Bridal Ecclesiology and the African Church: Theological Reflections and Contextual Applications

Isaac Boaheng

The metaphor of the Church as the “bride of Christ” holds profound theological significance, offering insights into the identity, purpose, and eschatological hope of the Christian community. Despite its richness, this metaphor has received limited scholarly engagement within African theological discourse, leading to a gap in its contextual application. This article addresses that gap by critically examining the implications of bridal ecclesiology for the African Church. Using conceptual analysis and a comprehensive review of existing literature, the study demonstrates that the bridal imagery not only illuminates the Church’s participatory role in Christ’s redemptive mission but also inspires a deeper communal spirituality, ethical commitment, and missional consciousness. The paper argues that integrating this metaphor into African ecclesiology can promote the church’s qualitative growth, enhance communal engagement, and invigorate its spiritual and missional vitality. In doing so, the article contributes to a more robust and contextually relevant African ecclesiological framework.

Holocaust***Gulag: Repressing, Rescuing, and Regulating Recalcitrant Legacies

Krondorfer Björn, Tolstaya Katya

Is it possible to bring into conversation two different traumatic legacies that occurred in the twentieth century in Europe? How can we engage in productive conversation about two totalitarian systems that repressed, incarcerated, dehumanized, and murdered people deemed enemies of the state or unworthy of living? These were some of the challenging questions addressed in the roundtable symposium “Holocaust***Gulag: Repressing, Rescuing, and Regulating Recalcitrant Legacies.” The symposium aimed at addressing specific aspects of the difficult and painful histories of the Holocaust and the Gulag, and to probe how these long-lasting legacies intrude into contemporary society, culture, religion, and politics.

Liturgy

Benedikt Kranemann

The centre of Christian liturgy is the revelation of God in Jesus of Nazareth. In the first section of this article, the understanding of this liturgical centre is unpacked within different denominational contexts (mystery celebration, proclamation event, sacred play, staging of the gospel, etc.). Concepts of time and spatiality within liturgy, which are not only functional but also theologically enriched, are presented. The second section deals with the liturgical assembly and its structures, and the significance of assembly for the liturgy is explained. The place of assembly is addressed before looking at roles and ministries in worship. The third section explores the Bible and liturgy. It examines the different ways in which the Old Testament and New Testament are received in liturgy (e.g. readings and pericope systems, biblical prayers, readings of the Psalms, and sermons). The function of the Bible and place of intertextuality in liturgy (anamnetic, catechetical, etc.) are discussed. The fourth section focuses on different rites and textual forms and the significance of bodies in liturgy. The importance of different media for worship is unpacked before discussing different text types (oration, acclamation, etc.). The fifth section is devoted to the dynamics and diversity of liturgy. It briefly turns to historical phenomena and then demonstrates the factors at work in the dynamics of liturgy (top-down, bottom-up). The sixth section centres on theology and liturgical scholarship, in which different concepts of theology of liturgy and liturgical theology are explained. It also shows how liturgy has been reflected differently at different times in church history. Finally, current questions of liturgical scholarship on worship are explored.

Gazdasági kihívások keresztyén etikai vizsgálata

Levente Kovács, József Zsellengér

A művészeti, kulturális, vallási, tudományos és gazdasági területeken a fejlődés ciklikus módon történik, az intenzitások időrendben azonos sorrendben egymás után jelentkeznek a felsorolt területeken. A művészet/kultúra/vallás esetében ez egyfajta motivációs őseredetre vezethető vissza. Éppen ezért érdemes vizsgálni a gazdaság - keresztyénség, azon belül is legjelentősebb fejlődési hatásként a gazdaság - protestantizmus viszonyát. Christian ethical scrutiny of economic challenges In the fi elds of art, culture, religion, science and economics the evolution is cyclical and its intensities appear in the same chronological sequence. In the case of art/culture/science, it can be traced back to an ancient origin of motivation. Th at is the reason why one should study the relation of economics and Christianity, especially the relation of economics and Protestantism that has the most signifi cant evolutional eff ect, which is still present within the morals and economic development of (either religious or less religious) European and American societies. Th is study aims to present these relations and argue with practical examples.

MODELO CONFLITUAL/CONTRADIÇÃO/DIALÉTICO PARA ENTENDER OS DIREITOS HUMANOS/JUSTIÇA NA BÍBLIA (1 Co 12,14-27)

Joel Antonio Ferreira

CONFLITUAL/CONTRADICTION/DIALETIC MODEL TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN RIGHTS/JUSTICE IN THE BIBLE (1 Cor 12,14-27) The sociological reading of the Conflict Model helps the reader / interpreter, besides the "vital situation" in which the text was written, to know the "social place" of the whole narrative. The conflictive reading of the Bible as an epistemological foundation has the assertion that "critical sociology" is a valid instrument of criticism of established order (functionalist sociology). Seeking the "social place" of biblical texts, listening to the voice of the marginalized and oppressed, this reading is always a denunciation to the voice of the dominators. She will, by academic option, explaining the characters, the "margin" groups: those who live in the peripheries, those who have no voice or space. Therefore, the reader / interpreter must be in an attitude of "suspicion": the insignificant, by the asymmetric-domineering vision, come to have a vital meaning. The "social place" of the abandoned and forgotten ones becomes a primordial space. In this way, Justice and Human Rights will be seen in a crystalline way, from 1 Cor 12:14-27.

Contemporary Pentecostal Christianity : Interpretations from an African Context

Asamoah-Gyadu J. Kwabena

the story, each one with a unique lesson for the reader. The ninth chapter of the book is dedicated to what is probably the most interesting aspect for Christians, and that is mentoring people in a church environment. In this chapter, the author sidetracks from his usual narrative style and offers a systematic examination of important aspects of Christian mentoring. We are again reminded that the first and most important thing is to be mindful of our own walk with God. Rest, task delegation, sleep, physical health and prayer are all important parts of maintaining an altogether healthy approach. The second key aspect is family life, and we are urged to take heed of this very important part of our lives. “We need to be careful that the urgent does not push out the important” are the words of the author pertaining to family. Cranston then proceeds to describe Christian leadership with two distinct images: one of a bridge builder and the other of a servant. He finishes the chapter with a few interesting stories of leaders confronting illness, death and suffering, lying down for the reader a Christian perspective on these hard but part-of-life topics. The final chapter is a short recap of his important mentoring experiences and pointers along with some practical practices in mentoring, both negative and positive. David Cranston certainly proves to have something to say about mentoring. A lifelong experience in medicine and lay Christian ministry make up for a good background if one is to speak about the many benefits of mentoring. In this interesting and instructive book, the author has included personal revelations on the topic along with historical and biblical lessons, and quoted wisdom from great Christian and secular minds. The book is short and easy to read, and undoubtedly comes opportunely for those that understand the importance of the many lessons we have learned and have yet to learn from others, as well as offering our own knowledge and experience to those in need of it. The book is sure to inspire those in leadership positions to think hard about the legacy they will leave behind and their involvement in the development and empowerment of those that are to succeed them.
