Developing a Liberal Arts Micro-Degree Program : A Case Study of K University

Baole Choi, Seung Bong Jeon, Hyejin Yang et al.

This study explores the feasibility of establishing liberal arts micro-degree programs at K University, an engineering-centered institution, and aims to develop such programs based on a competency-based education approach. To achieve this, the study conducted a comprehensive investigation including literature reviews, analysis of domestic and international cases, focus group interviews (FGIs) with liberal arts and major faculty members as well as university career officers, written consultations with corporate HR managers, and surveys of current students. The findings revealed that many universities have already implemented liberal arts micro-degree programs, often focusing on competencies such as communication, leadership, and self-management. According to the FGIs, faculty and career advisors emphasized the need for thorough examination of feasibility and effectiveness, recommending that clear objectives be established to complement existing curricula. HR professionals from corporations expressed a strong demand for graduates equipped with both fundamental character and essential workplace competencies. While students demonstrated low awareness of the micro-degree system, they showed high willingness to enroll in the proposed programs. Based on these findings, the study proposes two liberal arts micro-degree programs: “Cooperation and Conflict Resolution” and “Responsible Engineer,” presenting their respective goals, courses, and structures. This study is significant in that it presents liberal arts micro-degrees as a new educational model that not only preserves the foundational mission of general education but also enhances students’ practical job competencies.

Factors influencing trust in algorithmic decision-making: an indirect scenario-based experiment

Fernando Marmolejo-Ramos, Rebecca Marrone, Malgorzata Korolkiewicz et al.

Algorithms are involved in decisions ranging from trivial to significant, but people often express distrust toward them. Research suggests that educational efforts to explain how algorithms work may help mitigate this distrust. In a study of 1,921 participants from 20 countries, we examined differences in algorithmic trust for low-stakes and high-stakes decisions. Our results suggest that statistical literacy is negatively associated with trust in algorithms for high-stakes situations, while it is positively associated with trust in low-stakes scenarios with high algorithm familiarity. However, explainability did not appear to influence trust in algorithms. We conclude that having statistical literacy enables individuals to critically evaluate the decisions made by algorithms, data and AI, and consider them alongside other factors before making significant life decisions. This ensures that individuals are not solely relying on algorithms that may not fully capture the complexity and nuances of human behavior and decision-making. Therefore, policymakers should consider promoting statistical/AI literacy to address some of the complexities associated with trust in algorithms. This work paves the way for further research, including the triangulation of data with direct observations of user interactions with algorithms or physiological measures to assess trust more accurately.

A Comparative Study on the Development of Communication Competence through the ‘Writing’ and ‘Presentation and Discussion’ Courses within Liberal Arts Education : A Case Study of N University

Youngju Hur

The purpose of this study is to identify ways to improve the liberal arts courses ‘Writing’ and ‘Presentation and Discussion’ by comparing the degree of improvement in communication competence among students who have taken these courses. To achieve this purpose, a pre-test and post-test on communication competence were administered to students enrolled in the ‘Writing’ and ‘Presentation and Discussion’ course during the first semester of 2025. The results of the study are as follows. First, the communication competence of students who took the ‘Writing’ course improved. Among the sub-competencies, ‘expression and delivery’ showed significant improvement, while ‘listening and understanding’ and ‘adjustment and resolution’ did not show statistically significant improvement. Second, the communication competence of students who took the ‘Presentation and Discussion’ course also improved. All sub-competencies showed significant improvement, with ‘adjustment and resolution’ demonstrating the greatest increase. Third, the overall improvement in communication competence, as well as in all three sub-competencies, was significantly higher in the ‘Presentation and Discussion’ course than in the ‘Writing’ course. Based on the research findings, the following recommendations are proposed. To enhance communication competence, the content of courses should be organized in a cyclical and developmental sequence of reading, thinking, writing, and speaking. In addition, the ‘Writing’ course should include topics that not only encourage students to express their own thoughts and emotions, but also require them to understand the thoughts and emotions of others. Furthermore, it is important to develop and provide weekly activity sheets that support students' project and team-based activities, and to regularly rotate team members to promote diverse collaboration.

Liberating Minds: The Intellectual Legacy of Angela Davis and Its Images in Film

Michelle Sales, Bruno Muniz

We propose thinking of Angela Davis's intellectual legacy from a decolonial perspective. We point out that just as the fight for civil rights and the end of racial segregation in the United States helped to consolidate the Black movement in Brazil, the circulation of anti-colonial ideas during the struggles for the decolonization of African countries in the 1950s and 60s was crucial to the circulation of abolitionist ideas and anti-racist movements in the United States and abroad. We will analyze interchanges capable of pointing out "the recognition of multiple and heterogeneous colonial differences, as well as the multiple and heterogeneous reactions of populations and subjects subordinated to the coloniality of power" (Bernardino-Costa & Grosfoguel, 2016, p. 21). Our contribution seeks to analyze Davis as a public and militant intellectual through her images in film. Beyond considering Angela Davis's image in cinema as representation, we also analyze how her intellectual and political activities were involved with the flourishing of a new Black cinema in the United States. This paper analyzes films such as Child of Resistance (1973), Free Angela and All Political Prisoners (2015), and 13th (2016).

Analysis of the Perception and Satisfaction of Instructors and Learners on the Operation of the Liberal Arts Curriculum -Focusing on C University

Hye Yeon Huh, Mi Jeong Kim

The purpose of this study was to derive a plan to improve the quality of the liberal arts curriculum by comparing learners and instructors' perceptions and satisfaction levels with the current status of the liberal arts curriculum at C University in Korea. Questions on awareness and satisfaction with the curriculum were developed, and online surveys were conducted for all members. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and content analysis methods. The findings reveled the following points.First, the items that represented the instructors and learners’high awareness levels of the liberal arts curriculum were“operation based on the educational purpose and core competencies of liberal arts education”and “the liberal arts education completion system,” respectively.Second, the item denoting instructors' satisfaction with the liberal arts curriculum was “change according to the results of consulting diagnosis,”and the reason given is that they perceive the shift in and the need to manage the quality of liberal arts education. Learners were highly contented with the “cultured education completion system”regarding (when you say “as in” do you mean “regarding” or “the same for”?) awareness. This is owing to the fact that the area is organized such that various courses can be completed, and a student is able to choose and listen to the desired subject.Third, learners have a higher awareness of the university's liberal arts education completion system than instructors and are slightly more satisfied with certain aspects, such as the fact that “cultured education operates based on educational purposes and core competencies” and in regards to the “cultured education completion system operation.”Finally, based on the results, implications for improving the quality of the liberal arts curriculum and future studies are suggested.

Fan discourse: peculiarities of creation andconsumption on the example of football communities in vk.com social network / Фанатский дискурс: особенности создания и потребления на примере футбольных сообществ в социальной сети ВКонтакте

The study is dedicated to the analysis of the features of the formation of online fan discourse in asynchronous multimodal discursive fields on the Internet on the example of football communities in the social network vk.com. The empirical base of the study was network data (posts on community and group walls, comments on posts, statistics on likes of posts and comments, statistics on reposts, popular posts) obtained from the 3 most popular Russian football-themed online communities and uploaded through the vk.com API interface. On the basis of the processed network data the discursive fields of football communities were built and analyzed. This allowed for describing culturally significant concepts and the scenarios of communicative behavior of football fans conditioned by them, as well as to identify universal and specific scenarios of communicative patterns of behavior in the fan culture.

In order to differentiate themselves within saturated markets, brands are constantly looking for distinctive ways to create value. Thus, they often turn to techniques inspired by the worlds of arts and culture. The integration of brands within the world of art is perfectly illustrated by the development of branded museums. Hybrid institutions at the crossroads of culture and commerce, these museums have up until now been analyzed in marketing research as simply spectacular sales spaces. This article proposes to analyze these branded museums through the prism of heritage studies, in order to understand the process of turning a brand into a cultural artefact, redefining its relationship with clients beyond that of commerce. An ethnographic exploration of two branded museums — the Fallot Museum and the Vache qui rit House — allows us to identify the values (tradition, authenticity, significance, rarity and beauty) and the operational techniques that transform a product into a cultural object. The results highlight the roles taken on by a brand in this heritage context: the role of intergenerational outreach and of regional representation. In addition to a brand’s capacity to fit into a cultural context, this article underlines the weakening of its commercial function within these museums.

Prywatna wielka własność ziemska na Litwie. Dobra retowskie Marii z Potulickich Ogińskiej w okresie I wojny światowej

Ryszard Nowicki

Large private landed property in Lithuania. The Rietavas estate of Maria Ogińska (née Potulicka) during the First World War The source article presents problems related to the functioning of Maria Ogińska’s private estate in Rietavas, Lithuania, during the First World War. A handwritten report of Kazimierz Rzeszowski, the estate’s manager, found in the National Archives in Krakow, enabled the creation of this article. The estates were located in the territory of the Russian Partition. From 1915, they were under German occupation. For several years, the plenipotentiary took formal and informal measures to secure the Duchess’s assets. As a result of his personal intervention, a palace in Pojeziory, owned by Zygmunt Nagurski, was saved from being burned down. After the end of the war and the establishment of the Lithuanian state, the Rietavas estates were nationalized. The unique manuscript provides information about the fate of the cultural property gathered in the palace in Rietavas. It is a proof of the destruction and dispersion of cultural heritage valuable for Lithuanians and Poles, related to the large private landed property of Ogiński’s princes. Keywords: private property, Lithuania, war, cultural property, Maria Ogińska, Rietavas, 20th century Streszczenie: Artykuł źródłowy przedstawia problemy związane z funkcjonowaniem prywatnych dóbr retowskich Marii Ogińskiej na Litwie w okresie I wojny światowej. Pełnomocnik przez kilka lat podejmował formalne i nieformalne działania, by zabezpieczyć majątek księżnej.

Data Mining and Video Target Detection-Based Analysis of Martial Arts Cultural Communication and Martial Arts Athletes’ Posture

Zhen Ma, Yanping Ma

With the continuous deepening of economic globalization and the continuous development of Internet big data, the spread of martial arts culture has attracted people’s attention. The advent of the Internet big data era has brought new opportunities and media for the dissemination of martial arts culture but also brought certain risks and challenges. This paper firstly uses the literature method, logical analysis method, and related theories of communication, with the help of the SWOT strategic analysis method, to analyze the internal advantages and disadvantages faced by martial arts culture communication itself, as well as the external opportunities in the context of the Internet big data era and challenges. In order to realize the target detection and tracking task of Martial athletes, this paper proposes a target detection and tracking algorithm for Martial athletes. First, the algorithm constructs and trains a fully CNN-based athlete target detection model, which can detect the first frame of athlete targets in martial arts competitions or martial arts training videos. Experiments show that the athlete positioning information output by the detection model and the video frame sequence are jointly input into the athlete target tracking module based on neighborhood similarity, so as to realize the target tracking of martial arts athletes.

Successful Treatment of a Coxofemoral Luxation in a Shetland Pony by Closed Reduction and Prolonged Immobilization Using a Full-Body Animal Rescue Sling

Miriam Sprick, C. Koch

A 12-year-old, 170 kg, Shetland pony mare was presented with an acute severe right pelvic limb lameness and concurrent upward fixation of the right patella. The affected limb was rotated externally and adducted with a prominent greater trochanter and the right calcaneal tuber being more proximal than its left counterpart. Radiographic examination revealed complete dislocation of the right femoral head from the acetabular cavity in a dorsal and caudal direction. A closed reduction of the coxofemoral luxation was performed successfully under general anaesthesia. A full-body animal rescue and transportation sling (ARTS) was applied for the recovery. The reduction was followed by a right-sided medial patellar desmotomy. The pony was supported in the ARTS for a total of eight weeks combined with crossties for the first six weeks. Subsequently, the mare was discharged with instructions to slowly increase walking exercise over a period of two months before returning to her intended use. A follow-up after 22 months attested the successful treatment of a coxofemoral luxation by closed reduction and prolonged immobilization resulting in a regularly exercised pony without any residual lameness.

Bill Brandt: Photography and the Printed Page

Martina Droth, Paul Messier, Richard Caspole et al.

This cover collaboration explores the photography of Bill Brandt (1904–1983) from the perspective of the physical print, drawing attention to its material qualities and practical functions. The small sampling presented here captures some of Brandt’s major visual themes, beginning with his socio-political images of wartime Britain through to his more subjective engagement with landscape and art in the post-war decades. This shift is often seen in terms of Brandt’s career path—from photojournalist in the 1930s and 1940s, to art world photographer in the post-war era. Brandt’s stature as an artist came onto assured footing in the 1960s, with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1961 and 1969, and commercial representation by Marlborough Gallery in the 1970s.1 While Brandt began to print to meet these new expectations, he did not abandon the long-standing practices and interests of his early career: his commitment to the reproduction of photographs on the printed page. Newsprint illustrations and bookplates remained his primary expressive channels. Between 1936 and the year of his death, Brandt published at least one photo-book per decade, as well as contributing dozens of photo-essays and hundreds of individual photographs to illustrated magazines.

Overpaints and inpainting on the “Black flag” by Ljubo Babić

Maja Sucevic Miklin

This paper will present the restoration carried out at the end of 2017 on an oil painting called the “Black flag”, by Ljubo Babić, that stands today as one of the five more important paintings in Croatian modern art history. The focus will be on previous interventions – retouches and overpaintings – that were found on such an important painting, as well as the complex process of inpainting. After a partial removal of the previous interventions, some particles of dirt were still left embedded in the texture. This condition and the artist's paint effects determined the inpainting process. A mimetic inpainting method was chosen, consisting into a two stages process, intermediated with a varnish application: gouache colours to reconstruct the image and pigments mixed with Canada balsam to finish the process. This method resulted in a good reintegration of the retouch and in the overall appearance of the painting.

Habits of Mind as a Framework for Assessment in Music Education

J. Hogan, E. Winner

Music making requires many kinds of habits of mind—broad thinking dispositions potentially useful outside of the music room. Teaching for habits of mind is prevalent in both general and other areas of arts education. This chapter reports a preliminary analysis of the habits of mind that were systematically observed and thematically coded in twenty-four rehearsals of six public high school music ensembles: band, choir, and orchestra. Preliminary results reveal evidence of eight habits of mind being taught: engage and persist, evaluate, express, imagine, listen, notice, participate in community, and set goals and be prepared. However, two habits of mind that the researchers expected to find taught were not observed: appreciate ambiguity and use creativity. These two nonobserved habits are ones that arts advocates and theorists assume are central to arts education. The chapter discusses how authentic assessment of habits of mind in the music classroom may require novel methods, including the development of classroom environments that foster additional levels of student agency.

From people’s experience:

Alejandra Jaramillo-Vázquez

This paper presents the findings of an ethnographic research in the arts organisation, Faro de Oriente. The aim is to understand the distinctions between public cultural policy and ordinary practice in the organisation. Ethnographic research was conducted for 11 months (2011-2012), including participant observation, semi-structured interviews and archival research. This paper argues that while policy makers have configured arts education in an instrumental way, ethnographic research shows disjunctions and negotiations. Participants’ motives for undertaking arts practices and their social relations, challenges the expectations and desirable outcomes of arts education. These motives and social relations emerge in a context of inequalities in Mexico City. This paper contributes to understanding the relationships that emerge outside institutional contexts and the reasons for this. It adds knowledge to understanding how public cultural policy plays out on the ground by examining people’s sociocultural context and their ordinary relations in an arts organisation.

A proposed model of transmission of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong higher education: From oral tradition to conservatoire

Bo-Wah Leung

Transmission of traditional art forms in the modern world has been a major issue in the field of arts education. Different issues have been raised on how to preserve the traditional art forms for further development. Cantonese opera is a representative Chinese opera popular in south China including Hong Kong. However, the genre has been experienced fluctuation since 1950s with the difficulties of transmission through oral tradition to conservatory tradition. While the Hong Kong Government promotes the genre to reserve the cultural tradition, great masters have been fading out and younger generation encounters difficulties in inheriting the genre. This article reports parts of a large-scale study on the nature and characteristics of oral tradition, learning in community settings, conservatory tradition, and proposes a model of transmission of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. The model may shed light on preserving, inheriting, and further developing traditional performing arts in the modern world.
