A Dog’s Struggle. Martin Kellerman’s Rocky as Autofiction

Øystein Sjåstad

This article is about the Swedish daily comic strip Rocky by Martin Kellerman. The article views Rocky as an example of autofiction due to Kellerman’s use of an anthropomorphic cartoon self and the daily comic strip’s narrative structure. One of the article’s goals is to show how the daily comic strip as a medium creates an original day-to-day space for exploring a life story.

Vlastimil Brom

The paper presents the Middle High German Conceptual Database as a tool and research infrastructure for analysing older German texts; the available functionality and typical use cases are discussed, including the conceptual framework and the representation of semantic features of the lexical units. The present options for retrieving this kind of data are outlined and some currently running projects are briefly characterised, which are aiming at enhancing the current functionality and enabling other kinds usage in multiple areas.

Lademoens Kæmpehøie
Jarlenes Lade belyst gjennom arkeologiske kilder

Julian P. Cadamarteri

The concept of the linguistic picture of the world has a relatively long tradition in linguistics. Within the framework of this theory, language is perceived both as a means of knowledge and as a means of communication. In this sense, the opinion is held that language becomes an instrument of world interpretation and reflects views, stereotypes, etc. In this article, the linguistic picture of a doctor in the German language is presented. The basis for the analysis are lexicographic sources. The etymology, semantics, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships of the lexeme Arzt and Doktor as well as phraseological units in which they are included are examined. The investigation clarifies which characteristics make up the term doctor in the German language and how the term is linguistically evaluated.

Olavs by eller byen ved fossen?

Hege-Beate Solås Lindemark

Abstract This article examines how Sarpsfossen has been used as a bearer of identity for the city of Sarpsborg through anniversary markings for the last hundred years. Anniversary markings give cities an opportunity to emphasize the origins of the city, and its historical roots are closely linked with how the city presents itself and its identity. The tale of Sarpsborg begins with two main “components”, which will always be central in the history of the city: the waterfall Sarpsfossen and the founder of Sarpsborg Olav Haraldsson. How have these two key elements been used throughout history and in the anniversary markings? Which role have they played in the narrative and development of Sarpsborg? Olav Haraldsson (Olav the Holy) is an important symbol, also nationally, and as a founder of the city, he naturally plays a central part in the tale of the city. But what about the Sarpsfossen? Has it been valued in the same way as Olav Haraldsson during the four city anniversaries in Sarpsborg between 1916 and 2016?

Genotyping and phylogenetic placement of Bacillus anthracis isolates from Finland, a country with rare anthrax cases

Taru Lienemann, Wolfgang Beyer, Kirsti Pelkola et al.

Abstract Background Anthrax, the zoonotic disease caused by the gram-positive bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is nowadays rare in northern parts of Europe including Finland and Scandinavia. Only two minor outbreaks of anthrax in 1988 and in 2004 and one sporadic infection in 2008 have been detected in animals in Finland since the 1970’s. Here, we report on two Finnish B. anthracis strains that were isolated from spleen and liver of a diseased calf related to the outbreak in 1988 (strain HKI4363/88) and from a local scrotum and testicle infection of a bull in 2008 (strain BA2968). These infections occurred in two rural Finnish regions, i.e., Ostrobothnia in western Finland and Päijänne Tavastia in southern Finland, respectively. Results The isolates were genetically characterized by PCR-based methods such as multilocus variable number of tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) and whole genome-sequence analysis (WGS). Phylogenetic comparison of the two strains HKI4363/88 and BA2968 by chromosomal single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis grouped these organisms within their relatives of the minor canonical A-branch canSNP-group A.Br.003/004 (A.Br.V770) or canonical B-branch B.Br.001/002, respectively. Strain HKI4363/88 clustered relatively closely with other members of the A.Br.003/004 lineage from Europe, South Africa, and South America. In contrast, strain BA2968 clearly constituted a new sublineage within B.Br.001/002 with its closest relative being HYO01 from South Korea. Conclusions Our results suggest that Finland harbors both unique (autochthonous) and more widely distributed, common clades of B. anthracis. We suspect that members of the common clades such as strains HKI4363/88 have been introduced only recently by anthropogenic activities involving importation of contaminated animal products. On the other hand, autochthonous strains such as isolate BA2968 probably have an older history of their introduction into Finland as evidenced by a high number of single nucleotide variant sites in their genomes.

Josephine von Knorr, eine heute fast unbekannte österreichische Dichterin

Eleonora Jeřábková

The author tries to outline a portrait of the poetess Josephine von Knorr – one of the closest friends of the renowned Austrian writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. The two writers creatively influenced each other in their extensive exchange of letters. The poetry of Josephine von Knorr eventually fell into oblivion. Her poems are not only an intimate expression of her inner feelings, but also an interesting reflection of the 19th century period.
