The role of the genetic factor of lactate transport in endurance sports

Rafia Fathi, Abdul Al Majidi, Khamael Nhab et al.

Background and purpose With the growth of sports results, more and more attention is paid to identifying the role of genetic factors in various metabolic processes. One of these factors is the protein responsible for the transport of lactate. This is especially relevant for sports that require endurance. This study aimed to identify and evaluate different polymorphisms in the Monocarboxylate Transporter 1 gene in a group of elite athletes and assess their effects on athletic performance via genetic analysis. Materials and methods Twenty elite 1500 m runners from the National Athletics Center of the Iraqi Ministry of Sports and Youth participated in this study. The study began on March 1, 2022, at the College of Physical Education, Baghdad University. The study was approved by the University of Baghdad IRB under the consent form PE102 dated 9.10.2021. Blood samples were collected from participating athletes who signed consent forms and were screened for performance-enhancing drugs. DNA was extracted via a Genaid DNA extraction kit and analysed for the Solute Carrier Family 16 Member 1 (Monocarboxylate Transporter 1) gene, which is responsible for lactate/pyruvate transportation. Genetic characteristics of lactate transport obtained in elite athletes were compared with literature data on this parameter in non-athletes. Results The results obtained from studying Solute Carrier Family 16 Member 1 (Monocarboxylate Transporter 1)), which is responsible for lactate/pyruvate transportation exon 4, revealed specific polymorphisms interpreted as synonymous and missense variations. With such changes, Monocarboxylate Transporter 1 in excelled athletes may function in a different way than in average and nonathletic individuals by changing the amino acid sequence, rendering the gene more effective in the respiration process and reducing lactate buildup in the body after intense training and competition. Conclusions Despite intense training and commitment to athletic programs, the heritability and genetic makeup of athletes may have the upper hand in endurance sports since they are involved in body physiology and muscle response, respiration and active metabolism, and finally muscle recovery. There are specific changes in genes involved in athletic performance that might play a crucial role in discriminating between excelled athletes and other average athletes. This may provide an effective tool in the future selection of athletes who are more candidates to participate in the Olympics and global competitions.

Optimizing green food on MICE industry: determining performance strategy

Wijaya I Nyoman Cahyadi, Ahmadi Lukman, Sena I Made Aswin Ananta

The increasing emphasis on sustainability in global business ecosystems has transformed environmental responsibility from an ethical obligation to a strategic imperative. In the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) industry, eco-friendly food is crucial in reducing environmental impact and improving long-term competitiveness. However, the Indonesian MICE sector faces major challenges in implementing structured sustainability strategies, especially in food procurement and waste management. The lack of a standardized decision-making framework limits the industry's ability to optimize its sustainability efforts and creates a research gap in identifying the most impactful green food initiatives. Data was collected from 50 individual members of the Indonesian Event Association (IVENDO) representing event consulting, event management, hospitality and exhibition organization, as well as from three medium-sized companies affiliated with IVENDO and operating in the MICE sector. The results show that local and organic sourcing (LOS) is the highest priority (0.206), followed by storage optimization (SO) (0.138), sustainable packaging (SP) (0.129) and energy-efficient operations (EEO) (0.100). These results highlight the industry's preference for local partnerships, efficient food storage management and environmentally friendly operational concepts. While the study provides a structured approach to green food optimization, the focus on Indonesia and the limited sample size limit its applicability on a broader scale. However, the findings serve as a foundation for future research to expand datasets and explore blockchain-enabled supply chain transparency to ultimately improve sustainability and operational efficiency in the Indonesian MICE industry while strengthening its global impact

Income Inequality, Food Aid, and 'Zero Hunger': Evaluating Effectiveness During Lula's Administration

Bo Wu

Income inequality has been an important social issue that has attracted widespread attention. Taking the Zero Hunger Program in Brazil as a case study, this study analyzes the impact of policy changes on the income distribution of the Brazilian population during the implementation of the program using a breakpoint regression approach. The data for the study come from a variety of sources, including the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Social Assistance and the Family, and are analyzed using detailed descriptive statistics from the CEIC Brazil In-Depth Database. The results of the study show that during the Lula administration, Brazil's Zero Hunger Program substantially reduced income inequality, provided more substantial income security for the poor, and reduced the income gap between the rich and the poor. In terms of gender differences, the program led to a larger increase in the income of the male labor force at the right age compared to the female labor force, further highlighting the positive impact of the policy on the male labor force. These results are further confirmed by sensitivity analysis and provide useful lessons for subsequent policy formulation. This study's deep dive into the effects of the Zero Hunger program provides a valuable contribution to academic social science research and policy development.

Service Deployment in the On-Demand Economy: Employees, Contractors, or Both?

Lijian Lu, Xin Weng, Li Xiao

The recent advancements in mobile/data technology have fostered a widespread adoption of on-demand or gig service platforms. The increasingly available data and independent contractors have enabled these platforms to design customized services and a cost-efficient workforce to effectively match demand and supply. In practice, a diverse landscape of the workforce has been observed: some rely solely on either employees or contractors, others use a blended workforce with both types of workers. In this paper, we consider a profit-maximizing service provider (SP) that decides to offer a single service or two differentiated services, along with the pricing and staffing of the workforce with employees and/or contractors, to price- and waiting-sensitive customers. Contractors independently determine whether or not to participate in the marketplace based on private reservation rates and per-service wage offered by the SP, while it controls the number of employees who receive per-hour wage. Under a single service, we show that the SP relies on either employees or contractors and identify sufficient and necessary conditions in which one workforce is better than the other. Under the optimal service deployment, we show that the SP offers either a single service relying solely on employees or contractors, or two differentiated services with a hybrid workforce depending on the service value and cost efficiencies of employees and contractors. Our analysis suggests that proliferating services with a blended workforce could improve the SP's profit significantly, and identifies conditions in which this value is significant. Our results provide an in-depth understanding and insightful guidance to on-demand platforms on the design of service differentiation and workforce models.

Comparative Analysis of AWS Model Deployment Services

Rahul Bagai

Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers three important Model Deployment Services for model developers: SageMaker, Lambda, and Elastic Container Service (ECS). These services have critical advantages and disadvantages, influencing model developer's adoption decisions. This comparative analysis reviews the merits and drawbacks of these services. This analysis found that Lambda AWS service leads in efficiency, autoscaling aspects, and integration during model development. However, ECS was found to be outstanding in terms of flexibility, scalability, and infrastructure control; conversely, ECS is better suited when it comes to managing complex container environments during model development, as well as addressing budget concerns -- it is, therefore, the preferred option for model developers whose objective is to achieve complete freedom and framework flexibility with horizontal scaling. ECS is better suited to ensuring performance requirements align with project goals and constraints. The AWS service selection process considered factors that include but are not limited to load balance and cost-effectiveness. ECS is a better choice when model development begins from the abstract. It offers unique benefits, such as the ability to scale horizontally and vertically, making it the best preferable tool for model deployment.

Computable Contracts in the Financial Services Industry

Vinay K Chaudhri

A computable contract is a contract that a computer can read, understand and execute. The financial services industry makes extensive use of contracts, for example, mortgage agreements, derivatives contracts, arbitration agreements, etc. Most of these contracts exist as text documents, making it difficult to automatically query, execute and analyze them. In this vision paper, we argue that the use of computable contracts in the financial services industry will lead to substantial improvements in customer experience, reductions in the cost of doing legal transactions, make it easier to respond to changing laws, and provide a much better framework for making decisions impacted by contracts. Using a simple payment agreement, we illustrate a Contract Definition Language, sketch several use cases and discuss their benefits to the financial services industry.

Investigating Multiplicity: Institutional Logics and Division II Commuter Student Athletes

Jay Martyn, Brent D. Oja, Alan L. Morse

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of commuter student athletes who were hypothesized to experience a multiplicity of institutional logics while competing at the NCAA Division II level. Second, if multiple competing logics were present, the authors intended to test a theoretical model of logic multiplicity development. Utilizing a case study methodology, the authors collected data from commuter student athletes competing at the Division II level. The study’s findings indicated that commuter student athletes perceived the presence of multiple competing logics and that these logics indicated an aligned or minimally estranged organization. In particular, the high compatibility and high centrality of multiple competing logics signified an organization aligned between academic, athletic, and family values, whereas the low centrality and low compatibility of social identification and societal factors denoted an estranged organization for commuter student athletes. The implications of this research within sport management are presented herein.

Monetizing Edge Service in Mobile Internet Ecosystem

Zhiyuan Wang, Lin Gao, Tong Wang et al.

In mobile Internet ecosystem, Mobile Users (MUs) purchase wireless data services from Internet Service Provider (ISP) to access to Internet and acquire the interested content services (e.g., online game) from Content Provider (CP). The popularity of intelligent functions (e.g., AI and 3D modeling) increases the computation-intensity of the content services, leading to a growing computation pressure for the MUs' resource-limited devices. To this end, edge computing service is emerging as a promising approach to alleviate the MUs' computation pressure while keeping their quality-of-service, via offloading some computation tasks of MUs to edge (computing) servers deployed at the local network edge. Thus, Edge Service Provider (ESP), who deploys the edge servers and offers the edge computing service, becomes an upcoming new stakeholder in the ecosystem. In this work, we study the economic interactions of MUs, ISP, CP, and ESP in the new ecosystem with edge computing service, where MUs can acquire the computation-intensive content services (offered by CP) and offload some computation tasks, together with the necessary raw input data, to edge servers (deployed by ESP) through ISP. We first study the MU's Joint Content Acquisition and Task Offloading (J-CATO) problem, which aims to maximize his long-term payoff. We derive the off-line solution with crucial insights, based on which we design an online strategy with provable performance. Then, we study the ESP's edge service monetization problem. We propose a pricing policy that can achieve a constant fraction of the ex-post optimal revenue with an extra constant loss for the ESP. Numerical results show that the edge computing service can stimulate the MUs' content acquisition and improve the payoffs of MUs, ISP, and CP.

Assessing the maturity of software testing services using CMMI-SVC: An industrial case study

Vahid Garousi, Seyfettin Arkan, Gökhan Urul et al.

Context: While many companies conduct their software testing activities in-house, many other companies outsource their software testing needs to other firms who act as software testing service providers. As a result, Testing as a Service (TaaS) has emerged as a strong service industry in the last several decades. In the context of software testing services, there could be various challenges (e.g., during the planning and service delivery phases) and, as a result, the quality of testing services is not always as expected. Objective: It is important, for both providers and also customers of testing services, to assess the quality and maturity of test services and subsequently improve them. Method: Motivated by a real industrial need in the context of several testing service providers, to assess the maturity of their software testing services, we chose the existing CMMI for Services maturity model (CMMI-SVC), and conducted a case study using it in the context of two Turkish testing service providers. Results: The case-study results show that maturity appraisal of testing services using CMMI-SVC was helpful for both companies and their test management teams by enabling them objectively assess the maturity of their testing services and also by pinpointing potential improvement areas. Conclusion: We empirically observed that, after some minor customization, CMMI-SVC is indeed a suitable model for maturity appraisal of testing services.

Validation and Administration of a Conceptual Survey on the Formalism and Postulates of Quantum Mechanics

Emily Marshman, Chandralekha Singh

We developed and validated a conceptual survey that focuses on the formalism and postulates of quantum mechanics covered in upper-level undergraduate quantum mechanics courses. The concepts included in the Quantum Mechanics Formalism and Postulate Survey (QMFPS) focus on Dirac notation, the Hilbert space, state vectors, physical observables and their corresponding Hermitian operators, compatible and incompatible observables, quantum measurement, time-dependence of quantum states and expectation values, and spin angular momenta. Here we describe the validation and administration of the survey, which has been administered to over 400 upper-level undergraduate and graduate students from six institutions. The QMFPS is valid and reliable for use as a low-stakes test to measure the effectiveness of instruction in an undergraduate quantum mechanics course that covers relevant content. The survey can also be used by instructors to identify student understanding of the formalism and postulates of quantum mechanics at the beginning and end of a graduate quantum mechanics course since graduate students are expected to have taken an undergraduate quantum mechanics course that covers the content included in the survey. We found that undergraduate students who engaged with research-validated learning tools performed better than students who did not on the QMFPS after the first semester of a junior/senior level quantum mechanics course. In addition, the performance of graduate students on QMFPS after instruction in the first semester of a core graduate-level quantum mechanics course was significantly better than the performance of undergraduate students at the end of the first semester of an undergraduate quantum mechanics course. A comparison with the base line data on the validated QMFPS presented here can aid instructors in assessing the effectiveness of their instructional approaches.

Features of the psycho-physiological functions of elite athletes - Paralympians (on the example of fencing and table tennis)

M. Lytovchenko, E. Breus, Zh.L. Kozina et al.

The aim of the work is to identify the characteristics of psycho-physiological indicators in Paralympic athletes compared with athletes - Olympians and the influence of the characteristics of lesions of the upper and lower extremities on psychophysiological indicators. Material and methodsThe study involved 15 elite swordsmen performing in Olympic sports, 15 elite swordsmen - Paralympians; 33 elite athletes with disorders of the musculoskeletal system of the sixth (15 people) and tenth (18 people) functional classes in table tennis, age 21-25 years. The parameters characteristic for determining the psycho-physiological state were determined using computer programs for psycho-physiological testing. Dispersion analysis was also used. The influence of the functional class of athletes on the reaction rate in different test modes was determined. Results. Significant differences were found between Olympic swordsmen and Paralympian swordsmen in terms of “Minimum signal exposure time in a test with feedback” (p <0.05) and a complex reaction time when selecting 1 object out of 3; among the Olympic fencers, these figures are significantly higher compared with the Paralympians. It is shown that belonging to a certain functional class of athletes - Paralympians in table tennis affects the rate of stability of the reaction rate and the rate of time to reach the minimum signal exposure in the test for the speed of selection reaction with feedback. The speed of response to a visual signal, the number of errors during the test for reaction speed, the mobility of nerve processes in athletes - Paralympians in table tennis reliably depends on the degree of damage to the upper and lower extremities. The worst results in psychophysiological indicators were found in athletes with impaired operation of both lower extremities. Unilateral damage to the extremities and congenital underdevelopment of the extremities have a lesser effect on the psychophysiological functions. Conclusions. When training Paralympians - fencers and holding competitions, it is necessary to take into account not only the physical, but also the psychophysiological characteristics of the fencers - Paralympians. When training and functional classification of Paralympic athletes in table tennis, it is important to consider not only their affiliation to a certain functional class, but also the degree of disruption of the upper and lower extremities and the level of psycho-physiological functions.

La contribución del turismo al crecimiento económico en América Central y el Caribe

Juan Gabriel Brida, Giovanna Fabbro

Reviving tourism services through business tourism

Raluca Georgiana Stoian

The objective of this article is to shed insight on the tourism assistance and services that can be developed to optimize the tourism flow. This article will expose the fact that tourism combines several services, such as transport, accommodation, food, recreation, events, that make up the integrated tourism product and its marketing arrangements. Part of tourism services are designed to cover basic, everyday needs like rest, food, and another part is dedicated to specific necessities and particularities of tourism services (recreation, treatment, travel arrangements, etc.). The dynamism of tourism leads to the need for improvement of existing tourism services and develop new forms of tourism. Meanwhile developing tourism assistance and services leads to regional economic growth and professional development of people. Tourism plays an important role in the development of Romania's economic future and it is important to ensure that tourism resources are fully valued. Business trips or trips to congresses, conferences, meetings, etc. continue to develop, with increasing benefits for organizers. Many people who are involved in such activities are, in the same time, “holiday” tourists who want to discover the area that they are visiting. Tourism products and services are designed and developed to meet the needs of existing and potential customers. Tourists are becoming more experienced and sophisticated and expect high quality attractions, utilities and services, and rates / prices suited to their travels quality. Provided that everything mentioned above is the main reason or motivation to develop tourism and its services for visitors to events in which they participate; we will analyze possible options for improving the above mentioned services.

A Smaller Window to the University

Michael Hutchinson, Daniel A. Rascher, Kimi Jennings

Given the changing landscape of Division I athletic competition, determining the most advantageous commitment to athletic programs is an important issue in sport and university policy. With the recent autonomy granted to select Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences and pending antitrust litigation vying for college athlete compensation, many universities are considering alternative courses of action in reducing their existing commitment to Division I athletics. Accordingly, this study sought to examine the impact of de-escalating Division I commitment—specifically discontinuing a Division I football program—on the status and reputation of the university and athletic department. In considering the entire population of universities which have discontinued their Division I football program from 1981 to 2010 (N = 21), the results revealed that football program discontinuation had little positive or negative impact on academic status and reputation, and a slight negative impact on athletic status. The implications of this research contributes important information on assessing previous decisions to discontinue a Division I football program and what became of those decisions.
