Une archive des intensités invisibles. La Library for Radioactive Afterlife de Susanne Kriemann
Alexander Streitberger
Susanne Kriemann’s books P(ech) B(lende) and Ge(ssenwiese) K(anigsberg) are dedicated to the invisible after-effects of radioactivity. These books-as-library bring together multiple textual genres and forms of representation, produced by several authors. They explore « radioactive afterlife », which indicates not only the horizon of survival after nuclear catastrophe, but also the survival of images given the impossibility of representing an invisible and immeasurable phenomenon.

The Road to Divine Land: Iconography, Deity, and Aesthetic Style
Mengxi Tian, Shaohua Ding
Dongba painting is an ancient art form created by the ancestors of the Naxi people. As a masterpiece of Dongba scroll painting, <i>The Road to Heaven</i>, exemplifies the simplicity and beauty of the primitive Dongba religion and stands as a unique treasure within Naxi painting, possessing significant value for both art and religious research. <i>The Road to Heaven</i> serves as an essential religious ritual artifact in the Dongba religion of the Naxi people. Utilizing the format of a long scroll painting, it depicts the Naxi people’s reflections on the origins of life; the relationships between humans, nature, and society; and the exploration of life’s ultimate destiny, thereby presenting a distinctive worldview. This article constructs a theoretical analysis framework based on an iconographic study of <i>The Road to Heaven</i>, exploring the unique artistic representation, aesthetic spirit, worldview, and religious origins of the Naxi people to gain a deeper understanding of the construction of their spiritual homeland. At the level of pre-iconographic description, this article primarily analyzes the subject matter and contents of <i>The Road to Heaven</i>, the materials employed in the painting, and its artistic features. The iconographic analysis examines the thematic elements of <i>The Road to Heaven</i>; the virtual world structure of the Dongba religion’s imagined realms of gods, humans, and spirits; and its simple, natural, vivid, and imaginative aesthetic style. At the level of iconological interpretation, in this article, the characteristics of the religious beliefs shown in <i>The Road to Heaven</i> and the main factors influencing its aesthetic spirit are analyzed. We reveal that although the Dongba religion intersects and integrates with Tibetan Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Daoism, and other ideologies and cultures, ancestor worship remains a dominant force guiding Naxi behavior. The unique natural environment, historical migrations, and multicultural exchanges of the Naxi people are the primary factors shaping their aesthetic spirit. By systematically analyzing <i>The Road to Heaven</i> from the perspective of iconology, this study provides evidence of its profound connections with Naxi social history, offering a more comprehensive view of the Naxi people’s aesthetic spirit and cultural connotations while presenting new approaches for researching <i>The Road to Heaven</i>.

On learning higher-order cumulants in diffusion models
Gert Aarts, Diaa E. Habibi, Lingxiao Wang
et al.
To analyse how diffusion models learn correlations beyond Gaussian ones, we study the behaviour of higher-order cumulants, or connected n-point functions, under both the forward and backward process. We derive explicit expressions for the moment- and cumulant-generating functionals, in terms of the distribution of the initial data and properties of forward process. It is shown analytically that during the forward process higher-order cumulants are conserved in models without a drift, such as the variance-expanding scheme, and that therefore the endpoint of the forward process maintains nontrivial correlations. We demonstrate that since these correlations are encoded in the score function, higher-order cumulants are learnt in the backward process, also when starting from a normal prior. We confirm our analytical results in an exactly solvable toy model with nonzero cumulants and in scalar lattice field theory.

Load Asymptotics and Dynamic Speed Optimization for the Greenest Path Problem: A Comprehensive Analysis
Poulad Moradi, Joachim Arts, Josué C. Velázquez-Martínez
We study the effect of using high-resolution elevation data on the selection of the most fuel-efficient(greenest) path for different trucks in various urban environments. We adapt a variant of the Comprehensive Modal Emission Model(CMEM) to show that the optimal speed and the greenest path are slope dependent (dynamic). When there are no elevation changes in a road network, the most fuel-efficient path is the shortest path with a constant (static) optimal speed throughout. However, if the network is not flat, then the shortest path is not necessarily the greenest path, and the optimal driving speed is dynamic. We prove that the greenest path converges to an asymptotic greenest path as the payload approaches infinity and that this limiting path is attained for a finite load.In a set of extensive numerical experiments, we benchmark the CO2emissions reduction of our dynamic speed and the greenest path policies against policies that ignore elevation data.We use the geospatial data of 25major cities across 6continents.We observe numerically that the greenest path quickly diverges from the shortest path and attains the asymptotic greenest path even for moderate payloads.Based on an analysis of variance, the main determinants of the CO2emissions reduction potential are the variation of the road gradients along the shortest path as well as the relative elevation of the source from the target.Using speed data estimates for rush hour in New York City, we test CO2emissions reduction by comparing the greenest paths with optimized speeds against the fastest paths with traffic speed. We observe that selecting the greenest paths instead of the fastest paths can significantly reduce CO2emissions.Additionally,our results show that while speed optimization on uphill arcs can significantly help CO2reduction,the potential to leverage gravity for acceleration on downhill arcs is limited due to traffic congestion.
The unusual distribution of spin-triplet supercurrents in disk-shaped Josephson junctions
Remko Fermin, Junxiang Yao, Kaveh Lahabi
et al.
The phenomenon of s-wave spin triplet Cooper pairs induced in ferromagnetic metals has been researched now for more than a decade, and its main aspects are well understood. Crucial in converting s-wave singlet pairs in the superconductor to s-wave triplets in the ferromagnet is the engineering of well-defined magnetic inhomogeneity (the 'generator') at the interface with the superconductor. Vertical layer stacks are typically used as such, where two separate thin ferromagnetic layers with homogeneous but non-collinear magnetizations, provide the inhomogeneity. Alternatively, magnetic textures, like ferromagnetic domain walls and vortices, are possible triplet generators, although they are far less studied. In this paper we review our experiments on lateral disk-shaped Josephson junctions where a ferromagnetic bottom layer provides a weak link with a vortex magnetization imposed by the shape of the disk. We present three different junction configurations, exhibiting their own generator mechanism. In the first, we utilize the non-collinearity with a second ferromagnetic layer to produce the triplet correlations. The second configuration consists of only the bottom ferromagnet and the superconducting contacts; it relies on the vortex magnetization itself to generate the spin-polarized supercurrents. In the third case we exploit an intrinsic generator by combining a conventional superconductor (NbTi) and a half-metallic ferromagnetic oxide (La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$). We find strong supercurrents in all cases. A particularly interesting finding is that the supercurrents are strongly confined at the rims of the device, independent of the generating mechanism, but directly related to their triplet nature. What causes these rim currents remains an open question.

Self-Assessing Creative Problem Solving for Aspiring Software Developers: A Pilot Study
Wouter Groeneveld, Lynn Van den Broeck, Joost Vennekens
et al.
We developed a self-assessment tool for computing students in higher education to measure their Creative Problem Solving skills. Our survey encompasses 7 dimensions of creativity, based on existing validated scales and conducted focus groups. These are: technical knowledge, communication, constraints, critical thinking, curiosity, creative state of mind, and creative techniques. Principal axis factor analysis groups the dimensions into three overarching constructs: ability, mindset, and interaction. The results of a pilot study (n = 269) provide evidence for its psychometric qualities, making it a useful instrument for educational researchers to investigate students' creative skills.

This article consists of four diff erent smaller parts. Two of them discuss the vowel variation in a Dutch patronym respectively in a substance name; the other two contain mini collections of metaphors concerning the human body and animal names. The whole is presented as a triptych with a predella as a tribute to the jubilee, whom this volume of Neerlandica Wratislaviensia is dedicated. In visual arts a predella being the base of an altarpiece, here it is the foot of the triptych of words and deals with the pseudonym ‘Martens’, Norbert Morciniec in 1985 used as the co-author of a concise dictionary Dutch-Polish / Polish-Dutch. The lexicological sets may also, in two of the panels, be seen as a tribute to the lexicographer.

Genes, brain dynamics and art: the genetic underpinnings of creativity in dancing, musicality and visual arts
Marinos G. Sotiropoulos, Maria Anagnostouli
Creativity, art and artistic creation in music, dance and visual arts are brain
activities specific to humans. Their genetic background remained unexplored for
years, but many recent studies have uncovered significant associations with
cognition-related genes and loci. These studies are summarized in the present
article. Creativity is a trait with heavy genetic influences, which are also
associated with mental disorders and altruism. Associated genes include
dopaminergic, serotoninergic and other genes (a1-antitrypsin, neuregulin,
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor). Music is another complex phenotype with
important genetic background. Studies in musicians and their families have
highlighted the contribution of loci (e.g., 4q22) and specific genes (vasopressin
receptor 1α and serotonin transporter). The latter two are also
associated with dancing. Although few studies have investigated visual arts, they
appear to be influenced by genetic differences, which could explain the increased
prevalence of synesthesia in artists and individuals with autism. Lastly,
although genes play an important role in creativity and art, epigenetics and the
environment should not be overlooked. The genetic exploration of artistic
creativity may provide useful knowledge on cognition, behavior and brain
function. It may also enable targeted and personalized art therapy in health and
disease.

Returning to the Scene: Seriality and the Serial Killer
Katie Jones
This article reads the perennial popularity of true crime products as symptomatic of repression and cultural trauma. Providing a close-reading of gender representation in the popular Netflix series Mindhunter, the author meditates on the postmodern characteristics of the series, which also signal the “forgotten” or repressed content to which the viewer returns. Utilising a feminist psychoanalytic approach to the popular Netflix series Mindhunter, the author considers representation in relation to seriality in order to speculate that seriality might formalise the traumatic return, and be used as material through which to unearth the repressed content inherent to the true crime genre, namely: the victim’s perspective.
