positive family histories. Compared to responders with normal blood glucose levels, pre-diabetics and diabetics were more likely to be overweight. With regard to personal habits of the respondents, smoking was associated with more than 1-fold increase risk of obtaining serum glucose level >110 mg/dl as compared to non-smokers.The current research was an attempt to examine the effect of intervention with reference to life style modification. From the study, it is evident that overall awareness about diabetes has been found low and no awareness has been found about pre-diabetes. The present study also demonstrated that education is the fundamental tool to make the population aware of their health issues. Awareness about pre-diabetes and diabetes, which can make them beneficial for community and nation and so, they can play an innovative role for prevention of diabetes.

Evaluation of nature-based tourism potential in protected and sensitive areas by CRITIC and PROMETHEE-GAIA methods

Kuttusi Zorlu, Volkan Dede

This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the nature-based tourism (NBT) potential in three Karagöl (“blacklake” in Turkish), Borçka, Şavşat and Murgul, which are located in Artvin Province. Among the mentioned lakes, Şavşat Karagöl has been taken under protection as a national park, and Borçka Karagöl has been brought under protection as a nature protection area. Murgul Karagöl, on the other hand, does not have any protection status. The Criteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) and Preference Ranking Organisation Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE)-Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid (GAIA) techniques were used to evaluate the nature-based tourism potentials of the lakes. In this context, twenty-six criteria obtained from the literature and weighted by the CRITIC technique were evaluated by comparing them with the three available alternatives. In the next stage, the evaluation of the alternatives according to the weighted criteria was provided by the PROMETHEE-GAIA technique. According to the results, the lake with the highest NBT potential in lakes in Artvin Province is Borçka Karagöl Nature Park. The lake with the lowest potential is Murgul Karagöl, which has not yet been discovered, and its infrastructure has not been completed. It is thought that the results may be significant in providing various practical implications for local stakeholders on NBT that can be developed in the region.

Use of digital platforms by autistic children and young people for creative dress-up play (cosplay) to facilitate and support social interaction

Alice Leyman

Autistic children and young people who find physical interaction challenging may feel more able to communicate in familiar environments. Communication and social interaction utilising digital online platforms and spaces may provide such an environment, with a comfortable level of engagement that can be relatively controlled. As blogs, vlogs, and online uploads are often live and up to date, these constitute useful first-hand perspectives, particularly for and from neurodiverse individuals who may find physical interaction and communication difficult and confusing. As an initial source of their perspectives, together with the views of their stakeholders, thematic analysis of autistic authors and bloggers within the community was conducted from digital publicly available blog posts and published articles in relation to a particular activity - cosplay. Analysis was performed in relation to independent sole and group cosplay (dress-up) play activities within the physical home and digital online spaces to ascertain if, and if so, to what extent dress up creative and character cosplay is used by autistic individuals as a response to socio-spatial exclusions, to create own space within which to belong and exhibit agency.Findings, using Grounded Theory for thematic analysis, revealed a connection between autistic children and young people's feeling of exclusion in socio-material space and their pursuit of activites that sought friendship and like-minded others online. Within these digital spaces autistic individual are finding means and the ability to communicate together. Digital spaces for cosplay practice are encouraging feelings of acceptance whilst also providing a platform to be themselves and feel confident to reach out to, and engage with others.

Geospatial Web Services Discovery through Semantic Annotation of WPS

Meriem Sabrine Halilali, Eric Gouardères, Mauro Gaio et al.

This paper presents an approach to GWS (GeospatialWeb Service) discovery through the semantic annotation of WPS (Web Processing Service) service descriptions. The rationale behind this work is that search engines that use appropriate semantic-based similarity measures in the matching process are more accurate in terms of precision and recall than those based on syntactic matching alone. The lack of semantics in the description of services using a standard such as WPS prevents the use of such a matching process and is considered a limitation of GWS discovery. The GWS discovery approach presented is based on the consideration of semantics in the service description method and in the matching process. The description of services is based on a semantic lightweight meta-model instantiated in the WPS 2.0 standard, extending the description of the service through metadata tags. The matching process is performed in three steps (functionality matching step, I/O (Input/Output) matching step and non-functional matching step). Its core is a semantic similarity measure that combines logical and non-logical matching methods. Finally, the paper presents the results of an experiment applying the proposed discovery approach on a GWS corpus, showing promising results and the added value of the three-step matching process.

Temperature Acquisition System for Real Time Application of First Velocity Correction by EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement)

Felipe Andrés Carvajal Rodriguez, Luis Augusto Koenig Veiga, Wilson Alcântara Soares

The first velocity correction is used to correct the measured distance affected by the velocity variation of the electromagnetic wave propagation in a medium. This correction depends on the refractive index of the propagation medium and reference refractive index. The influence of the temperature in the medium refractive index is critical; some estimates establish that variation 1°C causes 1ppm of error in distances. In the measuring processes with total stations, the temperature is usually collected at only one point, for example, in the position where the measuring instrument is setup. However, the wave propagates in a medium of non-constant temperature, where the extremes of the line can present variations and thus this measurement in only one point could be non-representative. In this context, it was developed a low-cost real-time temperature acquisition system. This system provides the temperature values in different locations allowing their monitoring through the time. Experiments realized during the geodetic monitoring of a dam, show variations up to 8°C among geodetic points on the dam and around it. An analysis was development to evaluate the influence of temperature variations on monitoring distances and geodetic coordinate of a 2d network with different approaches (temperature modeling).  The results shows different values for distances (1.0 mm) and coordinates (0.5 mm) depending of the approach choose.

Agricultura y Alimentación en el México Prehispánico y siglo XVI/Agriculture and Food in Pre-Hispanic Mexico and the 16th Century.

ABSTRACT The emergence of agriculture in Mexico was a factor of great relevance, which allowed the development of Mesoamerican cultures more than three thousand years of history. The geographical location of the different ethnic groups that inhabited this region allowed the cultivation of a wide variety of plants, such as corn, beans, pumpkin and chili, basic products in the Mesoamerican diet, as well as other products were developed according to the geographic characteristics and climatological, such as cocoa, from which chocolate is obtained, and even vanilla, being appreciated all over the world. Those original products were mixed with those brought by Europeans in the sixteenth century and this gave rise to Mexican cuisine, which in 2010 was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Key words: Mesoamerican cultures, Mexican gastronomy, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Pregnant women’s perception and attitudes toward modern and traditional midwives and the perceptional impact on health seeking behaviour and status in rural Ghana

Prince Peprah, Emmanuel Mawuli Abalo, Julius Nyonyo et al.

This qualitative study was conducted in some selected rural communities within the Birim South District between March to June 2017 with the main aim of teasing out insights into Ghana’s perspective of pregnant women’s attitudes and perceptions about modern and traditional midwives and perceptional impact on health seeking behaviour and status. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first known study in Ghana that has provided empirical evidence on this subject. The study found that pregnant women have good attitudes and perceptions toward traditional midwives based on their personal experiences, beliefs and philosophies. Thus, pregnant women only see the need to seek the service of modern midwives when serious complications occur during childbirth and predominantly have their deliveries supervised by traditional midwives. These results call for, specifically two main policy interventions. First, behavioral change interventions through education, community sensitisation and awareness, is required. This should target family members, especially husbands and mothers in-law who are key household decision makers. This will radically help change the conservative attitudes and perceptions about modern midwives by pregnant women. Second, based on the support offered and willingness showed by the study participants, effective intercultural midwifery system will help maximise the utilisation of our midwifery and health delivery systems. Traditional and modern midwives need to work together to ensure safe birth. We consider collaboration among healthcare providers as critical, especially in the rural areas where the number of modern midwives are limited. Modeling Impacts of Climate Change on Giant Panda Habitat

M. Songer, M. Delion, Alex Biggs et al.

Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) are one of the most widely recognized endangered species globally. Habitat loss and fragmentation are the main threats, and climate change could significantly impact giant panda survival. We integrated giant panda habitat information with general climate models (GCMs) to predict future geographic distribution and fragmentation of giant panda habitat. Results support a major general prediction of climate change—a shift of habitats towards higher elevation and higher latitudes. Our models predict climate change could reduce giant panda habitat by nearly 60% over 70 years. New areas may become suitable outside the current geographic range but much of these areas is far from the current giant panda range and only 15% fall within the current protected area system. Long-term survival of giant pandas will require the creation of new protected areas that are likely to support suitable habitat even if the climate changes.
