Principles of Critical Discourse Analysis

Teun A. van Dijk

This paper discusses some principles of critical discourse analysis, such as the explicit sociopolitical stance of discourse analysts, and a focus on dominance relations by elite groups and institutions as they are being enacted, legitimated or otherwise reproduced by text and talk. One of the crucial elements of this analysis of the relations between power and discourse is the patterns of access to (public) discourse for different social groups. Theoretically it is shown that in order to be able to relate power and discourse in an explicit way, we need the `cognitive interface' of models, knowledge, attitudes and ideologies and other social representations of the social mind, which also relate the individual and the social, and the micro- and the macro-levels of social structure. Finally, the argument is illustrated with an analysis of parliamentary debates about ethnic affairs.

A WOMAN IS NO MAN. A TRANSLATOR IS (NO) AUTHOR? RESISTING THE SHARED SUBORDINATION OF WOMEN AND TRANSLATORS THROUGH TRANSLATORHANDLING

Ayşe Saki Demirel

This article proposes translatorhandling as a conceptual framework to theorize the intentional and strategic interventions made by feminist translators across textual, peritextual, and epitextual realms. It aims to expand the current understanding of translator visibility and reframe the role of the feminist translator within the evolving field of Feminist Translation Studies (FTS). This study argues that through translatorhandling, feminist translators not only 'womanhandle' texts to amplify silenced women's voices and make language speak for women but also assert their creative agency and professional visibility primarily through epitextual channels. Etaf Rum's A Woman is No Man and its Turkish translation, Kadının Sesi Yok ['A woman has no voice'] by Arzu Altınanıt, constitute the case of this research. Thematic analysis of Altınanıt's blog, Bir Çevirmenin Dünyası ['A Translator's World'], and her X (formerly Twitter) posts demonstrates how she engages in translatorhandling as a form of dual resistance: amplifying women's voices and challenging the systemic invisibility of translators. The findings reveal how she publicly claims interpretive agency, contests the industry's erasure of translators, and positions herself as a co-creator. Mapping this emerging practice, the article highlights translatorhandling as a powerful feminist intervention that transcends textual boundaries, positioning translator's voice as a force of solidarity and transformation in public discourse.

Petersburg jako przestrzeń osobistego doświadczenia we wczesnej prozie Ariny Obuch

Bartłomiej Brążkiewicz

SAINT PETERSBURG AS A SPACE OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN ARINA OBUKH’S EARLY PROSE This article explores the early prose of Arina Obukh, a representative of the youngest generation of Petersburg writers, through the lens of cultural memory, urban semiotics, and autobiographical narrative. Central to the analysis is the concept of “the city as personal experience,” which emerges as a distinct interpretive category expanding traditional notions of the “Petersburg Text” in Russian literature. Her prose does not merely depict the city but actively shapes its literary representation and cultural identity, blending subjective perception with broader historical and artistic contexts. Departing from the traditionally sombre tone of Petersburg urban prose, Obukh offers a subtle, reflective, and often ironic portrayal of the city, where it functions as both a setting and an active agent in identity formation and memory construction. The autobiographical dimension – rooted in the author’s personal history, artistic education, and family legacy – plays a pivotal role in shaping her literary vision. By intertwining literary, spatial, and visual elements, Obukh constructs a unique narrative that transforms everyday urban experiences into culturally meaningful texts. Her prose stands at the intersection of individual memory and collective heritage, making a significant contribution to the evolving discourse on contemporary Russian urban literature.

Prioritizing information over grammar: a behavioral investigation of information density and rhetorical discourse effects on EFL listening comprehension

Mohamed A. Mekheimer, A. I. Fageeh

Abstract This study investigated the impact of information density on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) listening comprehension, testing the hypothesis that listeners prioritize message understanding in information-rich discourse over grammar-focused analysis in rhetorical discourse. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 26 EFL college students, who listened to two audio passages: one information-rich and the other rhetorical. Behavioral measures, including listening comprehension scores and response times, revealed that participants demonstrated significantly higher comprehension accuracy (96% vs 44.3% accuracy) and faster processing times (37 min versus 41 min) when listening to the information-rich audio compared to the rhetorical audio (p < .005). Survey data further indicated that participants prioritized semantic content extraction over grammatical analysis, especially when engaging with the rhetorical passage. These findings support the hypothesis that listeners strategically adjust cognitive processing based on discourse information density, favoring meaning extraction in more informative contexts, with a decrease in grammatical parsing routines. The results highlight the role of information density in L2 listening comprehension and suggest that language learning materials should prioritize informative discourse to facilitate more efficient and effective processing.

Exploring Public Reactions to Individuals’ Substance Misuse Recovery Journeys on TikTok

Marina Culo, Celina Ha, Amanda Wong et al.

Background: Social media has become a space for sharing personal experiences and shaping public opinion. This study explored how people respond to substance misuse recovery journeys shared on TikTok. Methods: The researchers collected 3583 comments from 350 TikTok videos under the hashtags #wedorecover, #recovery, and #sobertok using a scraper tool. A discourse analysis categorized comments into Narrative Strategies, Rhetorical Strategies, Linguistic Features, and Power Relationships, each with subcategories revealing public perceptions of substance use and recovery. A correlation analysis was also conducted to examine the role of emojis across narrative and linguistic features. Results: Most comments (94%) expressed support or positivity toward recovery videos. The heart emoji was the most common (93.35% of all emojis), symbolizing connection, encouragement, and solidarity. Four themes emerged reflecting public attitudes: encouragement and positive messaging, acknowledgment of struggle, the culture of sharing, and the influence of broader social narratives. Conclusions: These results provide insight into public responses to recovery content on TikTok, suggesting that peer support may be facilitated through the platform’s algorithmic design. While TikTok shows promise as a supportive digital space, further research is needed to understand its broader implications for substance use recovery support.

FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC MEANS OF EMOTIONAL IMPACT IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Yuliia Ovchar

The study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the functional characteristics of linguistic and stylistic means of emotional influence that function in the modern political discourse of the information space, forming political narratives to achieve emotional influence on the audience. The relevance of the study is accompanied by modern communication theory, which allows for a deep analysis of the influence of the media on human consciousness and the characteristics of the functional features of linguistic and stylistic means of emotional influence in political discourse. The purpose of the study is to analyze the functional characteristics of linguistic and stylistic means used for emotional influence in political discourse and to determine their role in the formation of public opinion and political behavior. The task of the study is to describe the functional features of the identified linguistic and stylistic means and to determine the contextual factors that determine the effectiveness of the use of various linguistic and stylistic means of emotional influence in political discourse. The study used the following research methods: analysis of scientific literature, content analysis, discourse analysis, and comparative analysis. The globalization of society in the 21st century and the increasing complexity of communication ties have made the issue of the influence of media on humans relevant. In the context of socio-economic and political shifts that break many familiar life stereotypes, the effect of the impact of the mass media on the audience is undesirable. The study contains a comprehensive and systematic approach to the functional characteristics of linguistic and stylistic means of emotional influence in political discourse, since in the context of the growing role of information technologies and media in political life and understanding the mechanisms of emotional influence allows us to critically evaluate political narratives, identify manipulative strategies and promote the development of media literacy in society. The analysis of these means in the context of modern political processes in Ukraine and the world is especially important.

Genes or nurture? Discussion of the wrong question

Arkadiusz Wąsiński

The paper presents a polemics with a thesis formulated by J. Harris that group socialization theory is an alternative to family nurture. The thesis, indeed, “annihilates” the nurture category and the existing achievements of education sciences off the scientific discourse. The text focuses on an analysis of consistency of arguments regarding the main aspects of the theory in question, identified at four levels of tensions between: genes and environment, child and adult, family and peer group, and being raised in the family and socialization in peer group. The inconsistencies and overinterpretations, expressed by J. Harris in her “systemic” depreciation of child-rearing, inspired some reflections about the possible roles of nurture viewed in the paradigm of biological and spiritual evolution synthesis.

On Professional Values Under a State of War: Exile Journalists From Ukraine in Russia

Pavel V. Volkov, Olga A. Baysha

This paper discusses the case of exile journalists from Ukraine who moved to Russia between 2014 and 2022. What, in terms of journalistic norms, was unacceptable to them in the Ukrainian journalistic field? What did they find problematic in this respect in Russia? These were the basic questions driving the research, in the course of which 15 exile journalists were interviewed; their answers were analysed using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. The findings presented in the paper show that, despite all the difficulties of their personal situations, exile journalist still consider professional values such as independence and truth-telling to be important, continuing to use these normative yardsticks to measure the quality of the journalistic condition. The biggest concern that most of the informants shared was that journalists in both Russia and Ukraine used the language of hatred and discrimination toward political and cultural others, that is so-called antagonistic discourse that only contribute to the spiralling of violence and can never help in reaching peace. These findings allow the suggestion that by occupying a unique position from which to witness the contingency of hegemonic orders exile journalists advocating for peace may re-affirm the values of human dignity and peaceful coexistence, two basic principles of the journalistic profession, as identified by UNESCO.

Evidential Markers in German Scientific and Popular Science Discourse: Comparative Analysis

E. V. Bodnaruk, T. N. Astakhova

The purpose of this article is a comparative analysis of evidential markers in German-language texts of scientific and popular science discourse. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that today there are no scientific works devoted to comparing the means of expressing evidentiality in these types of discourse. Evidence markers contain a link to the source of the information. The researchers note that indicating the source of information increases the degree of reliability of the reported information. One of the main characteristics of scientific and popular science discourse is intertextuality, which is expressed with the help of evidential markers that vary depending on the discourse. The material of the study was 5 texts (299 mentions of the source of information) of scientific and 28 texts (281 mentions of the source of information) of popular science discourse in German, dedicated to the problems of the Arctic. As a result of the study, it was found that statements with evidential meanings “direct evidentiality” and “citation” are more common in scientific discourse than in popular science. At the same time, full citations are less common in scientific texts than in popular science ones. The meaning “rumors” as well as fragmentary quoting are rather rare in both discourses. The lowest frequency was found by the value “inferentiality”, fixed only in the texts of popular science discourse.
